Ronald David Jackson, Sr. - May 29, 1950 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Ronald David Jackson, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 2024, after a nine year very hard-fought battle with esophageal cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo Jr. and Doris (Hickman) Jackson, his wife of 46 years, Mildred (Galloway) Jackson, and his sister Linda Sue (Jackson) Edmonds. Ronnie, in true warrior fashion, remained at his home until the last week before his passing, enjoying the 70-degree March wild weather week, then being transported to Delaware Hospice on the first day of spring.
Ronnie was born in Erie, PA, on May 29, 1950, after which the family moved to Orlando, Florida in 1959. He participated in cub scouts and in middle school, he played Pony League Baseball with his brother, Jim, on the Kentucky Fried Chicken team where he played the catcher position. Ronnie graduated from Maynard Evans High School in 1968.
Ronnie enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1969 and completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning, GA, going on to complete his initial training at Fort Sam Houston, TX. He served on active duty as a medic, as did his father (WWII) and grandfather (WWI) before him. Ron was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War where he worked as both a signal man and a corpsman. He served in the emergency room, assisted in surgeries, and delivered babies in the maternity ward. Ron commented recently that he didn’t like to give the little babies their shots because they cried, and he felt bad about that. He also recently shared that while overseas he received orders to deploy to Vietnam. He said he didn’t tell his parents, as he didn’t want them to worry. But five days before he was to leave for Vietnam, the orders were cancelled and the draw down of U.S. troops began.
Ronnie heard the call of duty once again in February 1985, and he enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard and served over 17 years. He served with Det-1 HC 280th Signal Battalion in Laurel, DE, Co A 280th Signal Battalion in Seaford, DE, and HHC 280th Signal Battalion in Georgetown, DE, culminating in his position as Telecom Operations Chief, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Battalion-wide, Ron was famous for the Jackson “gray bag.” He had a gym bag/tote that he packed for every place he went with the DEARNG. It didn’t matter if he was going for two days, two weeks, or two months; Ron always carried the same “gray bag.” He was also known by his fellow Veterans for his loyalty, quiet assurance, and quick wit. Ron retired from the DEARNG in 2002.
Ron was employed at Tom Best Store at Five Points in Lewes, DE, for 11 years in the hardware section. After that, he worked as a custodian at Cape Henlopen High School for several years and then transferred closer to home to work at Milton Middle School. Ronnie was named Custodian of the Year in 1999 and later retired after giving 25 years to the Cape Henlopen School District.
Ron’s favorite hobbies included fishing (especially for sea bass and flounder with his friends, Big Mike and Philly Rob), deer hunting (especially with his brother, Kenny), gardening and feeding a multitude of birds - black oil sunflower seeds - only the best for his birds. He was also known as the “hummingbird whisperer,” having at least a dozen of the tiny creatures buzzing around his hat as he refilled their sugar water dutifully, sometimes as much as three times a day. Ron enjoyed wearing hats and camo and any type of shirt that had deer or fish on it. He also loved hanging out at reunions, talking to his custodian buddy, JD, and enjoyed visiting neighbors and with members of the Jackson family any time. Ronnie was famous for his home-made vegetable beef soup. He enjoyed watching westerns, nature shows and military movies. He only watched football if the Eagles were playing. His music tastes ranged from Charlie Daniels and Kenny Rogers to Aaron Neville and Nat King Cole. He only played video games for a brief period of time in the 1980s. His favorite games were Duck Hunt, Frogger and Asteroids. Once he got a blister from playing Asteroids too long, so that was the end of the “gaming season” for Ron. Well, at least until he discovered “virtual reality” fishing in 2023…
Ronnie is survived by his faithful dog Koko, devoted son Ronald (Gator) Jackson, Jr. (Angie), beloved stepdaughter Beth (Macrino) Harris (Dwayne), stepdaughter Millie (Macrino) Rodman (John), and stepson John Macrino, and nine step-grandchildren Avery, Madilyn, Hali, Josh, Abraham, Jay, Kate, Amber and Nick. He is also survived by his brothers James (Jim) Jackson (Linda Jean), Kenny (Hawkeye) Jackson (Sandi), and sister Sondra (Jo-Jo) (Jackson) Green (Jim), and Gator’s friend, Robert Santiago, who was like another son to Ronnie, many cousins, nieces, nephews, fellow Veterans, co-workers, fishing buddies and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 10:00am in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966. A celebration of life is being planned for a future date to be determined.
Ronnie’s family has established a “WISH 4 FISH” fund, with proceeds sponsoring individuals with cancer to go charter boat fishing on the Thelma Dale, Fisherman’s Wharf, Lewes, DE. Departed: 02/08/2024 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Brenda June Dykes DiMichele was born June 3rd, 1944, in Brundidge, Alabama. She was raised in Troy, Alabama, where she met and married a handsome, funny, and confident Yankee, Charles Conrad “Doc” DiMichele, from Delaware (1962). Brenda and Conrad DiMichele were married 61 years, had three children, Andrew Conrad (Susan), Wendy Elizabeth (George Burris) and Patrick Dykes (Ashley). Brenda was surrounded by her family as she made an unexpected detour from this world to her heavenly home on February 8th, 2024.
Brenda devoted nearly four decades in growing the choral/music department at East Mississippi Community College. She was beloved by thousands of students and treated them as her own. She was gifted in bringing music and musical productions to life and brought many awards back to the “Scooba Tech” campus. Upon retirement and moving to Delaware, Brenda was active as an organist for New Castle Presbyterian Church, New Castle, DE and most recently St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown, DE.
Brenda is known and loved for her ever present smile, infectious laughter, gentle kindness, endless patience, and great compassion for others. She was fiercely devoted to her family, her country, and treated friends like family. She took delight in her life as a musician and her steadfast faith was an anchor. Brenda could be found rooting for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, enjoying beach days, her gardens, and her passion for heirloom flowers. She was always ready for making plans for family trips, texting, keeping tabs of folks through Facebook, and late-night piddling around the house. She shared her unconditional love and was a devout cheerleader for each child and grandchild in every endeavor, and most recently, thrilled at the gift of being a great-grandmother.
Brenda is the daughter of the late William Fred and late Audie Lois Dykes. She is survived by her siblings, Joan (the late Paul Word), Freddy Dykes (Sylvia), Becky (Alan Williams) and her amazing nieces, nephews and cousins that she loved dearly. She will be so very missed by her grandchildren, Morgan Elisabeth, Shannon George Anthony, Willow Kai, Otto Harrison and great granddaughter Emilia Elizabeth (Mili). She was first in line for all of Morgan and Willow’s musical theatre productions, shows and events, which was her passion. She cringed through most of Shannon’s sporting events, especially wrestling, and always encouraged and took delight in Otto making the world his oyster. Then there was her newest and tiniest titan, Mili, who brought her great joy.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta said, “The greatest poverty is to be unloved.” To have known Sweet Brenda as a beloved wife, Mama, Nana, Mother-In-Love (not law), sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, friend, teacher, or honorary mom/honorary nana, means you had the luxury of being abundantly loved. For that, we are all greatly blessed.

