James Harold Kotz, Jr. - December 23, 1939 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Wardensville)
Obituary Preview: James Harold Kotz, Jr. of Wardensville, West Virginia – or Harold as he liked to be called-- passed away on Friday, April 19. He was the son of the late James Harold Kotz, Sr. and Mary Virginia Hendrickson Kotz. Born December 23, 1939, Harold lived his early life in Wardensville where he graduated from Wardensville High School in 1958. He attended Potomac State College in Keyser, West Virginia; and in 1960, he began a 30-year career with the West Virginia Department of Highways where he served as a project supervisor of numerous bridge and road projects in the Potomac Highlands and Eastern Panhandle.
Upon retirement from the Department of Highways, Harold then worked as a superintendent and estimator for a Jefferson County asphalt contractor; and for a short period of time, he worked at the USDA as a map maker. He and his family owned and operated a Christmas tree farm in Jefferson County, and he was employed with the local horse racing industry at nights and on weekends and holidays from 1964 to 1980. While living in Jefferson County, Harold and his family began restoration of the Kotz family farm and home in Wardensville. The restoration was completed in 1995, and the farm was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
Harold married Carrollyn Orndorff Kotz, his childhood sweetheart, in 1963, and soon after, they resided in Charles Town, West Virginia for 35 years. Over his lifetime, Harold enjoyed being a member of many social, service, and professional organizations including the Lions Club, Jefferson County Izaak Walton League, West Virginia Union of Mutuel Clerks, Local 533, North American Trap Collectors Association, and Lost River Craft Cooperative. He was a charter member of the Conservation Deer Club of Wardensville and a proud member of the West Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a lifelong member of the Wardensville Presbyterian Church, and he often tried to help those in need, particularly the elderly and the infirmed of the community.
As a youngster, Harold became an accomplished outdoorsman as he learned by literally following in his father's footsteps step-by-step. Upon his father’s death when Harold was only 11, he was mentored in the ways of hunting, trapping, and fishing by many in the community, especially Dr. James Mathias, Bill Orndorff, Clifton Jenkins, and Charles Rudy.
In later years, listening to music became a favorite passion; the kind mattered not, but country and gospel ranked high on the list. He loved collecting antiques, attending auctions, and restoring old chairs, especially items from Wardensville and the surrounding areas.
In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Leigh Sherman, and a nephew, Joe Sherman, both of Moorefield. Harold is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Carrollyn; one son, Brian; a daughter-in-law, Megan; his dear grandson, Noah; a niece, Beth Golden, and many cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Emery was a veteran in the United States Navy serving from March of 1973- February of 1981. After his time in the Navy, he worked as a steel worker in Columbia, SC before returning to work as a Communications Officer, this time for the CIA working from 1983-2005. He finally retired for good in 2014 after finishing up his career as a Government Contractor. During his career he received numerous awards and certificates including an award for "Exceptional Performance" signed by the director of the CIA. His career in communications spanned over 39 years. He began using teletype equipment in the 70’s, using 100WPM printers. By the time of his retirement, he was using high speed computers, but it was still communications.

During his 22 years working for the federal government, his late wife Beth and son Richard served overseas at 3 different locations in 10 years. They were able to travel and see sights that most Americans would spend thousands of dollars to be able to visit for only a short period. In each of those assignments they had only spent at least 3 years. Emery had visited places that he would only have dreamed out as a child. In one of those instances, he spent Thanksgiving in Cairo, Egypt walking to burial chambers in one of the Pyramids.
In his retirement years Emery spent a lot of time with his family. Every month he would provide his family with a home cooked meal to enjoy. He was a history buff and enjoyed reading, politics, watching football, going target shooting and playing jokes on his granddaughters.

Timothy P. "Tim" Snyder - July 03, 2005 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Wardensville)
Obituary Preview: Timothy Phillip “Tim” Snyder, 18, of Baker, WV, died on Friday, March 15, 2024.
Tim was born on July 3, 2005, in Winchester, VA, the son of Robert Snyder of High View, WV and Jennifer Seabright (Joseph Morkunas) of Baker, WV. Tim never let his hands idle for long, always working on a new project – and if he couldn’t find one of his own, he’d go looking for others who needed help with theirs. He was a tried-and-true country boy, who loved working on his truck, getting his hands dirty, and spending time outside. When Tim wasn’t at work or school, he could be found nearby, helping with farm chores with mostly minimal complaints or fighting with the tailgate of his beloved truck.
He was a fan of nature and the outdoors, and took joy in the simple things, like sharing a Coke with his sister or making his family laugh. Tim was a talented artist, his art often reflecting the objects closest to his heart: his faith, his country, and his family.
Tim was lucky enough to have two families – in addition to his blood relatives, he had found a loving community at his work at the Wardensville Garden Market. Tim loved the work he did for the market and spending time with his coworkers, who he learned so much from during his time there. Every day he came home with a new story, memory, or skill that he couldn’t wait to share.
Surviving along his parents is his maternal grandmother: Debra Miller Seabright of Baker, WV; maternal grandfather: Doug N. Seabright (Nora) of Stephens City, VA: two sisters: Allison Seabright of Wardensville, WV; Sydney Snyder of Cumberland, MD; two aunts: Sandra Miller (James) of High View, WV; Janet Stewart of Moorefield, WV; special cousins: Ashleigh Stewart & Joe Stewart - both of Moorefield, WV.
A time to gather and share memories of Tim would be held on Saturday March 23, 2024 from 6-8 PM at the Wardensville Garden Market, 28813 WV-55, Wardensville, WV 26851.
If you have pictures of Tim or there’s a song that reminds you of him, please send photos and music selections to the family: seabriam@dukes.JMU.edu.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Tim to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention 199 Water St., 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038.
