It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased writes the obituary with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a draft, which is then reviewed and revised by the family before publication.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic details such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service information. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed biography and tribute to the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

To submit an obituary for publication, you'll typically need to contact the newspaper or online platform directly and provide them with the written notice and any accompanying photos. Be sure to check their submission guidelines and deadlines in advance.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this is not always possible, especially if it has already been printed in a newspaper. It's essential to review the notice carefully before submission to ensure accuracy.

How long are obituaries kept online?

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, you can include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. This allows mourners to make contributions in memory of the deceased if they wish.
