John Lawrence Ellis - January 14, 1935 - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (Newcastle)
Obituary Preview: John Lawrence Ellis, age 87 passed away Friday, Apr 22, 2022, at Weston County Manor.
John was born in 1935 to Lawrence and Anna (Schmitt) Ellis in Upton Wyoming.  After a short stint in Pocatello, Idaho the family returned and made their home in Newcastle.  John attended and graduated from Newcastle High School. John’s high school career included playing running back for the Newcastle Dogies and ranking fourth in the state for wrestling.  A very swift runner, he would take bets on his sprinting abilities.  He wasn’t quite fast enough to outrun Genevieve Ann Pziniski. In 1954, they were married at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. John and Gen were blessed with two sons, John Stanley in 1955, and Craig Lawrence in 1961.
John served his country in the National Guard for more than eight years and supported his family through his work with the Wyoming State Transportation Department. During his forty years with the Transportation Department, John operated heavy equipment and drove the snowplow. The winter months were especially exhausting. John worked tirelessly at keeping the roads clear and safe, often putting in many hours of overtime, and missing out on family activities.
In 1974, John and his son formed J and J Construction and began building Midwestern Homes. This included an extensive rejuvenation of an entire block of Walden Avenue in Newcastle.  This neighborhood dated back to the 1890’s and included outhouses and horse corrals as well as nearly 100 years of accumulated rubble. The family cleaned up the area and replaced it with new homes, essentially creating their own neighborhood.  In total J and J construction built more than 23 homes in the Newcastle area.  An active real estate developer, John owned and maintained two mobile home courts as well as multiple rental properties.
John worked hard his entire life. In 1988, John assisted his son, John Stanley, with the opening of the Weston County True Value Home Center.  After putting in a full day's work at the Transportation Department, John would report to True Value for an additional two hours helping his son close the store each day.  On Saturday’s John worked at the True Value from opening to closing making a fifty-four-hour work week.  When he retired from the Transportation Department, he continued to work six days per week at True Value.  Even with this grueling schedule, he still found time to take care of his own home and yard as well as spend time with family.
An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his sons and grandchildren.  In his retirement, John and Gen were able to travel throughout the country, including a three-week trip with Craig’s family to the Canadian Rockies, trips to Branson and California with Gen’s siblings, multiple trips to the True Value Market in various locations in the U.S., and several cruises.
John was preceded in death by his parents of Newcastle; sister Ruth Ann Ray and her husband Dean Ray of Casper; and brothers-in-law Eddie Linke, Wayne Burr and Stanley Pzinski.  He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Genevieve; sons and their wives, John (Janelle), Craig (Renel); grandchildren Jessica, Jordan (Kelsey), Cameron (Megan), Avery; great-grandchildren Waylon, Bristol, and Bennett; and sister Mary Lou Burr of Custer, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Apr 27, 2022at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Newcastle, with Father Brian Hess officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Meridian Mortuary, 111 S. Railroad Ave., Newcastle, WY, 82701 or expressions of sympathy may also be made online at www.meridianmortuary.com.

Obituary Preview: Henry Curtis Vickers, 97, died March 27th at his home in Newcastle. He was born June 2, 1924 at home on the family farm near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He attended schools in Frazee, Minnesota where he majored in football, according to his memories. During school and after, he worked on the family farm near Frazee.
In 1944 Hank enlisted in the Navy. He worked stateside, crossing the continental U.S. five times before being assigned to the USS Witek, a Gearing-class destroyer. He learned to fly during his time in the service, his first career choice. After his discharge he continued to take flying lessons and work in airports. However, he was denied a commercial license due to his eyesight and had to move on to other career choices.
Hank worked in North Dakota for several years, then moved to the Newcastle area in 1950. He drove a fuel liner to the airbase near Rapid City for several years, then the Coop bulk truck for four years. He enjoyed getting acquainted with people on his route and made a number of life-long friends. He started with Plains Pipelines in 1960 and worked there until his retirement in 1990.
In 1951 he married Carol Moore and they made their home in Newcastle. In 1952 he bought the land and started working on the home where he has lived since, almost 70 years. Connie, Wayne and  Gale were born over the next four years.
In 1976, he married loving wife, Alice Nickolaisen Cox and welcomed her son, Earl, 10 years old, into their lives. Hank and Alice would have had their 46th wedding anniversary in June.
Hank was driven to build and repair mechanical things. He built several small tractors, a dune buggy, half a dozen homebuilt airplanes and ultralights. He could - and did repair anything that had or needed a motor.
After his retirement, he took an interest in tractor pulls, and rebuilt a John Deere to compete in the local pulls, starting with Sturgis in ’03. He and Bob King excelled and both earned a number of trophies. Hank flew his homebuilt planes until his late 80s. After that he gave more attention to his garden, a real project.

