Wayne Richard Simonis - December 01, 1936 - May 08, 2024

Departed: 05/08/2024 (La Grande)
Obituary Preview: Wayne Richard Simonis was born Dec.1, 1936, in La Grande, Oregon, to Perry and Mae Simonis. He was called home on May 8, 2024. He loved his Heavenly Father, his family and his country. He was forever grateful to his parents, looked up to brothers Ernest, George and Henry, and felt deeply protective of brothers Joe and Jimmy.
Wayne fell in love at first sight with his high school sweetheart, Ernestine. They married on April 7, 1954, in Walla Walla, Washington, and were together from that day on. He took great joy in the growth and accomplishments of his family. He and Ernie had four beloved children: Raymond, a longtime railroad engineer; Cheri, a loving homemaker; Stephen, a skilled tradesman; and Tina, a loving homemaker and dedicated educator. “Papa” and “Nana” had 11 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-greatgrandchildren, and countless grandchildren of the heart.
Wayne’s most cherished memories involved gathering with his entire family for “Nana’s Christmas” where Santa Simonis and his helpers always had gifts for family and visitors alike.
Wayne’s personal testimony of the gospel was extremely important to him. He and Ernie rededicated themselves to each other and to their Heavenly Father when they were sealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple in Salt Lake City on May 7, 1965. He served on the High Council and in the Bishopric. He was dedicated to sharing his faith with others and helping young people fulfill their potential: He taught seminary to high schoolers, supported the Missionary Fund, was a Boy Scout leader, opened his home to youths in need, and answered many other callings of the church.
Wayne enlisted in the Oregon Army National Guard as a Private E-1 in Co E 1-186th Infantry in February 1954. He received his appointment to Chief Warrant Officer in January 1971. He graduated with honors from Eastern Oregon State College, earning a bachelor of science degree in June 1974. He completed the Warrant Officer Senior Course in December 1982 and the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course in September 1996.
Wayne was recognized on numerous occasions for his outstanding and superior, sustained performance as an officer and federal technician. CW5 Simonis retired in December 1996 after 42 years of loyal and dedicated service. His country often took him away from his precious family and beloved hometown: His heart anchored him to both.
Wayne retired early to dedicate a full measure of life to his devoted Ernie. They traveled the world by cruise ship with their friends Ed and Mary Lou Reddish, and they traveled North America in their RV with their friends Andy and Willie DeKorte. They were fond of taking the RV to Arizona with Dean and Judy Stone to watch Joe Talbott compete in rodeo events.
Wayne was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed skiing (especially when he could teach his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren), fishing (especially for salmon in Alaska), hunting (especially for moose in Alaska) and overnight rafting trips on the Grande Ronde River. He reveled in sharing his love of the outdoors with his family, especially at his properties in McCall and on Mt. Emily. Among the many loved ones who welcomed him home are his parents; his brothers, Ernest, George, Henry and Jim; his granddaughter, Samantha; and his great-granddaughter, baby Hazel.
Services will be held May 24 at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1802 Gekeler Lane, La Grande, Oregon. Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande, is overseeing the Services.

