Hazel Louise Ring - May 06, 1933 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Owen)
Obituary Preview: Hazel Louise Ring (Benson, Marrier) at age 90, passed away on April 2, 2024, peacefully at her home surrounded by loving family. Hazel was born May 6, 1933 to parents Amiel and Ethel Benson.
She graduated from Bruce High School and later in life completed an Associates Degree at an Eau Claire Technical School. From there she went on to join the Wicks Lumber Company in Eau Claire. She started as an in store employee but soon worked her way to being the first woman to work outside sales in the history of this national company. She was recognized early for her strong work ethic and tenacity. As a new Wick’s rep she encountered a contractor who refused to come off a roof to talk with her so she climbed the ladder to meet him there. He went on to be her best customer. Soon after joining the sales team she bet the CEO 25 silver dollars that she could sell one million dollars of product. She reached her goal as the first and only woman to achieve this level of success. Four members of the national executive team flew from Detroit to Eau Claire to pay off the bet and honor her at a company banquet.
Hazel came out of retirement at age 65 to join her son Scott’s company, Trophy Trailers, as a receptionist. She quickly advanced to be their purchasing agent and was well known for her negotiation skills. For the final 15 years she headed the sales department, working until the young age of 88 and loving every minute, especially the friendships she developed with her dealers.
Earlier in life she was co-owner, along with her good friend, Tootie Bonk (Mueller) of the Withee Mercantile store. Following that she was owner of the “Hayloft” in Withee where she was famous for her delicious barbecue and hot beef sandwiches.
In addition to Hazel’s love of family and loyalty to friends, she had many passions. She was a master quilter with her award winning quilts being displayed in many shows. Hazel was known to donate lovely quilts to raffles to raise funds for worthy causes. This included one that raised $6000 for a new organ for St.Katherine’s church. She was also a fanatical gardener where countless hours of care yielded the most beautiful flower beds and a highly productive vegetable garden which resulted in countless preserves she shared with family. Her pickles were the family favorite. Hazel’s competitive nature carried over into the family tradition of playing cards well into the night at every gathering. She rarely lost.
Hazel’s passion for helping others led her to many charitable activities involving St. Katherine’s church of Owen where she was a lifelong member. Her efforts multiplied once her husband Rev. Anthony Ring became the church pastor. She inspired and organized a group of local women to make quilts for the homeless with a focus on veterans. This group is credited with making and donating 2885 quilts. Hazel worked tirelessly with other church women to support activities for the community. That included an annual free thanksgiving dinner and monthly soup and sandwich meals. Hazel and the church women (ECW) also started an annual “Christmas Cookie Walk” which continues to fill the cookie jars of the community today.
Hazel was also a passionate supporter of the “Hand’s Foundation” tirelessly raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the groups two focus missions: the "Save St. Hedwig Project” in Thorp Wisconsin, and “Every Third Saturday” (ETS), a non-profit organization committed to helping homeless and at risk veterans. Visit the ETS website if you would like to help in Hazel’s honor: everythirdsaturday.net.
Hazel is survived by husband Rev. Anthony Ring. Hazel and Tony married October 18, 1980. Hazel is also survived by her children Scott Marrier (Debbie), Dawn Auclair, Kurt Marrier; grandchildren Shauna Johnson (Christian), Darrell Marrier (Nicole), Chauncey Marrier (Melissa Miller), Travis Auclair (Elise Velasco), Tyler Auclair (Kaylee); great-grandchildren Elijah, Mikayla, Antonina, and Amara Kostick, Warren, Ava, and Emma Marrier, Rebelle Velasco, Palmer and Baker Auclair; great-great-grandchildren Will, EJ, Vigo and Aleks. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents Amiel and Ethel Benson; siblings Burt, Don, Jim. Lillian and Marge; and her beloved son-in-law Fred Auclair. Hazel is also preceded in death by her first husband, Darrell Marrier and his parents Chauncey and Ann.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Riverside Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice, both for their kind and compassionate care. A special thank you to RN Kati Kunhart at Riverside for giving Hazel and Tony a loving home; Hospice RN Breanna Schuld who went way above meeting Hazel’s needs including giving her a lovely manicure; And to Chaplain Jeffrey Ahonen whose musical visits Hazel so enjoyed.
