Evanna M. Sullivan - September 23, 1942 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Utica)
Obituary Preview: Evanna Sullivan, a long-time resident of Utica, passed away quietly at Wynn Hospital on May 15th after a brief illness.
Evanna was a loving mother to her three children, James, Croton-on-Hudson, NY, Thomas, Litchfield, NH, and Kara, Cape Coral, FL, and her six grandchildren, Elijah, Caedran, Tiernan, Jada, Anya and Iris. Her love and generosity were unconditional and anyone in the family could count on at least a greeting card - and often a visit - on any special occasion. She was very proud of all her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Evanna was born in Port Jervis, NY, in 1942 and graduated from Port Jervis High in 1960. She attended the State University at Oswego, earning a teaching degree in 1964. She and her former husband James Sullivan met in college and ended up settling in Utica for the sole reason that it was the place where they could both find teaching jobs in a local school district. Serendipity brought her to Utica, but it was her generous spirit that endeared her to hundreds of fortunate people across the local area over the years. Evanna was a tried-and-true believer in the City of Utica, always pointing out the positives, and never considered moving elsewhere, even as she aged and broke her wrist slipping on an icy sidewalk one winter recently.
Evanna taught until 1967, leaving the workforce just before her son “Jimmy” was born, and was a stay-at-home Mom through the late 1980s, when she returned to teaching, first at Our Lady of Lourdes and then General Herkimer Elementary School. A walk through the mall or a trip to a restaurant was often interrupted by a former student describing how wonderful a teacher Evanna had been when they were in her class.
Evanna was also a life-long Catholic with strong faith and an abiding belief that “whatsoever you do to the least of My brothers, that you do unto Me.” She volunteered at her local church Mary, Mother of Our Savior (formerly Our Lady of Lourdes) for decades, as well as the Thea Bowman House in downtown Utica. She was a crucial pillar of that faith community, and her brief hospitalization brought forth an outpouring of love, prayer, and kind words from them for which her family will be forever grateful.
Evanna was also an avid dancer, spending most special events on the dance floor, and enjoying traveling as well. Just within the past decade, she drove cross-country with a friend of hers and visited Alaska on a cruise.
Evanna is survived by her children, her grandchildren, her former husband, her brother Peter, Port Jervis, NY, a niece and two nephews, and many cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes campus, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Evanna will be laid to rest with her family in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY.
Remembrances in Evanna’s name may be made to Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish or Thea Bowman House. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
The Sullivan family would like to acknowledge the care and compassion shown them by the doctors and staff at the Wynn Hospital. They would also like to thank Father Jason Hage for his spiritual guidance and comforting words.

William J. Hinge - January 07, 1934 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Utica)
Obituary Preview: William Joseph Hinge, passed away on April 26, 2024, at MVHS Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Bill was born January 7, 1934, in Utica, New York, to Gertrude and Edward Hinge. Bill’s early years were spent living in Barneveld and Deerfield, New York. Barneveld was always home, a place he cherished. Bill graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Utica where he developed close
friends, relationships he sustained throughout his life. From an early age, Bill, along with his brother Ed, was a serial entrepreneur, running a hot dog stand, raising chickens, and running service stations in West Utica. Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1954 –
1956. On July 27, 1961, Bill married Suzanne Maher with whom he spent 62 very special years. After starting a family, Bill wanted to return to Barneveld and convinced Suzanne to buy the “The Old Stone Meeting House,” an abandoned, 1820 structure in town that had never been lived in. It was Bill’s skill, knowledge, and vision that transformed this shell of a building into a warm home, perfect for raising his and Suzanne’s four children and hosting their multitude of friends and family for countless special
occasions and legendary get togethers. Bill was quite handy. In fact, “puttering” was his hobby. This made it a natural fit when in 1970 he bought a hardware store in the center of Barneveld. For 30 years, Bill ran Hinge Hardware, assisting the community with all of their business and home improvement needs. People flocked to the store to solicit Bill’s advice and to exchange stories. It was often Bill’s stories—and welcoming spirit—that kept them coming back. Still an entrepreneur in his 80s, Bill’s final business was the establishment of the Foothills Mercantile, a unique antique and wares consortium of small vendors patronized by neighbors
and visitors from afar. Bill always gave back to the community. He was one of the American Red Cross’s most prolific donors, giving more than 300 pints of blood. Always the servant leader, Bill was very active in the Barneveld Volunteer Fire Department, served the Village of Barneveld as a board member, and then for 17-years as its mayor. Bill helped restore Unity Hall, a vital community center, and served on its board. He was also active with the Town of Trenton Chamber of Commerce, Foothills Rotary, and the board of United
