Blair Peterson - November 19, 1963 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Harmony)
Obituary Preview: Blair Chalmers Peterson III (60) of Eagan, MN passed away unexpectedly after a short illness.
Blair was born on November 19, 1963, in Havey, IL to Blair Jr and Janet (née Graham) Peterson. Blair was raised in Chicago Heights, IL with his younger brother and sister. After graduation, he went to Winona State University (probably more for the fishing than the academics). There he met his wife, Rachel (née Trouten). After college, he moved with his family to Arizona and Rachel soon followed. They were married on March 8, 1986, in Phoenix and soon after, started their family. After about 11 years of desert heat (not to mention the terrible fishing), they moved their family up to Minnesota and have lived in Eagan ever since.
Blair worked at Cabela’s, where he loved to laugh and talk to customers all day. He especially appreciated it when people brought in their kids or dogs – and the discounts on fishing equipment was a huge perk! But to be fair, Blair could strike up a conversation anywhere. If he went to the store or gas station, people knew him. Sending him to the grocery store quick to pick up a missing ingredient for dinner would be no less than a 30-minute adventure making friends everywhere he went.
But fishing wasn’t the most important thing in his life – family was. He loved spending time with his family, but if he couldn’t, he talked to them frequently on the phone. The best days of his life were when they were all together. To be honest, it was usually fishing, but just spending time together was the important thing. He loved golfing and playing games with the kids or creating memories with them. He was so excited to hear the family was getting even bigger. Welcoming his granddaughter gave him another person to love.
Blair was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Blair & Mary Jane Peterson and Earl & Nona Graham, and his mother-in-law, Marilyn Trouten.
He is survived by his wife Rachel and sons Blair, Jacob (Tosha) & Zachary (Sophie) and his granddaughter Brinley. He is also survived by his brother Bruce (Vicki) and sister Jeanne (Chris) Spahle, his father-in-law Bob Trouten, his brothers-in-law, Bill (Renita) Trouten, Scott (Lorrie) Trouten, Jason (Jessica) Trouten and a number of wonderful nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday afternoon. Burial will take place at Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Paula Michel - August 08, 1939 - January 22, 2023

Departed: 01/22/2023 (Harmony)
Obituary Preview: Paula Smutny Michel passed away peacefully late on January 22, 2023, in Harmony, MN, following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 83. ****A Celebration of Life has been planned for Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the Harmony Golf and Country Club beginning at 2:00 pm.  All are welcome!
Paula was born in Des Moines, IA on August 8, 1939, to Alice (Miller) and Ralph Stutsman, a registered nurse and an office equipment and business forms salesman. She was an only child.
She described herself as a “painfully shy and mousy child” who was “afraid of everything.” At 15, her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Paul Schweikher asked her to spend the summer in Europe with them to help keep her 9-year-old cousin, Paul Jr. company. The trip was a life-changing experience, exposing her to the art, architecture, and history that she fell in love with and referenced the rest of her life. It instilled the desire to prioritize exposing her family to travel and culture. All of Paula’s family vacations involved learning about other cultures, historical sites, architecture, and art.
Paula graduated from high school in Des Moines, IA in 1957. Two of her good friends were a black student and a gay student, who left her with a life-long commitment to civil rights, social justice, personal freedom, and sympathy for the underdogs in society. Her progressive nature and belief in the value of education and cultural enrichment drove many of her community efforts in Harmony.
She graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, IA with a BA in History. It was at Cornell that she met and fell in love with fellow history student, Michael Smutny who’d followed his older sister to Cornell College from their home on the south side of Chicago. She and Michael were married just after graduation on June 17, 1961.
Paula spent the summer before her senior year working as a waitress in the restaurant in the Chicago Art Institute where she spent many hours browsing the galleries. Paula also spent a semester studying in Washington DC at the Library of Congress. She loved research and the value of organized access to information which led to her decision to pursue a master’s degree in Library Science. She was accepted at the University of Chicago as well as the University of Minnesota where she attended and graduated while Michael attended the University of Minnesota law school. She gave birth to Michael Sheridan Smutny II in July of 1963 while they finished school, living in an apartment just west of campus in Minneapolis.
