Obituary Preview: Raymond G. Martino, of Bethany, CT, entered into rest on April 11, 2020. He was born on November 14, 1940, in Plattsburg, New York, one of four children of Francis and Florence Martineau. For over 50 years, he was the beloved companion of Carolyn Polio. Ray also leaves behind a daughter, Phyllis Martino; grandson, Jonathan Martino; and extended family and friends.

He enjoyed horseback riding, especially dressed as Santa, to the delight of all. Ray had a passion for country music, RV road trips, farm auctions, and sitting with a lap full of rescue cats. Another passion was driving rigs—the bigger the better.  Affectionately called “Mayor of Sperry Road, ” Ray was always very generous with his time, helping family and friends at a moment’s notice. Snowstorms were his specialty, often surprising neighbors when they discovered their driveways had been plowed.
Ray shared half of their big barn with Coco, the horse. On field trips over the years from her day care on the property, Carolyn’s little students were greeted by the huge, papier-mache Lions Club parade mascot roaring from the rafters. A special treat for the children was to sit, propped up, in the driver’s seat of the many parked treasures, including an Amish wagon, antique fire truck, backhoe, tractor, crane, and one or two RVs.
Burial will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Woodbridge, at a future date.

Thelma L. Lumpkin - December 03, 1925 - January 23, 2019

Departed: 01/23/2019 (New Haven)
Obituary Preview: Thelma Lydia Santoro Lumpkin (Teddy), of Bethany passed away peacefully at her home January 23, 2019. She was born the third of three children December 3, 1925 in her parental home at 32 Granger Street, Waterbury, Connecticut, after her mother had been told that she would not be able to have any more children, a fact that always amused both Teddy and her mother.  Starting the third grade at H.S. Chase Grammar School, Waterbury, Teddy was a writer. A collection of her poems was hung in the office of the school superintendent. A graduate of Crosby High School, Waterbury, and Simmons College, Boston, she directed her first play at Simmons and was class song leader for all four years. She led her class in the Alma Mater from the stage of Symphony Hall at Simmons night at the Boston Pops concerts and graduated with a BS degree in English and Publishing. Eventually, she expanded her public relations and advertising careers with special study at Yale and Harvard, and is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the East, Foremost Women in communications, and The World Who’s Who of Women, and the Two Thousand Women of Achievement, published in Cambridge and London, England, respectively. As playwright, her first play, Shadow of Reason, won the Connecticut State Drama Tournament. Her second play, Susanne’s Room, won second place in a national playwriting contest and was performed in St. Louis, MO. By commission of the Town of Woodbridge, she wrote book, music, and lyrics for a historical musical, Amity Parish, and directed it for three performances with a cast and crew of 150 townspeople. In 1960, she rode horseback with Ronald Regan who was passing through Waterbury on a speaking tour. At her invitation he stopped off in Bethany, CT where Teddy boarded her horse and spent the day riding with Teddy and three friends, later taking her and two friends out to dinner. At a time when allowing women into undergraduate study at Harvard was unthinkable, she was the first woman ever admitted to those hallowed halls and dormitories for a seminar in Advertising and Marketing Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, under the sponsorship of the Advertising Federation of America. The seminar consisted of 60 top male executives of national corporations, and one woman, Teddy, who was Advertising Manager of the Waterbury National Bank at the time. She was the only graduate of the two-month seminar who received a kiss with her certificate. During her career with the bank, the 1963 annual report she designed won the Financial World Annual Report award.  In earlier careers, after running her own advertising agency for five years, she was Public Relations Director of St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. She moved to Bethany in 1962 where she volunteered at the Bethany Library, helped establish a town scenic roads ordinance, helped initiate an increase in the tow’s financial support of the elderly, and was a founding member and later president of The Bethany Horsemen. Through the yeasts, she owned six horses and kept them all for their lifetimes. She married G. Thomas Lumkin Jr. of North Carolina in 1966, retired in 1967, and juggled marriage, horses, and writing, not always in that order, until Tom’s death in 1989. From 1995 until her death, she wrotea book every year and self-published them, giving as gifts to local libraries, family, and friends. Her parents Fiorinda M. DiNapoli Santoro and Quirino C. Santoro, and two brothers, Primo”Bud” M.V. and Quentin V. are deceased. She leaves many beloveds: her Corgis and horse; niece, Susanne Shaffer Santoro Whayne and great-niece Miranda Jane Miller, both of Massachusetts; nephew, Christopher Allen Santoro, of Florida; stepchildren, Kathryn Love Lumpkin of North Carolina and G. Thomas Lumpkin III of New York; cousins in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Florida; godchildren, the late Joanne Acford Burgay remembered here, and Cathie Jean Pugliese Cameron of Florida. Teddy loved the solitary life she chose as a writer and never felt alone.
All services will be held privately. The Monahan, Cox, Smith & Crimmins Funeral Home, Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions in Teddy’s name may be made to the Bethany Horseman 340 Old Mill Rd. Bethany, CT 06524.

