Our beloved Frederick Murphy, known by those close to him as “Pep”, passed away on February 1, 2022, at the age of 51 after a courageous battle with health issues, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his memory. Frederick was born in Bennettsville, SC. He was the son of Sylvia Ann Murphy and Fred JG Thomas.
He attended and graduated from Marlboro County School District. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a devoted member of the Usher Board.
Frederick was always smiling, and loved the Dallas Cowboys to the end, and as a youth, he played high school football.  He worked various jobs, but he later started his own landscape and handyman business. It was his passion. On April 4, 2015, he married the love of his life, Shirley, and they both echoed their love by saying, “I love my wife, and I love my husband.”
Frederick was preceded in death by his grandparents Monnie and JD Murphy, Fred and Alma Thomas, Uncles Dewayne and Jerry Murphy, and Aunt Barbara Buie.
Frederick will remain in the hearts of his devoted family. He leaves to mourn his wife Shirley, his mother Sylvia A. Murphy (John), his father Fred  (De’Elizabeth) Thomas; his daughter, Mariah Murphy; his sisters LaShonda Murphy, LaShawn (Damian) Bridges; his nephews Tyrone Ellerbe and Ian Bridges; the apple of his affection, his granddaughter, Aria; Mother-in-Law Ruby (James) Covington ; Sister-in-Laws Barbara (Elvis) Moore, Monique (Charles) McPherson; Brother-in-Laws: James (Sharon) Nelson, John and Derrick Bright. During his marriage, he gained additional children Jessica (Quentrell) Nelson, Antione (Kenyetta) Morgan, Dewayne Bright, and Kenwood Bright; additional grandchildren, Keshaunna, Keosha, Kelijah, Keyonna, Antione Jr, Mckenzie, Kaius, and Kylan; Aunts: Sharon Thomas and Alfreda (Robert) Stroman; Uncles: Tauris and Jimmy Murphy; Special cousins: Dwayne (Kimberlyn) Thomas, Ronnie (Aletha) Rollins; a special friend, Robert Boatright; special nieces, Nidella Sellers and Ka’Jayla Murphy and a myrid of other family, friends, and acquaintances from his childhood to adulthood.

Polly Ann McLaurin Oliver, the daughter of Katie Mae McLaurin and James Thomas McLaurin, was born on October 19, 1951, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. She departed this life on October 4, 2021, at her home. Polly attended the public schools of Scotland County, graduating in 1968 before Charles, her soulmate in 1970. They were blessed to become gainfully employed, living in various states while creating lasting friendships along the way. The couple was able to operate the first Moe’s Chic’n in Bennettsville and Laurinburg in 1984 and it existed until Spring 2015. Polly was gifted with the ability to create beautiful articles of clothing, create tablespaces, and coordinating immaculate colors and designs. She enjoyed the opportunity to use these talents in the service of her church. She was a chartered member of the Community of Grace and a member of the hospitality committee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Katie Mae McLaurin and James Thomas McLaurin, and the love of her life, Charles Oliver. Left to cherish fond memories are: her three children, James (Lisa), Michelle, and Erik; grandchildren, Brittney, Malik, Tevin, JaTavius, Tyler, Jalei, Jaden, Essence, and Skylar (Blondie); great-grands, Kamdyn and Kalise; sisters, Margret Bethea, Pastor Helen Bridges, and Jackie McNeil (Elijah); aunts, Pastor Virginia Lane and Flossie Breeden; uncle, Willie McLaurin; brothers-in-law, Timothy Oliver (Lula); sisters-in-law, Beverly McKiver (Ronnie), Loretta Brown, Geraldine Oliver, and Alice Y. Oliver; goddaughters, Calvette Bethea, Rasheema Ward, and Lanita Cole; one godson, Herod David, Jr.; and a host of nieces and nephews. We will be remiss if we do not share with you how much unconditional love existed in the heart of our dear Polly. We will forever be grateful to have shared this life with her.

