Tommy grew up in Hampshire-Fannett and spent his summers in Onalaska, TX on Lake Livingston with his MeeMaw Jean and PawPaw George. He loved the lake and spending time with them. He was a son, brother, uncle, friend, and fiancee. Tommy’s life mattered. Heaven is welcoming him with open arms. In the words of Jack London, Call of the Wild: “He was mastered by the sheer surging of life, the tidal wave of being, the perfect joy of each separate muscle, joint and sinew in that it was everything that was not death, that it was aglow expressing itself in movement,  flying exultantly under the stars.”

He is survived by his fiancee Luka LaFountain, whom he called "the love of his life", his sisters Jennifer Foley, Erin Foley Stokes, Ashley Foley Gilland, Kate Foley Fields, and brother, Steve Foley, aunt Lucy Schelle, cousin Faith Shaffer, and many nieces and nephews.

We also want to thank Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor, Texas and specifically, Derrick Bolt.  His life will be celebrated later this year at Lake Livingston, a place where nothing but good memories existed.  (Also, some kind of service will be held near Beaumont for his friends there.  I will let everyone know when I know).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information about their passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also mention the funeral or memorial service details, including the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or self-published memorials.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact their obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their submission process, word count limits, and any specific requirements for formatting and content.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to take control of how they want to be remembered. This can also help alleviate some of the burden on their loved ones during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge anywhere from $50 to $500 or more.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's typically published on a website or social media platform and can include additional features such as photos, videos, guest books, and condolence messages.

How long do online obituaries stay posted?

The duration that an online obituary remains posted can vary depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them up indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time (e.g., 30 days).

Can I edit or update an existing obituary?

In some cases, it may be possible to edit or update an existing obituary, especially if it was published online. However, this may not always be possible with traditional print newspapers.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that informs readers of someone's passing. It typically includes only basic information such as the person's name, age, date of death, and funeral service details.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life, including their biography, accomplishments, and surviving family members. A death notice is shorter and more concise, focusing primarily on the funeral service details.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or complex family dynamics involved, it's essential to approach the obituary with tact and sensitivity. Consider consulting with other family members or a professional writer for guidance on how to navigate these situations.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person who has passed away and continue their legacy.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy when writing an obituary, verify all information through reliable sources such as birth certificates, passports, or other official documents. Double-check dates, names, and spellings to avoid errors.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for some time?

Yes! While it's more common to write an obituary shortly after someone's passing, there's no time limit on when you can publish one. This can be a therapeutic way to process your grief and celebrate the person's life even years later.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone while they are still alive. This can be a unique way to celebrate their life achievements and milestones while they can still appreciate it.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

How do I find archived obituaries from past years?

You can search online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in storing historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived materials.

Can I republish an existing obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes! If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an existing obituary at a later date. Be sure to check any applicable laws or regulations regarding republication.
