Obituary Preview: C. Robert “Bob” Fitch, 76, of Cortland, NY, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021, at his home, while surrounded by his family.
Born in Cortland, NY, on July 27, 1944, Bob was the son of the late Charles George Fitch and Cora Barker Fitch.  He was a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church.  A 1962 graduate of Marathon Central School, he remained active throughout the years with his classmates.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard for 22 years.  He had also worked for several years at Smith-Corona and as a self-employed electrical engineer.  He was a  member of the Marathon Historical Society and worked many years as a volunteer for the Marathon Maple Festival.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, relaxing at the Orwell farm, and later in life, traveling the world.
He is survived by  his wife, together for 33 years, Dawn Ingrahm-Fitch; his children, Charles Fitch II of Cortland and Carrie Fitch of Houston, TX; and his stepchildren, Dustin Beaudoin of Cortland and Kristi Beaudoin of Ithaca.  He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Arianna, Jaden, Xander, Deakin, Mazon, and Ryker; a great-grandson, Amari; sisters, Mary Ann Tamm of Plano, TX and Martha DeMond of Kansas City, KS; a brother, Ray Fitch of Cortland; a cousin, Ron Fitch of Honolulu, HI; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY, on Friday, April 30, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  NY State Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.  Masks must be worn and social distancing will be in place.  Memorial services for Bob will be private.  Burial, with military honors, will be in Marathon Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Bob may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Wayne C. Gillette - April 15, 1951 - March 29, 2021

Obituary Preview: Wayne C. Gillette, 69, of McGraw, NY, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.
Wayne was born in Cortland, NY, on April 15, 1951, the son of the late Henry and Martha Bush Gillette.  A lifelong resident of the area, he retired from the NYSDOT and Suit-Kote after several years of service.  He was a former member of the McGraw Sportsmen Club and enjoyed, hunting, fishing and trapping.  He also enjoyed cutting wood, boiling sap, and cooking pigs.  A jack-of-all-trades, Wayne was a clever-minded man who spent many hours dreaming and building his own projects.
He is survived by his children, Kelli (Michael) Sweeney of Homer, Shawna (Stacy Reardon) Gillette of McGraw, Keith Gillette of Homer, Christopher Gillette of Cortland, Brittany Gillette of Cortland, and Michael (Jeanette Forsythe) Gillette of McGraw.  He also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; his former wife, Toni Falso Gillette of Blodgett Mills; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends too numerous to mention by name.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James and Keith Gillette; and his former wife, Jill Daugherty Rainbow.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no immediate services.  A Celebration of Wayne’s Life will be held at 3598 Clinton Street Ext., McGraw, NY, on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 1:00 p.m.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Wayne may be directed to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Obituary Preview: William Francis "Bill" Holland returned to the Lord on March 24, 2021.  We are deeply grateful for our wonderful family, friends and community for the support and laughs that greatly comforted Bill.
Born April 13, 1949 in Hancock, NY to John and Lois (Williams) Holland, Bill graduated from Susquehanna Community High School in 1967.  He served his country as a sergeant in the Air Force from 1968 to 1972 prior to focusing on his passion as a dairy farmer.  Bill began his career in farming in Thompson and then Pleasant Mount, PA.  In 1981 he started farming in Marathon, NY.  Bill was a member of St. Stephen’s Church and Tractors of Yesteryears.      Bill loved working the land, hunting, and watching his kids and grandkids play sports alongside his high school sweetheart and love of his life, wife Sandra L. (Collins).  Bill leaves behind his sons William (Kathleen) and James (Rose Ann), and daughter Rebecca (Michael New).  Known as Papa, “Buddies Forever,” he was idolized by his grandchildren:  Daniel and Olivia (Bill and Kathy); Eilie and Conor (Jim and Rose Ann); Cassandra, Annabelle, Savoy, Parker and Francis (Rebecca and Mike).

