Obituary Preview: Izaac Michael Herbst, 24, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Parish, St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Doug Klein will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at St. Joseph Church. There will be a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. followed by a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Thursday.
Izaac Michael Herbst was born on June 28, 1999, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Michael and Cheri (Wiltgen) Herbst. He attended Gehlen Catholic Schools, graduating in 2018. He was currently employed at NorAm Cold Storage in Le Mars.
During his middle and high school years, Izaac participated in numerous sports. He played football, baseball, track and basketball. In his spare time, Izaac never turned down a game of Euchre with his family or a captain and coke with a lime downtown. He liked to hide his softer side, but there was no hiding it when he played with his niece and nephew, Haydyn and Waylon. He was the best uncle to them, and they will miss the endless laughs he provided. He loved to tease and always had a sly smirk that would light up a room. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and loved ones.
Grateful to have shared his life are his parents, Mike and Cheri Herbst of Le Mars, IA, siblings, Cayla Herbst and her daughter, Haydyn of Le Mars, IA, Austin Herbst and his wife, Lauren of Omaha, NE, Elliotte Herbst and her son, Waylon of Le Mars, IA and Ethan Herbst of Le Mars, IA; grandparents, Ron and Cheryl Wiltgen of Le Mars, IA and Mary Herbst of Le Mars, IA; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.
Donald Bernard Muecke was born on July 13, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Bernice (Johnson) Muecke. He attended high school in Hinton, Iowa and later studied at a trade school in Omaha, Nebraska.
On May 28, 1972, Don and Marylyn Wiener were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. They made their home in Kingsley, Iowa before moving to their present home in rural Hinton. Along with farming, Don worked at Curly’s Foods in Sioux City, Iowa.
Don was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He was an avid sports fan and closely followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also belonged to a bowling team. He always looked forward to the summer fishing trips in Minnesota with friends and family. The most important thing to him was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Marylyn of rural Hinton, IA; children, Casey (Brandi) Muecke of rural Hinton, IA and Katie (Travis) Merritt of Whiting, IA; a close family friend, Bobbi Wessling of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren, Jonathon Vollmer, Marisa Vollmer, Caleb Merritt, Seth Merritt, Haley (Jay) DeVries, Autum Wessling, Iszbella(Jacob) Todd, Kyle Hubbell, Lucas Cray, Shae Muecke and Kylie Muecke; great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Louis Jay (L.J.) DeVries and Verity Vollmer; sisters, Connie (John) Rumbaugh of Omaha, NE and Diane Zinke of Le Sueur, MN; a sister-in-law, Sandy Muecke of rural Hinton, IA; Marylyn’s siblings, Darrell (Janet) Wiener of Le Mars, IA, LaVonne of Le Mars, IA, Leland of Le Mars, IA, Arlene of Le Mars, IA, Arnold (Kelly) of Nemaha, IA, Elaine (James) Droegmiller of Cushing, IA and Pat (James) Verrips of Sheldon, IA; a sister-in-law, Doris Wiener of Burnsville, MN and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Doug’s life and Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. The family will host a luncheon after the services. Visitation with the family present will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, with a scriptural prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will also be one hour of visitation before the Mass on Saturday morning. Doug was born January 16, 1968, in Le Mars to Walter Joseph and Rita Regina (Rolfes) Niehus. Doug was the 6th of 7 siblings and loved by his brothers and sister. Growing up, Doug helped on the family farm outside of Le Mars, including milking cows, feeding animals, walking beans, driving the John Deere, and planting and harvesting tasks. Doug looked forward to baling times, as he enjoyed joking and working with all the “hired help.”
Doug lived his life with a positive attitude and a smile despite challenges. At an early age, school bus-mates nicknamed Doug “Smiley”, for his perpetual grin and outgoing demeanor. He attended Le Mars Community School for 13 years and participated for many years in the Iowa Special Olympics including track & field and bowling, for which he was named the State Champ. Doug enjoyed participating in 4H with his brothers, sister, and neighbors and showed hogs at the Plymouth County Fair while a teenager. He enjoyed family reunions, riding his bike, swimming, watching TV, and visiting with members of the community. Doug showed a great memory for recalling birthdays, anniversaries, and other special dates.
He worked at Lifeskills in the Le Mars area for many years, helping with laundry and janitorial work. He was a member of the Pride Group and met and maintained many friendships there over the years, including living in several group homes. He also belonged to Aktion Club, happily participating in various uplifting community events and outings.
Doug enjoyed his family including his many nieces and nephews, visiting them in CA, CO, FL, IA, UT, and WA and welcoming them to visit him in Le Mars, especially during the Plymouth County Fair and Ice Cream Days. He remained always curious and thoughtfully interested in others: asking about family, activities, and events going on in their life. Doug enjoyed his time as a lifelong member of All Saints Catholic Parish including frequent service as Mass greeter and bulletin distributor.
Doug is survived by four brothers and a sister and their families: Ken (Mary) Niehus of Le Mars, Rose Hanson (Niehus) of Johnston IA, Gerry (Monika) Niehus of Hesperia CA, Dan (Renee) Niehus of Castle Rock CO and Mark (Karla) Niehus of Prosper TX. Survivors also include a Sister-In-Law, Angela Niehus and many nephews and nieces, his Aunt Sister Fidelis Rolfes of Chicago and Uncle Bill Foley of Le Mars, and numerous cousins.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents Wally and Rita, brother-in-law Steve Hanson, and brother Tom.
The Niehus Family wishes to express their loving gratitude to the many kind and loving staff and patrons of Pride Group, Lifeskills, All Saints Catholic Parish, Avera Health System, and Happy Siesta, as well as many, many community members who knew Doug and greeted him by name and showed him kindness.

