Maxine Tillman Kendrick - March 22, 1942 - February 10, 2024

Departed: 02/10/2024 (Hahira)
Obituary Preview: Maxine Tillman Kendrick, a woman of warmth and grace, passed away on February 10, 2024, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospice Care after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 22, 1942, to the late L. Mac and Floyce Vickers Tillman, Maxine's life was a tapestry of love and cherished moments.
Maxine enjoyed a delightful childhood. In her early years, Maxine and her mother temporarily resided with Mrs. Rilla Hall in Hahira, GA, while her father served as a paratrooper in WWII. Upon his return, the family relocated to Columbia, S.C., where they spent the following eight years. These years were filled with many adventures that the family shared with Maxine’s beloved Aunt Maggie, Uncle Dennis, Uncle David, and cousins. Summers were particularly special to Maxine, and she split them between both sets of grandparents. Her Grandma Tillman taught her valuable skills, including knitting, crafting, and puzzle-solving, and instilled in her many Scottish traditions. She cherished the "summer camp" atmosphere on her Vickers grandparents' farm, where she learned to make biscuits for the farm hands and enjoyed shelling peas on the porch. In addition, Maxine was a wonderful sibling. She was 13 years old when her sister was born, and Maxine embraced her role as a big sister. She spent endless time with her sister, Su Beth, and the two shared countless laughs and memories.
Maxine graduated from Valdosta High School in 1960, leaving behind a legacy of camaraderie and lasting friendships. During her high school years, she met her future husband, Joe, and their courtship unfolded into a remarkable 54-year marriage. Maxine was industrious, driven in every aspect of her life, and succeeded at whatever she did. For instance, she and Joe hand-dug the foundation of their family home, and it was here that she excelled at gardening, often sharing an overabundance of produce with family and friends. Later in life, Maxine organized countless trips abroad, traveling to Scotland to visit the village of her cherished grandmother, in addition to many other trips with her husband and other family members.
As a young mother, Maxine was known for her vibrant spirit. She rode bikes with her beloved children, Robert and Jennifer, sewed clothes for them, and took them to the pool to swim on hot summer days (which were plenty in the heat of the South!). Her role as a grandmother brought even greater joy, as she relished playing with her grandchildren, Ashley and John. Maxine would often “steal” the grandkids for extended periods, and her greatest joy was seeing them as frequently as possible. She organized trips to Disney World and celebrated every moment with a birthday cake (regardless of whether anyone was celebrating an actual birthday!). Before she had grandchildren, she served as a second grandmother to her niece, teaching her to play jacks and buying matching swimsuits for summers spent at Maxine’s pool. There is no denying the indelible mark Maxine made on her immediate and extended family's lives; each one is better for having known her.
Aside from the time spent with her family, Maxine worked off and on outside the home in banking as her family moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee, Florida. She continued her education in Tallahassee, graduating from FSU with a degree in Finance. She later worked for the State of Florida’s retirement system as an internal auditor until her well-deserved retirement. Maxine dedicated over two decades of her post-retirement years volunteering as a TaxAide with the Senior Center in Tallahassee. Here, she formed enduring friendships and touched many lives, providing invaluable assistance to others.
With her warm personality, quick wit, can-do spirit, and loving nature, Maxine will be deeply missed by her friends and family. Her legacy lives on through her children, Robert Kendrick (Renea) and Jennifer Sasser (Kenneth), grandchildren Ashley Sasser, John Sasser, and Alexia Hogan (Nick), great-granddaughter Penelope Hogan, sister Su Beth Garland (Bill), niece Casey Colson (Hunter), brother-in-law Jack Kendrick, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Maxine's impact on the lives she touched, her love for family, and her dedication to helping others will be remembered with fondness and gratitude.

The life of the party, the love of many, the envy of some. A man who lived life to the fullest and got every bit of the good out of it he could. Many in life go through the motions. He did not. He lived. Chad was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and grew up in Watkinsville, Georgia where he was a member of Watkinsville First UMC. He graduated from Oconee County High School in 1997 and earned a BA from Valdosta State University. After graduation, he was hired by the Georgia Wildlife Agency to live on Ossabaw Island and remove as many hogs as possible to protect nesting sea turtles. The few remaining hogs are still in fear when they hear his name, and the increased numbers of surviving sea turtles worship his legend. After three years he joined the Wayne County school system as a construction teacher, where he has been a positive influence on all of his students and fellow teachers. He is survived by his parents, Doug and Judy Hall, his son Jack Reyna, his brothers and sisters, Parker and Kim Hall and Jody and Sally Hall, as well as five nieces and nephews, Alison Grace, Brody Nelson, Tulley Ann, Travis Pratt, and Trapper James Hall. The world lost a good man. The Angels and everyone up there got a good ‘un, and Heaven got better. Praise God!
The word “Momma” was tattooed on his arm as a tribute to the love he had for her.

Martha Ann Barfield - November 13, 1928 - June 10, 2023

Departed: 06/10/2023 (Hahira)
Obituary Preview: Martha Ann Barfield, 94, of Hahira, died Saturday, June 10, 2023. Martha Ann was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 13, 1928, to the late Leland Ellis Gordon and Nannie Mae
Davis Gordon Hicks. Her childhood was spent living in Fort Gaines and Perry, Georgia where she enjoyed athletics and graduated from high school. She attended Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia continuing as an athlete while earning her teaching certification. Ann moved to Hahira where she taught at Hahira Elementary School and met her late husband of 59 years, H.M. Barfield, during her daily pedestrian commute from her boarding house to the school.
Ann and H. M. raised three children in Hahira (Kay, Lell, and Mason), supporting them in their athletic, academic, and cultural endeavors. A particularly endearing story of Ann is about dressing her two very young daughters in their Sunday finest for a concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at the Ritz Theater in Valdosta in order that they be exposed to cultural riches not found in the community. In the girls’ recollection, each person they passed while finding their seats stared aghast at her gall.
All three children attended summer camp in North Carolina – Kay and Lell to Camp Greystone and Mason to Windy Wood. Ann joined them in the 60s as a camp counselor and hostess. Ann and H. M., and their faithful corgi, Peach, all returned to Greystone in the 80s taking on a variety of roles and leaving memories that exist today in a mural on the dining room wall and on their “home away from home” while at Greystone – Ann and H. M. Cabin.
In the late 1960’s Ann made a serious commitment to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For the rest of her life, He was her daily strength and focus. She went on to mentor and disciple many in their Christian walk. Her legacy is her daily ministry to anyone who crossed her path with whom she shared her love, faith, and encouragement.
Ann is survived by three children and their spouses, Kay Lee and Gary Brown of Covington, Lell and Peter Harboe of Flat Rock, NC., Mason and Elizabeth Barfield of Hahira, 11-grandchildren, Lydia and Braxton McMurphy, Duke and Whitney Lee, Martha and Nick Kliossis, Catherine Lee, Leslie and Thomas Petit, Neal Brown and Elijah Murray, Nancy Owings, Ellen-Anne and James Skelton, Josh and Heather Barfield, Ryan and Suzanne Barfield, Jesse and Emily Barfield, and 11 great grandchildren, Rivers and Braxton McMurphy, Hugo Petit, Georgia Kay Kliossis, Harboe, Else, and Finn Skelton, Mason and Kinley Barfield, and Lillian and Davis Barfield.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM at the Hahira Depot, 220 West Main Street, Hahira, GA. The family hopes that any friends who may have a particular story or sentiment they would like to share with them, please consider committing it to paper. It may be left at visitation in a container designated for that purpose, mailed to 621 Hodge Street, Hahira, GA 31632, or emailed to masonbarfield@gmail.com
