Sharon Kay Weedman - September 07, 1941 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (New Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Kay Weedman, 82, of Columbia, formerly of Macon, Missouri and Phoenix, Arizona died March 15, 2024.
Sharon was born September 7, 1941 in Belmond, Iowa to Ivan and Sylvia Fleming. As the youngest of five siblings, Sharon was determined to pave her own path in life and did so leaning into her undeniable strength and love for people. She spent her life pouring into the lives of others, from friendly chats with neighbors at the grocery store to filling the cups and hearts of those she served in food service over the course of 20 years at Glencroft Retirement Community in Glendale, AZ. Sharon never knew a stranger.
She was also a gifted poet who loved to read. When Sharon wrote, her words danced across the page, creating deep, soulful illustrations in the minds of readers; a sharpened pencil was all she ever needed to create a work of art.
Despite her creativity and impact in the community, Sharon would say her greatest accomplishment was as a Mom and Grammy. She set the standard for what motherhood is. Through sacrifice, tenacity, and unconditional love, Sharon raised three successful children and loved them more than life itself. Being a Grammy was no different for her. Through countless sleepovers, card table forts, and many batches of Rice Krispies treats, she made every moment with her grandchildren count. She helped them develop an appreciation for the simple things in life, and provided a stable foundation to weather any storm. Sharon was blessed with her tenth great-grandchild, Logan, in 2020, with whom she shared a special bond. She gladly embraced her new role as ‘Bappy,’ a fitting conclusion to her incredible legacy.
Sharon is survived by her three children, Mitch Wilt, Scott (Cindy) Wilt, of Buckeye, AZ, Shelly (Eddie) Maupin of Columbia, MO, a sister, Norma Keeney of Kearney, MO, a brother, Russell Fleming of Macon, MO, four grandchildren, Jennifer Wilt of Phoenix, AZ, Michael (Rachael) Wilt of Buckeye, AZ, Bryana (Dennis) Larimer, Blaine Maupin, of Columbia, MO, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Sharon is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Weedman, parents, and two brothers, Marvin and Lowell Fleming.
Memorials are suggested to Services for Independent Living, c/o Markland-Yager Funeral Home, PO Box 126, New Franklin, MO 65274.
Online condolences and tributes may be shared with the family at www.marklandyager.com.

Walter Leon Banks - October 22, 1950 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (New Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Walter Leon Banks, age 73, passed away at his New Franklin, MO home on the morning of December 26, 2023.
Born at St. Jospeh Hospital in Boonville, MO on October 22, 1950, to Leon Banks and Phyllis (Lindsay) Mcllvain, Walter grew up in New Franklin where he attended school until his sophomore year.  His junior and senior years he attended Boonville High School.  At both New Franklin and Boonville, he played basketball and was such a talented player that he earned the nickname “The Machine.”  While he was on the Boonville team, they took second in the state in the 1967-1968 season, which was the farthest that Boonville has ever gotten in a state tournament, and he was named to the All-State team.  He then landed a basketball scholarship at CMSU in Warrensburg, MO where he majored in computer programming.
Walter was a dedicated, hard worker.  In May of 1975, he took a position as a programmer for Shelter Insurance in Columbia, MO where he rose to the position of senior analyst.  He worked there just shy of 37 years until his retirement in March of 2012.
He was a kind soul, volunteering at the Food Bank and donating blood to the Red Cross.  He served as an alderman in the New Franklin city council and helped organize the Santa Fe Trail Days for many years.
He was outgoing and personable, wouldn’t hesitate to strike up a conversation with a stranger.
He was a Christian, attended First Christian Church in New Franklin from birth, and apart from the time he lived in Columbia, he was an active member until they closed their doors in 2016.  More recently, he attended the First Christian Church in Boonville.
He was still athletic in his adult years, bowling and playing softball.  He also loved to watch sports, was a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Antonio Spurs, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
He was adventurous, a world traveler.  His boys have many amazing stories of all the places he took them to throughout the years.
He loved his children and grandchildren fiercely.  They met for lunch together every Sunday after church.  He was playful and had a good sense of humor.  During these lunches, if at a restaurant where he had to give his name for them to call out when a table or food was ready, he would tell them his name was “Mr. Wonderful,” embarrassing the grandchildren.  He was wonderful in so many ways, and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him well.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by two sons: Matthew Banks of New Franklin and Adam Banks of Boonville, three grandchildren: Gwen Pattan, Fletcher Wadeen, and Grady Banks, brother James David Banks, nephew John Banks, niece Daleen Banks, and many cousins and friends all over the country.
He will be remembered forever for his silly, smart, outgoing adventurous spirit and that huge smile.  We will miss him, but he lives on in the lessons he taught us and in all the memories we will hold dear.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Markland-Yager Funeral Home, 3855 Hwy. 5 N in New Franklin, MO, the visitation from 1-2 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m.

