Gary Joe Booher - January 04, 1952 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Maysville)
Obituary Preview: Gary Joe Booher, aged 72, passed peacefully from this life on March 25th, 2024, at the Bluegrass Hospice Care Center at the UK Albert Chandler Medical Center. Gary was born on January 4, 1952, in Artesia, California, to the late Billy Joe and Patricia Burrison Booher. At the time of his birth, the family lived in Midway City, California, and in 1957 moved to a small ranch in Norco, California. In 1965 the family moved to Franklin, Kentucky. His love and devotion to music began after he joined Franklin-Simpson High School Band. During his high school years, he developed his musical skills, receiving several superior ratings at solo and ensemble festivals, participation in district and regional Honor Band Festivals and earning membership into the Kentucky Music Educators Association Kentucky All-State Band. In addition to trumpet, Gary also began playing guitar, working in several local rock and roll bands that performed at numerous dances and teen clubs throughout southern Kentucky and middle Tennessee.
Gary graduated from Franklin-Simpson High School in 1970 and entered Morehead State University, majoring in Music Education. While at Morehead, he was a member of the Marching Band, Symphony Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Choir. He pledged and earned membership into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a professional music fraternity. Gary received his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1974, Master of Arts in Secondary Education in 1982, and post graduate certifications in Educational Administration and Leadership in 1987.
In 1974, Gary began a 27 year career as a teacher and administrator for the Mason County School District in Maysville Kentucky. He was Band Director at Mason County High School 1974-1987, Assistant Principal at Mason County High School 1987-1991, Assistant Principal Mason County Middle school 1991-1992, and Director of Technology for the school district from 1992-2001.
As band director, Gary helped get the marching band off the ground. At that time MCHS did not have a football team, and the marching band had existed only one year. In 1974, the new marching band learned a field show, performed at Kentucky Music Educators Association Marching Band Festival and marched in two parades. The band program continued to grow and improve. Over the next fourteen years, the band performed in marching and concert events at the Dogwood Arts Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, Six Flags Over Georgia Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Opryland Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. The band performed at Sea World and the Florida Citrus Bowl in the Great American Band Festival in Orlando. Under Gary’s direction the Mason County High School Band twice performed during pregame at Riverfront Stadium for the Cincinnati Reds. In 1980 the band was selected to perform for President Carter as he made a campaign stop in the Tri-State. Gary was twice elected as President of KMEA district 8, serving two terms on the KMEA Board of Directors.
In 1987, Gary was named Assistant Principal of Mason County High School. He was instrumental in implementing the first computer system in the office at MCHS. This system provided in-house electronic management of attendance, grade reporting, transcripts and finance. The system was then networked to include the schools administrators, counselors and bookkeepers. The high school also installed the first networked computer lab designed to deliver individual instruction to large groups of students. The high school became the technology blueprint for the other school offices and the district office.
In 1992 Gary was named Director of Technology for the Mason County School District. He was involved in the design and implementation of the infrastructure needed to network the entire school district, and purchase and install computers for every classroom. This system would make Internet access, email and school management software available at each teacher’s desk. This was a huge project. Perhaps the biggest challenge was training all teachers, classroom aides and clerks (most had never used a computer) to take full advantage of this powerful new tool. The implementation strategy and program was very successful. Mason County was recognized by the Kentucky Department of Education as one of eight Technology Innovation Centers to serve as a demonstration site and good model of roll out strategies for the new Kentucky Educational Technology System. Gary served on the Advisory Board of the KDE KETS rollout program, as well as an officer in the Kentucky Association of Technology Coordinators. Gary made numerous presentations on Educational Technology at state conferences, including the Kentucky Teaching and Learning In-Service Conference, Kentucky Association of School Administrators Conference, Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service conference, Kentucky Association of Technology Coordinators Summer Camp, Kentucky Department of Education Technology Integration In-Service Conference, and the Kentucky Educational Technology In-Service Conference. Gary received the Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky Association of Technology Coordinators.
Gary was a life-long musician. He continued performing for most of his life. He performed with the Limestone Brass Ensemble, Woody Woods Big Band, and the Maysville Community Band. He played in the orchestra for several musicals for the Maysville Players and the Mason County High School Concert Choir and Orchestra Spring Musicals. Gary was presented the Distinguished Service Award from the Mason County High School Concert Choir and Orchestra and Twenty-Five Year Service award from the Kentucky Music Educators Association.
After retiring, Gary enjoyed golfing, cooking, woodworking, traveling and spending time with friends and family, especially his three grandsons.
Proceeding him in death was the love of his life, Deborah Freeman Booher, whom he married on August 11th, 1973. And in addition to his wife and parents, Gary was also preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Booher Johnson.
Gary is survived by his children, Kelly Jo (Alan) Mayes, of Lexington, KY, James Patrick Booher, of Maysville, KY, and Laura Leigh (Bill) Summers, of Lexington, KY, and three grandchildren, Braden Mayes, Ian Mayes, and Wiley Summers. His children and grandsons were his biggest joy. Gary is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special “Framily” of life-long friends. Gary composed this obituary and ended it with, “You can’t say it hasn’t been great!”
Serving as pallbearers are Alan Mayes, Bill Summers, Braden Mayes, Ian Mayes, Chris Carrier, Joshua Carrier, Chris Kelley, and Blake Bolce. Honorary pallbearers include Daryl Angel, Danny Elam, Phil Grigson, Eddie Prichard, Phil Shepherd, Terry Thompson, and Wiley Summers.
The funeral will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, March 28th, at Moore and Parker Funeral Home in Maysville, Kentucky, with a graveside service following at Green Acres Memory Garden Cemetery. The visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00pm on Wednesday, March 27th.
