Bryan Johnson - July 29, 1956 - August 26, 2019

Bryan R. (Phyllis Hunt) Johnson, 63, a resident of Chassell, passed away Monday, August 26, 2019, at UP Health System Portage in Hancock.
He was born on July 29, 1956, in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Charles and Aliese (Collins) Johnson. Bryan lived in several places as a military child. Some of these places included Japan and Germany. Once he had graduated from high school in Roseville, Michigan, he attended Michigan State University where he received his undergraduate degree in Anthropology.
Bryan enlisted with the United States Marine Corps and following his honorable discharge, he returned to school to earn his master’s degree in Library Science from Columbia University with a specialty in rare books and printing. He met his wife Phyllis when they both worked at the Hunter College Library in New York City. The couple married on March 26, 1983. When Phyllis had the opportunity to advance her career, they moved to Blacksburg, Virginia, where Bryan started a small business supplying Japanese bookbinding materials to fine press publishers and hobbyists. In 1989, Bryan and Phyllis moved to the Copper Country where he continued his company in South Range for several years. After closing the company, he pursued library opportunities in Montana. When Phyllis retired in 2008, he moved back to the Copper Country to pursue his dream of being a free lance writer.
Bryan was a man with many interests. He loved Japan and all things Japanese. He loved books, letter press printing, and handmade paper. Growing up, he discovered an early Twentieth Century author names James Willard Schultz, who wrote “Boys’ Books” about the Blackfeet. He maintained his passion for the author and the subject all his life. With a colleague, he compiled an annotated Blackfeet bibliography and he also compiled a Blackfeet dictionary. One of his last projects, in conjunction with Montana State University’s Museum of the Rockies, was to transcribe and write an introduction for all the out of print Schultz novels and make them available on the internet through Amazon. He finished all but one.
He was a voracious reader of both fiction and non-fiction but particularly liked books about the outdoors, the history of World War 1, science fiction, and alternative histories. He loved to play scrabble and played it online every day. Bryan also enjoyed watching Jeopardy, cooking shows, and any shows about storage garages. Before he developed mobility issues, he loved to hunt, fish and hike. He loved the outdoors and loved writing all about. It.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in DePere, Wisconsin where he and Phyllis would travel often to be with their church family. Bryan was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.
Besides his parents, Bryan was preceded in death by his in-laws, Newell and Rosalind Hunt and a nephew, R.J. Nagel. A memorial service for Bryan will be held 11am Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell with Deacon Mary Lynn Adams to officiate. A visitation will be from 10am until the time of services at the funeral home.

Kenneth Johnson - June 12, 1944 - August 03, 2019

Kenneth A. Johnson, 75, a resident of N. Entry, Chassell, passed away Saturday morning August 3, 2019, at the UP-Health Portage Hospital from an apparent heart attack.
He was born on June 12, 1944, in Chicago, IL, a son of the late Nels and Francis (Timmer) Johnson. He was raised in the Chicago area and would summer in Felch, MI with his family.
Mr. Johnson was a veteran having served with the United States Army.
On November 24, 1967, he was united in marriage to the former Gayle Collette and the couple had raised three sons. Ken began a career as a Construction Estimator working for various companies. During that time, the family resided in Chicago, Lake Orion, MI, Tucson, AZ, and Brighton, MI. In 1992, he moved to make his home in Chassell when he accepted a position as a Construction Estimator for Gundlach Inc., retiring in 2012.
Ken enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting grass and working on various projects outdoors. He also enjoyed watching reruns of Gunsmoke and John Wayne westerns.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother this past July 8th. Surviving are: His wife: Gayle Johnson of N. Entry His sons: Andrew Johnson of Warrenton, VA Christopher (Jody) Johnson of Painesdale and their son Dane Adam Johnson of Baltimore, MD His brother: Phillip Johnson of Branson, MS
Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial for Kenneth will take place at a later time in Felch Cemetery.

