Wanda "Sue" Whitley Hughes - April 11, 1960 - April 16, 2023

Departed: 04/16/2023 (Kinston)
Obituary Preview: Snow Hill --
The family of Wanda "Sue" Whitley Hughes is saddened to announce our beloved Mother, Nana, Sister, Aunt, and friend passed away Sunday, April 16, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. Sue was born April 11, 1960 in Pitt County, NC to the late Nancy Bunn Whitley and the late Thomas Whitley. She married the late Andy Hughes on November 25, 1977. Family was everything to Sue. She and Andy were blessed with five children Jimmie, Jamie, Lucian, Dillon, and Amanda. She had a special bond with each of them. The only thing she loved more than her children were her grandchildren, which she was blessed with 9 of. Nothing brought Sue more joy than snuggling a grandbaby and spending precious moments with them. Sue was an active gardener and loved growing new vegetables and sharing them with others. Being able to nurture and care for something to help it grow was her specialty, whether it was people, animals, or plants. She breathed love into everything around her. She spent her life caring and doing for others, never expecting anything in return. There wasn't a stranger she wouldn't help or an animal she wouldn't rescue. Nazr Mohammad said: "A person's true wealth is the good he or she does in the world." If this is true, Sue was one of the wealthiest people in the world.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband Jimmie "Andy" Hughes Jr., her mother Nancy Bunn Whitley, and her father Thomas Whitley. Sue is survived by her sons, Jimmie Hughes III and spouse Chrissy Lee, Lucian Hughes and spouse Dana, and Dillon Hughes and spouse Kelly; daughters, Jamie Harris and spouse Joey, and Amanda Cantu and spouse David; grandchildren, Joe Harris, Adam Spence, Nick Harris, Gracie Hughes, Mary Beth Hughes, Abigail Harris, Piper Harris, Olivia Hughes, and Whitney Hughes; sister, Gladys Adkins and spouse Windell; nephews, Cody Adkins and Logan Adkins. In lieu of traditional services, a Celebration of Life will be held at Sue's home at 2563 Browntown Rd, Snow Hill, NC. For anyone wanting to pay respects or visit with the family, Sue's Celebration will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 at 4pm. Finger foods will be served as Sue felt no get together was complete without food. Feel free to be as late as you would like because Sue was never on time for anything. Additional visits with the family, condolences, cards, and potted plants may be made at or sent to 2563 Browntown Rd, Snow Hill, NC. We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to family and friends for their prayers, care, concern, and support. "Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation." Rumi

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.