Charles Austin Stemberger - January 13, 1943 - August 02, 2023

Departed: 08/02/2023 (New Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Charles Austin (Pumpkin) Stemberger
On August 2, 2023, Charles Austin Stemberger of Syracuse MO, passed away at the age of 80 years young. He passed away peacefully at his farm surrounded by his loved ones.
The second of five children, Charlie was born January 13, 1943 at a log home in Morgan Country, Missouri to Charles and Irene Stemberger. They did not have much, but it was then that Charlie learned how to live off the land. He graduated from Otterville High School in May 1960.
On January 18, 1964, he married Dorothy Battles and they bought a farm near Syracuse, built their home with their own bare bands and raised their three children: Troy, Terri Ann and Larry, until Dorothy passed in 1988.  Charlie worked 36 years as an ironworker throughout the Midwest during those early years and was well-known in creating structures such as the Truman Dam and the Royals Stadium.
“Pumpkin” (as many people called him) loved fishing! He’d sit for hours in a boat or on the bank and fish even when they were not biting.  He lived for the catch; it didn’t matter what type: catfish, crappie, snagging, he was always ready to go fish! His sons, Troy and Larry and his grandson Kyle Cobb, shared his love and they fished together every time they could.  He passed that love on to his grandchildren as well.
He was always quite a story teller and loved to tell tall tales about being chased by a tornado, run over by his mom in her car, and being hit by lightning.  If he ran out of tales to tell, he would fill the silence with other stories from his formative years.
He met Pat Teague in 2001 at a dance one night and they have been inseparable since. Charlie and Pat both shared the love of dancing, and went dancing as often as they could.
In his later years, he adored spending time with his kids and grandkids, especially watching them dance and play sports and would do anything to see them smile (including dressing silly and wearing nail polish to make his granddaughters giggle).  Sitting around the table in the evenings with his children and their spouses, Charlie made countless memories playing pitch but no one wanted to be on his team because he’d pout if he lost. He enjoyed hanging out with his daughter, Terri Ann and her family and relied on her to set him straight when needed.  He also loved traveling, especially going to the east coast to see his son, Larry and visiting Pat’s family.
Charlie also loved going to the casino with his step-son Davyjoe Teague, grandson Bryan Teague, and grand-daughter Samantha Hedrick.  They always had a good time.  Charlie always loved family.  He loved going to Davyjoe and Bev Teague’s home for a family dinner.
During the winter, Charlie was always plotting his next garden and spent most of the spring and summer tenderly caring for it.  He’d get up before dawn to ensure frost had not ruined it and set traps to keep varmints away.  For years, he planted over an acre and relished in sharing his treasures with others.
Charlie always loved to see others happy.  He would help anyone out and was generous (sometimes to fault).  Most of all, he loved being around people; it fueled his life.
He was a proud member of Fortuna Baptist Church.
Survivors include: Pat Teague (of the home), Troy (Melisa) Stemberger of Cameron, MO, Terri Ann (Craig) Hutchison of Versailles, MO, Larry (Christina) Stemberger of Bluemont, Virginia. step-son Davyjoe (Bev) Teague of Versailles. Grandchildren: Kyle Cobb, Kylie and Ashley Hutchison, Elizabeth, Wyatt, Paige, and Barrett Stemberger, Dominic, Dylan, and Payden Teague, and Samantha Hedrick and great-grandchildren:  Kolten and Kimberly Cobb and Zoey Hedrick. Siblings: Ray (Mae) Stemberger, Roy (Mary) Stemberger, Jerry (Faye) Stemberger, Martha (the late Howard) Jones and countless other friends and family.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Fortuna Baptist Church, Fortuna MO.  Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. and services at 10:00 a.m. After the services the burial will be at the St. Andrews Catholic Cemetery in Tipton MO.
Condolences may be shared at www.marklandyager.com.
Markland-Yager Funeral Home of New Franklin is honored to serve the Stemberger Family.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of the person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services, donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication or platform.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Draft a rough outline with key details and then review it with family members or friends who knew the deceased well. This can help ensure accuracy and inclusiveness.

Can I use an obituary as a way to celebrate my loved one's life rather than just mourning their passing?

Absolutely! An obituary is an opportunity to share stories, memories, and achievements that highlight your loved one's unique spirit and contributions.