They decided that they wanted to raise their family in a small town so began the search for law firms looking for young associates. They landed in Adams, MN where they lived for two years and made a life-long friendship with the very creative and musical Winkles family. In 1965, Michael was offered a partnership with George Frogner in Harmony, MN. They quickly adapted to small town life, joining the Harmony Golf Course and Country Club where Michael’s creative inclinations and Paula’s skills as a seamstress fueled many years of elaborate costumes at the annual Halloween parties. Michael participated in several community theater projects, and Paula created many of the show’s costumes. In November of 1965, Paula gave birth to David Forrest Smutny.
Wanting to utilize her degree, Paula joined the local Library board and was instrumental in helping to get the new library included as part of the construction of the Harmony Community Center. It was relocated from its cramped, former home in the fire station building. She was also instrumental in the development of SELCO (Southeastern Libraries Cooperating) which coordinated multiple area library collections together to allow for integration and intra-library loans so that small towns could greatly expand their access to more material. Paula took over as Librarian in September of 1979 where she stayed until her retirement in 2001. She loved her role as Harmony’s librarian. Few things made her happier than being able to find the information people were looking for or helping students locate research material. She was Google to the Harmony community before the internet made information so easily accessible. She was an avid reader and loved recommending books. Her favorite genre was mysteries. She read several a week. One of the saddest aspects of her dementia diagnosis is that it robbed her of the ability to enjoy books.
In 1975, the family had finally saved enough for a real vacation and Paula, who had always been fascinated by archeology and anthropology, wanted to visit either the Egyptian pyramids at Giza, the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu, or the Mexican Aztec and Mayan pyramids. She landed on the Mayan sites of Chichen Itza and Uxmal in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula and the resort island of Cozumel. Decades later, she would volunteer to participate in an archeological dig at a native American site in northern Minnesota.
The Mexican vacation led Paula to suggest hosting a summer foreign exchange student. This led to another life-long friendship with the Bravo family in Mexico City. The family hosted Alejandro Bravo a second summer when Paula suggested taking the family to Washington DC and Williamsburg for the Bicentennial. The following summer Paula encouraged son, Mike to spend the summer in Mexico City and Alejandro’s brother Luis visited Harmony. The family spent many vacations with the Bravos in Mexico until Michael Sr.’s death in January of 1981.
Being widowed at 41 was a devastating blow. She was supported by many friends in the community, most notably, Bunny Michel and Betty Jaeb, both of whom she would lose soon after in 1982 and 1987 respectively. In the spring of 1983, Paula was asked out by recently widowed, Vernon Michel and they were married soon after on August 6, 1983. They enjoyed many years of travel including to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. Coming from a small family, Paula relished being part of Vernon’s large family and became an enthusiastic stepmother, step-grandmother, and eventually step-great-grandmother.
Paula had been active for several years promoting the charm of southeastern Minnesota’s burgeoning Bluff Country as a Midwest tourism destination. She and Vernon made a good team as Vernon became interested in the tourism opportunities associated with the local Amish community and forged relationships with several Amish families, prompting the formation of Michel Farm Vacations of which Paula was a board member and spent many years helping to develop and promote the tour and retail businesses. Vernon expanded his vision by developing the Edward Allis farmstead between Preston, MN and Lanesboro, MN as the Old Barn Resort, opening in 1990.
Always interested in the theater, Paula was a long-time supporter of the Commonweal Theatre in Lanesboro, MN, both financially and as an avid patron and vocal champion. Paula also invested in the Quarter/Quarter restaurant to help bring more varied dining options to Harmony.
One of Paula’s proudest endeavors was a mischievous prank. She and two of her closest friends, Marietta Dennstedt and Marilyn Trouten, “kidnapped” Marvin Wilt’s scarecrow (wearing a marching band uniform), created as part of Harmony’s Fall Foliage Festival event, sending elaborate ransom notes and eventually returning it “unharmed” when their “demands” were met. The team successfully kept their identities secret for over a decade until they finally decided to reveal themselves after the years of speculation had become local lore.
