Jeffrey Lee Powell - August 14, 1954 - May 09, 2024

Departed: 05/09/2024 (Topeka)
Obituary Preview: Jeffrey Lee Powell went home to Jesus on Thursday, May 9, 2024, after suffering an unexpected cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday, May 4. Jeff was beloved by so many. He was characterized by family and friends alike as being a man of humility, kindness, and integrity.
Jeff was born August 14, 1954, in Topeka, Kansas to George Wallace and Sarah Bess Hothan Powell. He graduated from Topeka West High School in 1972 and from Washburn University in 1977 with a BBA in Accounting.
Jeff met the love of his life in high school, Tamara K Weaverling, and they were married on May 31, 1975 at West Side Baptist Church. Jeff served as the CFO of Topeka Savings Association, the CFO of the Mental Health Consortium, and ended his career as the CFO of Meals on Wheels which he felt was a much-needed ministry.
Jeff was saved as a teenager when he heard the gospel with Tammy in her youth group. He was baptized at West Side Baptist Church. He grew to be a leader in his church: treasurer of West Side, an elder at Shawnee Heights Baptist Church, an elder/teacher at Christian Family Fellowship, and the treasurer at Lion & Lamb Church. Jeff grew up playing baseball and was a stellar catcher. As an adult he enjoyed many years playing fast pitch softball with the West Side team.
Jeff designed and built the family’s first home with the help of his grandfather who was a carpenter and his father and brother who were brick masons. He was always improving his home and yard, converting garages and expanding their home as more and more children arrived. Family and home were definitely where his heart was and he desired it to be a haven for all of his children. In fact, the name of their homeschool was Fair Havens Academy.
In 1985, he and Tammy made the decision to home-school their nine children, a journey that spanned over three decades, concluding when their youngest graduated in 2017. Jeff loved babies and was never happier than holding one of his grandkids. After he retired, he decided he wanted to have weekly read-aloud sessions with the grandkids. He introduced all of his children and grandchildren to The Chronicles of Narnia, Pilgrim’s Progress, Hind’s Feet on High Places, Little House on the Prairie, and The Happy Hollisters. One of Jeff’s greatest joys was to treat the family to an annual vacation. It began with trips to Branson and grew to include trips to Copper Mountain, CO, St. George Island, FL,, Gatlinburg,TN, and Myrtle Beach, SC. Eventually he rented a home on St. George Island for a month and the various kids would come with their families for as long as they could. Precious memories!
Jeff faithfully held family devotions called Wisdom Searches every morning before he left for work. His children credit his commitment to this practice in having a profound impact on their spiritual formation. While Jeff was unresponsive in ICU the children held Wisdom Searches with him, reading to him from the Psalms and Proverbs.
Jeff was a faithful father to his children who all will carry on his legacy: Josh (Emily), Jaymie (Casey) Moore, Jenna (Jonathan) Runyan, Joy (Billy) Davenport, Jeriel (Keith) Fine, Joanna (Josh) Powell, Abby (Mike) Peoples, Faith (Dawsyn) Birtell, and Caleb. He relished his role as grandfather to 23 grandchildren: Halleigh, Hayden, & Hunter Powell; Clara, Jackson, & Miriam Moore; Emma, Thomas, Luke, Simon, & Judah Runyan; Liam, Colton, Marshall, Sawyer, & Grayson Davenport; Charley, Paisley, & Wesley Fine; Ellie, Ivy, & Gideon Powell; and Milo Peoples.
Jeff is survived by his siblings Kathy Andler, Keith (Dianne) Powell, Mike (Karon) Powell, Ruby (Rod) Bunde, as well as his father-in-law Darrell Weaverling, brother-in-law Kurt (Melissa) Weaverling, and sister-in-law Amy (Mike) Swickard. He also leaves an aunt, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved.
Jeff was preceded to glory by his parents, George & Sally Powell, mother-in-law Shirley Weaverling, brother-in-law Greg Andler, nephew Noah Keith Swickard, and niece Amanda Weaverling Olinger.
A Celebration of Jeff’s life will be held at Topeka Baptist Church, 4500 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 2:00 pm.
Gifts in memory of Jeff may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N Kansas Ave, Topeka, KS 66608.

