Janice Jowers - June 19, 1947 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: With Faith, Hope, and Love, she brightened the world and impacted the lives of her family, her friends, and the children she taught. Janice Lee James Jowers, age 76, of Mary Esther, Florida, passed away on December 26, 2023, after a brief struggle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in Tallahassee, Florida on June 19, 1947, to Walter and Rachel James. From their idyllic home at James Pond Road, she learned the importance of love, music, education, and family. She attended Leon High School before studying education at Florida State University and moving to Fort Walton Beach, Florida to begin her teaching career.
While attending Florida State, Janice met the love of her life, Keith Jowers, and together they would build a world that she truly loved. She may or may not have snuck out of the house for their first double-date, but nobody with actual knowledge will fess up. They dated for three years before (as Keith would say) making it legal. The two were married on June 9, 1968, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Florida.
Janice and Keith couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. Alan was born in 1970; Kary followed shortly thereafter in 1972; and in 1978 Janice’s two little boys were joined by a baby girl, Kendra. Together, those five would enjoy the adventures of life including countless family trips to Tallahassee, van club convoys, midnights at Santa Rosa Mall tallying up the results of the Billy Bowlegs Midnight Run and participating in all manner of local sports and music events.
Though she loved teaching, singing, and creating lovely crafts with her hands, Janice’s favorite role was that as a grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandkids and loved being their Nana. She attended all their important events and cared for them in all the seemingly unimportant moments. She never failed to have a cold “Nana-water” ready for them when they came to her house. She was fortunate that all her grandchildren lived locally, and all of them, from age 4 to age 30, have their own special, personal relationship with their Nana.
Janice was passionate about her role as an elementary school teacher with the Okaloosa County School District. She taught 3rd grade at Wright Elementary School from 1969 to 2009. After her initial retirement, she was convinced to return to teaching for a few more years. It was an easy decision for her because she was able to teach some of her own grandchildren during that second stint. Some of her greatest friends in life were her fellow teachers from Wright Elementary, and she enjoyed the periodic lunches she and her fellow retired teachers would have.
In her retirement, Janice was also an active member of the Fort Walton Beach Community Chorus, devoting her time and energy to singing, ever filling her heart with delight.
Janice will always be remembered for her warm smile and the way that she loved on her friends and her family. Her favorite words were Faith, Hope and Love, and she embodied each of them. We could not have asked for a better Wife, Mother, and Nana, and we will miss Janice every single day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
Janice was preceded in death by her beloved parents Walter and Rachel James, her brother Bill James, her sister-in-law Iloni Franz James, and her infant grandson Joshua Alan Jowers. She is survived by her husband Keith Jowers; her children and their spouses, Alan and Kristi Jowers, Kary and Julie Jowers, and Kendra and Michael Bozard (Janice’s favorite conversation partner); eight grandchildren, Shelby, Clayton, Bethany, Emma Grace, Carolyn, Evelyn, Abigail and Victoria; and four siblings, Judy, Joneen, Steve and Jeff.

Gene was a longtime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in DeFuniak Springs.  He served as Bishop there for 7 years, and he and his wife, Myrlene, served a year as missionaries for the Church.  He found great joy in serving in the Church – participating in activities, service opportunities, and work with the youth in the Church. Along with time spent being active in the Church, Gene treasured time with family.  He highly prioritized relationships with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  They all got to spend precious time with him enjoying the gift of the outdoors through hunting, fishing, riding horses, and just being together.    Each of his children holds special memories of outdoor adventures with their daddy, a true sportsman.  One of his sons specifically holds dear afternoons Gene spent playing catch with him in the front yard, even after a long day at work, and time shared fishing together – even though not much was ever caught!  The quality time spent sitting together during that time was priceless to his family members.  He was absolutely the best Paw Paw, and his own children are all so blessed to have gotten to see the special relationships their own children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   Gene also loved his dogs (especially bulldogs) and animals, and he passed along that tenderness toward and affection for animals to his children.  A devoted fan of Alabama football, he watched the games with fervor and always showed confidence in his team by reminding Myrlene to “Calm down.  They will be ok.”
Each of Gene’s 6 children have countless cherished memories that they will always hold dear. One shared a birthday with her dad and was considered his best birthday present ever.  Another remembers him teaching her to work on cars, picking peppers in the garden, and performing the ceremony for her marriage.  A lifelong love of racing was birthed from time Gene spent building a race car with a son.  The hours he devoted coaching their ball teams did not go unnoticed either.  Playing ball, hunting, fishing, walking, talking – being present is one of the greatest gifts he gave his children.  He was steady and strong – the oak that put everyone at peace any times things were ‘swaying and chaotic’.  He set a solid example as a hardworking and honest man who loved his family and who served the Lord. His smile will never be forgotten.  He lived the gospel, and he loved his family.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Bessie Mae Reeves, and by brothers Robert “Sleepy” Reeves, Glenn Reeves, and Wesley Reeves. He is survived by his wife, Myrlene Allen Reeves, by his 6 children: Kimberly Carroll, Howie Reeves (Melissa), Jenni Bilderback (Grant), Jason Reeves (Holly), Mindy Sherrer (Scott), and Alison Kidd (Danny), and by his 2 sisters: Elizabeth Freeman and Linda Lane (Jerry).  He also leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 38 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren – with 3 more on the way!
People who knew Gene will long remember the compassion he had for others and that he was always willing to share whatever he had.   He always made time for others and put himself last.  He was the calm in the room.  Always honest and fair with anyone he dealt with, without hesitation he would give the shirt off his back for those in need.  He was the most giving, honest, compassionate, trustworthy, and integrity-filled man most will ever meet.
He will greatly be missed by all who were blessed to call him family or friend. “Families are forever, and we are an eternal family. “
There will be a time of visitation on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 10AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Funeral service will begin at 11AM.