Robert Courchaine - September 16, 1926 - July 22, 2019

Obituary Preview: CHASSELL - Robert J. Courchaine, 92, of Halfmoon Beach Rd., Chassell, died Monday morning, July 22, 2019 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, MI.
Robert (Bob) was born September 16, 1926 in Chassell, to the late Archie and Blanche Courchaine. He was the oldest of 4 children. He worked on his Father's farm while attending school.
After graduating from Chassell High School, Bob went on to attend and graduate from Michigan Technological University with a Bachelors Degree as a Chemical Engineer.
Bob went to work for Van Buren County Health Department as a Sanitary Engineer where he met Mary Ann Aubin. They were married May 28, 1949.
Bob and Mary moved often, as Bob worked for the Health Departments of Van Buren, Sanilac, Wayne and Washtenaw Counties. While working, Bob attended the University of Michigan and received his Master's Degree in Public Health in 1955. In 1956, Bob went to work at the Water Resources Commission in Lansing, where they made their home and raised their 6 children on Shelter Lane. By 1963, Bob was Regional engineer and a year later, named Chief Engineer of the Michigan Water Quality Control Division of the Water Resources Commission. Bob was also named Executive Secretary of the WRC Water Quality Development Commission.
Bob retired January 25, 1986, after 31 years of public service. Bob and Mary built a house on Chassell Bay, where they spent their retirement years. They were members of St. Anne's Catholic Church of Chassell.
The family of Robert Courchaine would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and amazing, dedicated staff of Iron County Medical Care Facility for their excellent care.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by Mary Ann Courchaine (wife), Ann Courchaine (daughter), David Ash (son-in-law), and Cletus and Mary Ellen Courchaine (brother and sister-in-law).
Bob is survived by Anita Ash of Denver, CO, Steve (Julie) Courchaine of Carmel, IN, Tom (Sherie) Courchaine of Crystal Falls, MI, Sue (Tom) Haviland of Petoskey, MI, Nancy Courchaine of Chassell, MI, Maryann (Bud) Schoch of Cheboygan, MI (sister) and Paul Courchaine (brother).
A Memorial Service is being held at St. Anne's Catholic Church August 2nd, 2019 at 11:30 a.m., followed by burial in Chassell Cemetery (family only) and a luncheon to follow at St. Anne's.

Margaret P. Rothenberger, 63, a resident of Dodgeville passed away Wednesday July 17, 2019, at the UP Health – Portage Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on October 16, 1955, in Hancock, a daughter of the late Wallace and Donna (Loonsfoot) Kinnunen. Margaret was raised in Chassell and was a graduate of the Chassell High School with the class of 1974. She then attended Suomi College.
In 1976, she was united in marriage to Michael Harsh. The couple moved to the Marquette area, where Margaret was a clerical worker for Marquette General Hospital. In 1986 they moved to make their home in Tamarack City. In 1992, Margaret was united in marriage to Brian Rothenberger. The couple had resided in Donken and Liminga. On May 30, 2014, Brian preceded her in death.
While residing in the Copper Country, Margaret worked as a secretary for Michigan Technological University, retiring in 2016. Margaret enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, camping, watching soap operas, The Price is Right and trips to the casino. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers. Suzanne M. (James) Etapa, 71, a resident of Chassell passed away Sunday June 30, 2019, at home following a lengthy illness.
She was born on August 6, 1947, in Detroit, MI, a daughter of the late Robert and Frances (Kairne) Tack. As a child she moved with her family to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where she graduated from the Stranahan High School with the class of 1965. Suzanne attended Junior College before moving to Farmington, MI to work for Federal Department Store.
On September 5, 1970, she was united in marriage to James D. Etapa. The couple moved to Ft. Lauderdale, F, where they raised their two daughters. Since 2009 they have made their home on the Paradise Rd., Chassell.
Mrs. Etapa was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Houghton. She had worked as a manager for Walmart while residing in Port St. Lucie, FL. Suzanne enjoyed shopping and going to lunch with her friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister and two brothers. Surviving are: Her husband James D. Etapa of Chassell Her daughters: Patrice (Ronald) Hazellief of Port St. Lucie, FL Karyn Etapa of Stuart, FL
Her grandchildren: Tyler Waters, Gaven Hearndon, Kale Hearndon, Tanner Willing, & Madesyn Hazellief.
A memorial service for Suzanne will be held 11:00 am July 9th, 2019 at S.S. Peter & Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton with Rev. Aaron Gehrke to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.

