Obituary Preview: Mrs. Doris S. Stephens (81) of Ellijay, formerly of Savannah, Georgia passed away March 21, 2022 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. Doris was born May3, 1940 in Hardeeville, South Carolina to Grover and Neta Smith. She was a 1958 graduate of Hardeeville High School and a graduate of Draughon's Business College in Savannah. She was then hired as the first female Deputy Clerk of Superior Court in Chatham County. She went on to become the first female Chief Deputy Clerk of Chatham County. She was eventually elected as the first female Clerk of Superior Court of Chatham County, a position she served in for three terms. Mrs. Stephens retired in 1996 after spending 34 years working in the Clerk's Office. She married James Stephens in 1961. They were married over 54 years until her husband's death in 2016. She was a proud wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bloomingdale. She enjoyed reading, baking, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.Doris is survived by her daughter, Denise (Maynard) Griggs of Ellijay, her granddaughter, Reagan (Kevin) Pritchett of Ellijay, beloved niece, Loraine Phillips of Bloomingdale, and other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Stephens, her parents, Grover and Neta Smith, and brother, JC Smith.A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 1:00pm at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale, Georgia with the Reverend Steven Blake officiating. There will not be funeral home visitation. Pallbearers are: Maynard Griggs, Kevin Pritchett, Kyle Boyd, Logan Thomas, Dennis Burgess and Dennis Baxter. Payne was born on June 14th, 1935 to his late parents, Arnold Eugene and Myrtle Jane (Dry) Payne in Concord, NC. Lewis was an honorably discharged, U.S. Army retiree with over 24 years of service. He also served during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Rev. Payne was of the Christian faith and a member of the Oak Hill Independent Church. He was the founder of the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Ellijay. Rev. Payne was the founder and pastor of Eagle’s Wings Ministry. Lewis was a dedicated member of the North Georgia Honor Guard for numerous years. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Payne and son, Ricky Payne.Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday March 22, 2022 from the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edward Ledford officiating. Military honors will follow in the Logan Funeral Home Pavilion with military rites performed by the North Georgia Honor Guard. After that, she owned and operated an antique store for over 10 years before retiring. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Mary Woodring. She is survived by her husband Leonard Higdon of the home. Her son Kraig Higdon. Her son Levi Higdon (Emily) and one Grandson, Winston Ryker Higdon. All of which she loved very much. As per Mrs. Higdon’s request, in lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At Mrs. Higdon’s request, she was cremated and no service is to be held.

She moved to Georgia in the late 1980s and lived in the Blue Ridge area for more than 25 years.Nancy was a devoted mother to her children as well as a champion of everyone else's children. To her friends she was known for her hearty laugh, fierce loyalty, and big heart. She was drawn to the outdoors and to nature, and loved a good campfire and the scent of sandalwood. She liked cooking almost as much as she enjoyed sharing the food she made with those around her. John's family moved to Atlanta when he was 10, growing up in the mid-town area. Johnny had a paper route that covered an area from near the Fox Theater on Peachtree all the way to the Piedmont Hospital/Darlington Apartment area. John and Hilda were married on August 19,1972, at the First Baptist Church Chapel, on Peachtree Street, by Dr. Charles Stanley. After John and Hilda were married, they moved to Fayetteville, GA. John enjoyed anything to do with cars and trucks, having an extensive career owning trucks, becoming a car dealer, owning a custom car company, hauling cars from auctions to various dealers and hauling exotic collector cars all over the country. John and Hilda are members of the Fayetteville Church of Christ. John was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Bill Wilson of Tucker, GA. Billy was Johnny's big brother and they shared the same birthday. Because of Johnny's dementia and Parkinson's, he never knew that his brother had passed away. Survivors are his wife of 49 years, Hilda DeFoor Goins, Fayetteville, GA (formerly of Ellijay), daughter Jillian Elisha Rafter and husband Aaron Ashley Rafter, Peachtree City, GA, son James "Jimmy" Elvis Goins, Fayetteville, GA; granddaughters Marlee Rayne Rafter and Livia Skye Rafter, Peachtree City, GA. John is also survived by sons from a previous marriage, John Everett Goins, III, Hiram, GA, and Jeffrey Eric Goins and wife Deb, Winston, GA, granddaughters Amylia Ruth Kosich, and Brooke Elizabeth Goins, step granddaughter Krysta Ann Fry and husband Cody, great-granddaughter Sophia Ann-Marie Kosich, and step great-grandson Parker James Fry.John is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Lee Wilson, Tucker, GA, nieces Karan Renee Wilson, Jacksonville, FL, and Lisa Michelle Wilson, Atlanta, GA, and great-niece, Raven Nichole Wilson, Atlanta, GA.
