DONALD FRANCIS "DON" ZWILLING - September 30, 1945 - May 06, 2024

Departed: 05/06/2024 (Westlake)
Obituary Preview: Donald Francis “Don” Zwilling (September 30, 1945 – May 6, 2024)
Don was born in Cleveland in 1945 to Frank and Grace (nee Thoma) Zwilling. The fourth of six children, he attended Gesu School and graduated from Cathedral Latin High School in 1963. He graduated in the Summer of 1967 from The University of Dayton with a B.S. in Business Administration and started working as a staff accountant at Barnes Wendling soon afterward. In June, 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned as the accountant of the NCO Club at Fort Greely, Alaska. Don returned to Barnes Wendling in March, 1970, and worked there for his entire career. He retired from his full-time position as a Director in 2010, but continued to work part time for many more years.
In 1966 Don met the love of his life, Denise Perozek, at one of a series of picnics that their groups of friends regularly attended. They married on November 21, 1970 at St. Thomas More Church in Brooklyn, Ohio. They were blessed with four children: Dan (Erica), Doug (Kelly), Darcie (Brian) Murphy, and Debra (Mike) McGivney. Don and Denise set a great example of parenthood during their fifty-three years of marriage and welcomed fourteen grandchildren: Cloe, Mara, Jenna, Ella, Kiersten, Luke, Aidan, Liam, Declan, Connor, Brendan, Jack, Deegan, and Cormac. Don loved to spend time with his grandchildren, specifically going with them to Cedar Point to enjoy the thrill rides there even into his seventies and treating them to ice cream while they filled the seating area at Malley’s in Bay Village.
Don was a man of both hard work and service. Including his Army service, he worked for Barnes Wendling for fifty-six years. He cherished the relationships he developed with his clients while helping to meet their needs in the areas of accounting, business valuation, and estate planning. But he also made time for service to professional organizations and his community. Don was a Past Director of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and of the Cleveland Chapter of CPAs. He was also a member and past president of both the Kiwanis Club of Bay Village and The First Friday Club of Cleveland; he was very active throughout his life at St. Raphael Church; and he served on Bay Village City Council for fifteen years.
While Don worked hard to provide for his family and to support his clients, he also made time to fully enjoy life. He loved to golf and patiently taught his four children the activity. Even if there were more wayward shots than good ones, he created many memories on the course at Avon Oaks. Don also loved to swim, doing so late into his life when accompanying his grandchildren on summer days to the Bay Village or Avon Lake Aquatic Centers. And he loved spending time with his family at gatherings that commonly involved kickball games with the grandkids in his backyard, with Don fully involved in the game and a ball or two being lost in the trees. Lastly, he had wonderful memories of trips to the Holy Land and Europe with friends from his and Denise’s picnic days and from St. Raphael.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Grace, his sister Diane Etowski, and his brothers Fred and Bill. He is survived by his wife Denise, his brothers Joe (Shirley) and Ed, his brother-in-law Jack Etowski, his four children and their spouses, and his fourteen grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Don at St. Raphael Church (525 Dover Center Road, Bay Village) at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 13th. He will be entombed at St. Joseph Cemetery, Avon. Friends may call at the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Westlake, 25620 Center Ridge Road, Sunday May 12th from 1 - 4 pm. Memorial contributions to St. Raphael Church or The West Side Catholic Center (3135 Lorain Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44113) will be greatly appreciated.

CHRISTOPHER M. "CHRIS" DeVITO - November 27, 1965 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Westlake)
Obituary Preview: Chris DeVito passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024, surrounded by his family. Chris always endeavored to prioritize family, faith, friends and Notre Dame above all else.
Chris is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, of 33 years, and their four daughters Kate Kennedy (Joe), Mary, Laura, and Annie; his beautiful granddaughter, Julia Kennedy; and his “best friend” Rudy, his Bernadoodle. His girls were his pride and joy, and he could sing along with them to T Swift, One Direction, and any other teen heart-throb. Nothing made him happier than coaching their basketball teams, cheering for them on the field or track, or watching The Bachelor with them.
Chris was the devoted son of Kathy and the late Nick DeVito and an adored son-in-law of Geno and Didi McKenna. Chris was the dear brother of Kathryn, Dave (Robbye), and Nick (Cindy). He was a treasured brother-in-law to Mo’s family, uncle to twenty-five nieces and nephews, nephew of many aunts and uncles, Godparent to six, and favorite cousin and in-law to the families of DeVitos, McGarrys, Donovan, Lowes, Dignans, Bradleys, and McKennas.
After graduating from University School, Chris attended the University of Notre Dame. While in high school, he was asked by former head coach Gerry Faust to play on the varsity football team. Instead, he chose to play on the full-pads intramural squad with his beloved friends of Stanford Dorm – the Stanford Studs. This incredibly close group of fun-loving, kind, athletic (mostly), smart, driven, and loyal friends have remained very close decades later. In fact, Chris sent out the annual request to “the boys” to pick a ND football game, or two, where they would reunion in South Bend at a tailgate, attend the game, and cheer quite loudly for the Irish. In Chris’ sophomore year at ND, he met and started dating Mo. Seven years and a few degrees later, he asked her to marry him in traditional fashion on bended knee at the Notre Dame Basilica.
Chris graduated from Ohio State University with his law degree and had the good fortune to work with his father for a few years. He later became a partner at Morganstern, McAdams & DeVito where he valiantly and courageously represented several hundred clients, often against the biggest titans, including global auto manufacturers. Many clients and legal colleagues remain dear friends of Chris.
As a community leader, Chris served as the President of the Cleveland ND Club, Cleveland National AirShow Board and Executive Committee, and Boys and Girls Club Board. In 2009 the Notre Dame Club of Cleveland selected Chris as the alumnae of the year.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 18 at 12 noon at St. Christopher Church, 20141 Detroit Rd, Rocky River, OH. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.)   A wake will be held at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home, 25620 Center Ridge Rd, Westlake on May 17 from 4 pm – 7 pm. Feel free to wear your favorite blue and gold in Chris’ honor.
Chris requested that in lieu of flowers, any contribution you’d like to make can be made to either: 1) support pancreatic cancer immunotherapy research to University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, Institutional Relations & Development, P.O. Box 94554, Cleveland, OH 44101-4554 or to UHGiving.org; or 2) help local families dealing with cancer with hot weekly meals run by the Village Project, 27378 W. Oviatt Rd, Bay Village, OH 44140. Chris’ family is truly humbled and grateful for the incredible personal and exceptional medical care by UH staff for Chris and also the kindness and support of our family, dear friends, and community.

