The daughter of the late Tommy Joe and Effie Mae Stewart, Kathy had a servant's heart. In her college days, she was an active member of Morehead State University’s Baptist Student Union and went on several mission trips. In her most recent role as Community Based Services Director at MCCC, she spurred the expansion of current programs into the Central KY Region, opening a dedicated mental health outpatient treatment center in coordination with the Catholic Action Center and also assisted with the opening of Cliffview Recovery Center. “She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future. When not actively helping others, she enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family and friends as well as her standard poodle, Effie. Most notably her two children Tom Word (Caitlyn Johnson), Grayce Ransom (Perry Kitts, Jr.), and their father Richard Word; her siblings Tom (Andrea) Stewart and Beverly Stewart; a nephew Joseph Stewart; her close friend Malcom Brown; her doting maternal aunts; and her constant companion, a standard poodle named Effie.