As Vernon’s health declined before his death in 2010, Paula maintained her love of the arts by continuing to write local arts grants to bring visiting musical, cultural, theatrical, and educational events to Harmony. Those efforts lead to her nomination to the committee that evaluates and recommends selection of the grant applications to receive the dedicated funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. She also provided editorial support for the Harmony Area Historical Society’s publication of the book, “Let’s Have Harmony”, a history of the city. Paula loved Harmony dearly and would volunteer for almost any effort to better or promote the community.
Paula was endlessly proud of her sons, their spouses, and children. She loved hosting her grandchildren for their annual summer visits to experience the joys and freedoms of small-town life coming from the big cities of Minneapolis and Washington DC. One of her last trips before her diagnosis was to Washington DC for her granddaughter, Caroline’s high school graduation from the Washington International School. She visited Smithsonian museums and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water and took David and Kathleen's two rescue pit bull dogs on endless long walks.
Paula is survived by two sons, Michael II (Jane Theodore) of Chicago and David (Kathleen Benway) of Seattle, and four adult grandchildren: Connor Smutny, Caroline Smutny, Mia Smutny, and Eli Smutny. The family suggests that memorials in Paula’s honor be dedicated to one or more of the following: The Harmony Public Library (harmony.lib.mn.us) The Commonweal Theatre (commonwealtheatre.org) The Animal Humane Society (animalhumanesociety.org) Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (philanthropy.mayoclinic.org)

Departed: 11/30/2022 (Harmony)
Obituary Preview: Steven Alan Lindstrom, age 69 of Harmony, Minnesota, died Wednesday, November 30, 2022.
A Mass will be held at 11:00am, Monday, December 5, 2022 at St. Columban Catholic Church in Preston, MN, with visitation an hour prior to Mass. A Celebration of Life will be held following Mass at the Harmony Golf Club.
Steve was born on October 2, 1953, the son of Patricia (Fandel) Lindstrom and Joseph Lindstrom (Carol). He attended school in Rockwell City, Iowa. After high school, he attended Mankato State University to study construction management. It was there that he met the love of his life, Connie Iverson. Steve and Connie were united in marriage October 20, 1979. To this union, two children were born, Jennifer and Matthew.
Steve worked construction for several years before starting his own construction business, Lindstrom Construction, which earned him his nickname known by so many, “Lumber”. Steve is credited for building countless homes in Southeast MN and Northeast IA. He was very well known for his impeccable finish work, which was second to none. His family was able to enjoy living in three of the beautiful homes that he built.
Steve and Connie managed the Harmony Golf Club for 20 years. Steve loved maintaining the beautiful look of the fairways, but his great love were the greens. He took great pride in the fertilizing, care, and beauty of the greens, while also making them challenging for golfers. The pin placements were especially tough on tournament days.
Most recently, Steve was the Director of Maintenance at Gundersen Harmony Care Center. Steve could be seen laughing and visiting with the residents, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Steve was an avid Gophers and Vikings fan, even though some years he questioned that loyalty. He loved to golf especially on Thursdays with his beloved group on Men’s’ Night. He rarely, if ever, missed participating in a golf tournament at Harmony Golf Course.
Another passion of Steve’s was coaching. He coached boys and girls basketball for a total of 14 years at Fillmore Central Schools. Between traveling league for Matt and his classmates and the countless players at Fillmore Central, he made a lasting impact. He was very passionate about not only the game, but all the individuals he coached and encouraged.
Steve’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He loved supporting his children in their lives and was so proud of the people they have become. The births of his grandsons Keagan and Cooper were two of the highlights of his life. He adored them, loved to be around them, and the love for those boys was radiant. To say he was a proud husband, father, and Papa is an understatement.
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife Connie; daughter Jennifer (TJ); son Matt (Tricia); grandsons Keagan and Cooper; brother Mike (Janis); sisters-in-law Diane (Gene) Hoffman; Kay (Bill) Pompeii; Mary (Doug) Austin; several nieces, nephews and cousins, his beloved dog Murphy and grand dogs Bentley and Pepper.
Preceding him in death are his parents Joseph and Patricia, step mother Carol; mother and father-in-law Mel and Bun Iverson; sister and brother-in-law- Bob and Colleen Brownlow.