DENNIS "DENNY" WILLIAM BASEN - April 01, 1960 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Westlake)
Obituary Preview: Dennis “Denny” William Basen (age 63) passed away on March 27th, 2024. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Oravetz, survived by his father, Robert Basen (Josie), his children, Joshua Basen (Kathleen), Jacob Basen (Alicia), and Bailey Lawrence (Nicholas), and most importantly, his six beloved grandchildren, Jacob (14), Abigail (11), Cameron (10), Penelope (6), Ellie (5), and Mia (3).
Denny was born and raised in Lakewood, Ohio. After graduating from Lakewood High School in 1978, he worked as a foreman for Astrup Awning Company in Cleveland. After some time at Astrup, Denny found that in order to eventually fulfill his potential and one day provide the life he envisioned for his family, he needed to become his own boss. At age 27, with only his spouse, Elizabeth “Libby” McCaffery Basen by his side, with no financial support and a host of doubters, Denny started his own awning business and named it Awning Fabricators. During this time, Denny and Libby raised their three children, providing unconditional love, support, guidance, and opportunities that they themselves never had. They did their best, and it was more than enough.
Denny ran Awning Fabricators for nearly two decades, building the company into one of Northeast Ohio’s most prominent awning businesses. This afforded him the opportunity to sell the company, retire early, and pursue his hobbies and interests. Denny’s passions included travel, fishing, and simply enjoying the outdoors, often accompanied by his trustworthy black Labradors, Clifford & Norman. His passion for sunshine, warm weather, and living close to the water prompted him to relocate to Largo, Florida in his later years. He would often phone family and friends who lived up north with updates on his perfect weather forecast or to describe a particularly spectacular sunset he just witnessed. His children and grandchildren visited him in Florida as frequently as they could, and he did his best to make those experiences extra-special. At Indian Rocks Beach they searched for shark teeth in the surf, paddle boarded, built sandcastles during the day and enjoyed ice cream and orange sherbet in the evenings. In Tampa Bay, they took airboat rides through the mangroves, looked for dolphins, manatee and explored all the interesting sea-life that came their way.
While mostly content living under the Florida sun, Denny’s urge to explore persisted. He bought a Ford E-Transit van, retrofitted it with a bed, a sink, custom cabinets for storage, and, of course…..an awning. He named it, “Freeman” because the vehicle allowed him to travel wherever he pleased, whenever he pleased. He drove Freeman all across the United States, visiting well-known landmarks like the National Parks and charming small towns that were off the beaten path. Independence and the ability to set his own schedule mattered a great deal to him.
During the pandemic in 2020, Denny moved back to Northeast Ohio to be closer to his father, children, and grandchildren. He worked part-time jobs to supplement his income. The work also satisfied his urge to be productive and useful for others. He was a provider by nature. When family or friends needed a tool, an extra set of hands, or help in any way, Denny was always there.
For many years, Denny was best defined by his intensity, grit, determination, relentless work-ethic, and no-excuses approach to life; attributes that made him a very successful business owner but a difficult person to be around at times. Following a period of discovery, he developed a greater sense of appreciation for each day. He was ALWAYS working to improve himself, as evidenced by the quotes, notes, phrases, and excerpts written on notepads, chalkboards, and post-it notes found throughout his home. He was perpetually striving for improvement in every aspect of his life. In recent years, family, friends and acquaintances alike noticed his positivity, patience, and joy he found in life’s simple pleasures. Sharing a sucker with a granddaughter, watching a grandson compete, enjoying a meal with his kids, playing cards with his beloved companion, Eileen — these things made his day. Material items meant very little. Family, friends, love and gratitude meant everything.
Denny’s sudden passing was heartbreaking to those who knew and loved him. For those left behind, he was taken far too soon. However, his loved ones can find solace in knowing that despite living just under 64 years, his life was complete and full. The odds were stacked against him from the very beginning, but he overcame the adversity. He leaves behind children and grandchildren that embody both his ambition and his compassion and will carry his legacy through future generations. It was a life well-lived, on his terms, until the very end. May he Rest In Peace and watch proudly from above.
A Celebration of Life to allow family and friends to gather and share stories will take place this summer. The family will update this announcement once a day and a location is selected. They will also share pertinent event details across common social media platforms when able. In lieu of sending flowers or condolences directly to the family, please take the time to do something nice for another person when called upon. Denny would appreciate it.