Obituary Preview: Earle D. Hubbard, 92, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY, after becoming ill at home.
Mr. Hubbard was born in Cincinnatus, NY, on June 13, 1928, the son of the late Harlow and Bessie Keator Hubbard.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955.  He retired from the Greek Peak Ski Resort where he had worked for 20 years.  In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time in his garden and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his sons, Raymond Hubbard of Delray Beach, FL, Ralph Hubbard of DeRuyter, Ronald Hubbard of DeRuyter, Randy (Julie) Hubbard of Marathon, and Richard Hubbard of DeRuyter.  He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Randy (Aaron) Hubbard, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Jodi (Stephen) Corl of Cortland, and Ryan Hubbard of Marathon; his great-grandchildren, Roland, Lilly, and Ava Corl; a sister, Bunny Jones of Cortland; a former brother-in-law, Doug Jones of North Carolina; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings Frank Hubbard, Emerson Hubbard, Marion Youngs, Margaret Adams, and Laura Carter.

JoAnn was born in Owego, NY, on August 5, 1944, the daughter of the late Max and Inza Underwood Hoffmier.  She retired from Borg Warner, Ithaca, where he had worked as a tensioner.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Bailey, and her children, Jack Williams of Cortland, Brian (Tami) Bailey of Marathon, and Yvonne Bailey of Marathon.  She also leaves behind nine grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, George Hoffmier of Berkshire and Gerald Clark of Georgia; a sister, Betty (Gary) Allen of Newark Valley; a sister-in-law, Lilian Hoffmier of Richford; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, John Hoffmier; and a sister, Delores Mosher.

Obituary Preview: Paul "Papa" C. Sturdevant, 94, of Lisle, NY, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY.
Born in Pitcher, NY, on April 12, 1926, Mr. Sturdevant was the son of the late Vern and Naomi Allen Sturdevant.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  A lifelong mechanic, he retired from Gault Chevrolet, Endicott, where he had worked as a master mechanic for many years.   He was always willing to lend a helping hand and he touched many lives during his lifetime and meant so many things to so many people.
He is survived by his children, Ronald (Debbie) Sturdevant of Texas, William (Tina) Sturdevant of Richford, Nancy (Greg) Lindeborn of Windsor, Dann (Wendy) Sturdevant of Cortland, and Thomas Sturdevant of Whitney Point.  He also leaves behind several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Carol, in 2006; two grandsons; and several siblings.
A graveside service will be held at the Lisle Cemetery at a later date.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Paul may be directed to a local food pantry or a community outreach program of your choice.

Obituary Preview: Judy C. George, 64, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY.
Judy was born in Cortland, NY, on April 23, 1956, the daughter of the late Vernon and Alice Moore Middleton.
She is survived by her children, Anita (Howard) Chamberlain of Cortland, Gerald "Spanky" Lockwood of McGraw, and Mickey Lockwood of McGraw.  She also leaves behind her siblings, Rick (Carol) Middleton of Marathon, Vernon Middleton, Jr. of Ithaca, Kathy (Delbert) Carr of McLean, and Melody Fisk of Groton; three grandchldren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents she was predeceased by a sister, Dawn, and a brother, Joe.

