Barbara Lynn Byrd - April 03, 1948 - May 19, 2024

Departed: 05/19/2024 (Clawson)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Lynn Byrd passed away May 19, 2024. She was 76 years old. Lynn was born April 3, 1948, in Orange, Virginia, to Joseph & Loretta Daiek (nee Sirois).
The oldest of nine children (all of whom were boys until her first sister came along when she was 16), Lynn was born to take groups of unruly children and guide them to a less unruly state (a talent she monetized by becoming a teacher). She did all the things one might expect, college (University of Dayton & Marygrove), marriage (the classic a waitress and a line cook fall in love over the order window love story), children (one with a gift for words, one who kicked a ball good enough to turn it into a successful business; like her, neither can math), etc.
Though often accused by her family of rewriting history when retelling stories, she was remarkably consistent where it counted. She was kind and welcoming to everyone she met. She would give you the coat off her back (especially if you’d just moved from Florida and had no winter gear). She made people feel included right from the start. She was genuinely interested in what you had to say rather than just waiting for her turn to talk. She had a way of seeing so clearly the underlying reason for someone’s behavior and made them feel safe (again, great skill for a teacher). Many people are kind and compassionate, but Lynn had that glow that made you feel special just sharing her space. She just had that little something extra that drew people in and made them happy.
Lest you think she was destined for sainthood, she could be spicy. Pancake House coworker Crazy Larry called her Woodstock Chick, not knowing that she thought it was miserable (“We were stuck there! I couldn’t find my friends, and there was nothing to eat. They gave you a Dixie cup of oats, Marissa! Oats!”). She invented a game called The Queen has a Headache, so she could rest during the afternoon kindergarten session. One year her entire teaching goal (submitted to her boss) was, “no fighting, no biting.” She had a habit of starting major home improvements the second Gerry left town (caught in the act only once when a trip to Brazil was unexpectedly cancelled).
She had many rich friendships and relationships that she maintained and nurtured, most important of which were with her family. She was an incredible mother, but man, she loved being Mimi. Her five grandchildren were her entire world, and we are eternally grateful she was able to meet number five the day before her accident. She would likely have spent her remaining time on earth going into debt doting on them (and her children and husband to a lesser degree. Like, much less). Though in recent years life kept Dzia-Dzia chopping her down, she kept getting up with a smile on her face and nary a ‘woe is me’ thought in her head. She loved her life. She loved all of us. And she loved all of you, too.
She is survived by husband Gerry, daughter Marissa Byrd-Cairns (Keith), son Aaron (Lisa), grandchildren Madelyn, Brayden, Emmalyn, Mason, & Addison, and her eight siblings & many nieces and nephews.
Friends may gather at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks, Saturday, June 1, 2024, 1pm until Memorial Service at 3pm. In memory of Lynn, please consider supporting a student or teacher in some way (school supplies, lunch bill, etc.)

Joan Konno - January 29, 1933 - May 08, 2024

Departed: 05/08/2024 (Clawson)
Obituary Preview: Alice Joan Konno, loving and beloved mother of five, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on May 8, 2024 surrounded by her children, grandchildren, brother, other family members and several of her favorite dogs.
Born on January 29, 1933 in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Frank and Alice Giblin, Joan (as everyone called her) would move around the country as her father took on various jobs. After graduating from high school in Florida, she worked and helped support her family as a court stenographer in Rochester, NY, and as a secretary for the Haloid Corporation before it became Xerox. When her children were all in school she went back to work as a legal secretary.
She met the doctor she would marry while working as a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester after following the aroma of pipe smoke emanating from his lab and being invited for coffee. He had recently moved from Japan, and she helped him with his English. Joan and Edward Toshiaki Konno were wed in June of 1961. The couple first lived in Edmonton, Canada, then moved to Dearborn, MI, and finally settled in Bloomfield Hills, where the kids grew up in a yellow house with a big side yard for playing, in front of a woods perfect for exploring. They shared their home with a series of cats, some parakeets and a rambunctious beagle mix named Maypo. Throughout the years, Joan enjoyed playing canasta with her younger brother Frank, listening to Pete Fountain, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, reading, playing bridge, sewing/knitting, going to the movies, traveling to Japan and elsewhere, eating pizza and cuddling the many pets she lived with. But her main joy in life was raising her children. She was a tireless mother, cooking and caring for them, often on her own when Ed worked late. She gave her kids all she had, rarely if ever thinking of herself. Many of those who knew her would say she was one of the kindest people they’d ever met, and that she never had a bad word to say about anyone. Upon her passing, her brother Frank said, “She never had an enemy in the world.” Joan spent her later years living comfortably at home with her daughter Karen and son-in-law Rob, their goldendoodles Dexter and Charlie and labradoodle Teddy in Rochester Hills and later, Orion. At the moment of her passing, her room was coincidently filled with the sound of Pete Fountain’s “I’m Going Home.”
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Ed and her older brother John. She is survived by her children Kathy (Mike) Ables, Kris (Fred), Kevin (Leigh Ann), Karen (Rob) Walkowiak and John (Miho), brother Frank (Jane), grandchildren Samantha (Andrew), Andrew, Zach, Colton, Kristen, Dylan, Ryan, Hugo and Katy, nieces and nephews Michael (Lori), Ruth, Frank (Janie), Ann (Danny), Susie, Patti (Carl), John (Karen), Steve (Cris), Liz (George) and Katy, her beloved caregiver Gloria Walkowiak and her only great-grandchild George, who arrived in time for Joan to see his handsome face.
Friends are invited to remember Joan at her Funeral Mass on Tuesday, May 14 at 10:00 AM at the St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48034, with interment at a later date. Visitation starts at the Chapel at 9:30 AM. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the COPD Foundation or the St. Hugo of the Hills Church Endowment.