Don Townsend - January 01, 1935 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (La Grande)
Obituary Preview: Don Townsend
Don A. Townsend, age 89, of Elgin, passed away on April 21th 2024 at Grande Ronde Hospital.
On January 1, 1935, Bill and Ina Townsend were celebrating the New Year when Ina said she felt ill. Ina and Bill left the celebration, and as Ina told the story, "So, I went home and had Don". Thus began the life of Donald Arthur Townsend.
Born in Elgin, Oregon, Don grew up with brothers and sisters living a life of outdoor and farm adventures. The family farmed with horses before modernizing to a tractor. At a young age, he was stepped on by a work horse and had a unique scar of a hoof print on his leg the rest of his life. Graduating from Elgin High School, his team played basketball for the state championship his senior year. As an adult, he raised cattle, hogs, and hay, and worked as a millwright for Boise Cascade for 30 years. His parents raised sheep, but Don was adamant that there would never be sheep on his ranch. After Don and his wife, Mary Lynn, married, Don found himself partnered with her in raising Quarter Horses for race, pleasure, and show.
Don's passions were farming, fishing, hunting, traveling, gambling, and attending his children's sporting events, not necessarily in that order. He made several successful moose hunting trips to British Columbia, and hunted elk and deer in the Elgin area. Don and Mary Lynn fished in Eastern Oregon and during trips to Canada, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Alaska. When he was no longer able to hunt, Don enjoyed watching the wildlife on the ranch. Always ready for a poker game, Don played locally with friends and on the many trips he and Mary Lynn made to Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Pendleton.
Don lived most of his life in Elgin with the exception of a short time in Heppner, Oregon, where he joined the Elks Club, maintaining his membership for 59 years. He honorably served his country as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army. After training in Colorado, he was stationed in South Korea for the majority of his enlistment. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Don passed suddenly at Grande Ronde Hospital on April 21, 2024. He is survived by his wife, children, brother, Ron (Rhonda), brother-in-law, Buddy Carpenter, sister-in-law, Bonnie Townsend, and several extended Townsend family members.
No funeral services are planned. In keeping with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered on the ranch he loved.
For those considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests the Elgin Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P. 0. Box 551, Elgin, Or 97827 or the American Legion, P. 0. Box 1652, La Grande, OR 97850.
A special thank you to Don's Elgin High School classmates, whose lifelong friendships he cherished.