Wayne C. Fox - May 01, 1940 - October 23, 2020

Obituary Preview: On October 23, 2020 the Marathon community lost a devoted community member.  Wayne C. Fox, 80, passed away after a short battle with dementia. Wayne graduated from Gorham Central School in 1958. Wayne moved to Marathon as manager of Agway in 1967. He worked for Agway, Inc. for 30 years including previous stores in Hemlock and Dryden. Wayne purchased the Marathon Agway and ran it as Fox Hardware for 2 years. Following the closing, he started CNY Water Systems in 1996 until his retirement earlier this year.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, DeForest and Mary (Tyrrell) Fox; sons, Jeffery and Scott Fox; grandson, Bryant Sheppard, brother, Ronald Fox ; In-laws: Elwyn and Barbara Cornell,  James Cornell, Nancy Cornell, Fred Elston and Robert Niver.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Katie; daughters, Tina (Rick Clark) Fox – Dustin and Megan, Tami (Gary) Fox- Eric and Kyle, Marie (Dave) Abell – Ty and Kenna, Marci (Brandon) Sheppard- Brady and Manning. Siblings, David (Diane) Fox, Patricia (John) Sawers, James (Lynne) Fox, Carol (Thomas) Calabrese, Peggy (Dick) Hilton, Deborah (Kevin) Greek and sister-in-law Carol. In-laws, Cheryl Niver, Larry Cornell, Karen (Richard) Funk, Gary (Cathy) Cornell, Keith (Cheryl) Cornell, Deb (Dwayne) Contri and Janet Elston.
Wayne loved Marathon and he dedicated thousands of hours serving the community. The CNY Maple Festival started in 1971 with Wayne as the first chairman and one of the founders of the event. He continued to stay involved on the festival committee through the cancelled 2020 festival. Wayne looked forward to having his family assist him in the maple products trailer every year. They would all refer to Wayne’s handwritten schedule to see their assigned jobs and shift times. Along with the Maple Festival, Wayne was a 50-year member of the Lion’s Club, a commissioner of the Marathon Fire District since the inception in 1991; chairman of the civic building committee since it was built in 1971; a member of the Methodist Church, and coached many youth in Marathon Little League.
Wayne could strike up a conversation with anyone and loved telling stories, his 4-legged fur babies and making his famous whiskey sours. Watching his grandchildren play any sport brought such joy to his life. Most of all Wayne enjoyed his family. In 2019 Wayne, Katie , the Abells and the Sheppards checked something off Wayne’s bucket list, an Alaskan cruise. For a week the family enjoyed the beautiful sights of Alaska while spending quality family time together. Little did anyone know this would be his last family trip.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their excellent care of Wayne during his rapid decline from dementia. Also a special thanks to Brad Stevens, PA of Family Health Network for his loving care as his devoted medical provider.  Wayne will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community. Kindly raise a glass and toast a truly great man.

Steven G. Hall - August 24, 1958 - October 21, 2020

Obituary Preview: Steven G. Hall, 62, of Marathon, NY, finished his journey, returning to the arms of Jesus on October 21, 2020, at his home, while surrounded by his family.
Steve was born in Johnson City, NY, on August 24, 1958, the son of Bernard and Irene (Copeland) Hall.  He was a 1977 graduate of Marathon Central School, and active in athletics.  Steve, aka “Moose,” was the recipient of the Gerry McDonald Athletics Award, competed in sectional playoffs in soccer and basketball, and holds the school’s record in discus and shot putt.
Following graduation, Steve entered the Army where he proudly served until joining the Department of Corrections in 1983.  Steve worked the majority of his DOC career at Cape Vincent and Watertown Correctional Facilities, finding tremendous satisfaction working as a Crisis Intervention Team Officer.  After a 25-year career, he retired from the Cayuga Correctional Facility in January 2008.
Steve continued his love of community and sports with his participation in local golf, pool, and bowling leagues.  He was an avid outdoorsman, and valued time spent hunting with family and friends.  In the last few years, he found renewed pleasure as a hunter and sportsman while teaching his grandson, Evan, the joys of the sport. Steve worked hard to play hard.  He sought fun and the opportunity to be of service to others.  Anyone who knew Steve soon realized that there was no such thing as a stranger.  Leading with a warm smile, a strong handshake, and good-natured humor, Steve embraced life and all were welcome to join in.  In addition to family related by blood, Steve had many brothers and sisters related through heart and faith.  Central to Steve’s being was his love for God, his family and friends, the Hall farm, and our country!
Steve walked a faith-filled path in his battle with cancer; finding grace, strength, and peace.  He was a mountain of a man in stature, and through his growth in his faith in the Lord Jesus; he became even stronger, touching many lives.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Elizabeth (Atchie) Hall; stepchildren, Benjamin (Toni) Howard, and Daniel (Tasha) Howard; grandchildren, Ariel Tyler, Cora Howard, Evan Howard, and Lillian Howard; great-grandchildren, Parker and Thomas.  He is also survived by his mother, Irene Hall; siblings, Kenneth (Donna) Hall, Kathleen (Roger Santos) Hall, Cheryl (Larri) Leet, Darryl (Kaye) Hall, Lori (Thomas) Johnson, and Bryan (Veronica) Hall; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Steve was predeceased by his father, Bernard E. Hall (2015) and his brother, Russell L. Hall (1998).

