Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about their funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to share news of the passing with friends, family, and community, while also honoring the deceased person's life.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to celebrate the life of the deceased, share memories and stories, and notify others of their passing. They also serve as a historical record of the person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length than print publications.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for print publication.

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. Online obituaries may offer more flexibility for editing or updating.

What if I find an error in an obituary?

If you discover an error in an obituary, contact the publication or online platform immediately to request corrections. They will work with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

If you're close to someone who has no immediate family, you can still write an obituary to honor their memory and share their story with others.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Be mindful of sharing sensitive or private information that might be painful for survivors or compromise confidentiality. Focus on celebrating the person's life and accomplishments rather than revealing potentially hurtful details.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary, helping to capture the essence of the person being honored.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance, consider enlisting the help of a funeral home staff member, a professional writer, or a trusted friend or family member.

Saving a copy of the online obituary as a PDF or screenshot can help preserve it for future generations. You may also consider printing out copies for physical archiving.
