Garland Mansel - February 06, 1931 - February 19, 2022

Departed: 02/19/2022 (St. John)
Obituary Preview: https://youtu.be/alSIJCKHfvA  ***Link for Livestream
Lewis Garland Mansel was born on February 6, 1931 in Vernon, Texas to Walter Lewis and Berniece Mansel.  He went home to be with his heavenly father on February 19, 2022, surrounded by his family.  He was a young 91.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dena (Campbell) Mansel, of the home; sons: Bradley Mansel (wife Betsy) of Hutchinson, KS and Jon Mansel (wife Vicky) of Manhattan, KS; daughters: Brenda Mansel Reno of St. John, KS; April Swartz (husband Bill) of Manhattan, KS; and Kelly Mansel-Ramsey of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren: Christopher Garland Mansel (wife Marisa) of St. John, KZS; Zeboriah Mansel Carter (wife Jessica) of Manhattan, KS; Emily Carter of Salt Lake City, UT; Troy Sallee of Lawrence, KS; Trent Lewis Sallee (wife Hannah) of St. John, KS; Abigail McCall (husband Geoff) of Fort Collins, CO; Molly Mansel of Strong City, KS; Michelle Erichsen (husband Ryan) of Manhattan, KS; and Gina Mansel of Nickerson, KS; eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
Garland married Dena (Campbell) on September 3, 1960 and moved his family to St. John in 1963.  Garland was a brick mason by trade, working from the age of 15 and retiring after 63 years of creating beautiful work for thousands of people.  Garland loved his work; he was   of an artist than a mason.  If you ever visited him on the job site, you would hear the country music playing on the old radio he carried around.  His sons and grandsons all helped through the years in the business.  The business he built was then passed on to his son and then to his grandsons.  Garland had a tremendous work ethic and passed that on to his children and grandchildren.
He also loved gardening and blessed the community by leaving produce and peaches on doorsteps all over town.  He never knew a stranger and everyone he met was better off for knowing him.  He had a positive attitude that was contagious and was always ready and willing to help out someone in need.
Garland was a God-fearing man, and let God's word lead his life.  One of his favorite Bible verses was Micah 6:8.  "He has shown you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."  His life modeled that passage.  He was one of the kindest and most humble men you would ever know.  Garland was active in missions to Old Mexico with the church, constructing buildings and assisting the under-privileged, sharing God's love for them all.  His son Jon, wife Dena and various grandchildren often joined him on these missions.
Garland served on many boards and committees in St. John.  He served on the USD 350 School Board for over ten years; Fairview Park Cemetery Board, City of St. John Zoning Board, and the St. John Main Street Program.  He was a past grand master of the IOOF Lodge #539, and received the Meritorious Service Jewel of the Order of Odd Fellowship.
Garland will be so missed by all that knew and loved him.  But we know he's already busy in his new home with his heavenly father and all of the loved ones that went before him.  He told a grandson that once he got to heaven, he was going to lay the golden bricks.  And I'm sure he's already started.
Services for Garland will be held on Friday, February 25th, 2022 at the church of Christ in St. John, Kansas at 11:00, with lunch to follow.  Visitation will be held at Minnis Chapel in St. John, Kansas on Thursday, February 24th, from 1:00 to 7:00 pm.  The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorials may be mailed to Minnis Chapel, PO Box 34, St. John, KS 67576.  The following memorials have been established in honor of Garland: Church of Christ 2nd Mile Food Bank Silver Maple Camp