Obituary Preview: Jerry Dean Strain, 87, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders.
Jerry Dean Strain was born October 13, 1936, in Crawfordsville, Iowa to Fred and Sadie (Raymond) Strain. Jerry grew up in SE Iowa and was raised primarily by his father. One of his happiest moments of his childhood was naming his little brother, Teddy Louis. Although they grew up separated, he spent as much time with his brother as he could in his late teenage years.
Jerry spent nearly 20 years on active duty in the Navy. He enlisted on January 8, 1954, and was honorably discharged on April 26, 1973. Four of those years were spent with his brother in the Navy. Of those nearly 20 years, 18 years and 11 months were spent aboard numerous ships. He was stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, USS Ben H. Richard, USS Ranger, and USS Ticonderoga to name a few. He was part of the original crew that commissioned the USS Pyro in October 1957. Aboard the USS Ticonderoga on May 15, 1957, he crossed the equator on a 13-month journey from the East Coast, through the Panama Canal, and to the West Coast. He earned the rank of first-class petty officer among many other awards. His lengthy list of medals and awards includes; the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with a device awarded in 1960, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Vietnam Navy Unit Commendation ribbon with one bronze star, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal first award for service ending in May 15, 1963. He also received many citations for good behavior. As one reads,” for exceptionally meritorious service from 26 November 1965 to 14 May 1966 while participating in the combat operations against the insurgent communist guerrilla forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During this period, Kitty Hawk-based aircraft flew over 10,000 sorties and delivered over 10,700 tons of ordinances against enemy forces”.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Jerry went to live with his brother in Estherville, Iowa where he spent time with his nieces and nephew. Jerry always had great joy in being an uncle and would take the children on grand adventures, which there are many stories told about.
While working at Berkley Jerry met the love of his life Katheryn Larson. They were united in marriage on August 13, 1976, and Jerry became a step-father to Glenn and James Larson. Jerry and Kathy welcomed a daughter, JeriKay Elizabeth, to the family in March of 1977. Jerry and Kathy made their home in Rural Jackson, Minnesota until 1996. At that time they moved to Estherville, Iowa. Jerry worked for the United States Postal Service from 1982- 1998. At this time Jerry and Kathy retired and enjoyed their retirement by traveling and spending time with their grown children and grandchildren. Jerry and Kathy made their home in Merrill, Iowa in 2004 and then moved to Le Mars in 2017. Jerry was a resident at Sunrise Retirement Community at the time of his passing on May 4th 2024. Jerry is survived by his wife Kathy Strain of Sioux City, IA; his daughter JeriKay (Jason) Otto of Le Mars, IA; step-sons James (Carol) Larson of Sherman, TX and Glenn (Linda) Larson of Bondurant, IA; grandchildren, Justin Otto (fiancé Audra Penning) of Le Mars, IA, Sami Otto of Le Mars, IA, Brandy (Brendon) Jonsson of Lumberton, NC, Kyle (Katie) Larson of Sherman, TX, Travis (Kerry) Olson of Boudurant, IA, Richie (Holly) Gustin of Gilman, IA and