Dakota Warren - April 10, 2003 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Topeka)
Obituary Preview: Dakota William Warren, known affectionately to all as Dakota, embarked on his final adventure on April 28, 2024. Born on April 10, 2003, in the small town of Ulysses, KS, he was a bright spark in the lives of his parents, Dan and Kelley Warren. He has a birth mother, Audrey Mangels. Dakota's laughter and creativity were a beacon of joy to his sisters, Brianna and Amber Warren, and his half-sister, Serriana Schuldt. His paternal grandparents, Timothy and Kelly Warren, along with his maternal grandma, Donna Winright, and a host of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins, will fondly remember his unique spirit.
Dakota was a proud 2022 graduate of Seaman High School, where he was known for cracking jokes that could make even the sternest teacher crack a smile. His quest for knowledge took him to Washburn Tech, where he honed his skills in Machine Technology, also in 2022. He was not just a certified machinist; he was a certified bringer of laughs to all his colleagues at Hallmark.
In the world of interests, Dakota was a renaissance man of the digital age. His passion for music had him dancing to beats that only he could hear, while his love for video games had him battling dragons and saving virtual worlds with the same enthusiasm he tackled life. Anime wasn't just a hobby for Dakota; it was a doorway to worlds of endless possibility, where his creativity could roam free without the pesky laws of physics getting in the way.
Woodworking was another of Dakota's talents, and he could often be found in a sawdust-covered shirt, sculpting his latest masterpiece with the precision of a surgeon and the eye of an artist. Friends were the cornerstone of Dakota's life; he was the mastermind behind countless escapades that will now pass into legend.
Describing Dakota is a task that would leave even the most skilled wordsmith searching for the right adjectives. Funny? Absolutely. Interesting? Without a doubt. Creative? As creative as a comedian with a blank canvas. He had the kind of humor that could light up a room and the kind of interesting tales that made you wonder if he had lived several lifetimes.
Dakota's departure from Topeka, KS, where he spent his final moments, is not the end of his story. It's the beginning of a legacy of laughter, a collection of memories that will keep his spirit alive in the hearts of all who knew him. Dakota's life was a series of well-crafted jokes, and while the punchline may have come too soon, the echoes of his laughter will resonate forever.

