Obituary Preview: Fredrick Jermaine Gardner, 34, was born October 1, 1981 in Beaufort, South Carolina to the late Betty Scott-Gardner and Fredrick Thomas. Fred was a loving and caring brother, uncle, son and friend; he was affectionately known by family and friends as “Fred or Unci.” He enjoyed music, especially writing and rapping his own lyrics. His passion was the songs in his head and how he “spit the flow.” Fred was well known for making you laugh about what was real for him.     He was educated in Beaufort County Schools and worked for several years in the Hospitality industry. Fred had a few challenges in life, but he was never a quitter, he always strived to reach higher grounds. He had returned to school to complete his education and would be so excited when he got that passing grade. He had a beautiful spirit, was generous, sweet and willing to help anyone even when he wasn’t well.     Fred is preceded in death by mother; Betty Scott (Gardner); one sister, Sharon Scott (Jenkins); one uncle: Jocephus Scott; one grandfather, Cephus Scott.     He is survived by his father, Freddie Thomas; grandmother Roberta Scott, uncle; Lonnie Scott; sisters; Joyce Scott, Jennifer Gardner, of Beaufort, and JoAnne Scott (Iyamu) of Georgia; one brother-in-law Robert Lee Burton of South Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other siblings (Thomas’s).

Ezekiel Johnson, Sr. - September 22, 1944 - December 11, 2015

Obituary Preview: Ezekiel Johnson Sr., the son of the late Rosa M. and Deacon Jack Johnson, was born September 22, 1944 on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. At the early age of 10, he dedicated his life to God and joined Orange Grove Baptist Church. Later he became a member of New Life Deliverance Church.      He graduated from St. Helena Island School in 1963. He began his professional career truck driving for a company Bay Ridge Lumber Company Local #255 in Jersey City, New Jersey.     He peacefully departed to be with the Lord on December 11, 2015 at home. Ezekiel was preceded in death by Jack Johnson Jr., Annie Coy and Glara J. Obituary Preview: On Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at MUSC Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina, the Master called Bro. Abraham (Abe) Anderson, Jr. from labor unto reward.  As he departed this mortal world, he shall be missed from his family circle and his community.
Bro. Abraham (Abe) was born in Beaufort County on November 7, 1947, to the late Mrs. Ellen Doctor Anderson and Mr. Abraham Anderson Sr. He attended St. Helena High School and served in the U.S. Army.
Bro. Abraham (Abe) worked as a Master mechanic in many states, including New York, New Jersey, Georgia and South Carolina.
Bro. Abraham (Abe) was a creative craftsman who could design, build or fix anything. We shall miss him, but looking to greet him around the throne where no farewell tears are shed.
Bro. Abraham (Abe) was a loving and God fearing man. He accepted the Lord Jesus at an early age and spent his life working for God by serving his people. He attended Angel on Earth Ministry, Seabrook, SC, under Rev. Henry Frazier Jr., Pastor and played the guitar. He was a mission partner with HealingWaters Mission Center, Beaufort, SC, led by Dr. Brenda B. Singleton, Pastor.
Bro. Abraham (Abe)  enjoyed his family and friends immensely and worked faithfully. Family and friends and even strangers could call him at any time to lend a helping hand in their time of need.He was a gifted musician and artist who loved playing the guitar, singing, painting and writing poems.
Bro. Abraham (Abe) was predeceased by his parents Mr. Abraham and Ellen Anderson, Sr. and his companion Ms. Frenchie Gray, Big Estate, SC.
