Mr. Traynor was a teacher in the Youngstown City Schools for over 30 years, teaching at South High School and Chaney High School.  Throughout his career, he coached baseball, basketball, track, and speech teams.  He was a well-known and loved teacher throughout the district, often being visited by former students throughout his life.  He also helped coach his children, whom he never let win (like most dads would), passing on his competitive spirit, especially during family game nights.
He was married to Mrs. Kathleen (Tyndall) Traynor for over 51 years.  They have eight children together, which will now be ranked from his favorite to least favorite starting with his favorite child Mary (Robin) Myers, his favorite son, Norman Traynor Jr., his second favorite daughter Maggie Traynor, followed by Bill (Julie Bartolone) Traynor, Cecily (Dave Ebert) Traynor, Noreen (Junior) Natal, Dolly Traynor, and Dr. Kristen (Gleb) Traynor-Mytko.  This is a well-known ranking order, and we have all come to terms with it prior to his passing. One of his favorite places on earth was Sea Isle City, New Jersey, where he and his family vacationed for over 50 years.  We have no doubt his soul will continue to walk alongside us each year on those long, hot walks by the ocean and the many trips to grab his favorite F-U-D-G-E.

Eleanor (Ellie) Gessler Russell - September 11, 1931 - February 01, 2022

Departed: 02/01/2022 (Youngstown)
Obituary Preview: NEW MIDDLETOWN—Eleanor Gessler Russell, 90, passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, at Masternick Memorial in New Middletown with her family at her side.
Mom was born in Youngstown on Friday, Sept. 11, 1931, a daughter of Sal and Frances Resatar Napolitan and was a lifelong resident of the area. She grew up in the Italian neighborhood of “Smokey Hollow”, living on Summit Ave., Scott Street, Adams and Emerald Street. Her schooling began at Madison Elementary, then Hayes Junior High and finally to The Rayen High School where she graduated in the January class of 1950 and was the secretary of her senior class.
After graduating from high school, mom joined the workforce. She landed a position in the early 50’s at Ohio Edison in the accounting department. Little did she know that this decision would change her life forever. One day at work a handsome gentleman caught the eye of this beautiful secretary, they decided to date and thus began a relationship like no other. It was full of love, romance, excitement, trust, commitment and five sons. The young man that caught mom’s attention was Len Gessler.
Dad worked in sales at Ohio Edison and he sold himself to mom. They were married on June 4, 1955. For 16 years, life in the Gessler household was a dream that came true for both mom and dad. Then the unthinkable happened, dad passed away at the age of 42 on Feb. 17, 1971. Mom was devastated and left with five little sons, but right around the corner the second love of her life began. Dad had a best friend Tom Russell, who was never married. We all knew Tom because he was always a part of our family. After dad passed, Tom and mom fell in love and they were married on Sept. 16, 1972. Once again everything was wonderful, until our stepdad Tom passed away on July 3, 1989. Again, mom lost someone who loved her and whom she loved. She always said that; “she had two men who loved her unconditionally, some women never experience one love”.
After leaving Ohio Edison to raise our family, mom returned to work. She was a waitress at the Oven Restaurant, an elevator operator at McKelvey’s Department Store downtown, as a clerk at Mill Creek Dairy and as a clerk at the Mahoning County Board of Elections. At the Board of Elections, mom was a parttime worker for over 20 years starting in the late 60’s. She was hired full time in 1989 and remained there until her retirement in 2001.
Mom was always on the go: she enjoyed dancing, bowling, shopping, swimming, being part of our activities in athletics and just about anything that involved family and friends. She loved going to casino’s and playing card with anyone who wanted to. She loved statues and pins of angels and her guy was St. Anthony. She prayed to him for help and comfort.
One of her great passions was cooking and baking. Just about every Sunday, mom would make her homemade spaghetti sauce and meatballs, she did this for over 55 years. Friday night, she would make homemade pizza and bread, the scent would fill the house. One tradition she loved came on Good Friday of Easter weekend. Mom would make ricotta cheese and macaroni pies, about 25 of them, and everyone was invited to stop over and enjoy the feast. Another tradition was baking Christmas cookies. Mom’s sister Doris and cousins Paula and Norma would take a week and bake cookies everyday for seven straight days from day till night. They would bake over 25 different varieties. It would take us months to eat them. Moms greatest joy came by loving, helping and doing things with and for others.