After being a coal miner for 30 years in Virginia, his father and mother moved to Delaware in 1958 and worked at Chrysler. Shortly afterwards, in 1961 Woody moved to Delaware where he met Cindy. The two tied the knot in 1962 for 54 years of marriage before she preceded him in death.
Woody was a hardworking man who retired from GM in 1993 after working there for 30 years, he drove for Enterprise for 7 years, owned a sub shop in Millsboro for 7 years, ran painting crews for 8 years and has had his own construction company for 3 years.

He loved to sing Christian, Country, Rod Stewart, bluegrass and a wide range of music. He loved to purchase large children’s picture Bibles to randomly hand them out to children. He was a very loyal and kind hearted soul with a smile to light up the whole world. Woody cherished togetherness and surely was a social butterfly everywhere he went. He never met a stranger! Every morning he would start his days by waking up to drink a cup of coffee, read out of his Bible, and then say a prayer as he’d close his Bible, give it a kiss and then pick a promise verse out of his jar that his granddaughter, Heather, had handmade for him. When he would set his mind to something it was considered done and there were no two ways about it because his word was set in stone like his promises. He was a very strong and truly resilient, amazing man who is absolutely going to be greatly missed by many.

Charles E. Marsh, Jr. - April 26, 1948 - January 29, 2024

Departed: 01/29/2024 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Charles E. Marsh, Jr., lifelong horseman
Charlie Marsh, Jr. (75) passed from this life to Glory on January 29, 2024, following a long battle with cancer. Charlie was a "Beebe Baby" and 1966 graduate of Rehoboth High School, where he was #34 on the football team. Like all the boys at that small school, he played every sport. One of 9 children born to Charles and Virginia (nee Dickerson) Marsh, Charlie grew up in a home on Rehoboth Avenue Extended, across the street from his grandparents, Peter and Hettie Jane (nee Paynter) Marsh. Sadly, those folks and their homes are gone, but they are lovingly remembered.
Charlie and his brothers and sisters are descendants of the golden cross of Sussex County ancestry; that is, the blending of the Marsh and Paynter families. In the mid-1600s, Paul Marsh and Richard Paynter traveled from England to eastern Sussex County, where they became the progenitors of these 2 powerhouse families, who have remained in the Lewes/Rehoboth area for more than 350 years, including the 26th Governor of Delaware, Samuel Paynter.
Charlie had a passion for horses and spent his life driving and training harness horses. He started driving for his father's stable while still in his teens, in Delaware and as far away as New York State and New England. He attended Brandywine College and served as a detective on the Rehoboth Beach Police force. Later, he was trainer for Jay Prettyman's Sea Star Stables, earning track records and numerous stakes races in Delaware and Maryland. Then, Charlie established his own stable, working out of the family farm located adjacent to Jungle Jim's off Rt. 1, racing in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. His career reached its pinnacle between 1986 and 1991, during which time he trained several of the top racehorses in the country, including Happy Affair, who won a heat of The Little Brown Jug, and successfully raced on the Grand Circuit.
In 1992, Charlie leased Angler's Restaurant on the Lewes Canal, which he renovated and operated successfully, and then sold to Irish Eyes. He also managed Shawnee Country Club's food service, and worked for purveyors, Holt Paper Co. and Wagner Food Service. Throughout this period, he continued to raise, train and race his stable of racehorses. Charlie served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Delaware Standardbred Owners Association and was a member of the United States Trotting Association, and Sons of the American Legion Post 17 at Lewes Beach.
Additionally, the Marsh family has been operating Charley's Christmas Trees for more than 40 years, first at the Rehoboth Avenue Extended property, then at the KMart garden center, and currently at Jungle Jim’s. Customers have long-enjoyed dealing with Charlie Sr. and Jr., and now with the younger generations.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill; and sister, Jeanne. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Leslie; brothers, Bo, Steve, and Jeff; sisters, Bonnie Cunningham, Barbara Huber, and Wendy Marsh; and half-sister, Charlene. He loved and will be missed by 18 nieces and nephews and 20 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2024, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rehoboth Beach, followed by interment at the Marsh Family Cemetery, Kings Creek CC in Rehoboth.
