Obituary Preview: Mr. Ray Leon Simpson, 86 of Quitman passed away Friday, April 22, 2022 at his residence. Mr. Simpson was born September 28, 1935 to the late W. Ray & Eula Lee Dasher Simpson. He was a member of Welcome Hill Church of Christ and was faithful on going to church. He loved his family and was a kind, sweet, and a very good man.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Patricia Lunette Coody Simpson of Quitman; daughters, Tina Simpson Cox of Quitman, and Lita Dawn Simpson of TX; grandchildren, Theresa Lee Cox Duncil (Jeff Duncil) of MI, and Tara Lynn Cox of Quitman; great grandson, Waylon Cox; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; sisters in law, Vanelle Williams of Quitman, Jeanette Cooper of Evans Ga, Kay Coody & brother in law, Ronald Coody of Quitman, and brother in law, Bruce Roberts of Valdosta; and his friend, Wallace Turner of Quitman. Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Simpson.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April, 24, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Welcome Hill Church of Christ with Minister Jerry Herring, and Minister Mike Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He was born July 19, 1930 in Pelham, GA to the late Charlie Arthur & Beulah Shiver Busby. Mr. Busby served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the Destroyer USS Wedderburn. He was a member of Welcome Hill Church of Christ, and he loved his church, family and his wife, Frances Busby. Mr. Busby enjoyed fishing and growing his award winning daylilies, which he was a member of the Valdosta Daylily Club. He retired after many years from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an insurance salesman and Quitman Housing Authority.
Survivors include his children, Ken (Renee) Busby of Valdosta, and Kim (Dale) Rowell of Valdosta; grandchildren, Jennifer (Steven) Parrish of Hahira, Kenny (Brittanie) Busby of Lake Park, and Dakota Rowell of Valdosta; great grandchildren, Allie Parrish of Hahira, Abbie Parrish of Hahira, Hunter Busby of Lake Park, and Ansley Busby of Lake Park; and two sisters, Joyce Fuller of Tallahassee, and Dora Jean Busby of Jacksonville, FL. Obituary Preview: Barry Carter Owens, 72 of Quitman passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born January 18, 1950 in Haysi, Virginia to the late Garmon & Lucy Deel Owens. He was of the Baptist Faith and had retired as a truck driver. Barry loved riding on his motorcycle and in 1997 he became a member of the GA Gold Wing Road Riders Association. For about 25 years, he was the chapter director for Chapter O in Tifton. Barry was the state assistant director for GWRRA for the state of Georgia for 8 years. He was also an education instructor for the State of Georgia, and he always promoted safety.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Dixon Owens of Quitman; stepbrothers, Greg Ellerbee of Atlanta, and Al Ellerbee of Ashburn; several nieces & nephews from Brunswick, Texas, and Tampa, FL. Barry was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnny Lee Owens, and Mark Owens; and his stepfather, T. B. Ellerbee.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Maxwell – Purvis Funeral Home with Rev. Arnold Hodum officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery in Moultrie. The family will be receiving friends from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jean Failing - September 05, 1923 - April 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jean M. Failing, recently of Quitman, GA, and previously of Miles City MT, died Wednesday, April 6, 2022.  She was born Sept. 5, 1923, in Verdigre, NE, the daughter of Albert and Adella Pischel Barta.  As a young girl, she moved with her parents to a ranch near Buffalo Gap, SD, where she attended a one-room country school through the eighth grade.  She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1941 and from MacMurray Women’s College in Jacksonville, IL, in 1945.
After graduation, Jean was employed by the Illinois Civil Service commission in the field of public personnel administration.  In 1948, she and Charles K. Failing (Bud) of Indianapolis were married, and, a year later, they moved to Buffalo Gap, South Dakota, to join the family ranching business where they lived and worked until 1959.  At that time, the family ranch corporation known as A. J. Barta and Sons expanded to include a ranch near Miles City, Montana.  Bud, Jean and their children (Krieg and Susan) were sent to Montana to take care of the cows and to manage the new ranch.
In 1973, in accordance with long-range plans, the Failing’s assumed ownership of the Montana property which they operated as The Failings, Inc., for the next seventeen years.  Jean acted as the Secretary/Treasurer of the corporation.  They sold the corporation in 1990 and retired to live in Miles City and to travel the world.
After living in Montana for fifty years, at the urging of their children, Jean and Charles moved to Quitman, GA, in 2009 where they have enjoyed the comforts, care and friendships offered by the Presbyterian Retirement Community. During her lifetime, Mrs. Failing was an avid reader, and was an advocate for quality education.
Mrs. Failing was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, John Barta, and is survived by her son, Krieg Failing (Ann) of Centennial, CO, her daughter, Susan Whitson (Steve) of Monticello, FL, and her grandchildren, Katherine Richardson (Joseph), Margaret Andrews (Matt), and Shane Whitson.