Kenneth Andrew Hoss - August 07, 1935 - May 02, 2024

Visitation with the family present will begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, all at the church. There will also be one hour of visitation before the Mass on Wednesday.
Kenneth Andrew Hoss was born on August 7, 1935, in Remsen, Iowa to Frank and Clara (Lewis) Hoss. The family lived in rural Le Mars where Ken graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1955. The couple met at a dance at Briar Cliff College. On July 5, 1958, Kenneth and Waunita Guerdet were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong, Iowa.
Ken worked as a mechanic, shop foreman and salesman at Pews, Inc. from 1955 to 1968. In 1968, he went to work for Meis Seed and Feed and worked there until 1998. Ken also farmed during this time from1964 to 1984. From 1998 to 2023, Ken went to work as a custodian at Kluckhohn Elementary School and Mid-American Energy. Ken officially retired from Kluckhohn in December of 2023.
Ken was a member of All-Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church and the Knights of Columbus. Music has always played an important role in Ken’s life and continues with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren today.

Barry William McDougall was born March 30, 1950, in Whittier, California to Bill and Erlene (Plueger) McDougall. Barry was an avid sports lover and participant. He graduated in 1968 from Le Mars Community High School. Barry graduated from Westmar College in 1973.
For several years Barry was a cattle buyer. In 1984, Barry opened his own business, McDougall Commodities, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which he maintained for 39 years until health issues forced him to retire. Barry and Sara enjoyed over 20 summers at Manhattan Beach on Lake Okoboji. They also attended many Iowa Hawkeye Football games while Heather was in college.
Barry is survived by his wife, Sara of Sioux Falls, SD; his daughter, Dr. Heather (Tommy Brown) McDougall of Sioux Falls, SD; his son, Justin (Irina) Mc Dougall of Colorado Springs, CO; his grandchildren, Jake, Ellie and Nick Brown all of Sioux Falls, SD; his father, Bill (Dee) McDougall of Le Mars, IA; his brother, Mike of Sioux City, IA; his sister, Cindy of Sioux Falls, SD; a niece, Dr. Valerie (Brian) Kestner of Leawood, KS; and a nephew, Bob McDougall of Le Mars, IA.

Lori Ann Merrill - February 09, 1961 - March 12, 2024

A graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. There will be a reception following at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill.
Lori Ann Boehm was born on February 9, 1961, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Harriett (Monk) Boehm. She attended Le Mars Community High School, graduating in 1979. She furthered her education at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City where she majored in accounting.
Through the years, you could find Lori and her beautiful smile serving tables at several area restaurants including the Family Table, Pizza Hut, Hungrys Far North, Midway and also at a café in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Following school, Lori took a position with Aalfs Manufacturing in Sioux City as a seamstress which encouraged her love of sewing and crafting. She later worked at MidAmerican Energy for a local cleaning service. After her father passed away, Lori moved in with her mother, to take care of and provide relief from the loneliness her mother was experiencing. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.
Lori enjoyed being a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa. She was proud to serve as the president of the church council for several years. She also taught Sunday School and assisted with the church confirmation classes. Strong in her faith, Lori also participated in the Thursday Morning Women’s Bible Study at Sunrise Villa Apartments. In recent years, Lori’s passion and skills for crafting, diamond painting, embroidering, and crocheting helped establish and build her sister Cindy’s business, Lloyd’s Creations. She enjoyed traveling extensively with Cindy to craft shows throughout the Midwest.
Having a mother who enjoys playing cards, Lori held a deck shortly after she learned how to walk. She learned to play competitively while sitting on a stock pot on a kitchen chair. Lori always enjoyed a good game of cards and was so proud that she dealt her mother the perfect Prunce hand. Lori also enjoyed playing and teaching her sisters the game of Cribbage.
Lori inherited her love of animals from her father who had a soft heart for them. Not having children of her own, she always considered all the pets she had as her kids. For many years, Lori volunteered for the Wildlife Lodge & Clinic, an animal rescue located in Woodbury County. She cared for many types of baby animals as well as rehabilitating injured adult animals, preparing all to be released into their natural environment.
She will be lovingly remembered by her mother, Harriett Boehm of Remsen, (formerly of Merrill); sisters, Cindy (Mike) Lloyd of Westfield, Lisa Boehm of Le Mars, Beth Young of Council Bluffs, and Brenda (Jeff) De Lance of Le Mars, seven nieces, two nephews, eleven great nieces and fourteen great nephews.
Lori was preceded in death by her father, Donald on November 1, 2012; and the love of her life, Tim “Tac” Crowe on August 29, 2015.