Nicholas Calin - August 28, 1999 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Clawson)
Obituary Preview: Nicholas Calin died suddenly and unexpectedly in Romania on May 2, 2024. He was 24 years old. Nicholas was born to Nicolae and Sylvia Calin on August 28, 1999.
He grew up in Michigan, forming a close lifelong bond to his sister, Alexandra Calin. Eventually he made the big decision to move to his parents homeland, Romania, for his studies. There he joined his beloved cousins, George Risca and Stefan Risca, at university. Nicholas had a strong passion for fitness and health. He pushed himself to be active, holding himself to a high standard. He enjoyed lifting in the gym, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He wanted to envelop himself in his passion for fitness, changing his major to kinetotherapy. There, he planned to fulfill himself by learning how to help children with physical disabilities overcome their challenges.
Additionally, Nicholas obtained his certification in personal training, as helping others onto their path of fitness and bettering oneself brought him joy. He was beginning to flourish, setting himself on a beautiful path pursuing his true passions. While at university, he met his true love, Olga. Their love was pure, innocent and a partnership truly divine. She was more than his soulmate, in his eyes she was a gift from God Himself. She brought him a happiness that was contagious, seeing their love brought warmth to your heart.
Being around Nicholas, your inner child is able to come out. He makes you happy, makes you laugh, and his presence always was a comfort. Nicholas was always happy to help those around him, it was second nature to him. He liked to keep busy, and was creative with new projects, his hobbies, and looking ahead to the future. Nicholas was also very hard on himself, the extreme kindness he shared onto others he did not give to himself. He was full of life and goals for the future, and we looked forward to basking in the joy of what he may bring.
Our hearts are shattered that Nicholas’s journey in life has ended so short. We hope Nicholas knows how much he was loved. Life is fragile. We will never understand why such a young, handsome healthy man was taken away. Nicholas, you completed our lives and we will miss forever. We will miss your heart of gold, your kind soul, and everyday we will mourn your future that you were robbed of.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks, Sunday, May 12th, 5-8pm. Saracusta 7pm. The Funeral Service will be Monday 9:30am at Descent of the Holy Ghost Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren. Burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Grass Lake.

Robert S. Kenning - September 20, 1923 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Clawson)
Obituary Preview: Robert Stanley Kenning of Birmingham, Michigan died on April 16, 2024. He was 100 years old. Bob was born on September 20, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN to parents, Theodore and Nettie Kenning.
After attending the University of Minnesota for 2 years, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. After discharge, he returned and graduated from University of Minnesota with a dual major of Civil Engineering and Business. While attending University of Minnesota he worked as a "Soda Jerk" where he developed his lifelong love of ice cream. He worked for Bass Engineering initially, then began his career at the City of Birmingham as Assistant DPW Superintendent. He advanced to City Manager where he served for many years and was honored with the dedication of Kenning Park at retirement. After retiring from the City of Birmingham, Bob worked for many years as the Director of the nonprofit Oakland Housing, where he built two subdivisions in Pontiac. These homes enabled families to establish home ownership in a thriving neighborhood.
Bob Kenning was a hard-working honest man with a deep belief in the Lord, and was one good looking fisherman. He loved his wife Shirley in a way that everyone deserves to be loved and built a life with her that taught the rest of us what unconditional meant. What was astonishing was his ability to craft anything out of wood - which he would promptly give away to bring joy to others. A couple of weeks in Minnesota at the family cabin each summer included the biggest fish contest which always resulted in embellished stories.
For his grandchildren he was a moral compass. He was also a vacation planner, chauffeur, tour guide and entertainment wrapped up as one perfect grandpa. He was a teacher, therapist and supporter and held the belief that anything could be fixed. He gave the VERY BEST hugs. He thought about his words before he spoke them and did not believe in saying "I told you so".
He instilled family traditions and taught us to always say “yes“ whenever offered donuts, root beer, or ice cream.
He will be remembered in love, forever.
Bob is survived by his loving children, Jim (Kitty) Kenning, Steve (Patricia) Kenning, and Tom (Melanie McCoy) Kenning and his cherished grandchildren, Kristin (Brian Viliunas) Kenning, Sarah (Ry) Charters, Robert Kenning, Katherine (Jeremiah Baker) Kenning, Kristine (James Dye) Kenning, Douglas Kenning, and Mary (Jay Swinson) Kenning. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Robert, Henry, Willow, Penny, Robin, Luca, and Mason. Bob is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley and his siblings, Carlton and Pearl.