Cerebral Palsy. Bill had a love of adventure and especially enjoyed skiing with his family, buddies and the Elephant Stew Ski Club. In the 70s, Bill was smitten by hot air ballooning after being invited to partake in a ride and eventually went on to pilot a solo flight. Bill loved to travel, taking his family on fun trips to explore new places across the U.S. In later years, he extended his adventures overseas; dancing with a nun in Ireland, touring ancient ruins in Italy, and riding an elephant in Africa. But many of his happiest times were spent at the family camp at Otter Lake. After supervising the day’s camp projects, he would share stories on
the screened-in porch or while touring the lake at sunset, as slow as possible, on the family party barge. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor and was often asked to tell stories and give speeches. He annually attended the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick dinners where he was encouraged to stand up from his place of
honor at the dais to share a few words, unfailingly delivered with his trademark wit and charm. Bill is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his children, Matthew Hinge and Hillary Hollister-Hinge, Shanley Hinge and Gary Franklin, Bernadine and Michael Williams, Nicholas and Antonia Hinge, and his grandchildren, Garrett and Amanda Hinge, Natalie and Cassandra Franklin, Eleanor and Fiona Williams, and Sophie and Theodore Hinge. A very special addition to Bill’s family was his South African exchange- student son, Philip Court. Bill loved, and was much loved in return, by his in-laws, and his many nieces
and nephews who fondly referred to him as Uncle Bozo. Bill was predeceased by sister, Elizabeth; brother-in-law, Glenn Haskell; brother, Edward;
and sister-in-law, Jacqueline Hinge. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo’s Church, Holland Patent, where a Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Barneveld. The Hinge family wishes to express their tremendous gratitude to family and friends for their attentiveness and support throughout these last several months, as well as to the many caregivers for
their efforts and kind hearts. In Bill’s memory contributions can be made to Unity Hall Foundation, P.O. Box 393, Barneveld, NY 13304
(unityhall.com) or to the Bill Hinge Park, James Fruscella, P.O. Box 44, Barneveld, NY 13304. Messages of sympathy at www.mmknfd.com

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Utica)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen Ann Kiernan of Utica/Rochester, NY, passed away at the age of 59.
Kathleen (Kathy) spent her working career in the service of others. With a Masters of Social Work from SUNY Brockport College, Kathy worked for numerous nonprofits and philanthropic organizations including Lifetime Assistance, Planned Parenthood, Pluta Cancer Center and Mary Cariola Center. Kathy’s passion and heart resided in positioning herself in organizations that supported persons with disabilities, struggling youth, support of women, animals, any others dealing with unwanted life circumstances. The unrelenting social justice passion of Kathy gave her the opportunity to often lead the charge in fundraising, and overall public awareness of any cause she was championing.
Kathy never met a stranger. From the check- out clerk at Trader Joe’s to the co-worker across the table, Kathy had a natural ability to connect with people and make everyone she met feel loved and welcomed. Her heart was one of taking care of others, most often second to herself. She was always aware of how not only the large gestures, but also the small ones lifted others. Whether a simple handwritten note to one of her sisters while away at college, the comforting hug to a homesick smaller cousin in her youth, to thoughtful lunches with her longtime friends as they all navigated life’s challenges, her spirit emanated her every action to heal and love the world around her.
Kathy is survived by her mother, Joan McLaughlin; father, James Kiernan; sister, Suzanne Kiernan Barnes (F. Christopher Giruzzi) and sons, Troy, Luke and Noah; her sister, Eileen Kiernan (Matt Clarke) and sons, Jackson and Coleman; sister, Karen Kiernan McDonald (Heidi Hensley) and daughters, Mia, Luca and Opal and sons, Finn, Zeke and Baylor; sister, Peggy Kiernan James (Edmund James) and son, Ozzy and daughters Stella and Rose; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles, childhood friends, high school and college friends that Kathy always considered family. Her departure comes as a great shock and deep loss to her entire family and countless others who loved her. The family appreciates your support during this time and asks that you make contributions to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in lieu of flowers. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home (online at www.alzfdn.org)
The family will receive guests on Saturday, April 27th from 12-2 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica, with a tribute to Kathy by her sisters at 1pm.

Thomas F. Moore - January 19, 1938 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Utica)
Obituary Preview: Thomas F. Moore (86), the loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle of a large Irish clan, joined many of his loved ones in Heaven on April 12, 2024. Tom passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with his loving family by his side.
