Obituary Preview: Mrs. Allie Bradley Humphreys, age 89, of Covington, died Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at TerraBella Senior Living Facility in Roanoke. She was married to the late William Milton Humphreys for 38 years.
Mrs. Humphreys was born August 12, 1934 in Alleghany County, the youngest of 10 children born to the late John Marshall Bradley and Allie Palmer Bradley.
A graduate of Dunlap High School, she lived most of her life in the Covington area. During her working career, she had been a hairdresser and for many years was owner and operator of Creative Beauty Salon in Covington.
Mr. and Mrs. Humphreys were members of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Her caring and compassionate nature endeared her to family and friends alike. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading and spending time with family.
Mrs. Humphreys is survived by three sons, Robert Edward McFadden, of Covington, William Milton “Tony” Humphreys Jr., of Newport News, Terry Alan Humphreys (Lorrie) of Covington; a sister, Regina Via of Woodstock; four grandchildren, Benton McCormick (Allison) of Covington, Danielle Walker (Josh) of Enterprise, AL, Samantha McCormick of Covington, Amber Seith (Mark) of Roanoke; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Humphreys was preceded in death by five brothers, Ivan Hobert Bradley, Rufus Guy Bradley, John Marshall “Buck” Bradley, Edward “Ebie” Bradley, Charles Alvin “Chuck” Bradley; three sisters, Virginia Bradley “Ginny” Harter, Imogene Bradley “Imy” Barger, Icaphine Bessie “Icy” Bradley; a sister-in-law, Lillian Jane "T-Heart" Humphreys; and a brother-in-law, Donald “Brother” Humphreys.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 at Loving Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. James MacDougall officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert McFadden, Terry Humphreys, William "Tony" Humphreys, Jr., Mark Seith, Benton McCormick and Brennan Snook.

Lonnie Dan Rider - November 23, 1927 - May 11, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mr. Lonnie Dan Rider, age 96, of Covington, died Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge. He was the husband of the late Ruth Pierce Rider.
Mr. Rider was born November 23, 1927 in Neola, WV, the son of the late Oscar Rider and Almedia Dilley Rider. He served his country as a member of the United State Army where he was stationed in Panama during the Korean conflict. Mr. Rider was employed in sales and delivery by the Coca Cola Company and later was employed as a custodian at the Falling Spring School from 1989 until 1995. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and was known for keeping busy and wanting to make sure everyone else was okay before himself. Mr. Rider was an active member of First Presbyterian Church Most of all, Lonnie loved spending time with his family.
Mr. Rider is survived by his granddaughter, Tracy Rider; three great grandchildren, Elizabeth Love, Vernon Love, Jr. and Helen Schrenk ; his siblings, Bertie Smith, Marie Karnes and Shelby Spahn; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Rider was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Rider; a daughter, Linda Stearrett Richmond; and his siblings, Winters Rider, Clemmit Armentrout, Lucy Rider, Nan Callan, Lake Rider, Aubrey Rider, Walter Rider and Sylvia Rider.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Susan Ennis officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home and at other times at the residence, 309 Lacks Avenue, Covington.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Shelvagene "Jean" Lowery King, age 83. of Eagle Rock, died Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Clifton Forge. She was the wife of the late Linwood Earl King who preceded her in death in 2023.
Mrs. King was born January 19, 1941 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Frank James Lowery and Hazel Richmond Lowery. A homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family, she would occasionally take jobs at various restaurants including D&J Family Restaurant, Hardees, Western Sizzlin and Quickette as well as in the cafeteria at James River High School. Mrs. King was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church. In her spare time, Jean enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and eating out with family and friends especially at the Double C Restaurant in Covington.
Mrs. King is survived by a son, Linwood F. King and wife, Brandi of Salem; two daughters, Pamela K. Stinnett and husband, Greg of Buchanan and Marcella K. Campbell and husband, Andy of Raphine; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and a brother, Gary Hankins and wife, Denise of Cookeville, TN.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. King was preceded in death by her sister, Carol Lowery Schumaker.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 6, 2024, at Galatia Presbyterian Church with Rev. Cole Floyd officiating, assisted by Rev. Emily Hook and Rev. Robert McRae. Interment will follow in Galatia Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Linwood F. King, Greg Stinnett, Andy Campbell, Levi King, Austin Stinnett and Morgan Kelley.
The family will receive their friends on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at Galatia Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Griffin was born July 8, 1935 in Bath County, the son of the late Ira Hendrick Griffin and Ada Bennett Griffin. He was employed as a iron worker in the construction field during his working career. Mr. Griffin was a member of the Pentecostal faith. In his spare time, Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working with crafts involving wood and paints.
Mr. Griffin is survived by two daughters, Betsy Griffin of Covington and Mary Ann Webb and husband, Avery of Covington; four grandchildren, Robert Griffin, Amy Austin, Kimberly Nickle and Sara Griffin; and eight great grandchildren.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his children, Robert Griffin, Cynthia Griffin and Calvin H. Griffin and three sisters, Sally Falls, Mary Persinger and Katie Williams.