Frank Vanden Bosch was born on June 12, 1933, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Gerrit and Hendrikje “Hattie” (Bakker) Vanden Bosch. He attended school in Sioux Center and later moved to Le Mars, Iowa. While living in Le Mars, Frank worked as a handyman and operated a lawn service.
Frank was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. Recently he lived briefly in Sioux City before returning to Le Mars in 2022, where he resided at Accura Healthcare.
He is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; and six brothers.

Obituary Preview: Clara L. Hunter, 76, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the First Baptist Church in Le Mars. Rev. Jon Meredith will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Monday.
Clara Louise Sams was born on June 11, 1947, in Le Mars, Iowa to Everette and Rose (VanVoorst) Sams. She attended school in Le Mars through the 8th grade. During her lifetime, Clara worked at Harker’s, Wells Blue Bunny and Emma Raes Café.
On August 26, 1966, Clara and Thomas Nilles were united in marriage at Vermillion, South Dakota. The couple had two children, Tommy and Stacy. Her husband passed away on April 24, 1970. Clara and Ronald Hunter were united in marriage on June 15, 1973, in Vermillion. The couple had one child, Amy, and lived in Le Mars.
Clara belonged to the First Baptist Church in Le Mars. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and decorating. Her family was her world.

Kathy Marie Hansson - September 20, 1948 - February 01, 2024

Obituary Preview: Kathy Marie Hansson, 75, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Pastor Luke Cargin will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date at the Moorland Cemetery in Moorland, Michigan. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Kathy Marie Hansson was born on September 20, 1948, in Muskegon, Michigan to Joseph and Lorraine (Hogan) Taylor. She graduated from high school in Ravenna, Michigan in 1966. She then moved to Texas where she married Ermilo Sandoval Duque. Ermilo passed away in 1970. Kathy then returned to Michigan where she gave birth to their son, Ermilo Sandoval Duque. In 1979, Kathy moved to Sioux City, Iowa where she worked at Bush Dry Cleaners in the Morningside area for many years. She married Robert Gunsolly in 1990. In 1999, Kathy moved to Le Mars where she worked as a Line Manager at Well’s Blue Bunny. Kathy married Hugo Hansson on September 20, 2003, in Le Mars. Kathy retired from Well’s on January 1, 2021.
Kathy was very proud of the over 26 years she worked in the dry-cleaning industry. She was recognized in the Sioux City Journal as one of the premier dry cleaners in Siouxland. Kathy loved animals, especially her cat, Ally. She also enjoyed feeding the squirrels, she loved plants, especially sunflowers, and was passionate about helping and caring for others.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Hugo Hansson of Le Mars, IA. her son, Ermilo Sandoval (Donna) Duque of Le Mars, IA; her stepsons, Tim Hansson of Akron, IA, Trevor (Amy) Hansson of Akron, Tatum Gunsolly of Marion, IA and Tramain (Tina) Gunsolly of Omaha, NE; her siblings, Roger (Shari) Taylor, Brian (Manya) Taylor, Tom (Deb) Taylor and Rick (Dawn) Taylor all of Ravenna, MI; grandchildren, Jadon, Kaitlyn, Ben, Will, Karsten, Grayson, Cody, Dylan and Cole; her in-laws; Alfred, Eddy, Jovina, Carlo, Peter, and Susan Hansson.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Bobby, Larry, and Joe Taylor; brothers-in-law, John and Johannes Hansson; sister-in-law, Jovina Altiery; and daughter in-law, Jamie Duque.
Kathy will be remembered and very missed by all her knew her. She never met a stranger. She was always there with a smile and a hug and helped everyone around her.