Jerrie Leonia Neely - January 27, 1942 - September 30, 2023

Departed: 09/30/2023 (DeFuniak Springs)
Obituary Preview: Jerrie Leonia Neely passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023. Born in Geneva County Alabama on January 27, 1942, to parents Edgar B. Whitehead, and Eva Mae Marlow, Jerrie grew up in the South with sisters Naomi, Wyonia, and Wanda. She graduated from Central High School in Phenix City and went on to college at Troy State. She married William Huel Neely, Jr on May 5, 1962. They raised their family in St. Louis, Missouri before returning down south and calling Destin, Florida home.
Jerrie started as a secretary at May Company and was promoted to Director of Corporate Services, where she began a career in facilities management. She always said, “This is my one gift. I can look at a space and tell you exactly how many people can fit in there.” Anyone who knows her will tell you she never met a stranger. This, and her “one gift”, led to a prosperous transition into sales, and eventually the start of her own company, Neely & Associates. Jerrie especially loved working with the military and spent much of her career in Commercial Facility Design and Install for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard. She was a member of Vision Church in Ft Walton Beach, belonged to the American Business Women’s Association, and served as a volunteer for the March of Dimes. Jerrie enjoyed a fulfilling career, but she would tell you her greatest accomplishment, and one true passion was her family. Having just celebrated 61 years of marriage, she will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home was the gathering place for family Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and July 4th celebrations, which created many treasured memories. Jerrie enjoyed hanging out with the great-grandchildren at the zoo, the bouncy house, or park. She was able to take the trip of a lifetime to Europe where she enjoyed the Sistine Chapel, and a romantic gondola ride through the City of Venice with her husband. Each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were blessed with hand-sewn nursery comforters, drapes, monogrammed pillows, and crocheted blankets. When a blanket was loved beyond repair, Jerrie was already busy making a replacement. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with her loved ones and her husband will always hold dear the family they shared. He says, “She joined me on a wonderful journey.”
Jerrie never met a stranger. She was generous and loving toward all and was eager to go the extra mile for family, friends, and neighbors. Extending well beyond her immediate family, Jerrie’s memory lives on in many homes in the area as she crocheted “Baby of Destiny” blankets for baby dedications at Destiny Worship Center and at Vision Church Ft. Walton Beach. She was the “baby whisperer” at Vision Church, always available in the cry room to rock, snuggle, and sing to the precious little ones.
Jerrie is preceded in death by a grandson, Zak Wilders and by her parents, Edgar B. and Eva Mae Whitehead. She is survived by her beloved husband, William Huel Neely, Jr., her children, Karen Neely, Steven Neely and his wife Mary, Michelle Wilders and her husband Rick, grandchildren, Laci Maraman, Lindsay Cunningham, Amanda Cheeley, Joshua Cawiezell, Jake Wilders, Caleb Neely, Taylor Cawiezell, and Melani Davis, sisters, Naomi Braegger, Wyonia Farner and Wanda Tumlin, and 23 great-grandchildren.
All who knew her would agree that Jerrie was a special lady. She was a blessing to her family, friends, and community. Jerrie loved well and is well loved. Her strength, caring smile, warm hugs, and sage advice will be missed. The love she poured out will not be forgotten. The life she lived will continue to be an inspiration for her family, and an ideal to be lived up to.
Donations made to Vision Church Ft Walton Beach will be forwarded to the Africa Children’s Mission in Jerrie’s name. Flowers are also being accepted.
The family will receive visitors at Destiny Worship Center in Freeport, FL on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 1:00-2:00pm.  A funeral service will begin at 2:00pm with graveside following at Magnolia Cemetery in DeFuniak Springs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It often includes details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the person's life, share memories, and offer condolences to those grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, achievements, and other personal details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be used for more prominent individuals or those with extensive accomplishments.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to learn their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may accept submissions online or via email, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or limited circulation. This might be done through a private funeral home website or by sharing the obituary only with close friends and family.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about memorial donations in lieu of flowers. This allows friends and family to make a donation in the deceased person's name instead of sending flowers.
