Obituary Preview: THE LOSS OF A WONDERFUL MAN!! Harvey Rodric Kienholz, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on April 22, 2022. Preceded in death by parents, Don and Lois Kienholz, step-mother, Inez, and brother, Luverne Kienholz. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice: brother, Chuck (Gwen); sister-in-law, Shirl. Sons, Don (partner Seth House), and Dean (Sarah). Four grandchildren, Kayla (Joe) Buresh, Megan, Chad and Joelle Kienholz. One great- grandchild, Noa Buresh.
On September 10, 1935, Harvey was born in Bird Island, MN to Don and Lois Kienholz. His mother, Lois (Latham) passed away when he was 11 years old. Later, his father, Donald, remarried Inez Fanjoy of Fairfax, MN. They resided in Bird Island where the three boys, Harvey, Luverne, and Chuck, were raised. During this time, Harvey spent many hours with his Grandpa Kienholz helping on his farm, learning a lot about farming and animals. He attended Bird Island High School and participated in football, baseball, and choir. During this time his passions of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors grew. After high school he attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN where he received his degrees in physical education and history. While there, he played football and started wrestling for the first time. He was very accomplished in both sports.
Upon graduating from Gustavus, he became a teacher and coach. His first teaching job was in Elmore, MN where he met his wife, Janice. They married on December 27, 1960. Harvey & Janice moved to Fridley, MN where Harvey took a teaching job with the Spring Lake Park School District. He coached football, wrestling, baseball, and served as Athletic Director (6 yrs). He was instrumental in helping many students and athletes in becoming better, caring individuals. Harvey retired in 1993 after 34 years of teaching and coaching. He was honored to be inducted into the Spring Lake Park Hall of Fame in 2016.
Harvey enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips and loved to tell stories from his adventures. In February of 2020, Harvey and Janice moved to an Assisted Living Complex. Here, they enjoyed apartment living and were very happy and content.
We thank all of our family and friends for their support and friendship. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and all the many times at the cabin on Mille Lacs. WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE FULL OF HAPPINESS AND MEMORIES!!

Obituary Preview: Luella Marie (Wagner) Wienk Age 99, of Mpls, passed away on her 100th Easter, April 17th, 2022. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Lloyd Wienk, her parents, one brother, two sisters and great granddaughter, Ella Grace Formo. She was born in Emery, SD. She moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she met and married Lloyd. From there, they moved to Rapid City, SD and eventually on to Alexandria, MN where they raised their two daughters, Terri and Kay. She enjoyed a variety of careers both in education at Alexandria Technical College and the medical field at Douglas County Hospital. Her hobbies included playing cards, bingo, golf and cheering for the Vikings and the Twins. She was also a very accomplished seamstress. Whenever asked how she was doing, her response was “ I’m still kickin butt”! Survived by daughters Terri Johnson (Gary), Kay Hedstrom (Mike); 5 grandchildren, Sean’ Johnson, Shannon Formo, Blake Hedstrom (Lyndsey), Cody Hedstrom (Rachel) and Riley Hedstrom; 6 great grandchildren, Carter Formo, Kylee Formo, Leyton Formo, Levi Johnson, Declan Johnson, and Dahlia Hedstrom. Celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 29th at 11:00am at Miller Funeral Home in Fridley, MN with visitation 1 hour prior to service. Interment St. Marys Cemetery and Mausoleum, Alexandria, MN.

Harlan will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 68 years, Joanne, his children: Jeff and Lila Hokanson, Jerry and Peg Hokanson, Judy (Hokanson) and Robert Lachinski, Jill (Hokanson) and Mark Lambert, Jaci (Hokanson) Hawley and Terry Randall, brothers Warren and Roger Hokanson, 16 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Inga Hokanson, brother Larry Hokanson, sister Marilyn (Hokanson) Erickson, and great-grandchild Lewis O’Donnell.
Harlan was well-known as a successful painting contractor and ran his family business for many years. Once retired, he loved spending time golfing at his homes in Ham Lake, MN, and Naples, FL, and hunting & fishing at his lake home in Longville, MN. Harlan will be remembered by family and friends as a loving husband and father.
Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 22nd at Miller Funeral Home with Gathering one hour prior.