Bro. Obituary Preview: Martha G. Watson was born to the late Moses and Rella Greene of Seabrook, SC.     Martha G. Watson accepted Christ at an early age. She received her formal education at Shanklin School in Seabrook, SC.         She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Robert L. Watson Sr. She worked for Mcleods about 28 years and later for Ms. L. Sattlefield.      Martha G. Watson fondly known as “Momma G.” She never held back on what she had to say. She knew everything and anything, but, she never went anywhere. She loved KFC chicken as well as she loved to eat candy. Martha loved to laugh and always willing to give a helping hand even if you refused it.     Martha Watson departed this life on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at her residence in the Seabrook Community. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Watson Sr., one daughter Earnestine Watson; three sons, Medicus, James and Joseph Watson; and one grand son whom she raised, Andrew Watson. She was the youngest of five sisters and seven brothers all of whom preceded her in death.     Her memory will be cherished by one son Robert L. (Gretta) Watson; one daughter Carolyn Moore; adopted grand daughter, Iona (Curtis) Green; her twin sister Mary G. Wright of Alabama; sixteen grandchildren, a host of great grand, great great grand and great great great grands; two special grandchildren Terrance (Cherita) Watson of Atlanta, GA and Carol (Randy) Jenkins of Seabrook, SC; a god daughter Debbie Harris of Arizona; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends to include a very special little one Jayla Young and Ashley Bonds her nurse with Agape Hospice.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Jake Pryor Sr., the son of Isaac Pryor and Janie Garnett Pryor, was born March 29, 1954 in Beaufort, SC. He received his formal education in the Beaufort County public school system. He was employed with Patterson Construction Company for several years before he started his own business, JP Construction.     Jake  was united in Holy Matrimony to Sandra Byson. To this union, they reared a beautiful blended family.     On Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Jake Pryor’s resident in Dale, SC, the Lord graciously strectched out his hands and welcomed His son into his arms. Jake answered God’s call and peacefully began his journey home. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, James and Issac Pryor Sr. and his sister Virginia Pryor Redd.      Jake leaves to cherish his fond memories: his loving wife of 37 years, Sandra Pryor. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy where he served his country for four years.      The year was 2000 and on January 18 Rex married Jacquelyn L. Coty Mills. The two were married for 15 years. Rex was loved by everyone be met. He greeted everyone with a big smile. His greatest pastime was challenging his nephews in a game of sports.     Rex  was  called to come to his heavenly home on Wednesday June 10 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents  John Wesley and Gladys Mills, three brothers, David R. Mills, John Wesley Mills Jr. and Willie H. Hughley and one sister Mary E. Moore.     He is survived by his Wife Jacquelyn Mills, one daughter; Shallay Mills of Cincinnati, Ohio, one son; David Mills of Dayton, Ohio; five sisters; Marilyn Witherspoon of Port Royal, SC, Faith L. Leon Bowers - April 16, 1960 - May 15, 2015

Obituary Preview: Leon Bowers was born on April 16, 1960 in Sheldon, SC to Joe and Geneva Bowers. He attended Dale Elementary School and went on to Robert Smalls Jr. High School. He extended his education and went to the Job Corp in Knoxville, TN where he graduated.  There in Knoxville, TN he met his wonderful wife, Cynthia Bowers.
Leon began pursuing a career in the medical field. At this time, he began soul seeking. He later became a tractor trailer driver where he retired due to health issues. Using his motivation and determination, he became a security guard and worked on Hilton Head Island at Sea Pines Resort for many years.
