Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased and can be a valuable resource for genealogical research.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, and information about the funeral or memorial service. It may also include biographical details, achievements, and personal anecdotes.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes, it's never too late to write an obituary for someone who has passed away. You can still publish it in a newspaper or online platform as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humorous or lighthearted elements in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some personality and humor into the tribute. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the reading experience more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life or death, it's best to approach them with tact and compassion. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to ensure that you're presenting the information in a way that is respectful and accurate.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the person who has passed away can be a beautiful way to add depth and context to the tribute. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it as well before submitting it for publication.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

This may depend on the publication or platform where the obituary was published. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. Be sure to check their policies beforehand.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

Can I reuse parts of an old obituary when writing a new one?