Mom was very proud of her catholic faith and Italian and Croatian heritage. However, her true love was all about her children and spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. Nothing in this life was more important than mom loving us and we loving her. Mom you will always be in our hearts, for after all; you taught us all how to LOVE.
Mom leaves to carry her love, her five sons: Lennie Gessler of Youngstown; Robert Gessler of Poland; Brian Gessler of Canfield; Jeff (Lorie) Gessler of Boardman and Dave (Monica) Gessler of Poland; grandchildren Aereal (Dan) Martin, Mat Gessler, Amy Gessler, Patrick (Nikki) Gessler, Brenna (Mike) Livi, Elyse Gessler, Olivia (Cody) McCullough, Gabriella Gessler and husband Dan Fernback, Madison (Kory) Kasten, Macey Gessler, Montana (Dante) Dechellis, David Gessler, Dean Gessler, 13 great-grandchildren; brother-in- law John Mikovich and sister-in-law Lilla Napolitan and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, sister, Doris Mikovich, brother, Raymond Napolitan, nephews: John Mikovich Jr. and Ronald Napolitan; special cousins Paula Dellick, John Zelinsky and Norma Alexander.
Family and friends can show their love to mom from 2-5pm at St. Brendan Church on Sunday, Feb. 6 and from 10-10:45 on Monday, Feb. 7, at St. Brendan Church followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am Celebrated by Reverend Father Kevin Peters. Family requests in lieu of flowers donation made be made to MVI Hospice Care, 4891 Belmont Ave., Yo., 44505 or to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield, 44406 We would love to thank Dr. Santuccio Ricciardi, for his care and compassion extended to mom and to the staff of Masternick Memorial, where mom spent almost seven years. Their love, care, compassion and patience with mom was amazing, our family will never forget you. As you called her “Our Ellie.” Thoughts and condolences maybe expressed to our family at the funeral home website www.mccauleyfuneral.com

Martha Whelan Murphy - August 24, 1920 - January 12, 2022

Departed: 01/12/2022 (Youngstown)
Obituary Preview: MARTHA WHELAN MURPHY 1920-2022
After an epic and well-lived life, Martha Ann Whelan Murphy was peacefully called into eternity on January 12, 2022 surrounded by the love of her family.
Martha was the youngest of four children of Raymond E. Whelan MD and surgical nurse Margaret Gallagher Whelan, born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 24, 1920 and raised at 620 Belmont Avenue (now Dorothy Day House), just blocks from Saint Elizabeth Hospital, which Dr. Whelan helped to found and organize as the first Chief of the medical staff. A true “convent-educated” Catholic, Martha graduated from the Ursuline Academy in 1933, Villa Maria High School in 1937, and Seton Hill College in 1941. The Ursulines, Humility of Mary Sisters, and Sisters of Charity all left a deep impression on the young Martha Whelan, instilling values of faith and aspiring intellect which served her devoted heart and keen mind well throughout her long, accomplished life of 101 years.