Paul D. Monette, 82, a former resident of Chassell passed away Friday, June 21, 2019, at the UP-Health Portage Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born on May 12, 1937, in Hancock, a son of the late Walter and Lila (Rodda) Monette. Paul was raised in Houghton and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1955.
Mr. Monette was a veteran having served with the United States Marine Corp. He had worked at Hornick’s Gas Station in Houghton the City of Houghton Police Department and Houghton County Sheriff’s Department. He then began a career working for the United States Postal Service in Houghton and retired in 1991, as the Postmaster in South Range.
In 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Priscilla Mattson. The couple had resided in Houghton until moving to make their home in Chassell in 1972.
Paul enjoyed being in the outdoors hunting & fishing. He also was active with the Houghton County Fair Board for a short time. Surviving are: His wife Priscilla Monette a resident patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility His sons: Paul (Lori) Monette of Lake Linden Michael (Tammi) Monette of Chassell His grandchildren: Natalie Monette, Tyler (Samantha) Monette, Danielle (Shane) Hupp and Ashlynn (Trevor) Kalcich Several great grandchildren His brother: Walter Monette of Milwaukee, WI
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service for Paul will be held 11 am Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Dale K. Snell, 66, a resident of Chassell passed away Monday, June 3, 2019, in Mosinee, WI following a lengthy battle with cancer with his family by his side.
He was born May 1, 1953, in Baltic, MI, a son of the late Ardell and Vera (Kaurala) Snell. Dale was a graduate of Jeffers High School with the class of 1972.
Mr. Snell was a veteran having served in with the United States Army. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, having cookouts, sports and metal detecting. He was a loving father to his two sons and in more recent times he was deeply grateful to have spent time with his daughter and her children.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Delbert Snell and his sisters; Shirley Foster and Kristine Ruotsi. Surviving are: His sons: Troy (Kathy) Snell of Mosinee, WI Brandon Snell of Chassell, MI His daughter: Jennifer (Will) Craig His brothers: David Snell of Iron Mountain, MI Dan Snell of Covington, MI Dennis Snell of Alston, MI Duane (Gina) Snell of Greer, SC His Grandchildren: Tailor, Riley, Ethan, Gabe and Abbey
Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thanks to his dear friends Dave and Chris for all of their help they offered Dale through his hard time. Dale wanted to send a sincere thank you to all of the Aspirus staff including Dr. Peterson. His family would like to thank the amazing hospice staff.

Calvin Ojanen - August 28, 1926 - May 04, 2019

Obituary Preview: Calvin E. Ojanen passed away peacefully at his Livonia, MI home Saturday, May 4, 2019. Born August 28, 1926 in Chassell, Calvin was proud of his Finnish heritage and growing up in the rugged upper peninsula of Michigan.
He served as an Army drill sergeant in WWII. Thanks to the GI bill, he completed his Electrical Engineering degree at MTU. Calvin married the love of his life, Ruth (Haarala), on June 16, 1951.
He enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, walking at the mall and baking nisu and pasties. Calvin built their home, had a private pilot's license, worked his entire career at Detroit Edison and lovingly cared for Ruth at home during her final 5 years.
Calvin and Ruth were blessed with four children: Randy (Sue), Michael (Helena), David (Ruth) and Diane (Bruce); 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was Ruth, his wife, and Calvin's nine older siblings.

Robert Kolkka - August 27, 1954 - April 21, 2019

Lake Linden- Bob Kolkka, 64 passed peacefully among friends and family on Easter Sunday, April 21st. Bob succumbed to aspiration pneumonia as a result of Parkinson’s Disease.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6th at Houghton County Historical Society Railroad Museum 53102 Hwy M-26 Lake Linden, Michigan 3102 Hwy M-26 Lake Linden.
Bob was born on August 27, 1954, to the late Mabel and Richard Kolkka in Chickopee, Mass. Bob grew up in Valley Stream, New York. He attended Rutgers University for BS degree and obtained his Applied Math Masters and Doctorate Degrees from Lehigh University. He began his career as a Math Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) but in 1984 found his way to Michigan Tech where he spent thirty rewarding years as a Professor of Math. He was an outdoor person from the onset having spent many summer vacations at the “camp” in his mother’s home in New Brunswick, Canada. He passion for camping and fishing was fulfilled in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Bob interest in ice hockey developed in his childhood days from arranging and playing hockey games on the local pond with the neighborhood kids. He continued playing until he was fifty years old. Bob was truly in his element living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Bob always had a special interest in Military History. In 1994 Bob discovered Civil War Reenacting. He soon began to recruit his students. As Bob was often quoted as saying “My primary interest is the history of the U.S. Civil War. As a teacher (preacher) of mathematics, I have always told my students the best way to learn math is to do it and that is in part why I do Civil War reenacting.” Bob’s recruits were indoctrinated at his house in Lake Linden where he setup at 19th century Victorian military camp where he hosted practices. His interest spread to include other Victorian Wars, in particular the Prussian War. In addition to local Civil War reenactments in the Midwest, he and his troops ventured numerous times to the Czech Republic to participate in reenactments.
Bob was slowed down by the effects of Parkinson’s during the last few years, but his interest and enthusiasm for the Victorian Period never waned. He often dressed in his reenactment gear for events at the Bluffs and Gardenview where he spent his last couple of years.
Bob volunteered at the Houghton County Historical Society Railroad Museum during his summers. His reenactment of the Great Train Robbery was a particular favorite.
He is survived by his sister, Maureen Kolkka of Chicago, Il.