Lorraine Louise Josephine Rolfes Foley was born on April 25, 1932, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Greis) Rolfes. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1951. Lorraine furthered her education and received a degree from the Mercy School Nursing in Sioux City as a Registered Nurse. She worked for many years as a nurse at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. She also served on the Le Mars Ambulance as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) on the first EMT crew.
Lorraine and William Foley were united in marriage on May 19, 1959, in Le Mars, Iowa. Lorraine was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars where she served on the Altar Society. She enjoyed being a nurse and taking care of others, reunions with nursing classmates, cooking, bowling league, trips to Germany and Ireland, several bus trips and traveling with their gang.
Grateful to have shared her life is her husband of 64 years, William “Bill” Foley of Le Mars, IA; her children, Cindy (Blake) Gillman of Mesa, AZ, William Foley, III of Wichita, KS and Mary (Doug Balvanz) Foley Balvanz of Ankeny, IA; three grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sister Fidelis M. Rolfes of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellen Janice Kerr was born on February 1, 1951, at University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Vernon G. and Evelyn (Droll) Helt. Her father was a doctor so the family lived in various places in the Northwest Iowa area. She graduated from South Sioux City High School and furthered her education at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa.
Ellen married Mike Bolton and they made Cherokee, Iowa their home. Ellen worked at the Cherokee County Courthouse in the auto department with the Treasurer’s Office. Mike passed away and Ellen continued living in Cherokee.
Ellen then married Donald Kerr on November 12, 1994, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They made their home on a farm near Marcus, Iowa. Throughout the years, Ellen took classes at Western Iowa Technical College in Cherokee and Buena Vista University in Le Mars. They retired and moved to a home in Le Mars.
She was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. In her spare time Ellen enjoyed crocheting.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Donald of Le Mars, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Varrick and Candace Helt of Wildwood, FL; sisters-in-law, Donna Helt of Lincoln, NE and Julie Helt of Sergeant Bluff, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Mike; a sister, Erika of Dakota City, NE brothers, Victor; Vincent (Cathy) and Valdemar Helt.

Mary Ellen Sherlock was born on January 6, 1939, on the family farm, near Oyens, IA, the daughter of Julius and Anna (Nilles) Sherlock. She attended school at Remsen St. Mary’s High School, where she graduated in 1956.
Mary was united in marriage to Robert Fulton on November 5, 1960, at Saint Catherine’s Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa, and they began their married life in Le Mars. They were blessed with a son Jeff and a daughter Jill. Over the years Mary worked at Aalfs Manufacturing in Le Mars, K-Products in Orange City, and as a salesclerk at Hardware Hank in Le Mars.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. She was very active playing in several card clubs, spending time with her family, and regularly attending sisters’ day with her sisters each month. Dean O. Dunn was born on May 8, 1930, in West Bend, Iowa, the son of Joseph H. and Viola (Broadwell) Dunn. He graduated from West Bend High School and then began farming along with raising sheep, hogs and cattle.
On March 23, 1952, Dean and Dorothy Stief were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. In 1961, Dean and Dorothy moved to a farm near Merrill, Iowa where they raised their two children, Jayne and Jay. Along with farming, Dean worked as a crop adjuster for Mark Crop Insurance and the Plymouth County FSA office. He also sold seed corn and soybeans for Pioneer, Stine and Garst.
Dean was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he ushered. His life centered around his family. Dean enjoyed numerous trips with his family to Branson, Missouri.

