The Legacy of Reverend Joseph Martin Jr. “For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Joseph Martin Jr. entered this life on November 6, 1948. Who would have known, Joseph (Junior) would grow up to be a faithful servant to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, his church, his community, and to this country. This Bright Star was born in greater New Orleans, Louisiana to Joseph Martin Sr. and Essie Johnson Taylor.
As a youngster, Joseph was resourceful and industrious. He would organize and plan the play day with his siblings and cousins using the scrap metal and materials found in the yard. Joseph was the coordinator and engineer of much of the fun they had as children. When he was not inventing/building he was traveling and singing in the family’s Morning Star Traveler’s Gospel Music Group.
At the tender age of thirteen, the Lord called his mother Essie home. This event revealed a new role for him within the family. He accepted the assignment and became a parental figure for his siblings. His grandmother helped him collect Stamps to purchase a hunting rifle and fishing rod. He used his rifle and rod to provide what he could for the family. He grew vegetables, hunted game, and fished, thus earning him the nickname, “Boone” as a reference to Daniel Boone. Regardless of circumstances, his smile became an enduring trait.
Joseph Martin graduated from John H. Martyn High School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana in 1966 and later earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) in 1971. He later completed a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Planning from the United States Naval War College, Newport Rhode Island in 1996. Reverend Martin was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Louisiana Bible College, Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Joseph Martin married his love, and life partner Iva Lee Love (Faye) in 1969. This union was blessed with four children: Josh, Shawn, Chris, and Joe.
After completing college at SUNO, he entered the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in 1972 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He ascended from junior officer to commanding officer, while traveling the world in his 28 years of service to the country. He earned two Presidential Meritorious Service Medals, and three Presidential Legion of Merit awards in his illustrious Marine Corps career. He was promoted to Colonel in June 1996 and served as the Commanding Officer for the Marine Corps Depot in Barstow, California as his last active-duty role.
Colonel Martin retired from the Marine Corps in September 2000 and a year later initiated his second career as the Senior Marine Instructor of the Alexandria High School (ASH) Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC). Under his leadership, the ASH JROTC drill team won five state championships, including back-to-back all-service armed drill state championships. Colonel Martin helped establish the CyberPatriot program, enriching student engagement in Science and Technology. He retired from the JROTC program in 2023.

Why are obituaries important?

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

Can I include photos in an obituary?