Hazel will be laid to rest on Saturday June 1, 2024. Visitation from 10-12, with funeral service at 12:00 at St Katherine’s Church, 206 E 3rd St Owen WI 54460.

She had four living brothers, plus one that died as a baby. She was the little girl that her family wanted. However, a few days after her birth, her mother died. Soon she was adopted by Frank and Anna Frances Hoffman. Frank was a farmer; he was also teaching school where the two oldest Hoffeditz sons were attending, so they knew of the heartbreak the family felt. Frank and his wife had one grown son F. DeWitt, so they all agreed to give this new baby a home. They changed her name to Lois DeWitt and gave her the middle name of Audrey.
DeWitt later moved back to Iowa, where the family was originally from, and when Lois was seven years old, her mother died. When Lois was in the 6th grade, the family moved to Iowa, living on an adjoining farm of DeWitt’s and his wife Marion.
Lois graduated from Maynard High School in 1947; she attended college in Cedar Falls, and taught school for one year. She did several other things in her younger years, such as being a nanny in OakPark, Il, working in a radio factory. She also worked in a hospital, in the obstetrics section and working as a housekeeper. While working in a factory, she was required to provide a birth certificate to prove her American citizenship. It was then they found out for a certainty, that she was adopted. She met two of her birth brothers, who had also been adopted and in a trip back to Wisconsin to visit them, she met her husband-to-be, Stephen Rued.
When Lois was working as the second cook in Western Home, Cedar Falls, Iowa, she and Steve were married on Dec, 6, 1957, in the chapel there, by the Rev. Dr. Ward B. Tarr. And so she came back to Wisconsin, to spend the rest of her life. She and Steve had one son, Alan David. After Allen was school age, Lois went to work as a laundress at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen. From there she transferred to the Frederick Post Company, which became Teledyne, and from there she retired. She also helped on the farm, in the fields and in the barn. She always had cats that she loved and a dog that was always part of the family too. Steve passed away on Friday, April 13, 2012, after 54 years with Lois. She went to join him on December 10, 2023.

He would often tell childhood stories of exploring the outdoors, bird hunting and swimming in the river out to the island. He loved playing baseball and basketball, being with family and friends and playing a good prank on his siblings or mom. He graduated from Merrill High School on May 26, 1960. It is there he met the love of his life, Wanda Jean Krueger, and they were married on Oct. 6, 1962.
Shortly after the wedding, Phil left for Air Force basic training. Afterwards, Phil and Wanda moved to Texas and lived on base while he served. After a short stint, Phil and Wanda returned to Merrill. Their journey together found them also living in Waupaca and Wausau. Phil was a loving, dedicated husband and took care of Wanda through many illnesses. Shortly after Wanda passed on August 18, 2008, Phil moved to Owen to be with his family.
Phil loved working with and getting to know people. He had many jobs as a kid, creating his hard work ethic, but as an adult, he started working as a meat cutter and eventually was co-owner of a grocery store. For most of his career, he worked in sales. He was a successful salesman, known for his friendly personality and trustworthy customer service. He started out by selling insurance and as a Phillips Liquor Distributor. He worked for a short time at Wausau Paper Mill where he learned about the mechanical process there. He then took that knowledge and his sales experience to work for Able Distributing of Wausau and later for Mechanical Supply out of Escanaba, MI. He ended his working years in another customer service role at Sir Speedy in Wausau.
In 1968, while living in Wausau, Phil and Wanda had their daughter Kay Lynn. He was a loving and caring dad who was active in her life. He had been her Sunday School teacher and bowling coach. He shared his love of the outdoors taking her camping and teaching her how to fish. He passed on his love of grilling and taking the back roads.