On January 19, 1938, Tom joined the loving family of Ralph and Genevieve Moore of Dudley Ave in Utica. Ralph and Genevieve welcomed Tom into their home along with his sisters June & Bette and his brother Ralph, to complete an Irish Catholic home that prioritized family, faith, and friends above all.
Tom had a wonderful childhood, spending time enjoying (and sometimes terrorizing) the Cornhill section of Utica with his friends, many of whom he remained close with until his final days. He graduated from Utica Catholic Academy in 1956, where he was a proud member of Coach Francis “Shorty” Powers’ legendary basketball team. Tom went on to attend MVCC and serve his country honorably in the United States Army, where he had fond memories of his time spent in Alaska.
On June 8, 1963, Tom was married to Mary Ann O’Connor of Syracuse, a union that lasted over 60 years. They began their family in Utica but soon after moved to their “forever home” in Whitesboro, where they were blessed to welcome 7 children.
While raising his family with Mary Ann, Tom spent over 30 years in various roles with Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation. Tom loved working at “NiMo”, but what he loved, even more, were the numerous co-workers who became extended family members.
After retiring, Tom worked in the athletic departments at SUNYIT and Utica College and eventually became the Recreation Director and Director of Senior Citizens for the Town of Whitestown. He also served as a past President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Utica Gas & Electric Federal Credit Union and was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Although Tom had an accomplished professional and social life, no role brought him more joy than being Dad to his 7 kids, “Pa” to his 15 grandchildren whom he affectionately referred to as his “chips off the ol’ block”, and he was delighted to welcome his first great-grandchild to the family. During his final days, he made it a priority to let them all know how much he loved them, even though he had spent his life showing them.
Tom is predeceased by many beloved family and friends, but the one he could not bounce back from was the recent and unexpected loss of his wife Mary Ann. His family lost a large part of him as soon as they lost her. It gives the family peace to know the two of them are together again, spending time with their son, Tommy, a long-awaited reunion.
In addition to Mary Ann, Tom was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Genevieve, his siblings June Moore Sherry, Bette Moore Furner, and Ralph Moore; his in-laws Leo “Bud” Sherry, Walter Furner, William and Rosalind O’Connor, Nancy O’Connor Jacuk and Dave Jacuk, Rita O’Connor Baker; nephews Gary Furner, David Jacuk, Bob Sherry, and niece Mari-Beth Moore Barrett.
Tom is survived by his six children, Colleen Moore Enright (Mark), Daniel Moore (Cathy), Kathleen Moore Giehl (Gary), Kevin Moore, Patrick Moore (Lynn) and Sheila Moore Valentino (Joe); his grandchildren Molly (Chris), Brendan (Siobhan), Connor, Cayla (Jack), Jack, Ryenn, Patrick, Emma, Sean, Kyle, Alex, Genevieve, Norah, Thomas, Ellie, his great-grandson William, his brother-in-law Peter, and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
In addition to being a great husband, father, and grandfather, Tom was also a great friend. The strength and longevity of many of his friendships have always been something that his family marveled at, and we would like to thank so many of them who have been so good to him, especially since we lost Mom.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday, April 28th from 2-5 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Kowalczyk & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd. Utica. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 29th, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Mary, Mother of our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Campus, Utica.

Obituary Preview: Rosemary Helen (Reiser) Paniccia, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on April 8, 2024, in Utica, NY, at the age of 88. Born on February 22, 1936, in Clyman, WI, Rosemary's life was one of warmth, dedication, and love, traits that she bestowed generously upon all who knew her.
Rosemary was known for her kind heart, strong work ethic, and common-sense approach to life. Growing up on a farm in rural Wisconsin, she attended Mayville High School up until the 10th grade, after which she devoted all of her time taking care of her ailing mother. It was during this time that she began corresponding with a young airman stationed in California, her future husband, Samuel Rocco Paniccia of Utica, NY. The correspondence blossomed into a romance and on September 6, 1958, they were married in St. Francis de Sales Church in Utica. They shared a loving union of over 44 years until Samuel’s passing in 2002. During her marriage, she embraced the role of homemaker with grace and love. With quiet resolve, she passed on to her children her faith, love of family, and appreciation for nature. Family and friends that gathered there were always greeted with open arms and a ready smile. After Samuel’s passing, Rosemary continued the tradition as the center of family life, especially on Sundays where she prepared traditional Italian dinners and birthday celebrations for the extended family.