Martha married Attorney Robert M. Murphy of Youngstown on October 4, 1947. Together the Murphys raised five children, four boys and one girl on the north side, first on New York Avenue and later on Selma Avenue. Martha’s husband, Bob, was a founding partner in 1959 of the prominent labor law firm Green, Schiavoni, Murphy, Haines, Sgambati, LLC. Mrs. Murphy pursued a number of community interests during her child rearing years in the 1950’s and 60’s, including her service as president of the Mahoning County Bar Auxiliary, president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and, with her husband, as a counselor of engaged young people in Pre-Cana. Even before her marriage, Martha was making a difference in the lives of God’s poor as a Catholic social worker. She took graduate courses at The Ohio State University in the fall of 1941 before accepting a job with Cleveland Catholic Service League in 1942. When the new Catholic Diocese of Youngstown was founded in May of 1943, at the age of 22, Martha became field director for Portage County Catholic Charities, founding an office in Ravenna and establishing an advisory board. She worked closely with the clergy and religious of Portage County, finding time to use her keyboard talents to play piano/organ for parish and school masses
After her first volunteer career concluded in 1969 with the younger Murphy children well along in their educations at St. Edward School and Ursuline High School, Martha returned to her roots in social work, beginning a three-year stint as Assistant to the Director of Catholic Charities in the Chancery office of downtown Youngstown. Her thoughtful work with programming centered on the elderly for the Diocese caught the eye of Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter in 1972, who asked Mrs. Murphy to establish a pilot program for senior citizens services for the city. Mrs. Murphy’s administrative abilities were well-recognized at the state level. When establishing the Ohio Area Agencies on Aging, with substantial program and personnel budget increases accompanying the new social services network, it was Martha Murphy who was chosen by state officials to build from the ground up the four-county District 11 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. Mrs. Murphy served as founding Executive Director of the Agency from 1975-1991. She also served as elected Midwest region delegate to the National Board of Area Agencies on Aging and chaired the national convention in the early 1980’s.
In her 60’s, Martha returned to graduate school as a candidate for a Master’s of Social Administration Degree from Mandel School at Case Western Reserve University. Something of a sensation on campus as a non-traditional student, Mrs. Murphy received her MSSA with distinction in 1985. Her agency, District 11, continued to flourish in the final years before her retirement in June of 1991, creating model programs to allow elderly individuals to remain at home with supportive services, including at home meals, home aides, transportation, and access to senior citizen centers for social engagement. Mrs. Murphy’s efforts on behalf of the elderly in Ohio earned her a place in the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, where her picture is displayed at the state fairgrounds.
Other notable honors bestowed upon Martha for her life’s work include Seton Hill University’s Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award and the National Association of Social Workers Distinguished Service Award.
Upon her professional retirement, Mrs. Murphy turned her attention to an ever-growing family of grandchildren (14) and great-grandchildren (now 19 and counting). She became a Master Gardener for the Davis Education and Visitor Center at Mill Creek Park, acting for years as a volunteer horticultural resource at its library. She dedicated many hours even into her mid 90’s as a ribbon bow maker for the Fall/Christmas decorations on the grounds of Fellows Riverside Gardens and Lanterman’s Mill. She loved gardening and sharing ideas with other avid gardeners. She also organized (and dominated) her bridge groups at YCC, enjoying golf and travel.
Mrs. Murphy leaves her five children: R. Terrence (Mickee) Murphy of Ravenna. Ohio; Mary Eileen (Judge Patrick) Cunning of Campbell, Ohio; Reverend Richard Murphy, President of Ursuline High School and Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, Mineral Ridge and St. Stephen Catholic Church, Niles; James B. (Christie) Murphy of Wyoming, Ohio; and Kevin M. (Theresa) Murphy of Cortland, Ohio.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband in 1994, her sisters, Dorothy Fannon and Margaret Mary Kirk, and her brother, Robert Whelan.
“Grammy, ” “Aunt Martha” and of course “Mom” will forever occupy a huge place in the hearts of a clan which loved her dearly as she loved all of them.
Martha Murphy will be celebrated in faith with calling hours from 2:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.  at her long-time parish of St. Edward in Youngstown, on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Bishop David Bonnar will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial set for 5:00 p.m. on Monday.  A private family burial service will take place at Calvary Cemetery the following day.
The family and funeral home mandate that all people attending callings hours and/or the funeral must wear a mask or facial covering to enter the church and maintain social distancing in regards to the COVID 19 pandemic. There are many appropriate charitable courses which would give due honor to Martha Murphy’s expansive values and visions. But two places for memorial donations (in lieu of flowers) are especially supportive of her wishes and her family’s: The Robert and Martha W. Murphy Scholarship
c/o Ursuline High School Endowment Fund, Inc. 750 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio 44505 and/or The Dr. Raymond E. Whelan Legacy Society c/o Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley 250 DeBartolo Place #2560, Youngstown, Ohio 44512
The Murphy family expresses its deep gratitude for Martha’s quality medical care in these last months and days, particularly the late Dr. Gregory Zinni and his family practice group, Dr. Cynthia Kravec of Mercy Health, mom’s dedicated nurses Diane, Kim, Millie, Caitlin and Theresa from within our family. You all are ever in our hearts. The final support provided by the team at Mercy Hospice House is also deeply appreciated. In all her years, Martha W. Murphy embodied the personal motto of her favorite Saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton: “Hazard Yet Forward.” May we who survive her, and cherish her, do the same.