Ms. Barbara Lynne Rapple, age 70, of Covington, died suddenly, Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at her residence.
Ms. Rapple was born October 13, 1953 in Mercer County, PA, the daughter of the late Donnell James Rapple and Polly Manning. During her working career, she had been employed as a beautician as well as worked as a physical therapist assistant for a number of years before her retirement. Ms. Rapple loved maintaining her beautiful yard, gardening and planting gorgeous and colorful flower gardens. Barbara's favorite hobbies were visiting thrift shops and antiquing which she would use her "finds" to create beautiful displays that amazed visitors to her home.
Ms. Rapple is survived by a sister, Kelly Jernigan of Williamston, NC and her nieces and nephew, Amber Rose Bowen of Greenville, PA, Logan Shane Chess of Greenville, NC and Layla May Chess of Williamston, NC.

Mr. Lockhart was born July 31, 1959 in Roanoke, the son of C.P. Lockhart and the late Carol Bowen Lockhart. He was formerly employed as a network administrator by Westvaco. Jay was a member of the Covington Masonic Lodge #171 AF &AM where he served the lodge as Worshipful Master in 2021. He was also a member of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club as well as the Roanoke Shrine Club
In addition to his wife, Angela, and father, C.P., Mr. Lockhart is survived by a brother, Jeffrey Lynn Lockhart and wife, Terri, of Wilson, NC; a niece, Graesyn; two nephews, Gunnar and Gage; and a special friend, Mark Cox.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 19, 2024, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Price officiating.
Masonic rites will be conducted by Covington Masonic Lodge #171 AF&AM.

Mrs. Mary Jane Holcomb, age 82, of Covington, died Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Brian Center Nursing Care, Low Moor.
Mrs. Holcomb was born July 9, 1941 in Covington, the daughter of the late Lacy Newton Burns and Elizabeth Holcomb Burns. She was a lifetime resident of this community. Mrs. Holcomb was employed as a molder by the former Arcadia Polymers and also worked at Dollar General, Dollar Tree, cleaned houses for many people and sat with numerous people convalescing at home. Mary was a member of Cornerstone Church.
Mrs. Holcomb is survived by a son, Michael W. Holcomb of Covington; a niece, Sharon Kay Campbell of Covington; a nephew, Michael Allen Campbell and wife, Leilani of Charlotte, NC; and special friends, Rita Chittum Deguzman and husband, Robert, Bobbie Charles and Lucinda Hanna.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Holcomb is preceded in death by her sister, June Holcomb Campbell in 2011; her brother-in-law, William Carroll Campbell in 1991; and her nephew, Thomas Carroll Campbell in 1990.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Cornerstone Church with Rev. Curtis Stump officiating.

She was born on August 8, 1932 to William Craig Via and Nina Marie Via, in Sweet Chalybeate, Virginia at the Carter family home. Her twin brother died in childbirth.
Dorcas was raised in Covington, Virginia, and graduated college with a degree in elementary education from Fairfax Hall Junior College and Radford University.
She married Edgar Walton Roller in 1959 and he preceded her in death in 1994.
She is survived by her two children, Ann Segrave (Thomas) of Cheyenne, and William Roller (Kelly) of St. Louis, Missouri; and the proud grandparent of Stephen Roller, Lindsey Roller, James Segrave, Austin Segrave, Taylor Segrave and Kacie Roller.
Dorcas filled every room with laughter and conversation. She will be missed.

Mr. Nicely was born June 8, 1933 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Andrew Edward Nicely and Clara Gum Nicely. He served his country as a member of the United States Army as well as serving in National Guard of Virginia and in the reserves of the Army of the United States. Marvin was employed by the U.S. Corp of Engineers where he worked in the maintenance department. Mr. Nicely was a member of Greenwood Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed farming in his spare time.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn, Mr. Nicely is survived by a brother, F.A. "Dick" Nicely; special nieces and nephews, Suzanne Byer, Kinlee Ratliff, Addyson Burkholder, Timmy Nicely and wife, Libby, and Willie Nicely and wife, Diana.
In addition to his parents, Andrew and Clara Nicely, Mr. Nicely was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Arthur Nicely, Bill Nicely, Edna Hartless, Viola Marrett, Harper Nicely, Lee Nicely, Wilbur Nicely, Bertie Jones, Ruby Minnicks, Ben Nicely and Nettie Victors.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Matlack officiating. Interment will follow in Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. King was born December 13, 1940 in Botetourt, VA, the son of the late Norman Franklin King and Lenna Austin King. Norman was a graduate of Eagle Rock High School, Class of 1959. He was employed by Westvaco where he worked on Number 5 paper machine as well as Number 1 paper machine. Mr. King was a longtime and active member of First Christian Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, playing fast pitch softball and was an avid Virginia Tech fan.
In addition to his wife, Betty, Mr. King is survived by a son, Ricky L. Dameron and wife, Linda of Eagle Rock; two daughters, Vicky Sue Dameron of Eagle Rock and Serita A. Powell and husband, Brian of Covington; a granddaughter, Mandy Lee Montgomery; a great granddaughter, Malia Faith Hawthorne; two brothers, Bernard B . King of Eagle Rock and Coy H. King of Salem; a sister, Georgia Gale Knighton and husband, Larry of Eagle Rock; a sister-in-law, Julia Hale King of Low Moor; a number of nieces and nephews including Cindy Wright and husband, Jeff, Robin Thompson and husband, Richard, Timothy G. King and significant other, Lindsey, Christopher King and Steven King.
In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph King.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at First Christian Church with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

