Hazel Mae Turner - January 12, 1940 - May 19, 2024

Departed: 05/19/2024 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Hazel Mae Chambers was born on January 12, 1940, in Davy, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Hoyt Chambers and Thelma (Curry) Chambers. At a young age, she moved to Michigan where she was educated through Monroe Public Schools.
Red-Headed, “Firecracker”, Hazel Mae Chambers married James Carl “J.C.” Turner on August 25, 1968, in Toledo, Ohio. The couple had a blended family of his, hers, and theirs. They had a special relationship with many of the same interests, from camping to attending Bluegrass festivals. A self-proclaimed "Ornery Old Cuss", Hazel often spoke about what a good man J.C. was to anyone willing to listen.
Hazel was a homemaker but stayed active in the community volunteering at the Thrift Shop of Monroe, which gave her a sense of community and a chance to explore new treasures before anyone else. She was also a member of the Kentuckians of Michigan and a local bluegrass music club. She attended Kentuckians where she loved to dance and the annual Milan Bluegrass Festival at the KC Campground. She and J.C. even made a trip to Nashville for the Bluegrass Association Award Ceremony. Her love for flea markets in Corbin, Kentucky, and her collection of colorful tennis shoes reflected her vibrant spirit and unique style.
Being the daughter of a coal miner, Hazel took on many of her father’s traits, of resiliency and determination. Through many illnesses she earned a reputation of having multiple lives like a cat. She made her home on Union Street for many years, and she was a constant fixture to motorists as she sat on her front porch waving to passersby. Her home was always open for conversation or a little gossip. While she may not have been a gourmet cook, her potato salad and banana pudding were legendary, and she took great pride in sharing these dishes with family and friends.

Vivian caught the eye of a young man, Robert Schwartz at the Mad Hatter in Downtown Monroe. Once he finally gained the confidence to ask her, “do you want to boogie” the rest is as they say history. The couple was joined in holy matrimony on October 18, 1974, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monroe. Their union was further blessed with the birth of three children.
Vivian spent several fruitful years serving in clerical roles, at various offices such as People's Federal and Monroe Bank and Trust and Fermi. Her culinary skills in the kitchen were unparalleled, and she firmly believed that food was a gateway to the hearts of her family and friends. Her cooking was not just a meal but an expression of love and care. Vivian soon learned the joy of grandchildren, cherishing the time she shared with them. They regularly had lunch dates and shared the annual tradition of enjoying the Nutcracker at the River Raisin Center for the Arts (RRCA). She was also a talented writer and used that talent to create special messages in cards she sent for special occasions. For many years, Vivian anxiously looked forward to Sunday afternoon visits with her Italian cousins North of Detroit, Wyandotte, and Canada.
Vivian enjoyed traveling with Bob, with visits to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, Shipshewana, Hollywood Beach, Florida, and to the West Coast to visit her daughter, Amy and grandsons in California. During these visits, she explored remarkable sites such as Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, the Central Coast, Napa Valley, local wineries, and the Pacific Ocean.

Vernon Wade Taylor - July 14, 1979 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Vernon Wade Taylor was born on July 14, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois to Debra Taylor and Vernon Easley. As a young boy, he moved with his mother to Monroe, Michigan where he attended Lincoln Elementary at Monroe Public Schools. Throughout his life, he returned to the “Windy City” many times to visit family. From a very early age, Vernon earned the nickname of “Pudge”, as he was a chubby little baby. His eccentric personality earned him many other nicknames over the years.
A proud father to his daughter, Mariah, Vernon was blessed with a second baby girl, Alexa, with his longtime girlfriend, Theresa. He later welcomed two grandsons into his life. Vernon absolutely adored the boys, who affectionately referred to him as “Papa Vern”.
Pudge considered himself the “Grill Master”. Although he tended to overcook the meat by some standards, he always insisted on manning the grill without anyone’s assistance. Pudge was sure to have the volume of his speakers to the max while cruising around listening to music.
Proud of his roots in “Chi-town”, Vernon cheered on the Chicago Bears football team. Vernon enjoyed watching action television and movies, naturally including all the “Chicago” series. Extremely outgoing, Pudge loved to talk and crack jokes, which earned him many friends. He was famous for his random catch phrases. Pudge was a selfless friend and family member who was known for being dependable and guaranteed to bring a good time.