Rosemary's life was a testament to the values she held dear. As a devout Catholic, she found strength and solace in her faith, which guided her through life's many challenges and triumphs. She attended Mass regularly at St. Thomas Church in New Hartford for many years before transitioning to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica.
Earlier in life, she looked forward to Bingo nights with her children and friends. As a skilled player of word games, Rosemary's love for Scrabble and Jumble kept her mind sharp and her spirit lively. She also enjoyed card games, with Pitch and Seven-up being among her favorites. Her competitive nature served to bring out joy and laughter during family game nights.
Rosemary also enjoyed spending quiet time in nature which provided her with a sense of peace and calm. She would take long walks in the woods near her home and sit quietly at a favorite spot her children called “the Big Rock.” She loved these precious moments, instilling in her family an appreciation for the natural world.
A devoted matriarch, Rosemary took immense pride in her family. She never missed an opportunity to attend her children's and grandchildren's school performances and activities. Her legacy is one of unconditional love and the importance of family, which she lived out every day of her life.
Rosemary is survived by her eleven children, Samuel, Jr. (Marie) Paniccia, Alfred (Caroline) Paniccia, Mary (Dr.Ronald) Kaye, George (Darlene Janucik) Paniccia, Linda Paniccia, Joseph Paniccia, Eric Paniccia, Annette (Peter) Weichlein, Andrew Paniccia, Thomas Paniccia and Melissa Paniccia and thirteen cherished grandchildren, Samuel, Bridgette and Sean Paniccia, Scott, Natalie, Jacob and Grace Paniccia, Joshua, Michael and Zachary Kaye and Julia, Emily and Anna Weichlein.
She is fondly remembered by her brothers-in-law, Rocco (Jan) Paniccia and Richard Paniccia and her sisters-in-law, Rose Minarchi, Marie Arellanes, and Phyllis DuRoss. Predeceasing her are her loving husband, Samuel, her father and mother, George and Genevieve (Seiler) Reiser, her brother, George Reiser Jr. and sister Patricia (Sister Beata) Reiser, her brother-in-law and wife, Alfred and Irene Paniccia, Richard’s wife, Dolores Paniccia, Rose’s husband, William Minarchi and Marie’s husband, Joe Arellanes.
As we say farewell to Rosemary, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart that gave so much to so many. Her spirit will live on in the stories shared, the memories cherished, and the love that continues to bind us all together.

Mary Patricia Altier - September 27, 1950 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Utica)
Obituary Preview: Mary Patricia Altier passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024, after a brief illness.
Mary was born on September 27th, 1950 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of the late Richard J. Altier and Helen Marie (McGuire) Altier. Mary came into this world with a multitude of disabilities but she was graced with a strong and resilient spirit. Despite being told that Mary was unlikely to survive, her parents put their faith in God with Mary defeating the odds and living a full and rewarding life for over 73 years.
Mary was a graduate of Linton High School and went on to be an invaluable office assistant at the family’s business, All Lines Specialist Insurance, for over 25 years. Although Mary had many challenges, God blessed her with a photographic memory, and she could recall the names and addresses of all the clients of the agency. That same talent shone through while watching game shows like Jeopardy where Mary’s command of facts would beat the buzzer of the on-air contestants every time. In addition to puzzles, word games and her bowling league, Mary’s favorite hobby was collecting recipes of her favorite foods.
In her retirement years, she was also a participant in the day program at Saratoga Bridges. It was there that she met many new friends and was part of their phenomenal choir, One Voice. In addition, Mary was a lifelong communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church and often served the gifts during Sunday Mass.
In the last few years of Mary’s life, she was a resident of Schuyler Ridge in Clifton Park. There she was embraced and loved by all who knew her, and they became her second family. We are grateful to the entire staff and humbled by their kindness and care.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brother, Rich Jr.
Mary is survived by her siblings; Kathleen Kleinhans and her husband James, Leslie Campbell and her husband Dan and Nancy Borini and her husband Louis. In addition, Mary leaves behind her nephews and nieces, Greg, Kim, Mikey, Elizabeth, Katie, Em, and Anthony.
Calling hours will be on April 17th from 10 – 11 am at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home at 1550 Rte #9 Clifton Park NY 12065. A service celebrating Mary’s life will immediately follow. Burial will take place at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna where Mary will be laid to rest alongside her devoted parents and brother.
It is our hope that, in reading a little bit about Mary’s life, she will serve as an inspiration to others facing their own unique challenges.
