James T. Simonds Jr - May 01, 1929 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: James T. Simonds Jr. died April 1, 2024. He was born in Chicopee MA on May 1, 1929, the son James T. Simonds Sr and Anna Rose (Connor) Simonds. Jim attended Cathedral High School in Springfield. He was a 47 year employee of Spalding Sports Worldwide holding several manufacturing positions ranging from tennis racket stringing to Golf Ball Finishing supervisor, retiring in 1992.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Teresa (O’Toole) Simonds as well as sons Brian Simonds and his wife Kate of East Longmeadow and Vincent and his wife Ashley of Brimfield, six grandchildren Finley, Liann and her husband Jack Thomae, Maggie, Maura, Catherine, and Caileen. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Mallalieu and brother Francis X. Simonds along with numerous nieces and nephews where he was known as Uncle Brud. Jim was predeceased by sisters Marion Fonfara, Ruth Boucher, and brothers Robert Simonds and Thomas Simonds.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He dedicated much of his life to service as demonstrated by his long tenure with the Knights of Columbus, having served as the Grand Knight of the Springfield based Home City Council for many, many years. Fiercely proud of his Irish heritage, he was also a long time member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club and was a past champion of the Sunday Afternoon Pitch Society.
An avid sportsman, Jim was an early adopter of long distance running competing for many years in local road races dating back to the early 1970’s. He was also a competitive bowler and golfer having played for many years in various Spalding leagues.
But perhaps Jim’s greatest legacy is his devotion to family, sacrificing much of his personal ambition from a very early age to provide for his 6 brothers and sisters. Growing up in the depths of the depression framed the manner in which he lived his life – hard work, generosity, and putting others before himself. This was no more evident than his devotion to his wife Teresa, to whom he was dedicated to until his very last days.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Chestnut Hill Nursing Home of East Longmeadow MA and the staff at Saint Catherine’s parish, most notably Deacon Jack who was always there for the family.
Visitation will be Friday April 5th from 4-7pm at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres 21 Tinkham Road Springfield MA. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday April 6th , with the public invited to meet directly at 10:00 am at Saint Catherine of Siena 1023 Parker Street Springfield, MA.