Beverly R. Doty - April 16, 1933 - October 12, 2020

Obituary Preview: Beverly R. (Cobb) Doty, 87, of Willet, NY, went home to help Al with the chores on Monday, October 12, 2020, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.
Bev was born in Cincinnatus, NY, on April 16, 1933.  She was the daughter of Merton and Marjorie (Dietrich) Cobb.  Bev was a 1951 graduate of Cincinnatus Central School and married Alvin Doty, Sr., on July 1, 1951, in Cincinnatus.  Bev was a member of the former Willet Methodist Church where she enjoyed playing the piano and organ on Sundays and volunteering at the pancake breakfasts.  She also was a member of the Killawog Methodist Church.  Bev was a longtime employee of Grumman Boats in Marathon, NY.  She attended and volunteered at the Willet/Cincy Sr. Center where she had also served as a former treasurer.  She was a former volunteer for the Cortland County RSVP; and a longtime Willet Republican Committee representative.  Bev’s favorite past time was reading, knitting and crocheting and also donating her items to different organizations.
She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her son, Alvin, Jr. (Sandy) and his wife Anita.  She also leaves behind her loving granddaughter Jennifer (Matthew) Doty-Kemak and grandson, Jeffrey (Amy) Doty.  Her pride and joy are her great-grandchildren, Abigail Kemak, and Madeline and Tucker Doty; a brother, Robert (Gracie) Cobb; special nephew Marty (Joyce) Quarella; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alvin, Sr.; an infant son, Ronald; and her sister, Barbara Quarella.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY on Saturday, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  NY State Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.  Masks must be worn and social distancing will be in place.  Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, October 18, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. with Fred M.S. Sallie Ann Soshinsky - January 29, 1960 - October 07, 2020

Obituary Preview: Sallie Ann Soshinsky, 60, of McGraw, NY, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, after a kiss from her husband, with her family at her side.
Sallie was born in Cortland, NY, on January 29, 1960, the daughter of the late Robert and Sally (Falso) Gerrard.  A lifetime resident of the area, she had previously been employed at McGraw Box Company and retired from Cooper Tools.  She was a former member of the B.P.O.E., Cortland.  She loved country music and, in her younger years, enjoyed spending time at the Cortland Country Music Park.  She was an avid bowler and loved going to the Turning Stone Casino where she could be found playing bingo.  Even on days she didn’t win, she always made sure to tell her daughters that she felt like a winner by having them in her life.  A loving companion of 44 years and devoted mother of two beautiful daughters, who was well-known for her apple pie and pumpkin roll, she will be missed dearly by her family and friends.  Sallie was a unique and caring individual who will always be worshiped as a saint by her family and close friends.  She touched the lives of so many people; the legacy she has left behind is like no other.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, John Soshinsky, of McGraw; a daughter, Betsy (Bud Dixson) Soshinsky of McGraw; two precious twin boys, Madox and Mathew; and a daughter, Lisa Marie (Juan De La Rosa) Soshinsky of McGraw.  She also leaves behind a brother, Daniel (Susan) Gerrard of Glen Aubry; a sister, Phoebe (Mark) Piech of Lisle; a half-brother, Steven Soper; a half-sister, Stephanie (Kevin) Dean of Coventry; a sister-in-law, Charlene Seaman of FL; brothers—in-law, Gary Soshinsky of Cortland and Gregory Soshinsky of McGraw; aunts, Sandy Smith and Shirley (James) Burk of Marathon; an uncle, Carmen (Barbara) Falso of McGraw; great aunts, Mary Falso and Marjorie Baldassare; a special cousin Vicky (Ed) Falso; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Gerrard; grandparents, Dominick and Virginia (Barnes) Falso, and Daniel and Anna Belle Gerrard Merzke; and her mother-in-law, Hazel Soshinsky Berean.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY on Friday, October 16, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  NY State Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.  Masks must be worn and social distancing will be in place.  A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Cortland, on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Joseph Zareski, Celebrant.  Burial will be in McGraw Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Sallie may be directed to either McGraw United Methodist Church, McGrawville Baptist Church, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cortland County Music Park after the restrictions of Covid-19 have been lifted.

Cindy was born in Binghamton, NY, of March 26, 1956, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Chatrnuck) Dekar.  She retired from Cornell University after several years of service and was a member of the North American Spotted Draft Horse Club.
She is survived by her fiancee, Richard Bryan, and his family and friends; and a sister, Patricia Gilbert, of Ithaca.  She also leaves behind a niece, Jessie (Daniel) Salz of Boston, MA; an aunt, Eleanor Chatrnuck of New Jersey; and several cousins.

