Howard L. Brooks - February 16, 1936 - May 12, 2024

Departed: 05/12/2024 (Maumee)
Obituary Preview: Howard L. Brooks, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Howard was born February 16, 1936, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Irene (Carr) Brooks and Howard L. Brooks, Sr. A graduate of Xavier University with a bachelor’s in chemistry, he worked as a technical manager at Wacker Silicones, earning six patents. After his retirement, he consulted for Silchem for 12 years. If you have ever driven a car, worn an adhesive name tag, or sewn with thread, you have used a product he influenced.
A lifelong putterer, Howard loved projects, from building a basement bar, to spending 18 months hand-crafting a dollhouse, to experimenting with chemicals on his secret basement lab bench. Fishing, travel, golf, bridge, double-solitaire, and euchre kept him entertained, along with as many visits to the casino as he could convince his wife to tolerate.
Listening to WJR all his life, he adored the Tigers, Pistons, and Lions, and he cheered for the Xavier Musketeers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He loved Florida winters, Michigan summers, and bragging about his grandchildren’s successes.
Howard was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1959-1965, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus at St. Joan of Arc Parish.
Howard is survived by his wife Renita M. (Walczak) Brooks. She will celebrate his memory on their 60th anniversary, May 30. They met at a Kentucky Derby Day Party in Fort Wayne in 1963 and were together ever since, through all life’s challenges and joys.
Howard is also survived by his children, Cari (Chuck Knepfle) Brooks and Tod (Yelena) Brooks; his grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Jalen (Emily Coleman) Brooks-Knepfle, Charlie (Elia Despradel) Brooks-Knepfle, Anna Brooks-Knepfle, Josephine Brooks, Jamisen Brooks, Nikita Ashcherkin, and David Kucher; and his sister, Barbara (Brooks) Perriguey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon (Brooks) Wiesen Wiles.
Family and friends may visit May 17, 2024, from 10-11 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd. The Funeral Mass for Howard will follow in the church at 11 am. Howard will be laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery.
The family is grateful to the neighbors who have supported Howard and Renita. Donations may be made in Howard’s memory to the American Diabetes Association.

Jack W. Berry, Sr. - October 16, 1930 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Maumee)
Obituary Preview: Jack W. Berry Sr, passed away in his Maumee home, during the wee hours of Sunday morning, April 28, 2024, with all his children very nearby and vigilantly taking turns looking in on him. He fought a long and hard battle with renal failure but did it on his terms, having made the decision to forgo dialysis, and to let go and let God. And God decided to take our Dad home exactly six months to the day that He took our Mom home. So, our beloved parents are rejoicing in each other's arms once again.
Jack Sr. was born on October 16, 1930, to Mary (Savory) Pringle Berry Stanford and Edward Berry, in Perrysburg, OH. He lived in and attended Perrysburg schools through the 7th grade. After his parents divorced, his Mother moved her 5 boys to Maumee. Being a single mother of 5 children in the 30's and 40's was hard and the family moved many times and the boys often got split up, living with various friends and relatives and for a couple years we're in and out of different school systems.
At one point the family had an apartment upstairs, one door over from Dale's Bar in Maumee. Jack loved to tell the story of how he snagged a job as a young boy, working for Dale restocking the beer coolers and other odd jobs in the bar for a couple quarters and a hamburger.
For unknown reasons, during the end of the 8th grade, Jack moved back to his Dad's, in Perrysburg. But he was determined to continue attending and graduate from Maumee so for the remainder of his high school years, he got up every morning and walked from his Dad's house in Perrysburg to Maumee High School (now Maumee Middle School) and back home again.
He was the first of his siblings to graduate high school, an achievement he always credited to his love of sports, not the love of education. He excelled in sports, lettering in both Varsity Football and Track. He held the school record for Pole Vault, which was significant for that time because the poles were made of an unbending wood, not fiberglass that athletes have the advantage of using in the sport today. Jack proudly graduated from Maumee High School in 1949.
After graduation, he worked as a Drill Press Operator and Trucker for Gendron Wheel Co. in Perrysburg, OH.