The Lindstrom family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of Gundersen Harmony Care Center and Clinic and the Harmony Ambulance crew members for their care and comfort.
Memorials may be directed to the Harmony Community Foundation (earmarked for the Splash Pad) or an organization of your choice in Steve’s honor.

Dan Broadwater - December 14, 1948 - May 04, 2022

Departed: 05/04/2022 (Harmony)
Obituary Preview: Danny Fay Broadwater, age 73, passed away peacefully on 04 MAY 22, at Broadwater’s Red Acres. He loved his little slice of heaven on earth and was most content leaning on the fence watching his cattle graze.
Dan was born on 14 DEC 48, to Clair and Marion (Dodge) Broadwater; he was the second baby born at the “old” Harmony Hospital. He attended Prairie Queen Country School and then Harmony Area Schools, graduating in 1966. He played the baritone in the high school band and continued playing later in life as part of the Harmony Community Band. He attended Austin Vocational Technical School for welding which led to a lifelong love of fabricating and building useful things for his farm.
He was drafted on 25 FEB 69 and served in the United States Army as a conscientious objector; he was an Army Medic at Camp Kaiser and Camp Young, South Korea. He was honorably discharged on 18 FEB 71. Dan married Kathleen Kaye Fishbaugher on 8 JUL 72. Together they purchased an 80-acre farm and continued to work side by side for the next 50 years. He was looking forward to celebrating their 50th Anniversary this summer; they firmly believed that two hearts working together can accomplish more than one heart dreaming alone. In his own words, “I am thankful to have been able to raise our four children on the farm. We are proud of what we have accomplished on this farm.”
Dan worked for Pederson Brothers, driving cement truck, building bridges, and welding, until 1973 when he went to work for his Uncle Paul at Broadwater Plumbing and Heating. In 1974, when he became sick of eating a sack lunch every day, they built a new dairy barn and silo on their farm. Dan and Kathy spent many years breeding their dairy herd to be red and white Holsteins so he would know whether it was his cattle out or the neighbors! Broadwater’s Red Acres received numerous Excellence Awards for top quality milk production over the years; they sold their dairy herd in 2004. He continued to raise heifers for a few years and helped his son with custom chopping. He enjoyed visiting with his Amish friends and driving the countryside to check the crops.
He volunteered his time with the American Legion Post 81, the Fillmore County American Dairy Association and served on both the Harmony and Fillmore Central school boards. He was proud to have had the opportunity to hand all of his children their high school diplomas. Whether you called him Dan, Danny, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Dan, or Grandpa Dan, all were treated as his sons and daughters.
Dan is survived by his wife, Kathy, children Julie (Kevin Tart) of Spring Valley, MN, Ben (Heather) of Greenleafton, MN, Laura (Jake) Greseth of Winona, MN, and Shauna (Nathan) Larson of St. Augustine, FL, and grandchildren Lakin, Macen and Nayli Tart, Marley and Ryley Broadwater, Penley and Summit Greseth, and Tristan and Clair Larson. He is also survived by his brothers Tom (Deanna) of Rochester, MN, John (Joan) of Winona, MN, and Dick (Nancy) of Greenleafton, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents.
See you later, My Farmer, spring field work has just begun.

Obituary Preview: Charles Berning passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at The Harmony Place in Harmony, MN at the age of 76 after a long fight with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
Charles Darrol Berning was born in Cresco Iowa on July 21, 1945. He was the second of three sons born to Darrol and Elvira (Scheevel) Berning. He attended Bristol Grove Country School and later graduated from Harmony High School. Charles and his brothers spent much of their childhood years working together on the family farm, milking cows, and tending to the daily chores. They regularly found time to sneak in some baseball, basketball, football, and boxing while their father would catch an afternoon nap.
While in high school, a sweet girl by the name of Phyllis Junge caught the eye of Charles. They began dating at age 16 and were inseparable over the next fifty plus years. Charles and Phyllis were married on August 4, 1965, at the Co-Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Rochester, MN. They built a home together in Stewartville, MN, and here is where they would begin their young family. In 1976 they moved to Kellogg, MN where they would enjoy the “river house”. Raising their children, Brenda, and Robert, along the Mississippi River would be an opportunity for many memories to be made. This was a perfect spot for an avid angler like Charles. Even with the Mississippi in his backyard, Charles was still eager to head to Canada to catch some walleye.