Sandra Lee “Sandy” Bohnsack - March 24, 1937 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Topeka)
Obituary Preview: Sandra Lee “Sandy” Bohnsack, a shining example of humor and heart, left us with a legacy of love and laughter on April 25, 2024. Sandy’s life was a vibrant journey that started in Topeka, where she spent 86 years of her life and concluded in the loving community of Alma, KS, where she was surrounded by family and loved by the amazing staff at The Heritage Home, the place she had called home for the last four months. Sandy was the first resident of The Heritage Home.
Sandy’s story is one of joy and zest; it started on March 24, 1937, in Topeka, KS, when she was born to parents Warren and Clara (Johnson) Lewis. Sandy was raised with three brothers: Mel Lewis, Allen K, and the late Rev. Richard Lewis. Her early years set the stage for a life filled with playful competition and spirited adventure. A proud Topeka High Trojan, Sandy’s athleticism shone brightly as she started playing traveling softball at the age of 12, hitching rides with her coach because her parents did not have a car. She was well known for playing on various teams, including Ohse Meats and Ed Marling, Topeka’s premier amateur women’s softball teams. She graduated from Topeka High in 1955 and continued her education at Washburn University, where she studied physical education.
Although Sandy’s first love in life was probably softball, she would expand her heart after she met her husband; at a softball game of course. She was introduced by one of her teammates, to Wallace Edward “Wally” “Eddie” Bohnsack. They were married on June 7, 1958, and had two children together: a daughter, Sheryl, and a son, Brian. Sandy was a stay-at-home mom while raising her children. She was very involved in her children’s lives; volunteering with Brownies, Boy Scouts, school field trips, and supporting them in any way that she could. She later worked as a Hallmark Card merchandiser, which seemed very appropriate since she thought it was very important to send cards to people, especially for their birthday.
What Sandy will most be remembered for was her sense of humor. Everyone who knew her could tell you something humorous she had said or done.
Sandy lost her beloved husband in 1992 due to ongoing health challenges. After his death, and with her children raised, Sandy started volunteering for several environmental groups, including the Nature Conservancy and the Audubon Society. Sandy had a love of birds and birdwatching, and soon developed a love for traveling, when she joined a group that traveled all over the country looking for and observing birds and other wildlife. Her love of birds was passed on to her family, especially her great-granddaughters, who would often call “GiGi” to tell her about a bird they had seen. Anyone that ever-met Sandy will forever remember her love of birds and will think of her when they see them. Most people also knew that she despised squirrels because they would get on her bird feeds. She had a pretty good aim when she stuck her pink BB gun out her back door, “pinging” them to scare them off.
Sandy’s love of sports stayed with her throughout her entire life. She could be found at a ballfield or court, supporting her grandchildren and great-granddaughters. Her love of sports also took her to the Kansas Senior Olympics multiple times, where she competed in pickleball, ping pong, shuffleboard, and bocce ball. Her love of bocce ball was shared with athletes participating in Boccia USA (wheelchair bocce), where she volunteered for many years.
Sandy was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She leaves behind a legacy of memories in her children Sheryl (Ron) Thowe of Alma, KS, and Brian (Patty) Bohnsack of Wichita, KS, her grandchildren Trina (Kevin) Kohake, Christa (Brian) Johnson, Brandon (Kellie) Bohnsack, Emily Bohnsack, Tyler Bohnsack, bonus grandchildren Michaela, Emily (Eric Baldwin), and Jackson Stevens, brothers Mel Lewis and Allen K (Delores) Lewis, and sister-in-law Cheryl Lewis. The title that Sandy cherished most was “GiGi”, as she was affectionately called by her five great-granddaughters Taegan, Kinley, and Shiloh Johnson, and Kaylin and Hailey Kohake.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Rev. Richard Lewis and sister-in-law Carol Lewis.
A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Sandy, on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 2:00 in Alma, KS, at the Heritage Home.

Sally's spirit of kinship extended to her sister, Sandra K. Warren, and brother-in-law, Clay C. Warren, of Manhattan, Kansas, as well as her nephews, Andrew R. In 2012, Sally made the heartfelt decision to relocate to Topeka, Kansas, to be closer to her sister, Sandra, and to immerse herself in the community she quickly grew to love. She spent the final years of her working life at HyVee where she is very fondly remembered by her coworkers.
Those who knew Sally will remember her as the life of the party, a woman whose humor and friendliness were as infectious as her spirited nature. Sally's interests were as diverse as her personality; she was an ardent animal lover, particularly devoted to her two cats, her "Chickens," who were the recipients of her endless affection and care.
Sally's love for animals extended beyond her own pets and she held a part time position at PetSmart which allowed her to help other pet owners.
Sally's legacy is one that will be fondly remembered and cherished by her family and friends. As we bid farewell to Sally Ann Corrier, we celebrate a life lived with zest, a heart given freely to others, and a soul that will continue to inspire laughter and kindness in the memories she leaves behind.
Though she has left this earthly realm, her spirit endures in the stories shared, the smiles she brought forth, and the indelible mark she made on the lives of those she touched.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who was a part of Sally's life. Her memory will be treasured, and her presence forever missed.
There will be a memorial to celebrate Sally’s life at a future date.

Born on July 19, 1946, in Nashville, Kansas, to Clem and Bernadine (Govert) Werner, Darlene lived a vibrant life characterized by kindness, generosity, and dedication to her community.
Darlene’s early years began on a farm in Zenda, Kansas. Her family’s active involvement in their farming community, including 4-H and church, created a strong foundation for prioritizing community engagement and philanthropy. As a student at Wichita State University, Darlene met Phil Elwood and they were married in June 1968. From Wichita they moved to Topeka where their daughter Denise was born. Phil and Darlene built a family centered on love, respect, and joy. Their enduring partnership of nearly 56 years was a testament to their deep affection and lasting commitment.
