Terryl Dixon Kane - March 31, 1940 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: Terryl Dixon Kane, beloved wife, sister, mother, nana, and grandnana, passed away peacefully on April 18 at the age of 84, with her family by her side. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and cherished memories.
Terry was born in Akron, Ohio, on March 31, 1940 to parents Alfred and Audrey Dixon, and along with siblings Beverly (deceased) and Alfred Jr, grew up on a small farm in Walled Lake, Michigan. Her early years on the farm caring for her horses and other animals instilled in her a deep connection to nature and a strong work ethic that she carried with her throughout her life.
She attended Central Michigan University, where she met James Kane, the love of her life. Their marriage of 64 years was a testament to their enduring bond and unwavering commitment to each other.
Together, Terry and Jim raised a beautiful family and created a home filled with warmth and laughter. They welcomed four children into their lives: Lisa (Bruce) Low, Mike Kane (deceased), Colleen (Paul) Jorgensen, and Dixon (Beth) Kane. Terry's love and devotion to her family knew no bounds, and she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to their well-being and happiness.
Her role as Nana to six grandchildren: Jennifer (Jon) Nuoffer, Evan (Alexis) Jorgensen, Erica (Tricia) Everett, Chelsea (Kiel) Darling, Graham (Riley Petersen) Low, and Harrison Kane brought her immense joy. She took delight in watching them grow, sharing stories, making music and creating lasting bonds.
Her role as Grandnana to ten raised the bar on being able to impart wisdom across generations while taking in the joy of cuddling babies, sharing hugs and listening to their stories. Terry cherished every moment spent with her great-grandchildren, enjoying her 84th birthday with them there to blow out the candles as one example of how she was always creating precious memories.
Throughout her life, Terry made an impact on those around her. In Pleasant Ridge, where she lived for 24 years, Terry and Jim raised their family, attending many school events, swim meets, band concerts, and sporting events in support of their kids. Terry continued to play tennis and nurtured a variety of beloved pets (and many strays), showcasing her deep affection for animals.
Her love for life was also evident during her 18 years in Sugar Springs, Gladwin, where she enjoyed being a part of women’s golfing leagues, taking pontoon rides, and sharing in camaraderie as a member of the Go Getters and Sacred Heart Church.
In Brighton, where she lived for the past 14 years, she was a member of the community, finding comfort and friendship at St. Mary Magdalen Church and in the last year at Independence Village Brighton Valley.
Terry's passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift. We’ll all remember to make sure babies have T-shirts on for warmth and pets have a water bowl wherever they are in case they are thirsty. We will think about what the weather is each day and recall the many times Mom’s/Nana’s/Grandnana’s reminders about what to wear outside were always right. We will miss making sure we called her when we got home to let her know we had arrived safely. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on through her family and the countless lives she touched.
A celebration of Terry's life will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2201 S Old US Hwy 23, Brighton, MI 48114, where friends and family will gather for a visitation 10-11 a.m., followed by a service and luncheon to honor her memory and share stories of her remarkable life.