Obituary Preview: Paul Broyles was born in Hartfield, MO on October 21, 1932.  The impoverished life of this southern Missouri child did not deter Paul from serving in the U.S. Army and attending college at Southwest Missouri State.  His forgetfulness of a pencil in class one day introduced him to his life love, Phyllis Burton.  He worked full time and earned his bachelor’s degree in three years.  He was a model husband, father, citizen, Christian, and St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.  His only downfall was an imperfect game of golf, but his life successes brought a wealth of love to his family.  Paul worked as a financial specialist at Ford Motor Credit Company before moving to BB&T in Greenville for several years before retiring.  His legacy includes three successful and independent children with college educations, Paula Dawn Moore, Stuart Broyles, and Steven Broyles.  He loved visiting his grandchildren Cortland, Christopher, Katie, Connor, and J.B.  Paul loved bridge with friends in Florida, golf with family and friends, and spending a life with Phyllis.  He enjoyed vacationing with the family in Florida around Christmas time for the past few years.  Paul’s favorite memories included the original, full-length version of Dr. Zhivago, playing golf on the north shore of Hawaii, traveling the Hawaiian shoreline in a red convertible mustang, and a mile-long dessert bar at the Hawaiian hotel.  Paul enjoyed an occasional bourbon and club soda.  For all who have an imperfect golf game, the family hopes you will enjoy a bourbon on the 19th hole to celebrate Paul’s life and those whose legacy you carry on.   Paul had requested that memorial gifts be made to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research through the Department of Development (4500 San Pablo Blvd.  Jacksonville, FL 32224)

She is survived by her sister, Joanne (Joseph) Vega of Marathon; her nieces, Mary (Martin) Henninger of Marathon, Anne (Ido) Sela of Scarsdale, and Hope (Peter Carvelas) Vega of Binghamton; and a nephew, Henry (Tina) Vega of Endicott.  She also leaves behind several great nieces and great nephews.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Baez; and their sons, L.J., Chris, and Justin, all at home.  He also leaves behind his mother, Rosa Mateo and stepfather, Joe Vasquez; his brothers, Jose (Sally) Baez of NYC and Christopher Vasquez of California; his sisters, Miriam (Michael) Schaeffer and Wanda (Mario) Dibartolomeo, all of NYC; his mother-in-law, Faith Knickerson of Pennsylvania; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Ramon Baez, and a sister, Gladys Baez.

Bob was born in Cortland, NY, on October 4, 1941, the son of the late John D. and Thelma V. Underwood Stevens.  A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1959 graduate of Marathon Central School.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968.  He was a life member of the Marathon Fire Department, having served twice as Fire Chief, and was a former member of the Marathon Emergency Squad.  Throughout the years he had worked for Grumman Boats, United Parcel Service, Salisbury Fire Equipment and retired from Cortland County Buildings and Grounds.  In his spare time, Bob was a faithful and devoted follower of the Marathon Central School athletic program.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gwen Stevens; a son, Kevin Stevens; a grandson, Dylan Stevens; and the light of his life, his great-grandson, Jaxson Stevens, all of Marathon.  He also leaves behind a sister, Nancy Witty of Dryden; uncles, Warren (Pat) Underwood of Ithaca and Gary (Liz) Underwood of McGraw; an aunt, Sylvia Underwood, of McGraw; three nieces; and several cousins.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY, on Saturday, July 11, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  On recommendation from the New York State Funeral Directors Association, face masks will be required if social distancing cannot be maintained.  Private memorial services will be held at the conclusion of visitation.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Bob may be directed to MAVAC, P.O. In addition to his parents, Ralph and Patricia Canfield, he is survived by his brother, Corey (Kristin) Canfield, his sister, Amanda (Pedro) Canfield Silva; and his maternal grandmother, Valaire Jean Mayer.  He also leaves behind his uncles, Thomas and Gary Canfield; his aunts, Emma (Fred) Walker Canfield, Susan J. Canfield, Margaret Wheaton, Shelly (Don) Warnow, and Wendy Means; his nieces and nephews:  Arianna, Breyden, Caralia, Cooper, Kassidy, and Colton, who was born on his birthday, and many cousins, extended family and friends.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Griest; her mother, Eleanor Fiene; her stepfather, John Haines; and siblings, Dana Fiene, Al Sickles, Darrel Sickles, and Susan Sickles.

