He was born in Sumter County, South Carolina on March 25, 1940 to the late Hampton and Dorothea (Ramsey) Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Samuel “Butch” Miller Jr, his wife Betty Lou (Harris) Miller, his first wife Doris Rae (Barnes) Miller, brothers Freddie Miller, Willie “Buster” Miller and a sister, Marie Miller.
At an early age he moved to New York City and from there Sammie relocated to Havre De Grace , MD where he spent the majority of his adult life. From his first marriage to Doris Barnes Miller, together they had five children: Celeste Michelle, Samuel Jr. (Butch), Terry, Darlene and Scott. Later he met and married Betty Lou Harris. Together they raised their grandchildren Angela Miller Williams and Leon Sconion, Jr. as their own.
Sammie worked several jobs: Harford Memorial Hospital, Bethlehem Steel, and in his later years he became a motor coach driver. He drove for Harford County Transportation and was well known in the community. He also enjoyed driving for Golden Ring Tours and driving groups up to Atlantic City. When not driving a bus he spent most of his time on the golf course. He’s a local legend at APG’s Ruggles Golf Course where he has won a few tournaments. He was good enough to go pro and was being encouraged to do so by his big brother Buster. Putting family first, he decided to wait to qualify for the Senior Tour so he’d be available to his wife and children. He was pleased with “making the cut” for a few amateur pro tournaments. His pursuit was put aside with no regrets to become the primary caregiver for his wife Betty. His last days were spent with his loving granddaughter, Angela Williams and her family. Angela ensured that his final moments were full of love and peace.
Sammie truly loved spending time with his family and the family always had a good time laughing and sharing stories with him. Many of us will carry fond memories of laughter and good times with Sammie. Sam had a way to let each family member know that he “saw” them and he’d take time to acknowledge us all and let us know he loved us “More”. He enjoyed special relationships with his 14 grandchildren and 42 great-grands.
A man of dignity and always a gentleman, he treated all he came in contact with with the utmost respect and had a welcoming spirit! Everyone was a friend.

Shawn L. Hamilton - April 09, 1972 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (Havre De Grace)
Obituary Preview: Shawn Larmont Hamilton was born April 9, 1972, in Havre de Grace, MD. On the early morning of Wednesday, March 20, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones, he transitioned peacefully into the hands of the Lord. He was the son of Marion and Ellen Hamilton. Shawn attended Gospel Tabernacle Church at a young age and was a member of the Little Lights Choir. Recently, he accepted the full gospel and was baptized in Jesus’ name by Elder Harry Lee Jr. on January 9, 2024. As a new convert, he was faithful to his devotion time. Shawn attended Havre de Grace Elementary School and Middle School. Marion and Ellen Hamilton wanted to contribute to the character of their children through their education, so they sent their children to Bethel Christian School. Due to Shawn’s inappropriate behavior which his parents described as “intensive character building”, their children returned to public school. Shawn went to Havre de Grace High School where he was a star football player. He also played basketball, lacrosse, and ran track. Shawn enjoyed his high school years with one of his closest friends, Keith Hammond. Everyone loved Shawn, and he always enjoyed having a good time. Shawn was a true Warrior!
Shawn was affectionately called Charlie Brown, Sugar Bear, Baby Boy, Big Shawn, and more. He was a competitive person and enjoyed excelling in the sports he played. In preparation for college and recruitment, he attended Bridgton Academy prep school in Bridgton, Maine with his childhood friend and “brother” Kareem Croxsell. There they created lifelong memories. Shawn attended Bowie State University and played football with his cousin and “brother” LaCruz Dunlop. Shawn has always been a devoted friend. He never joined a fraternity, but while he was at his HBCU, he formed lifelong bonds with his football teammates, a group of guys that literally named themselves “The Sensations”. Shawn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, “We Dem Boys”! There were many phone conversations, battles, and nearly verbal assaults during the football season.
Shawn was always gainfully employed. He worked for the State of Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice as a case manager, a fiber optics engineer at Cienna, and as a logistics leader at Cytec in Havre de Grace, MD. Shawn was an active father and was blessed with one stepson Reginald Glascoe “Reggie”. Shawn loved time with his family and believed he had the best family in the world! His family felt the exact same way about him. He loved interacting with his god-children and always supported their events. Shawn had a special relationship with both his niece Shiloah and nephew Immanuel Quickley. He found great joy in being an uncle and he went above and beyond! He appreciated every opportunity to spend quality time with them. He would take them for rides, attend their school events, recreational activities, went to sporting events, and NBA games. Even when he couldn’t be there in person he would watch on TV or view videos that were taken. Uncle Shawn was a very pivotal person in their lives. He was someone they could count on. He always told them how proud he was of them. He ensured his presence was felt and if he was not available, he would send money for them. They never went without!
Shawn was a great chess player. He also enjoyed eating crabs, golfing, shopping, watching sports, playing UNO and being on his gaming system. Hanging out with the fellas and spending some quiet time at home were two of his favorite things to do. If he was home relaxing and you asked him what he was doing he would say, “I ain’t making no noise!” Shawn grew up at a time when cousins were raised like siblings, and Marcus Harris, Shawn’s oldest cousin, was his brother and best friend. Shawn was known as a devoted friend to all and gained additional brothers along the way.
If Shawn could help someone, he would and he did not look for anything in return. He would even lend money the first time and there would be no second time if you never paid him back. Shawn always spoke openly of how he wouldn’t trade his family and his family feels the exact same way about him. His dad often jokes that if he knew his kids would have turned out this good, he would have had more children. His mother said her three heartbeats were more than enough to love and appreciate. Throughout his entire life he never complained. Even while battling sickness, he fought and had faith. When he was asked “What scripture are you holding on to?”, he would say, “Mustard seed faith!”. Matthew 17:20 “...If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Shawn was a fighter and finished his course.
Shawn leaves to cherish his memory, his parents Marion and Ellen Hamilton, one stepson Reginald Glascoe, two sisters Nitrease Quickley (Marcellus), Demetria Caldwell (Raymond) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, associates, friends and best friends. Immanuel and Shiloah Quickley were his favorite niece and nephew. Shawn had 9 god-children: Shakari Dunlop, Jordan Harris, Morgan Harris, Marcus Quin Nole Jr. Ananda Nole, Thomas Hammond, Charles Hammond, Elizabeth Hammond, and Chloe Caday.

