Obituary Preview: Dr. Ivan J. Bobier passed away on May 17, 2024, six months shy of his hundredth birthday. At the time, he was a resident of Pompton Plains, New Jersey.Ivan Jerome Bobier was born in Manhattan on November 1, 1924, the son of Gustave and Tillie Bobier. He grew up with his sister, Shirley, with extended family near-by, in what was at the time a tight-knit Jewish community in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Life in New York City at that time would be unrecognizable to most people today: ice (for refrigeration) and coal (for heat) were delivered to homes by horse-drawn carts. For young Ivan, like much of the country, evening entertainment often consisted of families gathered around a radio to listen to live programs; televisions had yet to come into existence.Dr. Bobier spent his youth in Manhattan and in Long Beach on Long Island. He often spoke of body surfing with friends in the Atlantic Ocean and fashioning boogie boards out of scrap wood. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx and earned an undergraduate degree at New York University. He attended the University of Buffalo dental school where he met the love of his life and wife of an astonishing 77 years, Edie Labb.Ivan enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, served two hitches stateside in the medical corps, and attained the rank of Captain. After the war, he practiced dentistry for approximately fifty years, most of the time in the diverse Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. He was devoted to his patients and his practice. He worked Saturdays and evenings because he knew that so many of his patients were working people who did not have the option or ability to take a weekday off for a dental appointment. He was a neighborhood fixture, called “Doc” by many, and tended to the needs of several generations of local families—some of his older patients brought a younger family member with them to serve as an interpreter for one of the many languages spoken in the neighborhood.Ivan and his wife Edie raised four boys who gave him the nickname “the President.” Ivan was a devoted family man and among the last of a near-endangered species: a gentleman. Unfailingly polite, generous to a fault, and always reliable. He not only took care of his wife and children but also his mother who was widowed at an early age, never remarried, and lived into her nineties. Ivan’s routine was like clockwork: breakfast with the family, a quick read of the sports section of the New York Times, and off to the office. He usually worked so late that he missed the first round of dinner at home. Because he worked on Saturdays, he took Fridays “off.” On Fridays, he took his mother food shopping and his boys out to a local burger joint for lunch, and squeezed in whatever errands were necessary. Ivan would take the family to visit his mother on Sundays and called her every night when he didn’t see her. After his late dinner “the President” would retire to his desk, where he did his daily paperwork and bookkeeping, and phone his mother. She supplied the vast majority of “conversation” while Ivan kept the old-style phone cradled between his ear and shoulder and did an awful lot of listening. His daily duties done, the President would sit in the family den and work his way through two newspapers. Ever the optimist, he watched many Knicks and Mets games with the family.The beach was his true respite. He loved nothing more than a brisk walk with Edie on the beach, listening to the waves of the Atlantic pound the shore. Together, they would enjoy an annual retreat from the New York winters by taking trips to Florida and Mexico.Dr. I.J. Bobier is survived by his partner in life and wife of 77 years, Edie; his sons Gregg (Karen), Kevin (Jann), Keith (Lynn), and Blair (Karla); two nieces; a nephew; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and countless close cousins, mainly through Edie’s extended New England-based Labb family. Obituary Preview: Alejandro Dominguez was born February 3, 1931 in Carlisle, WV to Francisco Dominguez Martin, a coal miner, and Gumersinda Tarano Priede. Soon after, the family moved back to Andalucia in southern Spain where his father died. They then moved to his mother’s native Asturias in northern Spain and then Galicia, living in both in rural villages. Alejandro followed his older sister Maria and her husband to Newark, NJ in the 1950s. He met his future wife, Melia Rios, at Casa Galicia in New York. They married January 5, 1956 and moved to Pequannock a couple of years later. He was a self-employed mason and carpenter, and later worked as a machinist at Crown Cork and Seal. From humble beginnings, Alejandro and Melia raised a family of four, all of whom earned college degrees and enjoyed meaningful careers. Alejandro was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed raising hunting dogs and chickens, watching tennis, hockey and other sports, and grew amazing vegetables. Mostly, he loved being with his family. In his retirement, he enjoyed household improvement projects for his and other families. In his spare time, he also rehabilitated Alex’s 3-story building in Baltimore, built sheds and custom made boats. When he built or repaired something, it lasted for generations. He will forever be missed and remembered by his son Alex, daughters Lisa, Cindy and Isabel, sons-in-law Scott Smith and Robin Jones, brother Frankie, grandchildren Lily, Andrea, Ryan and Sean, and many nephews, nieces and grand nieces and nephews. Predeceased are his sisters Maria Rodriguez and America Tielve. Friends and family are welcome to meet at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday. They were perfect traveling companions; always open to seeing what was up around “the next corner”. After her husband passed, Dolores continued traveling. She enjoyed numerous river boat cruises in Europe and of course, more than one return to Ireland.She was preceded in death by her husband William A. Moore and Helen Newman Moore.Ruth is predeceased in death by her husband, Jerome (Jerry) Feeney, with whom she enjoyed a 50 year marriage; and her two siblings, Harold Moore and Arthur James Stevensen. She is survived by her three children, Kevin and his wife, Ann; Brian and his wife, Stacey; and Sharon Feeney Snook and her husband, Edward. Eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren always put a light in Ruth’s eyes.Ruth and her mother settled in Paterson, New Jersey when she was a teen. Years later she met her future husband and they married in 1948. The newlyweds settled in Clifton where Ruth resided until 2020. During that time she was a devout member of St George RC Church where she served as a member of the Rosary Society.For twenty three years Ruth worked as a clerk for what she always called the “Telephone Company,” also known as New Jersey Bell and Bell Atlantic.Ruth and Jerry enjoyed their retirements traveling the world, where their favorite thing to do was to take endless cruises and dance the night away.Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, May 8 at Scanlan's Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. He was 80 years old.Peter was born on February 15, 1944, in Paterson, NJ, to Nicholas and Tena (Burggraaff) Hoitsma. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in Wayne, NJ. Peter attended Eastern Christian High School and later served in the US Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of Specialist E4 before receiving an Honorable Discharge. In 1971, he married Louise Holopikian, and they had two children, Tena and Charles. Peter was a fun-loving, devoted father and a proud grandfather to his three grandchildren: Michael, Olivia, and Penelope.For 26 years, Peter was Vice President and Shop Manager of Hoitsma Adjustable Scaffold Bracket Company, a family business in Paterson, NJ, established by his inventor grandfather, working beside his brother Ernest. Peter was not only his grandfather’s namesake; he also possessed a knack for innovation and ingenuity. Later, Peter began a second career as a bus driver for the Pequannock Township School District, where he worked for over 16 years.