Therese Louise Grabowski - July 29, 1945 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Brighton)
Obituary Preview: Therese (Terri) Louise Grabowski, 78, of Howell, Michigan, passed away on March 14, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing.
Terri was born on July 29th, 1945 to Florence and Jose de Jesus Muñoz in Battle Creek, Michigan. She was the second of 8 children and was raised in Detroit. Terri graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit in 1963 and by June of that same year started working at Michigan Bell, where she worked for her entire career (through the company changes to Ameritech and AT&T) working her way from a telephone operator to computer programmer.
On December 14, 1963, Terri met the love of her life, Jan Frank Grabowski, at a friend’s basement party. After just one look, Jan told everyone “that one’s mine!” They were married October 20th, 1967. They were together 43 years until Jan’s passing in 2010.
Jan and Terri wanted to have children and ultimately chose the path of adoption, welcoming Michael John in 1973 and Amanda Nicole in 1976. Terri always said that she loved both of her children “from the moment they were put in my arms.” Jan and Terri moved to Canton, Michigan where they raised Mike and Mandy until outgrowing the Canton house. They then built their “dream home” in Milford, Michigan, where they stayed until Mike and Mandy were in college.
In the 43 years Jan and Terri were together, they made a lot of friends and rarely ever spent a weekend at home. Jan was part of the Great Lakes Sportsmen Club (GLSC) which introduced Terri to “the farm” in Kaleva, Michigan, forging lifelong friendships. Jan also bought a boat, naming it “Fiesta” in honor of Terri’s Mexican heritage. They bought a share of the Leamington Lighthouse Club in Leamington, Ontario in 1990, initially to join some friends from the GLSC, although it spawned many new friendships and a lot of time on the beach.
Once the kids were off and on their own, Jan and Terry bought a second home in The Villages in Florida. Their days were often filled with various activities and golf on the picturesque courses. As the sun set over The Villages, Jan and Terri could be found hanging out and dancing to the nightly talent at the town square. As Jan’s health started to decline, they moved back to Michigan full time, settling in Howell, where they embraced a slower pace, surrounded by the beauty of nature, the warmth of community and the joy of each other’s company.
After Jan’s passing, Terri spent her time doting over her grandchildren, Matthew, Brandon, Anna and Rachel as much as she possibly could. She was the “glue” of her family, insisting that every birthday or holiday was spent together as a family. She also spent a lot of time with her friends, who she treasured and loved. Terri always said that she was so blessed and lucky to have such amazing, loving, and kind friends in her circle. Terri always made sure to tell everyone how much she “loved them more” and was always doing things to demonstrate this.
Terri found profound comfort in her faith, especially during times of adversity. Her trust in God's plan never wavered, serving as a source of strength and hope for those around her. Her unwavering belief in the power of prayer and the promise of eternal life sustained her through life's trials and tribulations. She also learned how to lean on her family and friends for support, even though she struggled at times with feeling like a burden. Her family and friends showed her how much they loved her and that each one of them would move mountains to help her in any way possible. This is indicative of the influence and love she has shared with so many.
Terri participated in a clinical trial for the drug Tarlatamab. While it wasn’t effective treatment for her at her stage and progression of cancer, doctors were able to learn a ton from her participation. Her decision to participate in the trial was a testament to her bravery and selflessness, embodying her belief in the power of hope and the importance of leaving a positive impact on the world. The drug is going to market and doctors are hopeful it will save many lives. If you come upon an article or hear anything about the drug saving lives, be sure think of Terri.
Terri was a beacon of love, strength, and compassion throughout her life. She touched the hearts of everyone she met with her infectious laughter, warm smile, and unwavering kindness. Her determination and resilience in the face of adversity inspired all who knew her. While we mourn the loss of Terri's physical presence, we take comfort in knowing that she has been called home to be with her Heavenly Father. May her legacy of faith continue to inspire us all, reminding us of the power of belief, the beauty of redemption, and the promise of eternal life.
Therese is survived by her two children, Michael (Julie) and Mandy, her grandchildren, Matthew, Brandon, Rachel and Anna and her siblings, Joseph Munoz (Carol), Joan Sheehan (Tim), Margaret Gonzales (Fred), Mary Munoz, Robert Munoz (Toni). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, dear friends and her granddogs, Buddy, Frankie Lou and Charlie Two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and type of notice. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and to ensure that their life story is told accurately. This can be a therapeutic exercise and a unique opportunity for self-reflection.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more details about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include stories, quotes, or humorous moments that capture their personality and spirit.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections within a certain timeframe, while others may not permit changes once it's gone live.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the medium. Online platforms may publish immediately or within hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I request corrections or changes to an existing obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They'll do their best to make changes promptly.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's passing publicly, you can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary. This might be suitable for small families or those who prefer discretion.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

In general, it's best to obtain permission from the original publisher before republishing an obituary. However, if you're sharing it on social media or among close family and friends, this might not be necessary.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?

Yes! When writing an obituary for a veteran, consider including their military service details, awards, and accomplishments. You may also want to mention any special recognition or honors they received during their service.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries that maintain historical records. Some online platforms also offer searchable databases of past obituaries.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's obituary?

Yes! Consider creating a digital archive of your loved one's obituary by saving it as a PDF or printing it out for safekeeping. You can also share it with family and friends via email or social media.

Is it appropriate to include negative information in an obituary?

In general, it's best to focus on celebrating your loved one's life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on negative aspects. Obituaries should be respectful and tasteful tributes.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a convenient way to share news of a passing with friends and acquaintances. Just be sure to follow each platform's guidelines and respect any privacy settings.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Taking care of yourself during this difficult time is crucial. Consider enlisting help from a trusted friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or counselor if needed.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with your loved one's spirit and values.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

DOUBLE-check facts like dates, names, and spellings before submitting the obituary. It's also helpful to have multiple people review it for errors before publication.