Leon entered into eternal rest on May 15, 2015.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two brothers, Jessie Bowers and Edward Bowers, one sister, Eva Mae Gadson, one sister-in-law, Shirley Bowers, one brother-in-law, Leroy Gadson and a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

He was the son of the late Jonathan and Isabell Johnson Cuthbert.     Brother Cuthbert received his formal education from Beaufort High School and graduated in 1975. After graduation, he attended Nelson Electronics Institute in Charleston, SC.     On November 3, 1980, he enlisted in the United State Navy. He received a Battle “E” Ribbon and a Sea Service Ribbon. Cuthbert was promoted to Frocked to “ET3” on June 17, 1983. He received his Honorable Discharge on September 22, 1983. Later, he became a professional truck driver for many years in Lester, Pennsylvania. Brother Cuthbert was a very giving person.      Mr. Neal “Chuck” Cuthbert entered into eternal rest on April 25, 2015 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Brother Neal “Chuck” Cuthbert was preceded by his parents and a brother, Vernon.     Those left to cherish his fondest memories are his sisters, Thelma Barbara Cuthbert, Nancy Bloomfield both of Philadelphia; brothers, Jonathan Cuthbert Jr. of St. Helena Island SC, Alvin David Cuthbert of Hilton Head Island, SC. On Saturday March 14, 2015 God whispered to Mrs. Cherry D. Powell that it was time to come home to rest. A realm where she joins her parents, sisters and brothers. She was the daughter of the late Melvin Knighton and Rosetta Knighton she was born on May 16, 1947 in Cherlston S.C.     Cherry D. Powell was educated in the Beaufort County School System. She was  employeed at various jobs but, the most rewarding and blessed job she held  was being a devoted Mom and House wife.      Cherry Dell accepted Christ at a very young age and loved God with all of her heart. She was stern yet gentle and would help anyone in need. (meant what she said and said just what she meant. She was a faithful, devoted memeber of Greater Bethel Church of Christ in  Paterson NJ. She returned to South Carolina after 40 year in Paterson NY. and joined Dale New Church of Christ under the leadership of Bishop J. Green.     Cherry Dell Powell  was united in Holy Matrimony to the late John H. Powell Sr. on December 6, 1973 this union was blessed with 7 children one of whom preceded her in death Walter M. Obituary Preview: Melissa Ann Jenkins Aiken, the daughter Henry and Essie Jenkins was born December 31,1955 on St. Helena Island. "Sista" or “Ann" as she was affectionately called by many, graduated from Beaufort High School in 1974. After completing high school, she enrolled in the Technical College of the Lowcountry where she received her Associates Degree in Nursing. In 2004, she was baptized and became a member of Scottsville Baptist Church serving on the Usher board where she desire a closer walk with the Lord.     Melissa is described by her family and friends as a person who was LOVING, GIVING, CARING, and full of energy and laughter. She was proceeded in death by her husband Joseph “Picky” Aiken of 37 years.     Peacefully on Tuesday, January 13th a compassionate friend named Jesus called his servant, Melissa Aiken from the Beaufort Memorial Hospital for a well deserved rest with her family by her side. Obituary Preview: Ms. Elizabeth White, affectionately known by her siblings as Le Le was born January 5, 1939 in Beaufort, South Carolina, daughter of the late Mr. William Mon White and Rebecca White. Five siblings preceded her in death. She departed this life on Sunday November 16, 2014 at her residence in the Jenkins Community.
Elizabeth attended Robert Smalls High School in Beaufort. She left South Carolina in 1967 and relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she became employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant.  In 1974 she returned home to South Carolina and continued working in her career as a Nursing Assistant. She was employed by Mr. Chris Campbell for more than ten years and was caretaker for both of his parents until they passed away. She then entered into retirement in 2014.     Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memory; two sons, Andrew White (Lillian) now deceased and Samuel White (Eva); three sisters, Victoria Smalls, Rev. Dr. Maybelle Scott (Frank) and Helen Harris; one brother, Paul White (Marie), eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and a special granddaughter; Tyreyah Marie and two special friends; Florence Smith and Betty White and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, Rosemary Blue and one great grandchild, Tyrone Blue.     His wife, Marjorie G. Obituary Preview: Retired Sergeant Major Jerry  Cornelius Polke and Vietnam War veteran was born March 25, 1934. He was the son of the late Mr. Isham Dinkin Polke and Mrs. Olivia J. Polke. Jerry was born and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corp.  