Soon after, in 1951, Uncle Sam came knocking and Jack was drafted during the Korean War. After completing Basic Training in Fort Knox, Kentucky, he traveled by ship to Germany and proudly served his country in the US Army in Kitzingen, Germany in the 544th Armor, USAR, serving as a Tank Driver and Gunner, advancing to rank of Corporal. He was Honorably Discharged in 1953, and moved back to his Dad's in Perrysburg, OH.
Soon after coming home, he met the love of his life, Carol Sabo, also of Perrysburg. Ironically, Carol lived with her parents, about 6 houses down the street from Jack's Dad. They started dating, had a somewhat dramatic courtship, then ended up eloping on September 3, 1955, in The Chapel in the Garden in Angola, IN. They had just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary before Carol passed away in October of 2023.
After they married, Carol's Father got Jack an interview with the company he was employed with and in late 1957, Jack joined the United Glassworkers Local No. 9, (in later years became, Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union, Local 9) and landed his permanent position at Libby Owens Ford Glass Company, where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1990. He took a few years off before realizing retirement wasn't really for him. Then at the age of 65, found his dream job of working in the bag room at Belmont County Club in Perrysburg. He worked there another 14 years and wouldn't have left if it hadn't started taking a toll on him physically. But, boy, did he love that job, the staff, and the members of that club!
He also loved to play golf, horseshoes, and go camping with his family in his 5th Wheel. He was an avid fisherman and was an excellent bowler, having won many league championships, held high game, high series, and high average honors. One of Jack's highest achievements was rolling a perfect 300 game at Interstate Lanes in Rossford. And his perfect game was back in the 80's when perfect games still meant something because bowling balls back then weren't made of the high-tech materials they are today.
Later in life he became a voracious reader of all subjects becoming one of the most intelligent men you could meet. He also loved to do crossword puzzles and won every Trivia Pursuit and Scrabble game the Berry family played.
Jack and his late wife, Carol were 66-year members of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg, OH, where Jack served as an Usher for many years. Church members and friends would line up around the parking lot for Jack's famous BBQ Chicken year after year at the annual Ice Cream Social.
Jack was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Maumee for many years and was a current Lifetime Member of the Maumee Elks Lodge #1850. He and Carol could be seen socializing weekly with friends at the Elks Lodge.
Jack's greatest achievement was the love he had for his wife and four children. It was evident in his selfless ways and the love, respect and adoration given back to him. Preceding Jack Sr in death are both parents, his beloved wife of 68 years, Carol Lou (Sabo) Berry; Half Sister, Marie (Harold) Shaul; Half Brothers, James Pringle, Richard (Eddie) Pringle,
Robert (Betty) Pringle; and Brother, Duane (Janet) Berry. Surviving are his adult children, Jack Berry, Jr., Joyce Berry, Julie Berry, and Jeff (Chrissy) Berry; Brothers-in-Law, Richard (Debbie) Sabo and Larry Sabo; Sister-in-Law, Janelle Karsten;
Many Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Great Nephews. Also special to Jack Sr are Jay and Pastor Grace Brooks and Pastor Jim Caldwell. And with over a 50-year friendship, Max and Helen Kinkaid.
The Berry family would like to give extra special thanks to Hospice Home Care of NW Ohio, (especially Anita) who made herself available to us 24/7 for questions and concerns and the complete staff who provided exceptional care and compassion to our Dad for almost five months. We don't have the words to express our gratitude.
Visitation in the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee, will be Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 2-7 pm and Friday, May 17, 2024, from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Service at 11 am. Interment will immediately follow at Ft. Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg.

David Edward Scherting - February 06, 1957 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Maumee)
Obituary Preview: David Scherting, age 67, of Waterville, Ohio died peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the Toledo Hospital. He was born February 6, 1957, in Toledo to the late Harry and Grace (Mohr) Scherting and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1975.
While a Sophomore at Central, Dave met his future bride, Peggy Halleron, and the couple married on June 16, 1979. They lived 34 wonderful years together before Peggy’s passing in 2013. Dave visited Peggy’s grave every day and missed her dearly. There is consolation in the knowledge that they are again united.
Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from the University of Toledo in 1987. He went on to a more than 40-year career in information technology, just retiring on March 31 from Lucas County Children’s Services. He spent much of his time as the director of IT at the former Foodtown stores, a job he always loved.
In his free time, Dave was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering on his Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Aside from watching sports, Dave enjoyed coaching various CYO sports teams. Dave will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and his charitable, giving nature. He was sociable and outgoing and never knew a stranger, making friends wherever he went. Dave found his greatest joy in spending time with his family; particularly watching his beloved grandchildren.
Colin, Eloise and Magnolia were the light of Dave’s life. He could be seen sitting in the driveway for hours just watching them play. He enjoyed sending them random Amazon packages, bringing over scratch off lottery tickets for the kids to help him scratch (even though he already scanned the bar code and knew which were winners) and had plenty of snacks for Eloise to eat in his car. He relished his time picking up Colin from school and often would take him to visit Peggy at the cemetery, taking their chocolate shakes from McDonalds along with them. You can often hear Colin singing “Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys” – a song Dave has sung to all the kids since they were born.
Left to cherish Dave’s memory are his children, Andrew Scherting (Lindsey) and daughter, Anna Scherting (fiancé, Angelo Dechellis); siblings, Mary Busdicker (Chuck), Sandra Godrey, Joe Scherting, Steve Scherting (Cindy), Cindy Cappandora (fiancé, Daniel Vasquesz), Marcia Gentry (Beau), and Jeff Scherting (Robin); brother-in-law, Scott Woodson; many other in-laws who Dave loved like his own; and a large group of dear friends. He was also preceded in death by siblings Beth Woodson and John Scherting; niece, Samantha; and nephew, Adam.
Family and friends may call at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 2-8 p.m., with the recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin with prayers in the funeral home on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Jackie Dennis “Jack” Wozniak, age 78 years, of Maumee, Ohio
With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Jack Wozniak, our beloved dad, husband to his late wife Sharon, brother, and grandpa (Ampa). Jack departed this world on Monday, April 8, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. Though the battle was brief, his strength and resilience were truly remarkable. He continued to show his strength and wit, sharing his humor with those around him during his final days.
Born on September 29, 1945, Jack was a proud Navy veteran. He retired from Chrysler in his 50's and he and Sharon moved to Baldwin, Michigan. There, they lived on Hamlin Lake for many years before moving back to Toledo to be closer to their family.
Jack will be remembered for his outgoing personality, wit, humor, and his roles as husband, friend, brother, father, grandfather, and neighbor. His passions included wood carving, fishing, exercising at the YMCA, spending time with his best buddy and grandson, Jack Tanner, sharing crude jokes, and above all, being there for his daughters. In his final days, when asked what he was most proud of, he said, 'my daughters’. Knowing our dad meant receiving a kiss on the lips and a big hug at every hello and good-bye. He was married to his beloved wife, Sharon Wozniak, for 52 years. With Sharon's recent passing, it seems they were destined to reunite.
Jack is survived by his daughters Amy Tanner (David) and Tara Wozniak (Mike Rochford); his sister Sharon Blalock; his brother Terry Wozniak (Karen); and grandchildren Kate, Jack, Erin, and Elizabeth (Evan). He is preceded in death by his wife Sharon, father Wallace Wozniak, mother Marie Miskow and Sharon’s parents Stan and Louise Morton.

William Santry - June 15, 1961 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Maumee)
Obituary Preview: William Gerard Santry, born in Cork, Ireland June 15 1961, left this world March 10, 2024 at the age of 62 in his home in Maumee, Ohio, surrounded by his family. He was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2021, and despite his initial short prognosis, with his fighting spirit, he was able to give his family an additional 2 years of time with him.
William was born to his loving parents Mary and Michael Santry and was the favorite baby brother to his 3 sisters Mary, Anne, and Bernadette, whom he loved dearly.
William spent his youth playing Irish sports. He was a talented hurley and football player for his club St. Finbarr’s (The Barrs) in Cork Ireland. He also completed the Cork City Marathon in 1982, which he lovingly, and regularly, flaunted to his less accomplished runner children and relatives.
William attended Morning Star Primary in Ballyphehane and Colaiste Eamann Ris Secondary School. He then completed his apprenticeship at Cork Regional Technical College before immigrating to the United States in 1983.
