Obituary Preview: Reuben Earl Thornton, III recently passed away peacefully at his home on Lake Martin, Alabama after a very private and gallant battle against Glioblastoma. He was surrounded by his loving wife Jackie, his brother Jim and devoted rescue dog, Flea. Reuben was born on February 4, 1957 in Montgomery to R. E. Thornton, Jr. and the late Marion Pratt Nolan. He is predeceased by his beloved in laws, Archie and Cornelia Taylor, his grandparents Colonel Gordon Pratt and Rosalie Kulmus Pratt, R.E. Thornton, Sr. and Nell Northcutt Thornton, and his infant brother Wesley Hilton Thornton.He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife Jackie, his father R. E. Thornton, Jr., his brother Jim and his sister, Christine Thornton Taylor (Sean) of Sandy Springs, Georgia. In addition to an army of friends and former colleagues, Reuben is survived by five nieces and nephews: Kirby Thornton (Alex), Wesley Breal (Justin), Taylor Thornton (Paige), Charlie Taylor and Rosie Taylor. He also is survived by five great nieces and nephews, Lex and John Michael Thornton of St. Louis, Ashton and Everly Breal of Pawtuxet River, Maryland and Caroline Thornton of Ramer. Reuben graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a proud member of the SAE Fraternity and for a time, the publisher of the college Greek system newspaper, The Rammer Jammer. After a successful sales career, Reuben and Jackie created and opened a USDA approved frozen casserole manufacturing company, the Dirt Road Gourmet, in the Red Hill area. Throughout the Southeastern United States, Reuben created long lasting friendships and relationships in the grocery business and took an unknown brand to great success. One of his greatest joys was the fact that the business continues today, under new ownership, with its long term employees in its original location. Reuben Thornton was truly a Southern gentleman and a friend of friends who loved the song of life. His humble, caring heart and quiet presence endeared him to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.At Reuben’s request, there will be no funeral or visitation. A private family service will be held in the Chapel at Children’s Harbor. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Clyde D. Obituary Preview: Mark Buce, 59, left this world to be with our Father in heaven on Monday, May 30, 2022. Even though a failing heart suddenly took him away from this world, his loving heart left a beacon of light for all in the community. Mark was born to Archie and Dorothy Buce on December 16, 1962, in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended the Tallassee School System and continued his education at Auburn University in Montgomery. Destined to be an entrepreneur, Mark found great success in all of his chosen endeavors. He worked diligently at the Cotton Mill in Tallassee and went on to own a florist shop and a convenient store known as “The Y,” which ultimately led to the conception of his own prosperous and successful car dealership. It is here, that he solved many of the world’s problems with his beloved friends and community members. Naturally, he excelled as a salesman and business owner due to his sincere honesty, vast intellect and ability to quickly establish rapport with all those he met. His talents far exceeded the business world as he was also known as an excellent singer and a soothing voice to those who were the closest to him. As the years passed, his love of music grew, cultivated by his tenure at WLWI as Radio Host in Montgomery. He also graced the airwaves on his CB Radio with the two perfect handles of the “Southern Gentleman” and “Uncle Roy.” Humble and hardworking, straightforward yet compassionate, Mark epitomized the quintessential gentleman, as a businessman, loyal friend and a devoted family man. He had many joys in life, including Alabama football and boating on Lake Martin, however, his greatest joy of his life was his family. He was a loving Husband, Father, and “Papa,” and his ultimate pride and joy were his grandchildren of whom he loved dearly. Mark is survived by his wife, Ramona Buce along with his children, Mallory Buce, Megan Buce, Lee Thornton-Allison and Luke Ledbetter-Sadie; grandchildren, Cade, Liam, Channing, Maddy, Jaxton, Michael, Hartley and Ruby; brother, Nickey Buce (Myrtle); sister, Brenda Buce; nephew, Todd Buce (Jessica); nieces, Donna Russell, Dana Cheek and Paige Swinson. He had served as an ordained minister with United Pentecostal Church, International and served as Section 4 Presbyter for several years. He was the founding pastor of Gateway Pentecostal Sanctuary in Opelika, AL. A native of Macon County, Freddie was born Jan. 3, 1944, the son of Gladys Evelyn Ledbetter and Lucullus Eldred Patterson of Macon County.Freddie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janice Cochran Patterson of Tallassee. Together they raised three children: Stacey Patterson Worley (Christian), Les Patterson (Susan) and Lance Patterson (Susan). Their grandchildren include Meghan Wood-Olsen (Tyler), Jessica Patterson, Ashley Worley, Laney Green and Ryan Green; and a great grandson, William Vines. Other survivors include a brother, Kenneth Patterson (Tammie), and several nieces and nephews. Freddie was preceded in death by his parents.Freddie graduated from Macon County High School where he played football and basketball. He graduated from Auburn University in 1969. Following a brief career with Alabama Power Co., Freddie began his career with the Alabama Farmers Federation on Nov. 18, 1974, as an area organization director. In 1985, he was named director of the Women’s Division for the Federation, a job that included working with Alabama legislators. In July 2000, he was promoted to the position of director of the Federation’s Governmental Affairs Department, a position he held until his retirement on Dec. 1, 2007.During his 33-year career with the state’s largest farm organization, Freddie earned a reputation as one of the foremost proponents of Alabama agriculture and was a formidable adversary to those who would dare encroach upon the rights of the state’s farmers. He helped establish Alabama Ag in the Classroom, was a steering committee member of the Alabama Rural Health Association and served on the board of directors of PALS (People Against a Littered State). Freddie was also active in his community, serving leadership roles in several philanthropic organizations. He served on the Tallassee Parks and Recreation Board and was a president of the Tallassee Jaycees. In 1972, he was named an Outstanding Young Man of America. He was an elder and lay speaker at the First Presbyterian Church of Tallassee where he was superintendent of Sunday School, and for 20-plus years he taught Sunday School for residents of the Tallassee Nursing Home. His love of football was legendary in his adopted hometown of Tallassee. He served as the stadium announcer for the Tallassee High School Tiger football team for more than a decade.Always a snappy dresser, Freddie was known for his quick wit, tenacity, optimism, friendship, sense of humor and storytelling abilities. His broad circle of friends included some of the most influential political leaders and farmers across the state, and he never forgot his humble roots, nor was he ever too busy to be kind to those he loved or to a stranger in need. He was a staunch follower of Auburn University football and a fan of the fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He enjoyed golf and spending time with his family. He frequently shared his funny stories, life experiences and wisdom with friends and family.He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