Gordon Hietala - June 29, 1935 - April 06, 2019

Gordon W. Hietala, 83, a resident of Chassell passed away Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Omega House with his family by his side.
He was born in Hancock on June 29, 1935, the son of the late Edward and Impi (Lehto) Hietala. He was raised in Chassell and graduated from the Chassell Schools with the Class of 1953. Following high school Gordon moved to Detroit for work, where he met his wife. In 1957 he enlisted with the US Army, being honorably discharged in 1959. He returned to Detroit and on August 1, 1959, he was united in marriage to Edna “Darlene” Mars. The couple resided in Redford Township. Gordon began his career as a Union carpenter retiring in 1993.
In 1994, Gordon and Darlene would move to Chassell where they would spend their retirement. He enjoyed his retirement along with fishing and hunting. Gordon was a Life Member of the Upper Peninsula Club in Whitmore Lake, MI.
Besides his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Kangas and two brothers, Arthur and Kenneth. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Chassell His Children; John (Valerie) Hietala of Hamburg, MI Karen (Jeffrey) Calleja of Livonia, MI Jeanette (Thomas) Katona of Henrico, VA His grandchildren; Chad (Maddalena) Hietala, Mark Hietala Daniel Calleja Branden (Sydney) Katona, Ryan Katona
His siblings; Ralph (Beverly) Hietala and Richard (Esther) Hietala, both of Chassell. His brother-in-law Harold Kangas of Houghton and sister-in-law Marie Hietala of Northville, MI
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Gordon will be held at 12pm Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with Rev. Soren Schmidt to officiate. Burial with Military Honors will be held this spring in the Chassell Cemetery.
Friends may call on Saturday from 10am until the time of services at the church.

Guyla Komula - January 19, 1918 - March 13, 2019

A Mass of Christian Burial for Kathryn “Katy” Komula, 101, of Chassell who died Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the Lighthouse of Hancock, will be held 11 am Monday, March 18, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Chassell with Fr. Dustin Larson to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 17, 2019, from 4 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell where a parish prayer service will be held at 6 pm.
Born January 9, 1918, in Sagola, MI, she was the daughter of Edward and Agnes Collette. As a youth, she graduated from Chassell High School and worked in Houghton, Oak Park, Ill, and for Henry Funk at the Chassell Mercantile Co.
In 1943 she married Jack Komula and they lived in Ontonagon and Durango, CO, before building their home in Chassell in 1952.
Katy was a devout member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church and was active in church and community work. She loved her home and took great pride in her gardens and she always welcomed people who stopped to admire her flowers. An avid sewer and knitter, she sold crafts for 33 years at the annual Strawberry Festival. Known as the “Frog Lady”, she collected hundreds of frogs that decorated her home and yard.
Surviving are her daughter Mrs. Cheryl (John) Mattson of Dollar Bay; three grandchildren: Denise Mattson of Marquette, Darryl (Amy) Mattson of Ishpeming and Debbie (Jesse) Douglas of Appleton; four great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Jacob Mattson and Maxwell and Lily Douglas and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Jack, two sisters; Cleo Rowalt and Glennis Lorenz and a brother Sverre Collette.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be given to St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Chassell in memory of Katy.
Katy’s family would like to thank the staff at the Lighthouse in Hancock and the members of Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