He spent a short period living in Boston working in construction and tending bars. He then found an opportunity which led him to Toledo, Ohio, where he met the love of his life Kathy.
William and Kathy had two beautiful children, Aileen and Michael, whom he loved dearly. He worked hard to provide them with every opportunity.
He was employed by Lucas Metropolitan Housing (LMHA) for 33 years, where he worked to improve living conditions in public housing as an inspector, maintenance, and manager. As a licensed Remodeling Contractor, he rehabbed homes for Neighborhood Revitalization, and with his family, taking great pride in his work. William and Kathy were the original HGTV couple.
William was a very supportive father who rarely missed his children’s baseball games or horse shows. He always gave positive words of encouragement to them and their teammates, which were often lost on them due to his thick Irish brogue.
His greatest source of pride was being a loving husband and father, and he remained as such until the end. He was a selfless, loving, and hilarious man, and an infinitely positive source of light in everyone’s life. We are all blessed to have known him.
Preceded in death by his parents Michael and Mary Santry, and sister Bernadette Hurley. William will be lovingly remembered by his Wife Kathaleen (nee Fallon), his children Aileen and Michael, his sisters Anne (John O’Donoghue), Mary (Nicky Myers), (Gay Hurley, husband to Bernadette), and many nieces and nephews.

Judith E. Debo - December 26, 1938 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Maumee)
Obituary Preview: Judith “Judy” Elizabeth Debo, passed away on March 10, 2024, at the age of 85. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 26, 1938, to Clair Allen and Helen Bonniel (Kroetz) Parish. Growing up in Maumee, Judy attended grade school at Union school, where she first met her forever friends, Donna, Nancy and Lala. These friendships lasted a lifetime, and she fondly recalled many memories and stories from her time spent with them. She graduated from Maumee High School in 1956. Having been a good academic student, she liked to recall how she failed gym class because she never showed up. She never considered herself an athlete and felt like the gym uniforms they were required to wear were just not flattering. Upon graduation, Judy chose Miami University to further her studies. She said at the time it required her to take the train from downtown Toledo, only to then have to transfer onto a bus, and then finally a taxicab in order to get to campus in Oxford, Ohio. While at Miami she studied both Spanish and French and wanted to use her language skills to be an interpreter at the United Nations. Instead, after graduation, she came back home to Maumee and was set up on a blind date which her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Judi Parish, along with her future brother and sister-in-law, Vince and Judy Debo, set up for her. She met Robert “Bob” Debo and while this fact cannot be confirmed, it is quite possible their first date was going out to get a cup of coffee. He was tall and handsome and as her mother said to her, “Don’t let this one get away.” She didn’t…and they were married on October 3, 1964. They spent over 50 years together until Bob’s passing in 2018.
Judy worked for many years at the former State Home Savings Bank, first in Maumee and then in Swanton, Ohio. After retiring, Judy and Bob decided to move out to Swanton where Judy worked at the Swanton Area Chamber of Commerce organizing the holiday parades and the summertime parties in the park. She also worked at the Swanton Public Library which wasn’t really a job because she loved being around books and had a passion for reading.
Judy loved to travel making trips to Ireland, Great Britain, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. Of all her trips, Ireland was her dream and she talked about returning all the time. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren on trips, with her most favorite being Greenfield Village.
In 2009, Judy decided to embrace Catholicism and became a full member of the Catholic Church.
Judy is survived by her children John (Melissa) Debo, Mary (James) Scott, and Michael (Amy) Debo; grandchildren, Tristan, Zach, Molly, Ellie, Caroline, Tessa, Isabel, Claire and Stella. She is preceded in death and now reunited with her husband, Robert Debo; parents, Clair and Helen Parish; and brother, Jerald Parish.
Judy’s family would like to extend special gratitude to her caretakers at Elizabeth Scott Community, who were not just caregivers, but true friends and family.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St, Maumee, on Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., where a rosary service will take place at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway St, Maumee, on Friday, March 15, at 10:30am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They can also help families process their grief by sharing memories and stories about their loved one.

Who writes an obituary?