Casey James Budlong - December 28, 1977 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (La Grande)
Obituary Preview: Casey James Budlong December 28, 1977 – April 20, 2024 Mill City, OR
It is with great sorrow that we share the news that Casey lost his fight with brain cancer on April 20, 2024. He was surrounded by friends and family up until the end, and the amount of love and support he received helped him in his fight.
Casey was born to Dennis and Cari (Brown) Budlong on December 28, 1977. A Christmastime baby, he was born to love the snow and cold. Raised in Mill City, OR, he found his first true love: the family farm. His family had homesteaded and lived in this place for generations, and anyone who knew Casey knew how special the place was to him.
But, even though he loved Mill City, the farm, and the amazing community he came from, he left after graduating from Santiam High School and attended Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, OR, where he received a bachelor's degree.
Casey began logging and working on the trail crew for the USFS while in Mill City, and once he moved to La Grande, he began a decades-long career as a wildland firefighter, many years of which he was a Hot Shot, a career that eventually took his life. Casey was a dedicated employee and did the job with strength, knowledge, leadership, humor, and camaraderie. And anyone who has worked with Casey for years or a day will attest to that.
La Grande also brought another life change for Casey, and in 2009, he met his wife, Kathleen (Katy) Van Horn. They fell in love quickly, often fighting for who would get to talk first, and were married in 2011. They were blessed with their son, Christofer Budlong, in 2015. Casey had always wanted a son and was so proud of Chris. His biggest regret was not being able to teach him all the things in life that a father should teach their son.
Casey loved many things in life: hunting, fishing, hiking, a big meal (like a really big meal), maple syrup, and snow to name a few. But he loved nothing more than his family, his friends, and the farm. He was a true gentle giant. Casey was loyal and kind and thought of others before himself (unless it involved food). He showed this right up until the end, always more concerned with how his family was holding up than himself. He had a sense of humor that made everyone love him and that gave others around him strength. And that is how he fought this terrible battle. With humor, with love, and with a strength that will live on in those he left behind.
Casey was, by all definitions, a true hero. In his job, in his life, and in his death. And he is leaving behind a legacy that will never die, not only in his son but in the stories that will be told about him for generations to come. There are no words to describe how much Casey will be missed. But he will live on in all our hearts, as legends do.
We are eternally grateful for knowing him, and our lives are all better for the short time we had him here. Goodbye, Big Guy.
Casey is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Katy) Budlong; his son, Christofer Budlong; his Mother, Cari Budlong; his Dad and Step-Mom, Dennis and Cindi Budlong; his maternal grandmother, Lynne Edwards; his brother and sister-in-law, Bryce and Kayla Budlong (Natalie & Elsa); his brother and sister-in-law, Zev and Amanda Gabai (Gilad & Nadav); and his sister, Hadas Gabai: his aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other relatives who loved him dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Gates Community Church on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2:00 pm.
Contributions can be made in his honor to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Betty Jean Baker - October 01, 1948 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (La Grande)
Obituary Preview: Betty (Glass) Baker, born to Alfred Glass and Rose (Pfister) Glass in Lewiston, Idaho on October 1, 1948, embarked on her journey to eternity on April 10, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She was 75 years old.
Betty's story began in the heart of Idaho, where she attended Lewiston High School. With a thirst for adventure, she pursued her education further at Kinman Business University in Spokane, which was a time that she held dear for the friendships and memories she made there. Betty loved to share stories of her high school and college days and both Lewiston and Spokane remained very special places for her.
Betty moved to Oregon in 1973, where her life took a turn towards destiny. There, she met the love of her life, Daniel Baker. Their connection was instantaneous, and within six months of meeting they exchanged vows on August 18, 1973 and settled down in Summerville. Their union was blessed with four beautiful daughters, each a testament to the enduring love shared between Betty and Danny.
In 1996, Betty and Danny began a new adventure together, purchasing the Sub Shop in La Grande, a beloved establishment in their community. For years, they poured their hearts and souls into the business, serving their patrons with warmth and dedication. As the owner of the Sub Shop, Betty didn't just serve sandwiches; she cultivated relationships. Betty found joy in the connections she made with her customers and employees, each interaction a chance to brighten someone's day with her warm smile and genuine kindness. Danny would always joke that anyone who walked through the door was Betty’s friend, and she was often heard saying “my sandwiches are made with love”. Beyond the Sub Shop counter, Betty's circle of friends extended far and wide. She enjoyed her Bunco parties with her ”Bunco Babes”, where laughter and camaraderie filled the room Betty also held her Facebook friends close to her heart, finding comfort and joy in the virtual connections she nurtured.
One of Betty's greatest joys was spending quality time with her sister, Arlene. Together they set off on countless camping adventures, their side-by-side motorhome campsites serving as the backdrop for laughter and their shared love of nature. Betty found immense joy visiting the Oregon coast where she made annual journeys and never missed a chance for “a trip to the coast”. Betty found excitement and freedom in the open road. Whether it was a spontaneous trip to the mountains, a weekend getaway to a nearby town, or a cross-country journey to uncharted territories, Betty was always up for an adventure, eager to discover new sights, experiences, and restaurants where she would take endless pictures of all the small, beautiful details along the way. Betty found solace in painting, delighted in puttering around her yard, and cherished the surprise flowers she received from her special friend, Bob Loveless.
Above all, Betty's greatest joy came from spending time with and offering unwavering support to her children and grandchildren. They were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment she spent with them. Betty's home in Summerville was not just a house; it was a sanctuary of love and hospitality, where family and friends were always welcomed with open arms and open hearts. Betty created a haven where laughter echoed, and memories were woven into the very fabric of the walls. Every holiday, birthday, and special occasion was an opportunity for Betty to open her doors and extend her hospitality to all who crossed the threshold of the home she loved and lived in for 51 years.
Whether it was a festive Thanksgiving feast, a cozy Christmas celebration which she poured herself into, or a lively birthday bash, Betty's home was always filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of cherished company.
Betty's legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Betty was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a pillar of strength and support for her family and friends. Her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love touched the lives of all who knew her. Whether through her gentle words of wisdom or her warm embrace, Betty left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Friday, April 19th, at 2:00 p.m. at Aspen Meadows in Summerville. Following the service, a graveside service will be held at Summerville Cemetery. We invite all who knew and loved Betty to join us in honoring her memory and sharing stories of her remarkable life. Loveland Funeral Chapel of La Grande, Oregon will be handling arrangements.
Betty is survived by her four daughters and their loving husbands: Danette and Andreas Studer of Waitsburg, Wendi and Joe Fisher of Summerville, Angie and Bucky Haney of Paisley, and Kristi and Austin McDonald of Imbler, her treasured grandchildren: Tanner, Carter, Avonlea, and Natalie Crook; Millie and Jack Fisher; Logan Baker; and Tyler and Trevor Haney. Betty leaves behind her devoted sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and David Baker, her brother-in-law Ronnie Baker, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Christine and Mike Brinkman, sister-in-law Sandy Hill and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, along with a vast network of friends, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Dan, her parents, her brothers Gerald Glass, Frank and Bobby Kleist, her sister Arletta Banks and sister-in-law, Carol Baker.
Though Betty may have departed from this world unexpectedly, her love will continue to guide us, lighting the way through our grief and reminding us to cherish each moment we have with those we hold dear. Rest in peace, dear Betty, knowing that you are deeply loved and will be forever missed.