Karol Ilene Cobb - June 20, 1938 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Karol Ilene Cobb, age 85, of Erie, Michigan passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born June 20, 1938 in Charleston Township, Illinois to George and Gladys Rae (Whiles) Nees. She attended Whitmer High School and married J.B. Cobb on January 22, 1955 in Sylvania, Ohio.
She held many titles throughout her life, whether it be “Mom”, “Momma”, “Mother”, “Grandmother”, “Mimi” or “Betty”. Although being a homemaker and caring for the needs of her husband and children was her main source of purpose, she also spent twenty years as a Unit Clerk at Toledo Hospital. In her position at the hospital, God repeatedly used her to care for others, from the janitorial staff to the patients; Karol made it her ministry to share God’s word with people she met whenever she had the opportunity.
To Karol all people mattered, and she wholeheartedly believed that anybody could accomplish anything if they were willing to invest the time and effort. Karol was always kind, encouraging and spunky. At home, she taught respect of God’s word and following the rules. She believed in continual improvement, even in her last illness as she was still caring and praying for people and sharing advice.
A staunch Democrat, she was patriotic and proudly flew her American Flag every day, “unless it was too windy”. Her walk with Christ began as a teenager at the Whitney Hills Church of Christ in Toledo and continued throughout her lifetime as a faithful member at Flanders Road Church of Christ, Toledo. She believed in the power of forgiveness and reconciliation, never writing anyone off. She often stated, “If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything”.
Karol was a hard worker and used her time wisely. She loved to clean and keep her home tidy. She was known to be consistent and constant in everything she did. No one ever had to guess where she was coming from or what she meant. When she did take the time to “relax”, she loved to read her Bible, cheer on the University of Michigan in all sports with her husband and kids, go camping with her family, plant flowers and play board games, especially her favorite board game “Sorry!”. She was a fierce competitor and never let anyone win, no matter what.
To cherish her memory, she leaves four devoted children, Vicki Lynn Cobb-Boes (Mark Boes), Joyce (Kent) Rethlake, Timothy (Gwynne) Cobb and Jeffrey Cobb (Brooke Lauber-Cobb). Karol is also survived by one sister, Ina Rae (Gerald) Drake; one brother, Ted (Antoinette) Rennels; sister-in-law, Dolly Fortner; brother-in-law, Tony Adams; seven grandchildren: Heather, Joshua, Jared, Jeremiah, Jessica (Matt), Jana (Aaron), and Andrew; eleven great grandchildren: Jayden, Levi, Maverick, Braeden, Benjamin, Matilyn, Kinsley, Claire, Logan, Liam, and Tenley; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her identical twin sister, Karen Nees-Adams and several other family members. Karol faithfully cared for her husband, J.B Cobb until his recent passing on October 17, 2023.
Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 8:00pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe,14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070. A Celebration of Karol’s Life will take place at 1:00pm on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, also at the funeral home with her son, Jeff Cobb officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial.
Memorials in her honor are suggested to Thayer Salisbury Mission work in Africa through Flanders Road Church of Christ. Online guests may leave words of inspiration and comfort or share a photo by visiting www.merklefs.com.

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Constance Marie Hites was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 14, 1947. She was one of four children born from the union of Robert Hites and Vera (Moore) Hites. She was a 1965 graduate of Maumee High School.
Connie did many things to help make ends meet from working as a dispatcher for a freight company to driving a school bus for Blissfield Schools. She even sold Avon, although it was more so she could enjoy the discounts.
First and foremost, Connie was a homemaker. She provided a wonderful and safe home for her son: Chad. She was also his biggest fan and supporter. She used her position as a bus driver as an opportunity to travel to all of Chad’s away football games and wrestling meets and get paid to be a spectator.
She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and NASCAR racing with Dale Jarrett being her favorite driver. When her health was good, she made the most of being outside and was an expert gardener. She looked forward to canning beans and strawberries and making homemade apple sauce. Chad was all too happy to help as well. As her health declined, she challenged her mind and filled much of her free time playing online games.
Connie counted being a mother as one of her greatest accomplishments in life. The joy that she had from raising a son was only overshadowed when she became a Nana, oh how she loved her granddaughter.
Constance Marie “Connie” Hites, age 76 of Erie passed away at her home unexpectedly on Sunday; February 18, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her parents and a beloved four-legged companion: Sophie, a wired-hair Jack Russell Terrier.