Marilyn Kay Wingert was born January 6, 1937, in Le Mars to Marshall and Dorothy (Keizer) Rees of rural Le Mars. Marilyn worked as a registered nurse for 44 years before retiring in 2002. She was a 1955 graduate of Le Mars Community High School and a 1958 graduate of Methodist Nursing School.

Cynthia Alice Plendl was born on June 22, 1941, in Le Mars, Iowa, one of six children born to Francis and Christine (Majeres) Schiefen. She was baptized on June 29, 1941, made her first communion on May 8, 1949, and was confirmed on June 6, 1950. Cynthia attended St. Joseph School in Le Mars and graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1959.
Cynthia met Kenneth Plendl at the weekly Shore Acres dances in Riverside and they were later united in marriage on September 5, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars. They lived in various communities in Northwest Iowa until moving back to Le Mars in 1970. Cynthia was a lifelong cook in Le Mars. She cooked at the Truck Haven Café, Monroe’s Café, Club Café, and Timmy’s before finally settling into the Abbey of Le Mars from which she retired after 28 years in 2012. She was the best cook around. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and attended a few of their games. She liked to scrapbook her family’s activities and compile photo albums. When she was not engaged in those activities, she enjoyed playing games with her family, especially Pinochle and Canasta. She was also the best caregiver to her husband Kenny and her son, Brian as they battled cancer in the years before they passed away. She will be remembered most for her unconditional love above all else.

Debra Lynn Daniels was born on November 8, 1954, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard Edward and Audrey Marie (McDonald) Daniels. She graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1972 and continued her education at Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City. Debbie spent most of her working years as a Judicial Clerk for the State of Iowa. She also worked as a Medical Transcriptionist at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Debbie was a member of the Adaville Methodist Church, rural Akron, Iowa. During her working years, she served as an officer with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). She was an avid reader, watched westerns and wrote short stories and articles. Debbie was a cat lover and enjoyed travelling by bus, train and cruising.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Pastor Jason Larson will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Kevin Jay Olson was born on July 30, 1959, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Calmer Charles and Theda Ruth (Wiecht) Olson. He attended Le Mars Community High School. In 1977, he took a position with Nutraflow. He switched careers in 1982 when he became a truck driver. In 1994, Kevin purchased his own truck. He was currently driving for BLT until his health forced him to retire in August of 2023. He married Tiffany Korver on October 6, 2007, in Seney, Iowa where they made their home.
Kevin was a member of the Eagles Club in Le Mars. In his spare time you could find him riding his Harley, camping, cruising and watching NASCAR. Kevin’s favorite sports team was the Steelers. Most important to Kevin was spending time with his children and grandchildren and teaching them everything he knew.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Tiffany of Seney, IA; children, Bradley Olson of Remsen, IA, Sara (Chad) Gotto of Remsen, IA, Brandon Olson of Sioux City, IA, Nicholas (Melinda) Shipley of Le Mars, IA and Taylor Shipley of Le Mars, IA; 14 grandchildren; sisters, Beverly (Rick) Erickson of Las Vegas, NV, Rhonda (Dan) Beach of Lexington, KY and Lori (Tony) Schuver of Granville, IA; along with many nieces and nephews.