Corky was born in Lapeer on October 22, 1935, son of the late Norman N. and Mildred L. Gutchess Brown. A lifelong resident of the area, Corky was a member of the Marathon Central School graduating class of 1954.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Stengle Brown and his children; Lee (Kim) Brown of Lapeer, Suzanne (Michael) McCutcheon of Cortland, Melissa (Ward) Fox of Marathon, Jenna (Katherine Craig) Brown of Cortland and Daniel (Suzanne) Brown of West Chester, PA. Corky also leaves behind his stepdaughters Lisa Robertson of Syracuse and Jennifer Dovin of Binghamton, a sister Elinor Banks of Liberty, the mother of his children Jean E. Hansen of Marathon, daughter-in-law Natalie (Doscher Brown) Parker of Marathon, twenty-nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Allan J. Brown, sisters Marian Robinson, Laura Medchill and Leona Hudson and a brother Thomas Brown.
Corky was a member of Christ Community Church. He operated the family dairy farm for many years and also worked for Roger Beck, the Town of Lapeer and Big Toy (Kompan). He and Barbara operated L.B. Brown Haflingers, breeding, training and showing horses. Corky was a member of the Board of Directors of Dryden Mutual Insurance Company for forty-two years as well as serving on the Lapeer Town Board, the Marathon Central School Board, a member of Marathon Agway Local Committee and the Lions Club. He was also involved with several farm organizations including Dairymen’s League, GLF, NYABC and Cortland County Cooperative Extension.
Corky was an avid athlete and outdoorsman enjoying basketball, golf, bowling, softball, hunting and fishing. He was also an ardent follower of the NY Giants, SU and local high school sports. He spent many hours in his woodworking shop building everything from furniture to horse wagons. Corky was also very proud of having earned his pilot’s license.
The family will receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221E, on Friday, February 21st from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel on Saturday, February 22nd at 11 am with Corky’s son, Lee Brown, officiating. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Morton Building in Marathon. Internment will be at Parker Street Cemetery in the spring. Betty was born in Willet, NY, on May 11, 1933, the daughter of the late Christopher and Grace Brown McMahon.  A lifelong resident of the area, she was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Marathon, and had also attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Cincinnatus.  For the past few months, she was a resident of the Elizabeth Brewster House, Homer.  She retired from Polkville Crushed Stone after several years of service.  Prior to that, she had worked at the First National Bank of Cortland, Cincinnatus, Chris Craft Boat Company, Cortland, and Grumman Boat Company, Marathon.  She had also previously worked as a nurse’s aide for the Cincinnatus Central School.  In her younger years, she had attended SUNY Cortland and was proud to be the head majorette during her freshman year of college.  In her spare time, she was an avid bingo player and enjoyed her Friday afternoon board game gatherings with family and friends.  A loving mother and grandmother, Betty lived for her family.
She is survived by her children, Allie C. (Carlene) Potter, Sr., Timothy (Sally) Potter, and Gail (Michael) Parsons, all of Willet, and Theresa (Frank) Suits of Cortland.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Allie (Heather Young) Potter, Jr., Bradley (Meagan) Potter, Michael (Shawna Hulbert) Potter, Timothy (Cheryl) Potter, Scott (Jessica) Potter, Frank (Lucila) Suits, III, Peter Suits, Jennifer (Dave) McMasters, Katie (Denis) Niggli and Emily (James) Kissel; great-grandchildren, Trentin, Nolan, Kailee, Kendyl, and Timothy Potter, Hannah, Molly, and Benjamin McMasters, Mark and Ryan Niggli, Liliana Suits, Allison and Abigail Kissel, and two great-grandchildren on the way; her longtime friends since childhood, Margaret Pendell, Barb Lathrop Watrous, and Frances “Bunny” Schank.

She was predeceased by her mother, Sheila Burk, on February 7, 1998.