Frank Daniel Sczepanski - May 15, 1938 - April 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Frank D. Sczepanski was born on May 15, 1938, to William and Florence (Gajeski) Sczepanski in Stephen, MN. He was a graduate of the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN.
In 1965, Frank was united in marriage to Annette Satterstrom, who died in 1966; their daughter is Jennifer. Frank married Charlotte Bleess in 1969 and added to their family John, Paul and Mary Beth.
Frank’s professional career began when he came to Minneapolis to work for his brother-in-law Dick Rodin in passenger elevator construction, in 1963. Between 1975 and 1979, he was self-employed as owner of Frank’s Tree Service (during the peak of Dutch Elm outbreak in the metro area). He then worked at various elevator companies in the Twin Cities area, until injury forced his retirement in 1995.  Having an agricultural background in his youth, he acquired a gift for growing beautiful flowers, shrubbery, and lush green lawns – which his children and neighbors remember well.  In his leisure time he enjoyed “cruising” in his immaculately detailed car and giving city workers and city servants a hard time.
Frank passed away on April 10, 2022, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children: Jennifer (Jim) Pearson, John (Katie) Sczepanski, Paul (Jackie) Sczepanski, Mary Beth (Jesse Munter); grandchildren: Matthew, Lauren, Brianna, Adam, Emmy, William, Erica, Owen, and Isaac; sibling, Adele Nowacki; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26th at Miller Funeral Home in Fridley.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27th at Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids.

Obituary Preview: Angelo Olaf Vang, age 5 of Maple Grove, passed away March 28th at St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN from pediatric pulmonary hypertension. Angelo was born on July 23, 2016 at 23 weeks weighing 15 ounces. He spent the first 18 months of his life under the loving care of the M Health Children’s Hospital before adoption. With an infectious smile and a contagious laugh, Angelo brought joy to everyone he met. He loved Disney movies, Sonic the Hedgehog, music, books and Bowser. Hours before his passing, he defeated Bowser one last time on his Nintendo Switch. Preceded in death by Grandma Meg, Aunt Ev and Great Grandma Betty. Survived by mom, Kelly and dad, Willie, Grandpa Bob, Grandpa Dave, Grandma Beth, and Grandma Kristine and many loving members of his team that contributed to his growth; friends, family, nurses, doctors and teachers. Funeral service is Thursday April 7th at noon at Holy Name of Jesus, 155 County Road 24 in Wayzata. Visitation 10 am at the church. Age 86, of New Brighton, formerly Sauk Centre, MN passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022. He was a graduate of Sauk Centre High School in 1953. Don was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mounds View for over 60 years. At Messiah, he was an elder, president of the congregation, and most recently he was on the senior maintenance team. He really enjoyed his time with the Messiah family. He was a past union president for the American Can Company and worked there for 44 years and was on the board of directors for the Canco Credit Union. Recently he enjoyed playing cards with good friends as much as he could. Don’s talents were many, but by far his favorite role was as beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to so many. Don’s main passions were hunting, fishing, cribbage, and a long suffering MN sports fan. Preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Marge Eggers; parents Ed and Helma Eggers, child Dorie Jean Eggers, and son-in-law Terry Gunderson. He is survived by son Bob (Kathy) Eggers, daughter Cheryl Eggers, daughter Julie Gunderson, son Mark (Laurie) Eggers; three grandchildren, Jenny (Reid) Schuerman, Erik Gunderson, and Elizabeth Eggers; two great grandchildren Asher and Aden MacPherson; siblings Gale (Karen) Eggers, Nadine (Dick) Lovik, Doug (Linda) Eggers, Ruth Voss, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Eleanor Blilie; brothers, Gary Blilie and Curtis Blilie. Survived by son, Jason Blilie;  brothers, Gerald Blilie and Everett Blilie; sisters, Shirley Wolf, Renae Godejohn, Janice Albers, Linda Albers; and many other relatives and friends. Larry grew up in Comstock, Minnesota and attended Barnesville High School, graduating in 1960. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1966. He moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Western Electric until it closed. He then worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement at the age of 62. Larry was a loving father, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved spending time with Jason and at his lake home. He enjoyed lutefisk dinners and playing 31 with family and friends. Larry will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be held at 1PM on Friday, April 8th, 2022 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Assembly area #3. Friends and family are all welcome to attend.

Alejandro Valenzuela Rojas Jr. also known as Alex, Jr & Jano of Shakopee, MN, passed Thursday March 17, 2022, from kidney failure and cancer. Alejandro Jr. passed at his brothers’ home in Mounds View MN.
He was born January 21, 1977, in Salinas, California to Alejandro Rojas Sr. and Hortencia Valenzuela. Alejandro Jr. is survived by his wife, Gris Garcia Rojas and his 9-year-old son Ethan Rojas; parents, Alejandro Sr. from Minnesota and Hortencia Valenzuela of California; he is also survived by 2 sisters, Ivette and Carmen Valenzuela Rojas; brother, Juan Carlos (Azucena); numerous nieces and nephews from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and California, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and surviving paternal grandfather, Nicolas Rojas from Illinois.
Alejandro Jr. was raised in Greenfield, CA. At age 18 years he moved to Minnesota. He attended Greenfield Elementary School and later he attended school in Minnesota and received his G.E.D.
Alejandro Jr. was a die-hard Raider Fan and was also a Dodger Fan. Jano, as most called him, was a happy person. The battle with acute renal failure and later with cancer did not stop him. He worked hard until he could not anymore. His son Ethan was the love of his life. Jano’s beautiful smiles and friendship will surely be missed by all that knew him. Jano had a heart of gold and he loved all that crossed his path.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 24th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with gathering one hour prior.

