Dolores Sapienza - August 07, 1933 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Dolores Fenix Sapienza, of Millsboro, DE, died on May 13, 2024 at age 90. Dolores, “Doe” was born in Shamokin, PA, a small coal-mining town. She lived with her parents, Anna Stellmach and Jack Fenix; brother Gilbert Fenix; and “Beauty,” a fox terrier pup who mimicked Jack smoking a pipe.
Dolores, aka “Chuppie,” attended first grade in a one room school house, in Elysburg, PA. Her high school years were spent at Shamokin High School, where she was Editor of the school newspaper, The Hi-Lighter.
Upon high school graduation, Dolores told her father of her aspiration to become a lawyer. His response, “Girls aren’t lawyers.” On that note, she enrolled in Syracuse University to study journalism where she joined Zeta Tau Alpha, and served as treasurer.
In addition to a BA in Journalism, Dolores earned a Master’s degree in Community Education from Indiana University of PA. She wrote her Doctoral dissertation at Virginia Tech on young widows through survey research. Dolores herself was widowed at age forty-eight after twenty-three years of marriage.
Her first professional job was at the Lancaster New Era, as Manager of Correspondents. It was here that she met Jerry Sapienza, a prize-winning reporter. After falling in love and a proposal involving a diamond ring in a macaroni box, they married in 1958, and raised four children – Lisa, Lynne, Leslie Ann and John.
Dolores valued community involvement. She was active in the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, the Dover Newcomer’s Club and the League of American PEN Women, Inc. When she returned to her career, she was hired by Delaware Tech as Program Developer. Later she was hired as the Director of Continuing Education at Delaware State College, retiring in 1993 after 25 years. Her proudest moment at Del State was hearing the General Assembly change the title of “College” to “University.”
Her passions included: traveling, collecting antiques, cooking, canning, watching football (even reruns during the Pandemic) and dogs. As for her love of collecting antiques, at one time, 34 old clocks were ticking away in the Sapienza home. (Her husband, Jerry, took credit for the time-keeping.) Her travels carried her to: Turkey, Israel, West Africa (Senegal), Panama, Aucwitz, Italy (The Vatican), Mexico and Collesano (the Sapienza family’s hometown). In later years, Dolores also traveled to Poland and the Czech Republic through People to People International, an organization formed by President Eisenhower to foster good will among nations. Dolores helped start PTPI’s New Castle County chapter.
While in semi-retirement, Dolores’ passion for cooking and canning were put to good use when she opened the “Old Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast” in Dewey Beach. She enjoyed being an innkeeper for eight years. Her final home was in Millsboro where she lived until her passing.
Even though her accomplishments were remarkable, at the end of the day, she was one-of-a-kind, a force to be reckoned with and our beloved Mom.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her parents; brother, Gilbert; and her son-in-law, Bob Sadusky.
Dolores is survived by her four children, Lisa Boyles; Lynne Sadusky; Leslie Sapienza (Frank); John Sapienza, and her fourth daughter by marriage, John’s wife, Linda Sapienza. Cherished grandchildren, Johnny Sapienza; Sarah Sapienza Silva (Jesse); Robert Sadusky, Jr. (Katherine); Julia Sadusky; Zach Sadusky (Stephanie); Maria Sadusky; Therese Lawrence (Ollie); Luke Sadusky; Matthew Sadusky; Marinah Morgan Carver; Elainah Boyles (Kris); and Susannah Boyles. Great-grandchildren, Mason; Cameron; Noah; Gabe; Adrian; Angelo; Clara; Lillian and Stella; Judah; dear cousin Joan Brown; sister-in-law Gloria Vendryes; a host of precious nieces and nephews; and her very devoted caregiver and partner-in-crime, Towanda Thomas.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Michael Ambruso Funeral Home, where friends may call on Tuesday, May 21 from 11:00 – 12:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 PM at The Church of the Holy Cross, Dover, DE. Internment will be at Sharon Hill Memorial Park.

Matthew Paul Kropiewnicki - April 11, 1957 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Matthew P. Kropiewnicki Jr. passed away on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his life, Matthew achieved tremendous professional success in the world of computer science, with over 43 years of Information Technology (IT) and Database Administration (DBA) experience. However, he is best remembered for being a sincere, loyal and generous son, brother, uncle, friend and co-worker.
As the oldest child of an extremely close military family, from an early age, “Matty” was the rock that all of his siblings could always count on. He was also required to grow up extremely fast, so that he could help out on the home front while his father was away flying for the U. S. Air Force. During these times, Matty helped his mother around the house and, prior to modern communications, he would play chess by mail with his father. Born in Greenville, SC, Matthew’s family moved to Savannah, GA and ultimately landed in Dover, DE. These early years required him to attend several schools across the country. Once in Dover, though, Matthew attended Holy Cross Elementary School, and proceeded to graduate in 1975 from Caesar Rodney High School.
Upon graduation from high school, Matthew attended the University of Delaware. Studying Computer Science, Matthew was an early learner of this new and expanding technology. While at U of D, “Krop” became a member of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity (DU). Here, Krop went from having just two sibling brothers to an entire brotherhood. These brothers of DU were high achieving students that also knew how to host great events. From the sand filled basement beach party and the community volunteerism in his college days, to the more recent yearly Homecoming tailgates, Matt made memories and friendships that he valued his entire life.
Having obtained his Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware, Matthew embarked on an accomplished career. He began IT work at the State of Delaware, rising from a Programmer Analyst to an Application Support Specialist 3 in a short amount of time. Matthew then transitioned to the private sector, working as a Lead Database Administrator in Sales Force Automation for both Sales Technologies a Company of the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation and, subsequently, Fastech Integrated Solutions. Having significant experience in Oracle, Matthew brought these skills to W. L. Gore & Associates by installing and maintaining FDA validated J. D. Edwards ERP systems. Finally, he returned to the public sector by working as a civilian DBA for the United States Army CECOM Software Engineering Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. This last prestigious position was the culmination of an IT career that spanned paper card programming in college, to mastery of complex database products such as Natural, Adabas, SQL Server, and Oracle.
Everywhere Matthew worked, though, he made it easy for someone to make a lifelong friend. He was extremely well read and, coupled with his keen intellect and varied interests in vintage cars, old cameras, classic movies, geography, English darts, Trivial Pursuit and the TV show Jeopardy!, he made a great guest at any party! He enjoyed spending time with friends and co-workers and would often organize yearly Brandywine River tubing events. Matthew started his love of cars when he maintained and rebuilt the engine on his first car, a 1959 Plymouth Belvedere. He later enjoyed working on vehicles like his 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula, 1988 Jeep Comanche pick-up truck and his 1965 Sunbeam Alpine. More importantly, in addition to these varied interests, Matthew’s willingness to give anyone the shirt off of his back was perhaps his best attribute. He was a very giving person of not just his time, on matters like technology support for family and friends, but also in his thoughtful presents to his family members. He usually ended up with “Gift Thunder” more times than not! Matthew greatly enjoyed spending quality time with his immediate family. From trips to Knoebels Amusement Resort and Air Force football games, to playing card games like poker and "31" or playing classic board games like Scrabble and Risk, Matthew could frequently be found having fun with his parents, brothers, sisters, their spouses, and his niece and nephew.