Hilja T. Kokko, 96, a resident of DesRochers Rd., Pelkie/Arnheim, passed away Saturday morning February 23, 2019, at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse following a short illness.
She was born on October 8, 1922, in Kivijarvella, Finland, a daughter of the late Emil and Hilma (Klein) Tutipaa.
Hilja moved to the United States in 1953, residing in New York, NY, Detroit, MI, and then Waukegan, IL where she worked cleaning homes. On June 15, 1963, she was united in marriage to Matt A. Kokko. On August 12, 2008, Matt preceded Hilja in death.
Mrs. Kokko was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and caring for all.

Sylvia L. Gagnon of Chassell passed away on February 19, 2019, at the Franklin House of Portage Pointe.
Sylvia was born Sylvia Lydia Maki on August 11, 1926 in Trimountain, Michigan to John K. and Lydia (Lundi) Maki.
In 1944 Sylvia graduated from Jeffers H.S. and then in 1946 from the Upper Peninsula Beauty Academy in Marquette. She worked as a hairdresser in Marquette, Houghton, South Range and later had her own beauty salon in her home for over 50 years. Sylvia married John J. Gagnon at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Chassell on August 14, 1948. He passed away in 2007 after 59 years of marriage.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son Stephen, and brother Eino Maki. She is survived by her son Michael (Linda) Gagnon, grandsons Jason (Heather) Gagnon and Jeremy (Missy) Gagnon. Three great grandchildren, Braden, Cameron, and Khloe, sister-in-law Eleanor Maki, and numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her good friends Marilyn Flannigan and Kris Bosley, almost a daughter Garnet Destrampe, and Gabby Bosley whom she considered one of her grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held in the spring.

Esther M. Tervo, 89, a resident of Snake River Hill, Chassell, passed away Thursday morning February 14, 2019, at the Omega House in Houghton.
She was born on July 26, 1929, in Trap Rock Valley a daughter of the late Edward and Ellen (Isaacson) Angman. Esther was a 1947 graduate of the Lake Linden High School.
Following school Esther worked as a Secretary for the Copper Country Dairy in Dollar Bay where she met her future husband. On August 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Tervo. While raising the family and maintaining the household, she also helped Kenneth operate the farm, raising strawberries and potatoes, and running a small dairy herd on Snake River Hill for over 40 years. On December 4, 2016, Ken preceded Esther in death.
Mrs. Tervo was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton.
Preceding her in death were her husband Ken, her grandsons, Trevor Tervo and David Szyszkoski, her parents and her sister Ellen Loukus. Surviving are: Her children: James (Christine) Tervo of Chassell Carol (Gary) Saari of Chassell Judy (Steve) Szyszkoski of Chassell Richard (Naomi) Tervo of Chassell Robert (Rebecca) Tervo of Negaunee Eighteen grandchildren & Twenty great grandchildren One brother in law, Leo Tervo of Snake River Hill Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many other relatives and friends in the USA, Finland and Sweden
Funeral Services for Esther will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 19, 2019, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with David Taivalkoski to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday February 18, from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Tuesday February 19, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the Church.

Eleanor C. Sauvola, 79, a resident of Houghton and former Chassell resident, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on December 28, 1939, in Chassell, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Cecilia (Beauchamp) Colombe. On September 6, 1958, she was united in marriage to Ronald H. Sauvola. The couple resided in Chicago for a short time and then returned to Chassell to raise their family. Ronald passed away May 6, 1995.
Eleanor attended the Houghton Schools and graduated from Suomi College with a degree in Social Work. She had worked for many years as a Nurse’s Aide for Portage View Hospital and later provided shelter in her home for abused and neglected children. Six to thirteen small children and teens would be in the house at any given time.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ronald, her grandson Louis, her parents, her stepfather Walter Colombe, her brother Lawrence “Duffy” Colombe and her sisters Mary Nelson and Kathryn Sauvola. A memorial service in honor of Eleanor’s life will be held 1 pm Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with Rev. Soren Schmidt officiating. Burial will take place later this spring in the Chassell Cemetery.