Charles’ working career was that of a dedicated steamfitter. He worked for HiMEC Mechanical at the Franklin Heating Station (for most of his years) in Rochester, MN. Upon retirement, Charles and Phyllis moved to Rochester in 2001 to be closer to family. He adored his grandchildren, and had an intense love to be part of all their activities.
Charles was quite the athlete. He played football, basketball and baseball in high school and continued playing fast pitch softball for many years thereafter. He played for several teams over the years and was known for his excellent abilities as a catcher and hitter. Charles enjoyed a game of golf, watching the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. He also had the opportunity to travel the world with Phyllis and enjoyed several cruises over the years.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two children, Brenda (Steve) Guidinger of Kellogg, MN and Robert Berning of Ft Myers, FL, three grandchildren: Mikala (Joe) Wodarek, Michael (fiancé Samantha Grabau) Guidinger and Brayden Berning and two brothers, James (Joan) Berning and Lester (Carla) Berning.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis (2020) and a grandson, Nikolas Berning (1995).
A memorial gathering for Charles and Phyllis Berning will be held on May 15, 2022, at Estelle’s (121 Main Ave N Harmony, MN) from 1-3:00 pm. Lindstrom Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

William "Bill" Bellingham - May 11, 1927 - February 08, 2022

Departed: 02/08/2022 (Harmony)
Obituary Preview: William George Bellingham, age 94, died February 8, 2022, at the Green Lea Senior Living facility in Mabel, Minnesota.
Bill Bellingham was born on May 11, 1927, to George and Henrietta (Dreier) Bellingham on the family farm in Bristol Township in rural Preston, Minnesota. His childhood was spent on the farm with his parents and his brother, J. Robert Bellingham.
Bill attended Bristol Center School and as a young man was an excellent baseball player on the local Harmony Town Team. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1945, proudly serving his country until he was honorably discharged in 1947.
On June 3, 1950, Bill married Carmen Elton at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. They were blessed with four children: Nancy, Margaret, John, and Donald. The couple lived on the family farm their entire lives, raising their children in the same house Bill had been born in and serving as dedicated stewards of the Bellingham land. Bill was always proud of the crops and livestock he raised, and until just a few years ago could still be found on a John Deere tractor or combine at harvest time. For decades the Bellingham farm always had a collie dog, and all the collies Bill had over the years were named Scottie. He loved what wonderful and smart companions collies made.
An avid sports fan, Bill was always up for taking in a good game of baseball, football, or basketball. The Minnesota Twins and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were his favorite teams, but he loved to watch and talk about any sports team — and could usually recite an impressive amount of information about each team's stats and players. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren compete in the sports they loved.
Community service was also important to Bill. He served on the Harmony Area School Board for seven years and as chairman of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for six years, and often quietly supported his community and neighbors in ways both big and small. He lived a life of integrity, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Bill is survived by his children, Nancy (Brian) Houdek of Ankeny, Iowa, John (Debbie) Bellingham of Faribault, Minnesota, and Don Bellingham of Preston, Minnesota; eight grandchildren: Michelle (Jeremy) Stubbe of Ankeny, Iowa, Eric Houdek of Grimes, Iowa, Nathan Ayers of Marengo, Illinois, Brandon (Giana) Ayers of Aurora, Illinois, Kari (Cody) VanDerVeen of Faribault, Minnesota, Bill (Megan) Bellingham of Rochester, Minnesota, Sarah (Eric) Laitinen of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Robert Bellingham of Harmony, Minnesota; ten great-grandchildren: Brooke and Macy Stubbe, Lincoln and Amalia Ayers, Brenna and Owen VanDerVeen, Max and Henry Bellingham, and Logan and Lainey Laitinen; and numerous family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carmen; daughter Margaret Ayers; son-in-law Jim Ayers; his parents; in-laws, Marvin and Tressie (Alfson) Elton; and brother Robert Bellingham.
A special thank you to Moments Hospice for their special care.