His tenure in the military spanned a 30-year period from March 1955 - March 1985. Retired Sgt. Maj. Jerry Cornelius Polke was joined in holy matrimony to Gloria Marie Haynes of St. Helena Island, SC in August of 1955. To this union seven children were born. He was a model father. He doted on his children, loved, and adored his wife. If you were ever in their presence, you could see the love they shared radiate between he and his wife and their children.     This humble decorated military officer was the recipient of many honors to include Sharpshooter Rifle and Pistol badges, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese service medal and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He also received the Presidential Unit Citation during his tour of duty in the military. He traveled worldwide, stationed in many countries around the globe.     On Saturday morning October 18, 2014, our beloved Jerry Cornelius Polke departed us to be with Jesus. He leaves to mourn his memory a beloved and devoted wife: Mrs. Gloria Marie Haynes-Polke, 7 children; four sons; Jack Bruce Haynes-Polke of Irvine, California, Gordon Cornelius Polke, Wayne Leonard Polke of St. Helena Island, and Kenneth Gary Polke of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also loved very much, Lowell Michael Vinci, grandson from Guntersville, Alabama. Three daughters; Terrilyn Patrice Camacho, Gwendolyn Melissa Happ of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rosilyn Alicia Vinci of Virginia Beach, VA. Jerry’s 9 siblings, 5 sisters, Josephine Barbery, Bettye Kellam, Bessie Mae Bartley, Priscilla Kellam all of Jacksonville, Florida, Charlotte Thompson of Cleveland, Ohio. Four brothers, Joseph Polke, Lewis Polke, Phillip Polke and Richard Polke. 18 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service were held on Friday October. 24 at Bethesda Christian Fellowship 11:00am and burial will be at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00pm with full military honors.

Obituary Preview: Glara Johnson Ricks, the daughter of the late Rosa M. and Deacon Jack Johnson was born on St. Helena Island, South Carolina on February 18, 1941. At the early age of 10, she dedicated her life to God and joined Orange Grove Baptist Church.      She graduated from St. Helena High School in 1958, where she excelled in sports and academics. Later on, she attended Allen University in Columbia, SC where she received a Bachelor’s degree in 1962, and married her college sweetheart James D. Ricks.      She began her professional career in education at Colleton High School in Walterboro, SC where she taught Physical education, Biology, and General Science courses from 1962- 1965. She later moved to the Washington, D.C. area where she also received a Master’s degree in Education from George Washington University    in 1973. She was employed by the Charles County Schools District as a Physical Education and Health Teacher. Glara won multiple championships as a volleyball, track, and field coach while serving as the department’s chairperson. The Charles County Board of Education recognized her for the Excellent Teacher’s Award in 1995. She ended her career in education with Charles County Public Schools after 31 years of service. She was most grateful to have interacted and influenced the lives of hundreds of students and parents, who passed through the halls of schools in SC and MD from 1965-1996. Glara was a member of the MSTA, NEA, Low country Land Owners, Lands End Woodland Inc., Allen University Alumni, and The Lady’s Union.     She peacefully departed to be with the Lord on October 18, 2014 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Glara was preceded in death by two siblings Jack Johnson Jr. and Annie Coy.     She leaves to cherish her loving memories her children, James Kevin Ricks and Makina Nicole Ricks, and granddaughter Kristina Ashley Ricks; her siblings, Robbie Boles (Dasie Dean), Robert Johnson (Mirian), Ezekiel Johnson, Eddie Johnson, Ruth Archer and Julia Ealy; Uncle Samuel Johnson, Aunt Sadie Jenkins; daughter in law Yvonne Taylor; a host of loving, supportive nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Tad was married to the late Victoria “Anna” Johnson Porter, by whom he was blessed with two beautiful children, Annie Belle Porter Fripp of St. Helena Island and the late Tad Porter Jr. of Richmond, Virginia.       Tad was a member of the Orange Grove Baptist Church, where he  sang in the Senior Choir, and served as the church’s custodian for many years. His skills included fishing, carpentry and landscaping.     On Monday, September 8, 2014 Tad slipped peacefully into eternal rest.       He leaves behind one daughter, Annie Belle Porter Fripp of St. Helena island, South Carolina, one daughter in law, Inez Porter of Richmond, Virginia. One brother, John (Rachel) Porter of Port Royal, South Carolina  and one sister, Lula Allen of Bronx, New York. He also leaves behind 13 grand children, a host of great grand children, great great grand children, other  relatives and special friends.