Kenneth L. Kaiponen, 86, a resident of Chassell passed away Tuesday evening October 16, 2018, at the Pine of Goodrich Assisted Living Facility in Goodrich, MI.
He was born on February 19, 1932, in Trimountain, MI, a son of the late Waino and Ida (Koski) Kaiponen. Ken was raised in Chassell and was a graduate of the Chassell High School with the class of 1950.
Mr. Kaiponen was a veteran having served with the United States Army during the Korean War.
Ken had worked on the Great Lakes for a short time before moving to lower Michigan to work as a Union carpenter retiring in 1992. He was united in marriage to the former Geraldine Pasek. While residing in lower Michigan the couple resided in Redford, Farmington, and Oxford. Since 1992, they have made their home in Chassell.
Mr. Kaiponen was an active member of VFW Post #6507 of Chassell. He enjoyed golfing, working on projects in his wood shop and a few sewing projects from time to time.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Robert and his sisters Elaine and Joyce. Surviving are: His wife: Geraldine Kaiponen a resident currently at the Pines of Goodrich in Good Rich, MI
Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joyce was born on December 29, 1931 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Peter & Gertrude Timmer.
She leaves behind her husband, John, four children, and a grandson. Daughters, Laura Palmer, Glenna Sprague and Claire Murchie, son Stevan VanWestenburg and grandson Dale Sprague.
Joyce was married to her husband in January 1951, having met him in college. She was a dedicated homemaker and energetic volunteer. She was actively involved in every location she resided.
School Board member in Houghton, Brazosport Museum of Natural Science, Brazosport Art League, Clean City Commission, Keep America Beautiful, Nominated for Lyndon B. Johnson award for outstanding women volunteers when in Texas. Chassell Historical Organization, Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, and Doelle Senior Citizens when in Chassell as well as many more to numerous to mention.
She will be missed by everyone that has ever known her. A private celebration of her life is planned for a later date.
Memorial contributions in her honor could be sent to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.

James “Gary” Lyttinen, 80, a resident of Tapiola passed away Friday morning August 3, 2018, at the Omega House in Houghton following a lengthy illness.
Gary was born on August 14, 1937, in Baltic, MI, a son of the late Abram and Sylvia (Wimpari) Lyttinen. As a child, the family moved to Tapiola where Gary was a graduate of the John A. Doelle School with the class of 1955. He then worked on the ore boats before moving to the Detroit area where he attended an electrical school.
On August 15, 1959, Gary was united in marriage to the former Judith Hall. Since 1962 the couple had made their home in Tapiola. On July 7, 1997, Judith preceded Gary in death.
Gary had been employed with Upper Peninsula Power Company, retiring after 33 years as a Supervisor at the West Houghton Service Center. He then worked for Superior Water & Welding and held a variety of odd jobs.
Gary was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie and a founding member of the Otter Lake Sportsmans Club. As a young man, he enjoyed playing hardball and softball. He also enjoyed playing many years in the Copper Country Horseshoe League. More recently, he enjoyed helping his neighbors by cutting their lawns.
Preceding him in death were his wife, his son Norman, his parents, his brother Ray, and brother-in-law Gerald Marttila. Corrine Mae Coponen, 81, of Chassell, MI, took her departure to her heavenly home on Monday July 30, 2018, at her daughter’s home in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, surrounded by her loving family, following a short illness.
Corrine was born on April 11, 1937, in Ewen, MI, to the late Hubert and Olga (Sirvio) Anderson and moved to Detroit, MI, with her family when she was 16. She graduated in 1955 from Redford High School and worked as a secretary for the Detroit Board of Education for 9 years to the day.
On July 18, 1964, Corrine was united in marriage to David Coponen in Southfield, MI. They moved to Chassell in 1967.
Corrine professed her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Chassell. As written in Proverbs 31, she was “given to hospitality” and joyfully served her husband and all their guests throughout the years.
Corrine dearly loved her family and leaves behind her beloved husband of 54 years, 12 days; 5 children: Gordon, with wife Dora of Campobello, South Carolina, Cathryn with husband Roger Somero of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, Paul with wife Nylene of Chassell, Bruce of Chassell, and Thomas with wife Lena of Yacolt, Washington; 33 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren; brothers William with wife Jean of South Lyon, MI, and Robert with wife Eileen of Greer, South Carolina; sister Barbara Somero with husband Ralph of New Ipswich, New Hampshire; brother-in-law: David Waineo of Howell, MI, Aunt Stella Willson of Battle Ground, Washington, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, sister, Doris Niemela and sister Edith Waineo only 5 days prior.
Visitation will be 3-9 pm on Friday August 3, 2018, at the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the funeral. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 am burial will follow at the Chassell Cemetery.