In addition to her husband, William, she is survived by two sons, David W. Kidd and wife, Alisha, Joshua T. Kidd and wife, Wendy, all of Covington; four grandsons, Anthony A. Kidd and wife, Sabrina of St. Albans, WV, Ryan D. Kidd and fiancé, Emily Phillips of Covington, Logan G. Kidd and partner, Daniel Vandeberg of Roanoke, Andrew D. Kidd and fiancé Hannah Jarrell of Covington; nine great -grandchildren, Journey Kidd, Annabella Holliday, Landon Kidd, Sophia Kidd, Aria Kidd, Clayton Kidd, Carter Kidd, Luca Kidd and Grayson Kidd; a sister, Marie (Rita)h Deguzman and one brother, John Chittum, both of Covington.
In addition her parents, Mrs. Kidd was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Lee and Barry Chittum and a sister, Jean Shinault.

During his working, Mr. Rothwell was employed as a carpenter and truly enjoyed working with his hands and building things. Bryan enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Rothwell is survived by four sons, David Gibson of Covington, Adam Gibson of Covington, Jason Rothwell of Danville and Zach Rothwell of Danville; a daughter, Misty York of Ashboro, NC; eleven grandchildren; a brother, Stephen B. Rothwell of Covington; a sister, Linda R. Arritt and husband, Chipper of Covington; an aunt, Nancy Dame; three nephews, Matt Rothwell, Eric Rothwell and Josh Arritt; and a niece, Emily Arritt.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Humphreys was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Humphreys and William Milton Humphreys.

In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family especially his children and grandchildren.

In his spare time, Jesse enjoyed camping, traveling, woodworking and spending time with his family.
Mr. Pullin is survived by a son, Michael "Mike" Pullin and wife, Donna; a daughter, Teresa "Teri" Sowards and husband, Steve; six grandchildren; seven great grandsons; three great granddaughters; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lipes was born October 14, 1941 in Virginia, the daughter of the late Elzie Dayton and Frances Glover . She was a choir director at Central United Methodist Church in Clifton Forge and was also employed by Dominion Bank for a number of years. While living in the Roanoke area, she loved to cook and prepare meals for the Good Samaritan Hospice.
A truly wonderful and inspired cook and caterer, Louise owned and operated the former Hostess Catering Business here in Covington. She was well- known throughout this community and everyone had the good fortune to eat her delicious cooking. Louise was known for her incredible baking, especially her delicious carrot and coconut cakes, plus making sure that everyone left with a piece of cake or a treat. Louise had a strong desire to serve her community by preparing meals for the local hospice families as well as being a member of both the Botetourt and Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Clubs.
Mrs. Lipes loved music, especially opera, and truly enjoyed listening to her favorite classical artist, Andrea Bocelli. She was a longtime member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir as well as cooking for church functions. Mrs. Lipes was an avid University of Virginia fan who enjoyed watching the Cavaliers play. Most of all, Louise loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, Dylan, Katelyn, Rachel and Hannah whom were the light of her life and she cherished the time that she spent with them. Louise also cherished the time spent and memories made at the Glover Family reunions.
Mrs. Lipes is survived by two sons, Marvin Kirk Lipes and wife, Tina of Roanoke and Michael Leslie Lipes and girlfriend, Danielle Reynolds of Covington; her grandchildren, Dylan Carson, Katelyn Lipes Winand and husband, Dustin, Rachel Carson and fiancé, Daniel Blevins, Hannah Lipes; a son-in-law, Russell Carson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lipes was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Anne Lipes Carson and her siblings, Tom Glover, Ron Glover, Don Glover and David Ray Glover.

She was known for her good pies - pecan, pumpkin and coconut as well as her zucchini bread. Irene also made many pieces of lovely crochet work. She truly loved spending time with her family and friends especially attending family gatherings.
Mrs. Aynes is survived by two sisters, Juanita S. Musser of Covington and Shirley S. Burdette and husband, Richard of White Sulphur Springs, WV; three brothers, Basil L. Sampson, Darrell Sampson and Gene Sampson, all of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Aynes was preceded in death by three sisters, Phyllis S. Lawrence-Booth, Ruby S. Leffel and Violet S. Hayward and a brother, Wayne Sampson.