She met John Richard Seymour (“Dick”) while skiing with friends at Boyne Mountain. They were married in 1954 and settled down in Grosse Pointe, where they raised two daughters.

Michael K. Jennings - November 27, 1943 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Clawson)
Obituary Preview: Michael Kingston Jennings died on April 7, 2024, at the age of 80. He was born November 27, 1943 and was son of Gordon Ferris Jennings and Frances Jayne Fisher. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived on Henrietta Street in Birmingham until the age of 12. Michael moved, along with his younger brothers, James and Gary to California in 1955, at the age of 12, where he resided in Torrance, a coastal city in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, Michael remained in California and attended High School there. He made friends easily, including the “Unholy Five”, who are still inseparable. Michael moved back to Michigan, when he graduated in 1962 and remained until his passing.
Michael worked hard over the years practicing insurance and financial planning. All of those years were spent with Equitable, while both as a manager and an owner of his financial advisory business, Jennings Financial Group. Regardless of where his feet were planted, one thing was true, he enjoyed his time away from work. Michael loved cars and when say love!! It did not matter what kind, make or model and the more exotic, the better. I was reminded of one of his MOST exotic cars, that being an original Porsche Spyder, that he ultimately traded for another and another. That does not go without saying, he also had a love of motorcycles. I used to joke that as the children got older, he was replacing us with his toys. (Not far from the truth). His brothers reminded me that this love started at a young age and they recalled him, having a Triumph motorcycle and working on it and ultimately selling it for something better, and that is where it all began. The only other thing that compared to cars and motorcycles, (excluding kids and grandkids) was his love of Michigan football (despite his daughter’s pressure to change because she went to Michigan State ). For those of you who do not know, his father, Ferris Jennings was a quarterback for University of Michigan in 1934-1936. Michael enjoyed watching Michigan football and Michigan State Football, as long as it did not coincide with Michigan Football.
Michael was proud of his children. He got a kick out of telling people his eldest daughter, Nichole is a judge. Moreover, he was very proud of his son and what his son has accomplished. When Michael was beginning to decline, his son, Michael had taken over his father’s accounts and after finding his right place is flourishing. While Michael never got to see Jessica and Jessica’s fiancé, Eric’s beautiful boutique, Bishop Hotel, in Port Townsend, Washington, that did not stop him from talking about how amazed he was. He was so proud of his youngest daughter and her accomplishments, it left him beaming.
Probably the biggest apple of Michael’s eye, would have to be his grandchildren; Gabriella, Sophia, Maxwell and Quinn. He loved seeing, playing, watching and hearing about the grandchildren. Michael would attend soccer games in the sleet, and rain to watch the kids play. Michael spent many summers babysitting his two granddaughters. He took them to the Heathers Club pool and to golf lessons, another favorite of his. Michael enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with his son and grandsons in 2022 and enjoyed the time he spent with them immensely. The grandchildren all called him “papa” and he will forever be in their hearts.
Michael was previously married in 1966 to Carol Ford. He was remarried in 1979 to Lois Anna Verneau (Dykstra), which was witnessed by his eldest daughter, Nichole, who was a flower girl. That marriage resulted in the birth of Michael and Jessica. Michael later adopted Nichole and ironically, it is amazing how often Nichole and Michael are told they look exactly alike. Michael was also previously married to Nancy Krueger in 2004.
Michael is survived by his children, Nichole Marie Soma and (fiancé) James Matthew Aldridge, Michael Fisher Jennings, Jessica Ann Jennings and (fiancé) Eric Michael Wennberg. He is survived by four grandchildren, Gabriella Grace Soma, Sophia Nicole Soma, Maxwell Edward Jennings and Quinn Michael Jennings. He is survived by his siblings James F. Jennings and Gary W. Jennings, as well as his half sister, Marilynn Mons, and their families.
Memorial gathering will be Monday, April 15, from 4-8pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 1368 N. Crooks Rd., Clawson, Michigan 48017. A Reception in Michael's memory will be on Tuesday, April 16, at 12pm at Bacco Ristorante, 29410 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield, Michigan 48034. Memorial donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