Susan Kangas - January 08, 1955 - July 17, 2018

Obituary Preview: CHASSELL—Susan Rae Kangas, 63 of Chassell, died July 17, 2018, at home with her family by her side from Lewy Body Disease. She was under the good care of Asprius hospice since May 15, 2018.
She was born in Ontonagon, MI on January 8, 1955, to the late Brynolf and Elvie (Kero) Rautiola. She lived in the Mass City area, for her first five years. Susan graduated from Midland High School in 1973 and from Northern Michigan University in 1978 with a BA in Accounting.
She worked a short time at Kimberly Clark, Munising, MI and at UPPCO Houghton, MI and several part-time jobs (Isle Royale Natural History Association, Midwest Loan Services, Superior Accounting) while moving around supporting her husband’s career with the National Park Service. Her primary job was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.
Susan was united in marriage to Larry Kangas on November 18, 1978, and together they raised three sons and two daughters. She lived three summers in Munising, a winter in Everglades N.P., a summer in Rocky Mountain N.P. and four years in Tennessee and Kentucky at Big South Fork National River and Recreation area, before moving back to the U.P. to Grand Marais, Mi for four years. She then lived in Hancock, MI for ten years with summers on Isle Royale, before moving to Chassell with nine more summers on Isle Royale before retiring along with her husband. She enjoyed nature, being outside hiking, paddling, snowshoeing, skiing, camping, berry picking, gardening and time with the family. She was able to enjoy seven years of retirement before her illness.
Susan was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton. Susan is survived by her sister Cathy (Tom) Page of Naples, FL; her husband Larry, and her children, Amy (Matthew) Zimmer of Chassell, Matthew (Diane) Kangas of Atlantic Mine, Brad (Loretta) Kangas of Laurium, Laura (Andy) Heikkinen of Wasilla AK, and Derek Kangas of Chassell; grandchildren, Bryson, Alaina, Kylee, Trevor, Reid, Karmyn, Brienna, Parker, Troy,
Carson, Kangas, Clare, Karl, Nora, Lena Zimmer; mother-in-law Carolyn Kangas of Howell, MI; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law Eli Kangas and sister/brother-in-law
Pamela and Gary Pietila.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2018, in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Pastor David Taivalkoski officiating.
Friends may call on Thursday, July 19, 2018, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Houghton and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Christopher David Marchese, aged 60, passed away unexpectedly on July 14th, 2018 in Chassell, MI. He was the husband of Linda Marchese (Harkonen), sharing 25 years of marriage together.
Born in Detroit, MI., to Sam and Matilda Marchese, brother to John, Sam, Joseph and David, he was brought into this world and quickly became a member of a “Little Rascals” group of neighborhood boys that he remained in close contact with throughout his life. Always having a strong, independent personality, living by the beat of his own drum, he touched those around him in ways that brought laughter, love and sparks of joy. A painter by trade, but an artist for life, he was able to take the most random objects and create beautiful, memorable pieces of furniture for his loved ones.
He is survived by his spouse, Linda Marchese (Harkonen), his mother Matilda Marchese (Zubrowski), brothers John and Joseph Marchese, his daughter Alicia (Christopher) Stewart, step-daughters Amy (Jason) Tustin and Jennifer Wilson, and his grandchildren Alaina, Cade, Preston, Maxim, Grayson, Levon and Axl.
There will be a private prayer service held at the Memorial Chapel in Hancock, MI, at a later time with Fr. John Martignon to lead.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn Woodford; their children, Daniel (Denise) Woodford, Heidi (Eric) Keranen, Mark Woodford, Lisa Woodford, Jim Woodford, Kate Woodford, and Abby Woodford; and grandchildren Savannah, Cameron, and Bennett Woodford, and Jack, Carl, Lars, and Ray Keranen.
He is also survived by his brother, Peter (Carol) Woodford; his sisters, Barbara (Tom) Kelly, Elizabeth Woodford, Louise (Doug) Harmala, and Caroline (Paul) Schultz; mother-in-law, Martha Kempeinen; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Fulton.
A graveside funeral and committal service will be held on Wednesday, June 13, at 11 am at the Chassell Cemetery with Pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate.

