James Scott Hester - October 23, 1945 - December 06, 2023

Departed: 12/06/2023 (Georgetown)
Obituary Preview: James Scott Hester, 78, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, in Georgetown, SC.
Born on October 23, 1945, to the late Walter Filmore Hester, Sr. and Rebecca Crowder Hester, Scott grew up in High Point, NC spending many summers on Holden Beach, NC. The youngest of 7 children, Scott and all 4 of his brothers were decorated Eagle Scouts, a national record for a single family at that time. He graduated top of his high school class, receiving a full scholarship to Duke University. Scott went on to graduate from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and obtained a master’s degree in architecture and engineering from UPenn ('70) where he also earned a fellowship study under Louis I. Kahn. He forged a successful career in architecture, taking his family across the country during various projects.
Endowed with an impeccable memory and persistently curious mind, as a young child, he would ask his sister Becky to read to him out of the encyclopedia. An avid researcher and history lover, he had amazing memory recall – and could recite not only every president and vice president, but also their opponents and historical significance of their elections. If he was interested in a person, event, place or even a recipe he’d dive into the topic with near obsession to uncover lesser-known but vital details. His passions cast a wide net: Seaside life, WWII air battles, German cars, & great BBQ among them – but all overshadowed by his pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and deep love for his wife, Katherine. He found joy in beach walks with their dog, Kepley, hunting for shells and finding interesting flotsam and jetsam. In retirement, Scott spent time honing artistic hobbies: watercolor paintings, plane models, driftwood sculptures, and hand-painted fish surround the home. A lover of flavor and comfort food, Scott would take on challenging recipes, often bettering the restaurant version of she-crab soup, pecan pie, etouffee & shrimp Dijon. Sharp-witted and of strong but well-examined opinions, education and moral standards were paramount. He demanded the best from himself and others, often recounting life-lessons through entertaining tales of family antics. Locals who knew Scott might fondly remember him as the “man with the feathers in his cap.”
Scott was predeceased by his four brothers, Walter F. Hester Jr., Robert Hester, Dr. Joseph Hester and Jerry Hester, and his parents who lived in High Point, NC for 58 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Katherine Hester of DeBordieu, SC, daughter Kathryn K. Hester & son-in-law Larry J. Kuzniar of Georgetown, MA, daughter Holly H. Hester of Lake Wylie, SC, daughter Susan S. Hester of DeBordieu, SC, son James Scott Hester, Jr. of New Orleans, LA, as well as four grandchildren, Todd Kosel, Lindsay Kosel, Holden Kuzniar, and Grey Hester, and Scott’s sisters Becky (Hester) Wyatt of Winston-Salem, NC and Margaret (Hester) Wigglesworth of Greensboro, NC.
A private celebration of Scott’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date. His legacy lives on through his family, his passions, and the memories he shared with those who knew him.