Dean Douglas Rodenburgh was born on October 3, 1967, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Johannes “Hans” and Evelyn Rae (Van Voorst) Rodenburgh. He graduated from high school in Colorado. As a child he had many wonderful memories of early school days. He was fond of his walks to school “uphill both ways,” elementary school teachers and the neighborhood cookie lady in Sioux City, IA. He enjoyed playing with siblings, friends, and cousins and he poured his heart into every moment. Those days included baseball, flying model airplanes, fishing, helping dad with his toy train, riding bikes, playing games and playing with the kite that reached the heavens. He was always outside playing larger than life.
After moving from Sioux City, IA to Orange City, IA he gained new friendships. Days were spent chasing around on mopeds, swimming at the Boyden Pit and Sandy Hollow. He started working with his dad at the appliance repair shop. Dean then followed his dad to Colorado where they loved to hike. This is where he was able to climb twelve of the “14ers.” He loved racquetball and was very competitive. To us Colorado will always be our Deano.
Following high school, Dean excelled as one of the top Salespersons at multiple companies, His name was always on the top of the Leader Board. His personality was so genuine, honest, and cared deeply that he was only selling to those it would benefit.
On September 20, 1996, Dean and Brenda Gunn were united in marriage at Denver, CO. They made their home in the Denver Metro area and in 2016 they were drawn to Parker, CO to be closer to family.
Most important to Dean was his faith and family. He was proud of his Dutch heritage and Christian upbringing. He was a lover of music and had an extensive collection. He also enjoyed assembling stereo equipment for himself and others.
Grateful to have shared his life is his wife, Brenda of Parker, CO; a daughter and her husband, Heather and Sam Ngure of Phoenix, AZ; a grandchild, Julian Ngure of Phoenix, AZ; his mother, Evelyn Rae Rodenburgh of Le Mars, IA; sisters, Monica (Randy) Engeltjes of Sioux Falls, SD and Paula (Jeff Morgan) Owens of Kellogg, IA; brothers, Mark (Kierra) Rodenburgh of Waterloo, IA and Ian Rodenburgh of Salt Lake City, UT; nieces and nephews included Ryan (Lacey) Engeltjes, Brent Gunn Jr., Christiane “Chrissy” (Taylor) Ely, Kyla (Khyyam) Crawford, Brianna Owens, Raelynn (ShauRome Taylor Jr.) Owens, Traer (Zoe Lennox) Owens, Lane Rodenburgh, and Reese Rodenburgh; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Mesa, AZ -Dennis Elroy Heimgartner, 73, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Hinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2023, at his home in Mesa, surrounded by his children. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
Dennis was born in Le Mars, Iowa, on February 28, 1950, to Elroy and Maycele (Lang) Heimgartner. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa. Dennis attended school at Hinton Community School, where he met the love of his life, Jan Brouwer, in study hall during his senior year.
Shortly after graduating in 1968, Dennis worked for Ozark Airlines in Chicago until he moved back to Iowa in 1969 to marry his high school sweetheart, Jan, on December 19, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Leeds, Iowa, and Dennis became a car salesman in 1973. He sold cars for Chrysler Plymouth, Wilson Motors, Charlie Zook Dodge and Hoak Cadillac Oldsmobile.
In 1979, Dennis stopped selling cars, and the couple moved to the Heimgartner family farm in rural Hinton. Early on in Dennis’s farming career, he also worked full-time as a welding foreman for Schaeff NAMCO in Sioux City. The couple welcomed a son in 1971, and a daughter in 1973.
Passionate and devoted to their faith, Dennis and Jan were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Jan was a Sunday school and vacation bible schoolteacher. Dennis served on the finance board and the cemetery committee. He was a forever faithful volunteer and friend to everyone in both good and bad times.
Dennis was proud of his family, which included his wife, Jan, of Hinton, Iowa; his son, Jeffrey Heimgartner, and his wife, Jasmine, of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Melissa Heimgartner, also of Lincoln; two grandsons, Jayden and Jonah Heimgartner of Lincoln; sister Diane (Heimgartner) Hartman and her husband Cal of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister Glenda Heimgartner of Le Mars, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan, on August 19, 2021, and by his parents, Elroy on January 23, 2009, and Maycele on November 22, 2019.

Verna Louise Kammann was born on April 10, 1940, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of August Meinard and Leona Henrietta (Krause) Kammann. She graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1958 and continued her education at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
On August 9, 1963, Verna and Jacob Winfield Van Oort were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Along with raising her two children, Verna worked at the Le Mars Savings Bank. She retired in 1971.
Verna was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She assisted with the monthly newsletter, Vacation Bible School each summer and quilted with the guild.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kyle Van Oort of Tucson, AZ and Kari Van Oort of Shawnee, KS; two sisters, Norma Marie Schmidt of Sioux Falls, SD and Edna Arlene Mross of Minden, NV; along with nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jacob on November 11, 2023; and a granddog, Buddy.
Memorials may be directed to the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.