His family grew more when Kay Lynn (Benzinger) married Paul Heggemeier Sr. of Owen. He was later blessed with 6 grandchildren Heather Rae (Ben) Pedersen of Eau Claire, Tiffany of Owen, Emily of Allenton, Stephany of Chippewa Falls, PJ of Altoona and Benjamin of Eau Claire. He passed away with joy in his heart, knowing a great grandson was on the way. He loved being a grandpa. He was always available for sleepovers and adventures. He was their biggest fan coming to as many sporting events and performances as possible.
You might have known him as Phil, PJ, Benny, Mr. B, Grandpa B. or Schlop. But if you knew him, you knew of his big smile and warm personality. He was loved and will be dearly missed by many.

John E Larson - October 10, 1951 - August 09, 2023

Departed: 08/09/2023 (Owen)
Obituary Preview: John E. Larson, 71, of Cocoa, FL passed away unexpectedly on August 9, 2023. John was born in Withee, Wisconsin on October 10, 1951 to James and Lillian Larson and grew up on a small dairy farm where his strong work ethic was formed. In 1969, he graduated from Owen-Withee High School after which he joined the Navy. During his service career, he attended Aviation Electronics School and had applied training in aircraft maintenance. He was honorably discharged in 1973.
While stationed at Quonset Point Naval Air Base in Rhode Island, he participated in a naval apprentice program at Razee Motorcycle Center where he formed a friendship with his future wife Ruth Gobeille. They were married in June of 1974 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee, WI and then settled in the Owen-Withee area. Being an avid outdoorsman – fishing and hunting, both gun and bow – John was very active in the early years of the Black River Sportsman’s Club and helped build the current clubhouse. During this time, John worked at Mundt Jeep and Marine, Stetsonville, WI where he became the service manager in addition to working as a mechanic. At this time, he also began attending Evinrude certification classes.
As a result of these classes he developed expertise and obtained certification for repairing Evinrude motors. In 1987, John and Ruth moved to Florida where he interviewed for a mechanic position at Evinrude dealerships in both Miami and Cocoa Beach. He ultimately took a position with Beach Marine in Cocoa Beach. After working there a couple of years, he formed a partnership with Maureen Stephens to create Beach Marine Service Center (BMSC), which provided sales and repair service for Evinrude motors in Port Canaveral and the surrounding area.
BMSC was initially located across from the Port Canaveral public boat landing and John quickly earned a reputation with charter fishing boat captains, weekend boaters and Coast Guard captains who had launched but then discovered that their boat motors wouldn’t run. Tool bag in hand, he would walk down to the launch area and work there to get the motors running and everyone out on the water. By continually participating in training programs, he obtained Evinrude’s highest possible certification, that of Master Technician. Furthermore, BMSC maintained Platinum Certification from BRP (who bought Johnson and Evinrude in 2001 from OMC) through 2020. More importantly, he found his Florida “family and friends”, who appreciated his honesty and his expertise.
Many have said that the service was not fast, but “knew the motor would work properly when I got it back!” Although he could usually be found at the “shop”, John also enjoyed playing tennis and mountain bike trail riding.
John is survived by his siblings: Mark (Judy) of Withee, Wisconsin, Philip (Darlene) of Oelwein, Iowa, Carol (Bob Palumbo) of Duluth, Minnesota, nieces and nephews: Leah (Korey O’Brien), Stacy (Scott Fink), Tony (Stephanie), Bradley (Sarah), Daniel (Jennifer) as well as grand nieces and nephews, his Florida “family” and many friends.
John’s family will host a visitation at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. with a service by Rev. Phil Beukema following. Committal will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Withee, Wisconsin immediately thereafter. There will be a luncheon at the Black River Sportsman’s Club, Withee, Wisconsin following committal. Please come and share in John’s celebration of life.
The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Abbotsford and Owen, Wisconsin is assisting the family.