Francis Pinto - February 12, 1928 - July 05, 2018

Departed: 07/05/2018 (New Haven)
Obituary Preview: Our Lord called his reverent servant, Frank Pinto, into perpetual rest on July 5, 2018.  He spent his last moments on earth surrounded by his closest friends and family.  Born in a closely knit Italian immigrant enclave in the Hill Section of New Haven on February 12, 1928 son of the late Michael and Pauline Cardinuto Pinto, Frank spent the majority of his 90 years as a New Haven resident.  After attending Hillhouse High School, Frank enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, meritoriously and gallantly contributing to the World War II effort.  He often reflected on this chapter of his life with jealous regard as it perpetuated the deep patriotism he imparted on his friends and family.  His formal military training as a combustion engine mechanic eased his transition to civilian life and afforded him the opportunity to continue doing what he loved.  For more than 50 years he owned A and P motors in West Haven, CT.  Settling in the Morris Cove Section of New Haven, Frank remained a pillar of the community.  A devout Catholic and member of Saint Bernadette Church Parish, he attended mass daily until his health precluded his doing so.  Even then, fellow parishioners brought him communion regularly.  Frank loved wine, his Italian heritage, chatting with neighbors, buying/selling cars, and spending time with those closest to him.  He imparted his gems of wisdom on those around him through many valuable lessons, most notably: love your country, family is the most important thing in the world, good company makes bad wine palatable, don’t steal fried chicken, and never cheat at cards.  Anyone who has ever eaten Sunday dinner on his back deck overlooking Long Island Sound can attest.  Frank exuded passion in everything he did especially going out for pizza, going furniture shopping, or watching his beloved New York Yankees.  Frank is predeceased by his wife Margaret Pinto, daughter Deborah Ann Brill, and brother Michael Pinto. He is survived by his daughter Francine Pinto; long-time loving companion Rosemary Spring; almost daughters Carol (David) Cyr and Debra (Robert) Forster and son-in-law Christopher Brill. Also survived by his grandchildren Arthur and Michael DeCato, Samantha and Gabrielle D’Errico, Julia Cyr, Carolyn Levy, Robert and Nicholas Forster, and Katie Gould and great grandchildren Emmaleigh, Dominic, and Daphne Decato, his beloved dog Diogi, and many nieces and nephews.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important details about their life and legacy. They can be a valuable resource for genealogists, historians, and researchers, and can also help loved ones process their grief.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. However, some funeral homes or newspapers may offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also want to include a photo, quotes, or other personal touches.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's best to aim for 150-200 words. However, some publications may have stricter word limits or offer longer formats for more detailed tributes.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture their personality and spirit.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

This is a personal decision that depends on your comfort level and the circumstances surrounding the death. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer not to.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check with the specific publication or platform for their submission guidelines. Some may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions. Be sure to follow their formatting and content guidelines carefully.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?