Obituary Preview: ***You may view the live stream Friday on Facebook page @ecabilene or on the Emmanuel Church Youtube Channel. Penni Dawn Britt-Heller April 27, 1963 – January 10, 2022
A nurse on earth is now an angel in heaven.
Penni Dawn Britt-Heller, 58, died on January 10, 2022 at home in St. John, Kansas with her husband and family by her side.
Penni was born April 27, 1963 in Abilene, Kansas to Jean Ellen (DeWeese) Britt and Gerald Duane (Sonny) Britt. The youngest of four children, she grew up on the family farm once owned by her great grandparents in the Willowdale Township of the Talmage community. It was there that her love for animals and all things farm life were nurtured. That love grew even more after she married Bruce Heller, and they moved to his farm in St. John, Kansas.
She attended Talmage Grade School, Chapman Middle School, and Chapman High School, graduating in 1981, before continuing her education in nursing.
Penni began a long and dedicated nursing career in 1985 after graduating from Asbury School of Nursing in Salina and worked in hospitals, clinics, and home health in Manhattan, Salina, Junction City, Price, Utah; Alma, Nebraska; Norton, Salina, and Pratt, and served as a traveling nurse early in her career, serving in Dallas and Hawaii.
She loved teaching others the art of nursing and served as a clinical instructor for Colby Community College from 1999-2010, while also earning her BSN in Nursing from Fort Hays University in 2006. Her former students continue to express their love and gratitude for all she taught them, including the friendly and caring manner with which she cared for them and her patients.
As much as she loved nursing, she loved time spent with family even more. The vacations, campouts, birthday celebrations, family reunions and other events that brought family together were important to her. Penni was a constant energetic, fun-loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece. cousin and friend who loved to make everyone smile and laugh.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Heller of St. John; son, Drew Britt and wife Brianna of Cave Creek, AZ; mother, Jean Britt of Abilene; sister Shawni (John) Sheets of Abilene; Rory (Deb) Britt of Abilene; and Shane (Toni) Britt of Kansas City.
Also surviving are stepsons, David (Veronica) Heller of St. John; Derrick (Weslea) Johnson of Everett, Washington on Aircraft Carrier Nimitz; stepdaughter Kelsey Coe of Houston, Texas; and grandchildren Annabelle and Kensington Britt; Sam, Jazlene, and Jade Heller; and Benjamin and Aubrey Johnson.
She is also survived by her special Little Sister, Gracie Dibble of Phillipsburg.
Penni was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Duane (Sonny) Britt; her maternal grandparents, V.P. and Georgia DeWeese; and paternal grandparents, Elvin and Lona Britt.
Along with her love of family and nursing, faith was an ever present and important part of Penni’s life. She wanted everyone to know that even though any of us may face adversities in life, we must still give God the glory and thank him. Never, throughout her entire cancer journey or life, did Penni feel that God left her. She hoped that because of her faith, she may have planted seeds in people to seek Christ.
The family invites you to help us celebrate Penni’s life, laughter, sense of humor, smile, the love she gave family and friends, and her never-ending faith during a celebration of life at Emmanuel Church in Abilene at 7 p.m. Friday, January 14 with Pastor Jon Griffith officiating.  A second service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 15 at Trinity Community Church in Hudson, Kansas with Pastor Wade Russell officiating. Orpha Wretling, 90, passed in peace on Nov. 18, 2021 at Leisure Homestead, Stafford, KS. She was born on March 13, 1931 to Theodore F. and Hulda L. (Alpers) Witt in Great Bend, Kansas. Orpha was preceded in death by both of her parents, an infant brother, Vernon Witt; sisters Veleta (Witt) Mueller and Cleora (Witt) Francis and brother Norman Witt. She is survived by her children and step- children---daughter Kathy (Jerry) Hinde of Windsor, Colorado; son Mike (Jessie) LeRoy of St. John, Kansas; daughter Kristy (Mark) Moore of Eaton, Colorado; daughter Karen (Fred) Westhusin of Plainville, Kansas; Chuck (Betty) Wretling of Littleton, Colorado; Dee Dannenberg of Overland Park, Kansas and Mark (Sandra) Wretling of Salina, Kansas. She enjoyed 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren
and her beloved nieces and nephews. Orpha graduated from St. John High School in 1949. After high school she pursued her nursing degree from St. Rose Nursing School in Great Bend, Kansas. She graduated in 1952 as a Registered Nurse—a career she enjoyed and pursued over
the next 40 years in various small hospitals and clinics in Kansas. She married Kenneth R. LeRoy in June of 1952. During their 22 years of marriage they resided in Great Bend, Kansas, El Paso, Texas, Fairbanks, Alaska and Seward, Kansas. Their early years of marriage took them to Texas and Alaska as part of
Ken’s military duties. Together they had 4 children. They divorced in 1974. In 1976 Orpha married Rev. Charles E. Wretling in Hutchinson, Kansas. They blended a family of 7 children with 2 still at home. Together, they continued to work in his vocation of Methodist ministry for about 20 years living in 4 small towns in central and western Kansas until they retired in 1992. Prior to retirement they purchased their retirement home in March, 1976 in Wilson Lake Estates in Florissant, Colorado. Over several years they made this mountain cabin into their
own beloved home entertaining many family gatherings. In 2008 Orpha and Charles sold their mountain home and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to enjoy life at the Worthington Independent Living facility. They were
available for more family events and made new friends over the next 5 years. Charles passed away in December of 2013. For another change, Orpha moved into the Good Samaritan Independent Living in Windsor the spring of 2015. She
enjoyed meeting new friends and the many activities at Good Sam for 3 years. She renewed interest in her hobbies of sewing, knitting and reading books. In the summer of 2018 she moved in with her 2 Colorado daughters with help from extended family. For 15 months she split each week between their homes in Windsor and Eaton. When it came time for assisted living, we found The Bridge @ Greeley. She moved in Labor Day weekend 2019. Her stay here was brief because of a fall in December, 2019 which required hospitalization. Skilled nursing care was needed next and she was blessed to move back to Kansas into Leisure Homestead. Having family there and being back in the county she was raised in,
was comforting. A Celebration of Orpha’s life will be held on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 at Hudson Community

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, such as the date and time of the funeral or memorial service. They also provide a sense of closure for those who are grieving and allow them to pay their respects to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos or documents.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, ObitsArchive.com, or FuneralHome.com. These platforms often offer additional features like guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $500 or more, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to take control of how they want to be remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as a "self-obit" or "autobit."

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the person's name and date of death. You can also contact local libraries or genealogical societies for assistance.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

A well-written obituary can serve as a starting point for a eulogy, but it's generally recommended to expand on the information and add more personal anecdotes and stories to make it more engaging and heartfelt.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?