Jane was born March 16, 1937 in Quitman, GA to John Avera and Mary Eliza Collins. Jane, "Grandma Jane" as she was known by many, was a lifelong resident of Brooks County. Jane retired from Brooks County School system, and began her service to the county working in the Tag Office for many years. Jane loved cooking, shopping, spending time in the mountains of North Ga and Tennessee watching the leaves turn each fall. Her biggest enjoyment came from travels with her late husband, Remer, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Remer C. Edmondson; sisters, Joan Folsom, Mary Hancock, Helen Grubbs, Mattie Miller, Ruth Miller; and brothers, Hubert Miller, Jack Collins, Ralph Collins, and Bobby Collins.

Thomas Jackson Barrs, III - October 08, 1951 - March 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: Thomas Jackson Barrs III, age 70, of Quitman (Brooks County), Georgia, passed away in Stone Mountain unexpectedly on March 7, 2022. He was born on October 8, 1951. He spent his childhood in South Georgia and moved to Atlanta to attend graduate school after college but still visited his mother and sister in Quitman on a weekly basis.
Thomas was born to Lois Lee Sims and Thomas Jackson Barrs, Jr. He was the older child of two and has a sister, Betty Lee Barrs-Medina who lives in both Dixie, Georgia and Hialeah, Florida. He and his best friend and former wife, Madeleine Benko Barrs, originally born in Casablanca, Morocco but currently living in Madison, Alabama, were also extremely close from the moment they met until the moment of his death. He was also the proud owner of two cats, Belinda and Kiwi, who will now be residing with family in Alabama.
He was a deeply spiritual and religious man who lived life consciously and mindfully, in a manner consistent with his core values of goodness, decency, community service, love, and kindness. God, family and service to others were central in his life-and all who knew him knew this to be true. Thomas was an extremely resilient and growth-oriented person who was constantly striving to be the best he could be for himself and others. He was a creature of habit and walked five miles around Stone Mountain every day for many years. From birth, Thomas attended First Baptist Church Quitman, where he was baptized in April 1963. In his later years, he was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Atlanta. He still attended church in Quitman almost every week when he visited his mother, Lois.
Thomas was a well-educated man and an active seeker of knowledge and truth throughout his life. He obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University College of Pharmacy, a Master of Divinity from Emory University and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Valdosta State University. He worked as a pharmacist for most of his adult life and thoroughly enjoyed his career. He also obtained a certificate in Jungian Psychoanalysis later in life, further demonstrating his deep desire and commitment to personal growth and insight.
Thomas’ father passed away in 2012. Survivors include his mother, Lois Lee Sims Barrs, and his sister, Betty Lee Barrs Medina (Alex Medina), his eldest daughter, Kathryn “Katy” Lee Barrs Allen (Patrick Allen) and one grandson, Jackson Paul Allen of Denver, CO; and, his youngest daughter, Nicola Plowman of Los Angeles, CA. Other family loved ones include his niece, Adrienne Lee Guerra (Richard) and their 3 children Aly Lee Guerra, Richard Jackson Guerra and Ruben Adrien Guerra of Hollywood, FL; and nephew, Alexander Christian Medina of Tallahassee, FL.
He is also survived by Madeleine Benko Barrs, his former wife and current best friend, along with her children Adriana Carolina Barrios and Alejandro Barrios Benko. Adriana is married to Omar Joel Sosa and they have three daughters, Sophia Elena Sosa, Michelle Alessandra Sosa and Leah Madeleine Sosa. Alejandro is married to Anna Barrios and they have two sons, Alejandro E. Barrios and Christian E. Barrios. Close family friends, Orlando and Ofelia Vargas, along with their son Marco Morales, were also a part of the family. Thomas was also survived by his first wife, Susan Hobbs Dods (mother of Katy Barrs) of Valdosta, Georgia.
Other beloved extended family include the family of Robert and Kathryn Fender, both deceased, and their 3 sons, Rusty, Jeff and Dana, along with their wives, children and grandchildren.