Robert Wayne Martin - July 25, 1948 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (La Grande)
Obituary Preview: Robert Wayne Martin “Bob”, 75, of Lostine, was born to Gerald Robert Martin and Ellen Rose Martin on July 25, 1948 in Abilene, Texas, and went home to be with Jesus on April 7, 2024.
Although the Lord granted Bob a life with rich experiences, too numerous to mention, and with great relationships too deep to recount, Bob did not want to be remembered for what he did, who he knew or what he accomplished but rather for who he knew Jesus to be and for what Christ had accomplished on his behalf.
At an early age, Bob professed his faith in Jesus Christ. He was raised in a Christian home, where he witnessed amazing faith in action. It was this foundation of faith, coupled with God’s sovereignty and providence, that touched every aspect of his life in astounding ways. Though his walk with God was never perfect, he trusted in the perfection of Jesus Christ, his Rock and Redeemer. After decades of the Lord’s patience and faithfulness and after the Lord gave Bob his ‘gift’ of cancer, Bob became a beacon of joy, peace, and hope to all who knew him. The more pain and devastation the cancer brought, the more Bob gave glory to God and shared with others the hope that was within him. He encouraged everyone in the hope of Christ Jesus and often referred folks to Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” We are comforted knowing that the Lord, having loved Bob, loved him to the end (John 13:1), and we are rejoicing that he is in the presence of his Savior, the lover of his soul, worshiping with the saints that have gone before him, finally at rest and gloriously free!
Bob leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Melissa Martin, his children Steve (Elli) Martin, Michelle Martin, Rob Martin, and Michael (Alicen) Martin; his grandchildren, Lindsey and Shaye; siblings, Kathleen Martin, Barbara McLean, Virginia (Caleb) Clement, Janell (Gary) Gregory, Melissa (Greg) Stiles, and Ross (Wendy) Martin, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Gerald and Ellen Martin and his niece, Lora Jane Stiles.
Celebration of life will be held at Summit Church in Enterprise, OR on April 27, 2024 at Noon followed by a time of fellowship and light lunch at Cloverleaf Hall.
The family welcomes donations to Summit Church in lieu of flowers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services or donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check with the specific publication or platform for their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may require you to submit through a funeral home or online portal, while others may accept direct submissions from family members.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Just be sure to store it in a safe place where it can be easily found after your passing.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Should I include humor in an obituary?

If the deceased had a great sense of humor, it's perfectly fine to inject some levity into the obituary. Just be sure to keep it tasteful and respectful.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's values or spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or death that you'd rather not share publicly, it's okay to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that the goal is to honor the person's memory, not to sensationalize their passing.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Be sure to specify the organization and any relevant details.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the text multiple times for spelling, grammar, and factual errors. It's also a good idea to have someone else review it before submission.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check their policies before submitting.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a significant anniversary or special occasion, check with the original publication or platform for their reprint policies.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

DON'T hesitate to ask! Funeral homes often provide guidance or writing services. You can also hire a professional obituary writer or seek help from a friend or family member with strong writing skills.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Taking on this task during bereavement can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting support from loved ones or seeking guidance from a funeral director or counselor. Remember that it's okay to take your time and prioritize self-care during this challenging period.

Can I include social media handles in an obituary?

If the deceased was active on social media and you'd like to share their profiles or hashtags, many publications now allow this. Just be sure to follow their guidelines for formatting and content.

What if I'm unsure about what to say in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Start by brainstorming memories and anecdotes about the deceased. You can also look at examples online or consult with others who knew them well. The goal is to capture their essence and spirit in a few paragraphs.

Can I include funeral service details in an obituary?

Absolutely! Providing details about visitation hours, funeral services, and burial arrangements helps ensure that loved ones can attend and pay their respects.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

If family members or friends have differing opinions about what should be included in the obituary, try to find common ground through open communication. Ultimately, it's up to the primary decision-makers (e.g., spouse, children) to make final decisions about content.