He always had an affinity for good music and cherished those moments listening to his favorite tunes and dancing with the ‘The Love of his Life!’ He cherished moments with family and friends, eating a good home cooked meal, laughing, playing games and enjoying one another’s presence.
Over the years, he worshipped faithfully at St. James A.M.E. Church in Havre de Grace, MD.
He loved Jesus, studying the Bible, going to church and his St. James church family. His ‘rich and silky smooth’ baritone voice harmonized well in the Men’s Day Choir. But, it was his family that enjoyed it most when he and the wife of his youth formed a duet to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to us. He also was a member of the Sons of Allen and served in several other capacities at church. During the very last service he was able to attend on Sunday, October 15, 2023, he was recognized and honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for ‘his leadership, service and dedication to the St. James A.M.E. Church Green Street,’ and was bestowed to the office of ‘Steward Emeritus’ by his Pastor Rev. Dr. Baron D. Young. In 2006, while visiting Rome, Italy on a ministry trip with his son, Darrell, and daughter-in-law, Sharon; he responded to the urging of the Lord and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Darrell baptized his father in Jesus’ name, after diligently searching for and finding an available hotel pool. It was this same Jesus upon whom he had always called, and whose ‘call’ he answered as he transitioned peacefully and triumphantly on February 17, 2024 just after midnight. Glory to God!

Departed: 01/29/2024 (Havre De Grace)
Obituary Preview: Oliver Gilbert Givens was born in Elkton, Maryland, on December 13, 1938, the son of nurturing parents, the late Bessie and George Givens. Oliver aged to 85 and passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, while holding the hand of his son, Terrence, whose selfless dedication to preserving his father's life was unwavering. Oliver graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1956 as a standout basketball, track, and baseball athlete. Stylish throughout his time at Carver, he was regularly called "Joe Hollywood" and "Marlon Brando."
Following high school, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1964. Post military service he began his employment career with General Cable, while also attending Golden Beacom College, where he earned an Associates Degree in Accounting.
Additionally he worked at Pirelli as well as Perry Point Veterans Hospital where he ultimately retired with many accolades for stellar performance. It is believed that his accounting degree influenced his love of all things relating to numbers, including tax preparation, the trifecta and the lottery.
Oliver loved horses and eventually was a horse owner. Two of his trotter horses participated in harness racing at tracks in Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey, and one, in particular, "Meteorite," was his pride and joy and was victorious at many of the horse racing tracks in the area. His love of the sport was infectious throughout his family.
Oliver was a sports enthusiast of the highest order. If you were ever at his home, his television was constantly tuned into some sports program, particularly during football, basketball, and golf season. A few years ago, he wrote a letter sharing his love for his favorite Philadelphia 76ers point guard, Allen Iverson. He purchased an A.I. Jersey and gifted it to his granddaughter Nia, who shared his passion and enthusiasm for the game.
In that letter, he shared stories with his children about the trips he took them to see the Philadelphia 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies play when they were young and the joy that brought him. He was avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and passed that love for them on to his daughter, Tara, who is now a crazed EAGLE FAN.
Oliver also loved elephants and had a fascinating assortment of various elephant figures he had collected from all over the country throughout the years.
THE BROTHER WAS SUAVE AND DEBONAIR and loved to look good. He aged well, and he knew it. In his early years, he liked music and was known to sing in the area.
Oliver was a life member of Wright's AME Church, where he lent support wherever possible.
Oliver faced many significant health challenges and overcame them. His resilience is truly remarkable . With the help of his son Terrence (an herbalist), diet, and exercise he reached a point to be taken off of blood pressure and heart medication. It’s heartening to know that in his final year medication was only needed to manage his pain. His strength and determination serve as an inspiration to us all.
Oliver had three children with Helen (Jenny) Givens: Oliver Givens Jr., Terrence Givens, and Tara Givens Allen. He also lovingly embraced Karen “Kay” Pinkett as his own daughter. He fiercely protected each of his children and took great pride in boasting on the accomplishments of his granddaughters.
He leaves to cherish his memory - Sons: Oliver Gilbert Givens Jr., Terrence Milton Givens; Daughters: Tara Givens Allen (Tony), and Karen “Kay” Pinkett; Brother: Charles Givens (Alena); Sister-In-Law: Bernice Givens; Granddaughters: Kira Givens and Nia Anderson; Nieces and Nephews: Andrea Givens, Gail Gay Bryant, William Ricky Henson, Melody Harmon, Mintoria (Missy) Duncan, Valerie Cooper, Thomasina Smith, Princess Givens, Herbert (Herkie) Givens, Rene Givens, Aretha Rouse, Christian Givens, Keith Ingram, Carla Givens Bigio, Charles Givens Jr., cousins, and friends.