Memorial Reflections Dolphus Lee McLaughin Jr. was born to the both late Mr. Dolphus McLaughin and Mrs. Arletha McLaughlin Covington on June 18, 1951. He was a lifelong resident of Bennettsville, SC, until he passed away peacefully at his home. He was educated within the Marlboro County school and graduated from Bennettsville High School with the class of 1972. During his early life, Dolphus made a courageous decision to join the United States Marine Corps, in an effort to bravely defend our country. He proudly served for four years before receiving an honorable discharge. Shortly after his separation from the military, and joining the workforce, he attended Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, SC and obtained his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Driving quickly became his passion. He began his career driving long distance trips, but ultimately decided to drive locally, which led to his long term employment with Palmetto Brick Company in Cheraw, SC. Dolphus was a faithful member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Bennettsville, where he was a member of The Board of Trustees and the Usher Ministry. He was well known within his community and those who knew him, loved him dearly. On the morning of September 16, 2021, God called Dolphus home peacefully as he rested in his favorite rocking chair. Left to cherish his memories are his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Mrs. Susie Mae McLaughlin. He was a loyal and admirable father to six children left to honor his legacy; Derrick Douglas (Maxine) Laurinburg, NC, Latarsha McLaughlin of Bennettsville, SC, Noresa McLaughlin of Columbia, SC, Jennifer McLaughlin of Bennettsville, SC, Doretha McLaughlin of Charlotte, NC, and Christa McLaughlin (Shaun) of Blythewood, SC. Nine Grandchildren; LaQuentin, Tahleasha, LeDolphus, Michaela, Nazareth, Zion, Camia, Aria, Shaunice; and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by four siblings; Bertha McCall of Bennettsville, SC, James McLaughlin (Jeanette) of Columbia SC, Ronnie McLaughlin of High Point, NC, and Linda McLaughlin of Bennettsville, SC. Eight aunts; Barbara Johnson of Clio, SC, Annie R. Jeffery, Martha Williams, Luvenia McRae, Mae McRae, all of High Point, NC. Claude was born in Wilson, North Carolina. He attended school in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the United States Air Force and retired from the Air Force after serving over twenty years where he received extensive training in Leadership and Management, Morale and Ideology, Personal Counseling and Basic Doctrine Character Guidance. Upon his retirement, he began his civilian career with Safeway Stores, Inc., Oakland California as a Supervisor and later he was Superintendent. Claude retired from Safeway in 1989. He began a new career with Anheuser Busch as a Supervisor, retiring in 1993 and relocating to Bennettsville, South Carolina. During this period of time (twenty-two years) Claude was self-employed as a Registered Representative with Waddell and Reed as a Financial Planner.
Claude served as a Deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church, and past Sunday School Superintendent, a member and past president of the Male Chorus, and a member of the Brotherhood where he served as the first President, Chairman of the Policy, and Chairman of the Calendar committee, and other committees assigned by the Pastor. Claude is a 32nd degree Mason, Past Master, Treasurer and a Royal Arch Mason, Past Worthy Patron, District Patron, Past District Associate Patron, and Eastern Star. He also served as Eastern Star Grand Officer for two years. Also served as a Grand Lodge Deputy at Large for Community Affairs. Other activities that Claude was a part of included Transportation Board of Directors of Marlboro County, past Chairman Marlboro County Economic Development Partnership Board, Chairman Marlboro County Economic Board, Board of Directors Marlboro County Economic Development Partnership Board (Treasurer), Board of Directors United Way, past Vice Chairman United Way, Board of Director Red Cross (Treasurer), Life Member of NAACP, Charter President Bennettsville Breakfast Club, Secretary Bennettsville Breakfast Club, and was on the Board of Directors Federal Correctional Institute, Bennettsville, SC Drug Court member. Claude was a member of the local Kiwanis Club where he served as a member of the Board of Directors, Club Secretary, Distinguished President and Distinguished Lt. Governor.