My name is Clarence Rhodin, Sr., sometimes referred to as “Ghost Man”.  I made my entrance on this earth on June 6, 1936.  I was blessed to have two sets of loving parents, the late Eva Rhodin and the late, Jerome Ballard.
“A Time To  Learn” I received my early education at the Penn Normal School on St. Helena Island, SC.  I received my high school education at St. Helena High School, graduating in 1955.  I always had a strong desire to achieve greatness.
“A Time To Serve” God, being the source and strength of my life, led me to give my life to Christ at an early age.  As a young child, I attended Ebenezer Baptist Church.
“A Time To  Love” I have always loved music, baseball, basketball, serving in the U.S. Air Force, the US Army, and the SC National Guard.  I loved life, especially when I met the “Sweetheart of My Life”, Eva Mae Aiken, who I married on March 23, 1992.
“A Time To  Work”     I began my world in the military on July 21, 1968.  I served my country honorably until July 20, 1995.  I was a dedicated airman in the US Air Force, and was a dedicated soldier in the US Army, and the US Army Reserves.
“A Time To  Cherish” God, in His infinite wisdom, dispatched an angel on Saturday, September 6, 2014, and called me “home”.  I was preceded in death by my brother, Johnny Rhodin.I leave a legacy of love that will always be remembered and cherished by my sweetheart of 22 years, Eva Mae Rhodin; my loving children, Carol (Bernard) Liston, Denise (Greg) Hogan, Carl Rhodin, Sherrie Rhodin, Terry Rhodin, Clarence Rhodin, Jr., Doreen Rhodin and Willie Seabrook Aiken;  one brother-in-law, Terry (Tangelia) Aiken; special first cousins, Frances (Marion) Bolden and Dwight Rhodin of New York; special nieces, Deborah (Arthur) Lynard of St. Helena Island, SC, Melissa Aiken, and Anna Lee Jenkins; close and best friends, Henry Jenkins, Sr. and Andrew Holmes;12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews and other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Rodney Marty Ferrell was the first born of five children on May 3, 1960 to Martha Williams Ferrell and the late Roosevelt Ferrell in Philadelphia, PA.  When the family moved to South Carolina, Rodney attended the public schools of Jasper County, and graduated from Ridgeland High School in Ridgeland, SC.
Later, Rodney moved to New Jersey, where he attended Pisgah AME Church and sang in the choir.  When he relocated to the lowcountry of South Carolina, he attended Fisher Chapel United Methodist in Hardeeville, SC and sang in the choir there also.
At an early age, Rodney learned the fundamentals of mechanics from his father, which he enjoyed.  He went on to open his own business, Ferrell's Personal Touch in Savannah, GA, where he worked for many years, until his health began to fail.  He then retired and moved to Pineland, SC.
Rodney united in holy matrimony to Brenda Miller-Ferrell-Bush of Hardeeville, SC.  This union was blessed with four children.  Later in life, Rodney met Ms. Keisha Lee of Richmond, VA, who was a loving companion to him for several years.  During their time together, they were blessed with four children.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC, Rodney, a sweet, beautiful angel was rewarded his crown, and passed away from this life into peaceful, eternal rest.
He leaves to cherish his memory:  his mother, Martha W. He had a love for basketball and working on  the shrimp boat.
A Time To Love:     Robert Lee married the love of his life, Cynthia Jefferson on August 2, 1996, and to this union, two sons were  added to his fruit vine of wonderful children.
A Time To Die:     On Monday, August 25, 2014, God saw fit to call His child “home”, so He dispatched his heavenly angels to carry Robert Lee from labor to peaceful, eternal rest; no more suffering and nor more pain.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie Lee Jenkins; his father, John Toby Jenkins, Sr.; a brother, John T.