She was such a shining light to everyone. Kristen could walk in a room and her smile just lit up the space. She loved the beach and the sun and her animals loved to go to the beach with her. Kristen loved to visit restaurants with great seafood. She enjoyed eating with her family and friends.
Kristen had such a kind, giving, loving heart for everyone and each of God’s creatures. Her fur babies, her children, Ricki, Muffin, Chloe, and Boots gave her such unconditional love. Part of her nightly routine was to put their pajamas on them for bed. Kristen always dressed them for the special holidays.
Kristen had such an amazing personality, that even having met her created such lasting friendships. God blessed us with our precious gift and we will continue to carry her sweet spirit with us each and every day of our lives.
Survivors include her husband, Brandon Barker of Shalimar, Fl; mother, Tina Radney of Quitman; father Timmy (Sandra) Radney of Morven; paternal grandmother, Betty Jean Moon of Bowman, GA; maternal grandparents, Billy (Connie) Ingram of Quitman; mother in law, Cheryl (Mark) Wallace; and father in law, Danny (Susannah) Barker. Kristen was preceded in death by her grandfather, Charles Doyle Moon; great grandparents, Lowell & Betty Radney; and uncle James Randy Croft.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Morven Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Shierling, and Pastor Ray Copeland officiating. Interment will follow at Campground Cemetery with Rev. Jim Pitt officiating. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Serving as active pallbearers are, Scoot Spencer, Everett Ingram, Robert Ingram, Will Spencer, Justin Layton, Jacob Layton, and Patrick Ingram. Honorary pallbearers are George Yeomans and Tony Watson.

Beth Belflower - March 22, 1939 - February 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: The family of Nona Elizabeth (Beth) Davis Belflower announces her death on February 19, 2022, at the age of 82. She was born March 22, 1939, in Cordele, Georgia, to Robert H. and Violet Webb Davis. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Robert (Bob) Davis. Beth is survived by her husband of 60 years Estol R. Belflower, sister Sidney Lee Davis Kimbrough, sister-in-law Janet Belflower Hegenderfer (Don), and numerous nieces and nephews, and her special friend Laverne Bell.
Beth grew up in South Georgia and graduated from Albany (GA) High School in 1957. She earned her undergraduate degree from Oglethorpe University in 1961. Immediately following her college graduation, she married Estol Belflower and joined him in Augusta. They lived there until Estol received his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Their next move was to Alaska with the United States Air Force. After completion of Estol's tour of duty, they remained in Alaska for 50 years.
Beth began her career as a librarian at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska in 1966. Upon their move to Juneau, Estol practiced radiology, and Beth was employed for 17 years at the Juneau-Douglas High School, retiring in 1989. She was an active member of Chapel by the Lake in Juneau and volunteered in the church library for 23 years.
Since both Estol and Beth were avid birders, it was only natural for her to volunteer at the Juneau Raptor Center and promote enthusiasm among young birders in the community. Their love of flying took them to many interesting points, often remote, throughout Alaska and the Lower 48 in their Piper Super Cub.
A celebration of Beth's life will be announced at a later date.. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Boys and Girls Club, P.O. Box 588, Quitman, Georgia 31643.

His passion was his family, friends, and anything to do with the outdoors. Rock served many years as a correction officer at the Valdosta State Prison, a heavy equipment operator at City of Valdosta, and parts supervisor at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Quitman. Survivors include his mother, Sandra Rothrock of Hahira; daughters, Brooke Rothrock of Hahira, and Christina Rothrock of Hahira; brother, Jeff (Becky) Rothrock of Quitman; nephews, Jacob Rothrock, and Gavin Hersey; special aunts, Carolyn Minton, and Donna Wood; former spouse, Ginger Griner of Hahira; and his special dog, Belle. Rock was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Alden Rothrock Sr. A celebration of life will be held Friday, February 18, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Elam Community Baptist Church on Grooverville Rd., Quitman with Rev. Mrs. Hanner was born August 17, 1948 to the parents, Cecil & Annie Hysmith in Douglas, GA. She was known as Grannie by all her grandchildren. Mrs. Hanner enjoyed singing in the choir at Hickory Head Baptist Church in Quitman, and enjoyed singing at The Vision Church in Valdosta and at Morven Baptist Church. Grannie especially loved working in the summer time at Lawson Peach Shed, where she made peach ice cream and peach lemonade and loved her customers.

Mrs. Hanner was preceded in death by her son, James "T-Toe" Hanner.

Jana is survived by her three children, Leslie (Austin) Nichols of Barwick, Luke Grantham of Quitman, Jessica (Ryan) Pollock of Moultrie; grandchildren Elizabeth Nichols, Hunter Nichols, James Grantham, Kadance Grantham, Hailey Grantham, Keighley Purcell, Brianna Pollock, Bailey Pollock, Lola Pollock, Lilly Pollock, and Devon Harvey; her parents Jim and Janice Jamison; her brother Jon - Mark (Lisa) Jamison and niece Holly (Matt) Gavin. Jana was preceded in death by her older brother Jamie Jamison.