Patricia A. Hartwig - September 14, 1926 - December 26, 2021

Departed: 12/26/2021 (Youngstown)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Anne Joyce Hartwig was born September 14, 1926, in Sharon, PA. The only child of Thomas and Nell Joyce, who gifted her with the first sacrament of her Roman Catholic faith on September 26, 1926. On that day, at Sacred Heart Church, she died with Christ in the waters of Baptism. After a 95-year earthly journey of authentic, inspiring faith, on December 26, 2021 (The Solemnity of the Holy Family) Patricia began her rise with Christ to new and eternal life – surrounded by the love of her family.
At a very young age, after her father’s sudden passing, she and her mother moved to Leetonia, then eventually made Youngstown, OH home. “Patsy” spent her childhood enjoying athletics more than dolls – riding bikes and playing sports all summer, sledding and ice skating all winter. She attended Ursuline Academy and St. Edward Elementary School. She earned an academic scholarship to Villa Maria High School, then on to St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She became a Registered Nurse in 1947, enjoying a meaningful career at St. Elizabeth Hospital and later Commercial Shearing – selflessly and compassionately serving the medical needs of others for over 60 years. At the age of 23, Pat met the love of her life, “Babe”, as they crossed paths at the Palace Theater. They went on their first date in April of 1949, celebrated marriage vows at St. Patrick’s Church on August 5, 1950, and spent every day honoring their vows with joy. Together they built a family of faith and love, raising their eight children to live the teachings of the faith, by modeling it in their own lives every day. After losing her husband suddenly and too soon in 1981, Pat modeled her faith even more profoundly. Throughout her life, no matter the struggle or challenge, Pat’s positivity persevered, and her level of faith increased. She enjoyed travel, especially Chicago, Michigan City and her extended trips to her family in Tampa, Florida. Even into her later years, Pat continued her voracity for reading, playing golf, gathering with the gals for bridge, an occasional high ball, wheel of fortune, jeopardy, words with friends, card games (especially Skip-Bo), board games, crossword puzzles, outdoor walking and any time spent with family. She remained a daily Mass goer and a fierce prayer warrior her entire life. She had a sincere, humble devotion to the Blessed Mother, wearing out many sets of rosary beads along the way. While her chicken salad and brownies were always famous in the neighborhood, it was her wide-open welcoming door and heart that drew so many to her. Once you entered her heart, you were captured there forever. How blessed are so many to claim that prize! Besides her faith, nothing was dearer to Pat than family. Among those she now joins are her parents, her beloved husband Warren “Babe” Hartwig, children Tom, Mary, John Hartwig, and son-in-law Jerry Resatar. Pat is among the very last of a large and close-knit group of girlfriends to enter Heaven. A beautiful reunion is about to take place!
She leaves to cherish her life and honor her legacy her children Bob, Bill, Patty Resatar, Paul (Pam Scharrer), Susie and Rich Sferra; grandchildren Brian (KerriAnn) Hartwig, Stacy (John) Best, Cathi (Chuck) Christopher, Matthew (Alesha) Resatar, Johnny (Courtney) Hartwig, P.J., Jason, Kati Hartwig, Anthony and Audrey Sferra; great-grandchildren Zane Hartwig, Arya and Mahlon Best, Cody, Tyler and Ava Christopher, Emily Resatar. Pat also leaves many nieces, nephews, countless friends and relatives with treasured memories.
Visitation will take place at 10:00AM Thursday December 30 at St. Edward Roman Catholic Church. The Most Reverend Monsignor Robert Siffrin will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