Alfred John Bates - August 14, 1929 - March 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: Alfred “Al” Bates passed away on March 16, 2022. Al was born August 14, 1929 on the family farm in Eau Galle WI to the late Harry & Rose (Hartung) Bates. He grew up a farm boy and graduated from Durand HS in 1948. After Graduation Al worked for the Milwaukee Railroad.
On April 26, 1951, Al was inducted into the US Army. He was assigned to the First Calvary Division based in Korea. After his tour, Al attended the U of M graduating in 1958 with a BS degree in electrical engineering. He worked for Honeywell on the Apollo program. After completion of the Apollo program, Al worked for Control Data as a production engineer building computer products.
On July 22, 1954 Al married Mary Lou Germscheid. To this union, 7 children were born. They lived in student housing until they built a home and moved to Columbia Heights where they raised their family.
In 1982, Al started Alternative Homes of Minneapolis Inc. to support persons with substance abuse, livability issues and those alienated from their families. Al later sold the business to his son David.
Al enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He volunteered for AARP and Anoka County filing tax returns and driving to medical appointments for the elderly and under privileged.
Al is preceded in death by his loving partner, Bernice Peterson; his son, DJ; parents; 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
Al is survived by his children: Diane (Jon) Phillips, Cindy (Greg) Doran, Beth (David) Crocker, Michelle McNeil, David Bates, Duane (Ann) Bates, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; sister Virginia Schuh; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior. Burial at Sunset Memorial Park.

Obituary Preview: Roger Collingwood Harmon, age 73 of Minnetonka, formerly of Fridley, passed away unexpectedly on March 15, 2022 doing two things he treasured and loved; spending an evening with his wife Debbie and watching basketball.
Roger was born on August 18, 1948, in St. Paul, Minnesota to H. Weston and Cary Harmon. Roger graduated from Northfield High School in 1966 and graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1970. While at St. Cloud State University, Roger met his future bride, Debbie Fritz, and they were married on June 20,1970. Roger and Debbie spent the next 51 years together in Fridley, Minnesota raising two daughters, Sarah and Kate. Roger’s love of Economics led to his teaching career at Minneapolis and Blaine high schools from 1970-2004 where he impacted the lives of countless students as teacher, coach and friend. He also sold real estate in the Twin Cities area for 30+ years. Recently, Roger and Debbie moved to Zvago at Glen Lake in Minnetonka, Minnesota where they enjoyed retirement surrounded by friends and many games of cards. Roger was blessed with a family of all girls and he adored them. Roger and Deb were inseparable, choosing to do life side by side.  Roger was a loving father to his daughters imparting wisdom and guidance on all of life’s lessons. Most importantly, he was always available for a big hug and a confidence boost when most needed. Roger additionally had three granddaughters (Libby, Emily and Greta) and enough grand puppies to open his own dog sitting business, yes, they were all female too!
Roger aka “Bapa” taught his granddaughters “the claw” and the secret handshake. Bapa never missed a basketball game and cherished his time on the sidelines proudly cheering for his granddaughters. When he wasn’t watching basketball he loved playing golf with the boys, gardening and traveling with Deb. He had a quick wit and a kind smile that made everyone feel important.  In keeping with his giving nature, he was an organ donor.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Wes and Cary Harmon. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his daughters, Sarah (Aaron) Crandall, of Sartell and Kate Saba (Ted Smokstad), of Chaska; grandchildren, Libby Crandall, Emily Crandall and Greta Crandall; sister, Mary (Bruce) Swenson; and Brothers, John (Katharine) Harmon and Mark Harmon.

She is survived by children, Kelli (Joe) Galbraith, Brian (Wendy) Harding; 6 grandchildren: Erin (Nasri) Mansour, Nathan Galbraith, Jana (Jesse) Perron, Theresa (Justin) Close, Neal (Hannah) Harding, and Liana (Luke) Albers; 13 great-grandchildren: Lilly, Frank, Ellis, Edi, Julia, Caroline, Zoe, Iain, Suzanna, Jack, Asa, Elsa, and Lydia; other loving family & friends.
Jan was a strong and self-driven woman who broke all the norms in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. She was a hard worker who consistently worked multiple jobs and worked to further her education. Jan always put others ahead of herself, whether it be family, friends, or through volunteer work. She lived life on her own terms.
Visitation at 10:00 a.m. and Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21st at Miller Funeral Home.
