Allyson L. Koteski - February 20, 1972 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Plum)
Obituary Preview: Thursday morning, February 8, 2024, Allyson L. Koteski, age 51 of Plum Borough passed away peacefully with her family at her side after a two-year battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Rena Lynn (Hursh) Koteski and is survived by her brothers and sister, Jon Koteski (Carmen Lee), Wesley Koteski (Jennifer Bombach) and Rena Lynn Koteski (Dave Shbilla).
Allyson will always be remembered for her smile and loving way of life.  She continually thought more of others than herself.  Even during her final weeks her primary focus was not on herself, but on the preparations needed to make the transition easier for her family, especially for her nieces and nephews, Clara, Lucy, Grace, Molly, Lincoln, Anika and Octavius. When she wasn't spending time with her family, she could always be found traveling the world with friends, reading a good book or watching a cooking show.  After graduating from Hiram College with a dual degree in International Economics and Management, she began working for Toys R' Us in their management trainee program.  This led to various assignments and projects across the country and made her the "favorite aunt" during holidays.  She always had access to those hard-to-find toys!
Wanting to come back to Pittsburgh to help with the care of her parents, she accepted a senior position at Phipps Conservatory.  This resulted in a newfound love of nature, flowers and botany.  At every chance she encouraged people to visit the gardens, especially during the dreary depths of the Pittsburgh winters.
Even though she lived what appeared to be a humble life she was always searching for the next adventure.  She has skied the Alps, gone on Safari in Africa and swam the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean.  She has floated the rivers of Venice, walked the "Old Course" in Scotland, and sunbathed on the beaches of Australia.  She has trekked thousand-year-old glaciers, walked the desert on different continents, and has had coffee under the Eiffel Tower.
Ally never shied away from adventure.  For her, the best part of life was the experiences created with family and friends, including the simple trips she would take with her nieces and nephews to Hershey Park, Kennywood and Lake Erie.  These memories will always be cherished by those who have traveled with her.
Now that her battle is over, she probably has a map in front of her with bags packed preparing for the next trip, probably somewhere with a palm tree.  Her smile, kindness, and love for life will be missed, especially by those who knew her as a sister, aunt, friend or co-worker...until we meet again Ally, keep traveling and give Mom and Dad a hug for us!  Your joy and love will always be remembered.
Family and friends will be received 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15th at Maurice L. Knee, Ltd. Funeral Home, 7663 Saltsburg Rd., Plum, PA 15239.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Januarius R. C. Church of Holy Family Parish and interment will follow in Plum Creek Cemetery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and provide a visual representation of the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

Contact the publication directly to find out their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Some publications may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most publications charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want it to be.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute to the person's life.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person being remembered. Including humorous anecdotes or personal touches can make the obituary more engaging and celebratory.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details about the person's life that you'd rather not share publicly, it's best to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that an obituary is meant to be a celebration of their life, not an exposé.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the person being remembered can add depth and emotion to the obituary.

How long after the person's passing should I publish the obituary?

The timing varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Typically, an obituary is published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes! Many online platforms and social media sites allow you to publish an obituary digitally. This can be especially useful for people who live far away or prefer online communication.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication directly as soon as possible to request corrections. They will work with you to make changes and republish the revised obituary.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template or example?

You can use templates or examples as inspiration, but it's best to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life and personality.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to emotional distress?

It's okay to take your time and ask for help if needed. Consider enlisting the support of a friend, family member, or professional writer who can assist with crafting a beautiful tribute.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor their loved one's legacy.

How do I preserve an online obituary for future generations?

Screenshot or print out a copy of the online obituary for your records. You can also consider creating a digital archive or scrapbook with memories and mementos from your loved one's life.

Contact a trusted friend, family member, or funeral home for guidance. They can help you determine what details are most important to include.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Absolutely! Writing an belated obituary can be a therapeutic way to process your emotions and celebrate your loved one's life, even if they passed away many years ago.

How do I handle conflicting opinions within the family about what to include in an obituary?

Gather input from all interested parties and try to find common ground. If necessary, consider having multiple versions of the obituary or including different perspectives in separate sections.