Doris "Dode" Voss - January 27, 1922 - January 31, 2022

Departed: 01/31/2022 (Newcastle)
Obituary Preview: Doris “Dode”Constance (Molstad) Voss who lived a gentle, loving, and thoughtful life always caring for others, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2022, at Weston Manor in Newcastle.
Dode experienced 100 years of everything life had to offer. She was born January 27, 1922, in Sioux City, Iowa, the fourth daughter of five children to parents Ella Marie (Ellefson) Molstad and George Melvin Molstad. In 1924 at the age of two years she survived a dangerous case of pneumonia.  She grew up in South Sioux City, Nebraska. She enjoyed her childhood playing with neighborhood kids walking to school and to the corner store for candy. She fondly remembered lighting real candles on their Christmas tree only once and only for a few minutes during each Christmas eve. She graduated from high school in 1939 and worked until her marriage to her high school sweetheart Warren G. Voss on December 21, 1940. Their adventure began with a move to San Diego, California. She loved the ocean, beaches, and warm weather. Their lives quickly turned to the WWII effort with Warren being drafted and Dode employed in an aircraft factory building planes. She really was a “Rosie the Riveter.”
In 1944 they moved home to South Sioux City, Nebraska. They both worked in the Voss family business at Crystal Lake Resort on the Missouri River. Three children were born to the couple and in 1953 the family moved to Newcastle, Wyoming, where Warren’s father Dale was engaged in the oil business. Dode joined the Newcomers’ Club of Newcastle with many other young women new to the oil boom town. She made many lifelong friends. Through the years she was very active in the Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday School and organizing rummage sales, bake sales, and helping with many church projects.  She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for many years helping her two boys advance in scouting. She was a fifty-year member of the PEO Sisterhood. She belonged to two bridge clubs, a couples’ supper club and she was an original member of the Country Club’s Ladies Auxiliary. She supported the historical society and foundation. She was an active member of the Twentieth and Twenty First Century Clubs and she particularly enjoyed supporting the Weston County Library during book sales, Christmas decorating, and special projects. She volunteered her time and energy to local projects and causes to help others. Her kindness and consideration of others set an example for us all.  She was always reading and found interest in many subjects. Her home was full of books, magazines, and educational series covering what was up to date and what was historical. She played the piano for enjoyment and taught herself to play the organ. She enjoyed writing poetry. She was devoted to her family and was the calm peacemaker. She wanted everyone to be happy and did what she could to make it so.
Dode loved her garden and flowers and grew many interesting outdoor and indoor plants including a 70-year-old Christmas Cactus that still blooms right on schedule.
She was a gracious hostess, and her home was a gathering place. She entertained family and friends with summer cookouts, garden, and pool parties. In later years she loved to have visitors and sit outside on her veranda, sipping tea, talking, and watching the clouds and jet streams come and go in the Wyoming sky. She loved being alive and made an effort to “keep on the sunny side.” She enjoyed having a good time and she leaves a legacy of love and friendship.
Dode and Warren were married 66 years.  During later years they enjoyed being members of a travel club and joined many trips to warm climates. Warren preceded her in death in 2006.  She will be laid to rest beside him in the Newcastle Greenwood Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents George M. Molstad and Ella Marie (Ellefson)Molstad, sisters Viola(Charles) Tarlton, Grace(Forrest) James, and one sister who died in infancy, and her brother George(Elaine) Molstad.

Elizabeth Flora Cummings - February 28, 1920 - January 31, 2022

Departed: 01/31/2022 (Newcastle)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Flora Cummings (Toth) was born on the prairie north of Newcastle to Rose and John Toth on February 28, 1920. She was 101 when she passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Weston County Manor. Elizabeth was a resident of Newcastle, Wyoming.
When Elizabeth was six years old, the family moved to town. Her father worked in the coal mines of Cambria.  She loved growing up in town and was a regular at the movies; they were silent at the time and accompanied by a piano player.  She was a member of the high school basketball team and told us, “It was considered too strenuous for girls, so we could only play half-court.” Elizabeth became a member of the First United Methodist Church when she was fourteen years old.  She graduated from Newcastle High School in 1938.
Elizabeth Flora married John William Cummings on September 1, 1941, at the First United Methodist Church. To this union were born three children: Beth Ann on February 13, 1947, Michael Joseph on March 6, 1948, and Craig Louis on June 10, 1957.  They moved to their ranch 30 miles southwest of Newcastle in 1957. There they raised their children and ranched for over thirty years.  They moved north of Newcastle in 1980.
Elizabeth was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, V.F.W. Auxiliary, First United Methodist Church, Progressive Anns Extension Club, and the Busy Beavers.  One of Elizabeth's favorite things to do was travel. She visited forty-two states, traveled through Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands.  From a young age, she saved letters, cards, and all momentos.  She was an avid stamp collector, bookworm, and prompt letter sender. It was guaranteed when we checked our mail, it would contain a note or card from Grandma. Elizabeth had a loving family, full of nieces, nephews, and children both grand and great who loved her dearly.  She will be missed by them all.
Elizabeth was reunited in heaven with her husband Bill, daughter Beth Ann, son Michael, parents John and Rose, and her ten brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Craig (Tracie) Cummings; son-in-law Dick Crawford; grandchildren, Shane (Brenna) Crawford, Lance (Nora) Crawford, Travis (Marcie) Crawford, Cammy (Nick) Johnson, Mike (Mary) Cummings, Ty (Hannah) Cummings, and Colton (Jessica) Cummings; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle.  Memorials and condolences may be sent to the family in care of Meridian Mortuary, 111 S. Robert Miller - January 07, 1966 - January 11, 2022

