Elizabeth Josephine Diesel - October 18, 1942 - December 06, 2023

Departed: 12/06/2023 (Northlake)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth J (Hoeksema) Diesel Betty Jo—was born 10/18/42, the first of eight children, to Henry and Mildred Hoeksema of Berwyn, IL. From the beginning she was nurtured in the Christian faith: raised in a Christian home, attending Cicero Bible Church where she was active in the youth group and met her future husband, Donald B. Childs; she played piano and learned the vibraharp. She graduated from Timothy Christian School, and at age 18 married Don (19) and enrolled at Wheaton College. Her education was interrupted after one year as kids joined the family-four in all, with a fifth adopted later. Betty provided childcare while raising her kids and continuing her education, earning her BA, then her MSW and LCSW while still raising kids.
Betty enjoyed a productive career in social work-including work with a 0-3 developmental program in Oak Park; at the ventilator unit of Children's Memorial Hospital; for a hemodialysis group; at the Loyola Cancer Center; and with 2 different hospice organizations-where she found a great opportunity to exercise her gifts of compassion, nurturing and encouragement.
After 24 years of marriage, Betty endured a painful divorce. Her faith was tested, but she found strength in God's Word, and the support of her family. She embraced the promise in Jer 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." She chose to claim her new identity in Christ, and a new name: Beth. Five years later, Beth met and married the free-spirited Ken Diesel, who introduced a new element of adventure to her life—they spent many of their 32 years together camping, hiking and backpacking, visiting at least 24 National Parks (her favorite: Denali, in Alaska). Beth was active in the choir for many years at Calvary Memorial Church, which she began attending with her family in 1968; where she also participated in women's Bible studies and was an encouragement to many. She cared passionately for her family, especially her grandkids, for whom she prayed regularly. After Ken's passing in 2021, Beth increasingly yearned for heaven; after four months of worsening illness this year, Beth went home to be with Jesus on December 6, 2023
Beth is survived by 3 brothers: Hank (Carol) Hoeksema, Tim (Jan) Hoeksema, Dan (Linda) Hoeksema; 2 sisters: Ruth (Jim) Thomson, Chris (late Tom) Egan; her 5 children: Donald S. (Karen) Childs, Lynda (Alfonso) Moreno, David Childs, Jonathon Childs, Tanya Hollister; 21 grandchildren and a growing brood of great grandchildren.

Ewing "Lue" Metoyer - January 11, 1920 - October 23, 2023

Departed: 10/23/2023 (Northlake)
Obituary Preview: Ewing "Lue" Metoyer, 103, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on October 23, 2023 after a long, fulfilling life.
Lue was born on January 11, 1920 to Nazy "Mama Nazy" and St. Claire "Papa Pete" Metoyer in Derry, Louisiana.
Lue served in the United States Armed Forces in World War Il from 1941 to 1945. He reflected on his time serving his country domestically and abroad as a great privilege and opportunity.
After the war, he moved to Chicago and married Irene in 1946. In 1948, they went on to have a son, Stan.
Lue started working for Greyhound bus company as a mechanic upon his arrival in Chicago. He progressed in his career at Greyhound. Greyhound approached him many times to promote him to management, but to a man who liked to fix things, that didn't feel much like a promotion. He loved his work as a mechanic but loved to travel more, so he retired in 1976.
Lue began investing in real estate in 1949. He worked hard by day as a mechanic and by night “working on his buildings”. Lue loved road trips and drove across the country well into his 90s. Lue also liked to dance and was a member of the Chicago Windy City Jitterbug Club up until he was 93 in 2013. He found joy in simple everyday things and was an eternal optimist. He had the ability to see good in everyone and to know the opportunity that every tomorrow held.
Lue was predeceased by his wife, Irene, parents and his eleven siblings Amanda, Edward, John, St. Clair Jr. (Dute), Emma, Anthony, Samuel, James, Marcus, Landry, and Vilfried. He is survived by his son Stan; daughter-in-law, Susie; Grandchildren Sean (Yvette) and Sharee (Brad); Great Grandchildren David, Dylan, David, Sarah, Charlotte, and Samantha; Godchildren Pinkie, Bonnie, Nazy, Edgar, Lisa, Ron, and Caroline; and countless friends, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law. He'd be mad that we didn't list everyone. He adored his friends and family.
Services will be held at St. John Berchmans Church (2517 West Logan Blvd., Chicago, IL 60647) on November 4, 2023. Visitation at 10:00 AM and Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Lue’s ashes will eternally rest with Irene at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery (1400 South Wolf Rd., Hillside, IL) as their souls dance through the gates of heaven.