Ernest Griff - October 14, 1926 - May 23, 2018

Ernest R. Griff, 91, passed away at home on May 23, 2018.
Ernie was born on October 14, 1926, on a farm near Antigo, Wisconsin, son of Joseph and Bessie (Pruha) Griff.
After graduating from Antigo High School in 1945 Ernie’s family moved to Wausau, Wisconsin. In Wausau Ernie worked for a trucking firm as a means of earning money for college expenses. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point then taught mathematics at Phillips High School, Phillips, Wisconsin for two years.
In 1952 Ernie enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and obtained his Master of Science degree in math-education in 1955. While enrolled at the University he taught math at the University Laboratory School and, for a short time served as president of the Neuman Club on campus. From 1953 to 1956 he taught mathematics at Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids. He is a life member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Ernie was lured to Houghton to teach math at Michigan Technological University in 1956. He was promoted to the academic rank of assistant professor of mathematics in 1958. In 1960, he accepted the open position as admissions counselor at Michigan Tech since the position of director of admission suddenly became vacant. Ernie was named the director of admissions in 1980. In 1983 Ernie was declared the recipient of MTU’s Clair M. Donovan Outstanding Service Award. He retired from MTU in 1986.
While as admissions officer, Ernie was one of twenty persons from throughout the United States selected by the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs (NAFSA) as a participant in a six-week seminar in India in 1965. In 1984 he was one of sixteen persons selected from throughout the nation by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) to participate in a two-week workshop in the Arab Gulf States.
Ernie was very active in his professional organizations. He served as chairman of the International Student Research Committee of AACRAO in 1983-84, served as a panelist at several annual meetings of AACRAO and NAFSA, and contributed articles for their publications. He authored the AACRAO monograph “Education in the Lebanon.” In two week stretches each year he traveled to Washington DC to work as a credentials analyst on a special contract of AACRAO and the Agency of International Development (AID) with the goal of placing students from Third World Countries into universities in the United States. He also was active in professional meetings at the state level. He was a past president and honorary life member of the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO).
At the local level, Ernie was a long-time member and president of the Portage Lake Toastmasters Club and served as the Area Governor. He was a member of the board of directors of the Copper Country United Way, serving as its president in 1975-76. He was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, once serving as Grand Knight of Hancock Council 692 and as Faithful Navigator of Msgr. A.J Rezek Assembly, and later became a member and a Grand Knight of St. Michael the Archangel Council 13224 in Chassell. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Chassell, a member of its administrative and Finance Committee, and also served as an usher and lector.
Much of Ernie’s efforts were focused on the programs of the Kiwanis Club of the Copper Country. He joined the club in 1961, served as its president in 1976-77, and served as a secretary from 1988 to 2010. He played a significant role in the development of the Builders Club of the Houghton Middle School, the Key Club of Houghton High School, and the Circle K Club of Michigan Technological University. In 1987-88 he served as a Lt. Governor in the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District of Kiwanis as well as being the chairman of the District Achievement Committee the following three years. In recognition for his leadership roles, the local club declared him a Kiwanis George F. Hixon Fellow. He has been a Kiwanis Legion of Honor member since 1986.
In 2000, the Chassell Lions honored Ernie as Citizen of the year. He enjoyed working with the younger generation by being a member of the Board of Governors of the Phi Kappa Tau Social Fraternity in Hancock.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Eugene; His sisters: Sr. Dorothy Griff and Hazel Green; his brother-in-law, Turner Richards; and sister-in-law, Cather (Day) Griff. His is survived by his sister Evelyn (Griff) Richards of Goldendale, Washington as well as by several nieces and nephews.
Donations in memory of Ernie Griff may be given to St. Anne Catholic Church, Chassell, or to a charity of one’s choice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 am Wednesday May 30, 2018, presided by Fr. Ben Hasse at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday May 29, 2018, from 5 to 8 pm at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Chassell with a prayer service to be held at 8:15 pm.
The Memorial Chapel & Plowe Funeral Homes of Chassell is in charge of arrangements. Ernie’s body will be laid to rest in the family burial site in the Bohemian Cemetery in Anitgo, Wisconsin.