Departed: 01/11/2022 (Newcastle)
Obituary Preview: Robert Emil Miller, 56, passed away on January 11, 2022, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY. He was born in Edgemont, SD, on January 7, 1966, to Benny Rue and Gloria Jean (Nicolls) Miller. He grew up on the family ranch in Minnekahta Valley and attended grade school in Edgemont, SD, and briefly in Wilsall, MT.
He began high school in Edgemont and later graduated from Newcastle High School in 1984. After graduating high school, he earned a degree in diesel mechanics from Wyo Tech Inst. in Laramie, Wyo.
After he earned his degree, Robert returned to Newcastle to work for Skinner Oil & Gas, Roger Anderson / Bill Summers Ford, and Osage Hot Oil. In addition, he worked various other jobs like logging and transport for Mark and JoAnn Boggs and driving crude trucks for Texaco Trading and Transportation. Robert was a proud member of the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Dept and a dragline operator for Black Thunder Coal Mine until his death.
On October 21, 1995, he married his love, Micole Fisher. They made their home in Newcastle, Wyoming, and on May 19, 1997, were blessed with their son, Gatlin Blake Miller, of whom they are very proud.
Having grown up on a ranch, Robert was no stranger to hard work. He loved to find things that others had discarded to create something new. If something could be fixed, Robert would find a way to fix it. He also enjoyed going to auctions, tractor pulling, fishing, snowmobiling, cutting and bailing hay, gardening, restoring John Deere tractors, and working on other special projects around the shop. Most notably, Robert and Gatlin built a John Deere Rat Rod from various tractor parts that they collected over time. And, without question, was an avid loyalist to his brand, Chevrolet.
Robert had numerous interests and skillfully mastered each one to an expert level. In every instance, Robert was generous with his time and talent, no matter who was in need. He was always willing to drop everything to lend a hand to anyone, anywhere. Robert was a one-of-a-kind, genuine person who impacted many people's lives in his unique way. He parted from us entirely too soon, but left a legacy on the world making it a better place for having lived in it.

Departed: 12/20/2021 (Newcastle)
Obituary Preview: Another Cowboy rides away.  Jack Grieves rode into eternity on December 20, 2021. He will join Joanne, a celebration to be sure. He missed her cooking and her companionship.
Jack was born April 21, 1932, to James (Kits) and Madeline Grieves, in Newcastle, WY. He was raised on the family ranch and was joined by a brother, Tom Grieves, in 1946. Jack married Joanne Dee Shrull in Newcastle, December 5, 1955. He had originally asked her identical twin, Jeanne, out on a date. The twins loved to substitute for each other and mix things up. Jack and Joanne raised their two sons, JD and Chuck in true western fashion. The Grieves Ranch was a true love endeavor. Hard work, long hours, and Jack’s tenacious talent made for a successful ranch operation.
Fun was not in short supply on the ranch. Many roping clinics and 4H activities were enjoyed. The bunkhouse was always full of extras who raved about Joanne’s cooking and hospitality.
Jack’s teaching ability helped many horseman. He had the uncanny ability to break down an event and put it in simple terms. Jack was a phenomenal horseman, and cattleman. He was true cowboy to the core. If it didn’t involve a horse or a cow Jack showed little interest. He loved the gossip and was forever on the phone.

This didn’t pan out and Bob went back to running his own company, Bob’s Patrol Service until 1983 when he went to work for Weston County Road and Bridge as their road foreman, retiring in 1996. They then moved to their land at 134 Old HWY 85 South of Newcastle in 1984 after a heart surgery in St. Louis, MO., for Wolff, Parkinson, White.  Only one doctor in the US did Wolf White surgery at that time.  He enjoyed living in the country again and doing yard work. He spent hours hauling rocks and working in the yard.  Bob and Minnie spent many years as square dancers.  They still enjoy going to dances at the senior center.  He also enjoyed many years on a bowling team.  He was a member of the IOOF Lodge in Newcastle and the First United Methodist Church.  Bob helped with the Tool Pushing Cowpokes4-H Club for over 20 years. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing.
