Ferne Crissman - October 31, 1932 - April 11, 2022

Departed: 04/11/2022 (Ipswich)
Obituary Preview: The Memorial Service for Ferne Crissman, 89, Ipswich will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at First Baptist Church, Ipswich, SD. Pastor Dan Kuno will officiate. A private family inurnment will follow at Ipswich Southside Cemetery. Ferne passed away peacefully on Monday, April 11, 2022, at the home of her son David Crissman in Mina, SD.
Olive Ferne Hartzell Crissman was born October 31, 1932 (Halloween) to Helen Jeanette Humiston Hartzell and Hilbert Harrison Hartzell (Pood) at Powell, SD. She was the seventh in their large family of eventually eight children. The children were Harrison, Robert, Dorothy, Richard, Warren, Elizabeth, Olive Ferne, and Gayle.
Ferne and her siblings grew up first on a farm SE of Ipswich and later on Homewood just east of Ipswich. They had no TV, cell phone, and not many games. They had a radio that ran on batteries. Their telephone hung on the wall, and they were on a party line. They had very few books and that is why Ferne became a bookworm once she grew up.
One hot summer day, on the old farm, a car stopped at the house. It was Howard Samp. Howard invited the Hartzell kids to Bible School at First Baptist Church. After that Helen and the kids attended Sunday School and church at First Baptist and became members. Ferne was a lifelong member at FBC in Ipswich.
Ferne started to work for Mrs. Perisho when she was about 12. Ferne did housework, mostly cleaning and dishes. Eventually, she typed papers for Mrs. Perisho, working for her all the years Ferne was in school. Mrs. Perisho sent Ferne to Camp Judson one summer. It was the old Camp Judson located under Pactola Reservoir now. Mrs. Perisho paid half of the registration and Ferne paid half from her earnings. The camp was very rustic, no heat, no running water, no glass windows, just screens and it was cold at night. Ferne asked Christ into her life that week and was baptized on Halloween night.
Ferne met Earle Crissman at a joint meeting of the Baptist and Congregational youth groups, and they dated during high school. Earle was two years older, so he went on to college, but Ferne was busy finishing high school and all the activities that went with school. Ferne graduated in 1950. They dated throughout Ferne’s final two years, writing letters and seeing each on weekends or vacations.
Helen, Ferne, and Gayle moved to California so Ferne could go to college in August after Ferne’s graduation. If you were a resident of California, you could go to college for free. They lived with relatives in Woodlake and Ferne went to the College of the Sequoias in Visalia.
Toward the end of the school year Ferne wrote Earle a letter saying she wasn’t going back to Ipswich. She got a letter from Earle telling her she should think it over before making a decision. Then Earle called and offered to pay Ferne’s way back! Then Earle said he would come and get Ferne! Ferne’s Mom (Helen) said she wouldn’t tell Ferne what to do but if Ferne wanted to go back to Ipswich, she’d buy Ferne a bus ticket back. Ferne had never ridden the bus on a cross country trip and never alone. Ferne wrote Earle a postcard telling him to meet the bus in Aberdeen and at what time. She mailed it just before she got on the bus in California. Back in those days there was a large bus station at the SW corner of 6th Ave and Main St in Aberdeen. Ferne got off the bus at the bus station and Earle wasn’t here to meet the bus. Ferne telephoned the drug store. Earle answered and asked where she was. He had not gotten the postcard! (It came the next day).
Ferne got a job in Aberdeen and shared an apartment with some other girls through the summer. As fall was approaching and they were wrestling with their future, Earle solved the problem by proposing. Earle and Ferne were married Sept. 8, 1951, at Earle’s parents’ home. They lived in married student housing (a little trailer) in Fargo for a year while Earle was attending NDAC (NDSU) and finishing his pharmacy degree. They were married 65 years and held special celebrations on the 50th and 60th anniversaries.
Earle and Ferne had five children–Mona (Ron) Gleysteen, Jerry, David (Cherie), and twin girls, Jody (Brian) Bolinske and Judy (Jack) Waldman. The family lived in Ipswich and attended the First Baptist Church. They had a busy life with Earle working in the drugstore on Main Street and Ferne taking care of the children. During the fall, winter, and spring, they were involved in school and church activities. The family took lots of summer vacations and especially to Camp Judson. They spent most afternoons and evenings at Mina Lake during the hot months. Earle and Ferne did get some traveling in after the children were out of the house. They traveled with Starburgs to Israel and on many other adventures (Alaska, Idaho, Texas, Montana). They moved to the home they built on Mina Lake during their retirement years until Earle’s health forced them to move back to Ipswich.
Ferne went to Presentation College for a nursing degree when Jody and Judy were done with high school. She worked briefly at the Ipswich hospital but then her mother needed full time care. When her mother passed on, Earle’s mother needed assistance and Ferne took on the job. Finally, in 2013 when Earle was incapacitated, Ferne became his primary care giver until Earle died in 2016.
Ferne had a beautiful soprano voice and enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the piano. She was quite “crafty” and enjoyed various projects especially when entertaining the grandchildren. She was a voracious reader, especially Christian Bible study material and the Bible. Ferne was a Christian and would like all of her family to know how important Jesus was to her. Ferne is survived by her gang which includes her 5 children and spouses, 15 grandchildren and 10 spouses, 32 great-grandchildren, her sisters Gayle and Betty, one sister-in-law Marian Crissman Gilbert, and many nieces and nephews Arrangements are with Leonard-Gramm Funeral Home of Ipswich. Condolences and memories may be shared with her family and flowers ordered at www.leonardfh.com

Skeeter and JoAnn were both avid sports fans. Whether it was a grandson’s soccer match in Rapid City or the little boy down the road’s 2nd grade basketball game in Ipswich, they were there. They supported their grandkids’ 110% and rarely missed anything they were participating in. They still followed the Ipswich sports teams even 20+ years after their own kids graduated. They were their kids’ #1 fans and their grandkids’ #1 SUPER fans. If a child was fundraising for a sport or school, Skeeter and JoAnn would always buy two.
Skeeter loved all sports, especially baseball, and was a HUGE Red Sox fan, which later down the road led to some interesting conversations with his son-in-law Travis, who is a Yankees fan. Skeeter also enjoyed helping the refs out by pointing out any call they may have missed or gotten wrong.
Grateful for having shared Skeeter’s life are his late wife: JoAnn Miller, sons: Todd Miller and Jake Miller; daughter: Lorrie (Travis) Palmer; brother: Donald ‘Porky’ (Michelle) Miller; one nephew and grandchildren: Austin Tran, Zachary Palmer, Tyson Aberle, Jameson Palmer, Christian Palmer, Trey Miller and Jerzey Miller.

Robert "Bob" Geditz - June 21, 1930 - November 28, 2021

Departed: 11/28/2021 (Ipswich)
Obituary Preview: Mass of Christian Burial for Robert ‘Bob’ Geditz, 91, Ipswich, will be at 10:30am Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Ipswich, SD. Father Timothy Smith, Father Roger Geditz and Father J.P. Morgan will serve as Concelebrants. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7pm, Friday, December 3, 2021 followed by a Liturgical Wake Service at 7:00pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Bob was born on June 21, 1930 on the family homestead to Peter Geditz, Jr and Josephine (Sindelar), the first of 14 children. His early school years were at a country school not far from the family farm and he graduated from Ipswich Public School in 1948. Dad’s nickname was “Bowz”, a name he received from his father. In his youth, he enjoyed playing football, baseball, and track. He did well at running the 220-yard dash.
Dad worked on the family farm while growing up until being inducted into the Armed Forces in 1951, earning three Bronze Service Stars and attaining the rank of Corporal. He served his country willingly and patriotically. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Following serving in Korea, Dad attended Northern State College where he earned a degree in teaching.
After graduating in 1957, he married Lillian Lacher. They moved to Beaver Creek, Minnesota where Dad taught English for a year. He came to a decision that farming was more his passion, purchasing a farm not far from his family’s farm. Dad was a steward of his farm land and had a green thumb for sowing a large garden. He was especially skilled at growing carrots and sharing what he grew with relatives and friends. He was very fond of farm animals including cattle, pigs, chickens, dogs, and cats. During his years on the farm, Dad and Lilly raised 12 children. Following Lilly’s passing in 1978, he worked tirelessly to continue to raise his children on the farm, instilling in them a desire to learn and a sound work ethic.
After retiring from the farm in 1997, Dad moved to Ipswich volunteering at Holy Cross School through the Foster Grandparent Program to help children learn to read, another great passion of his. He also volunteered for blood and bone marrow drives in his retirement.
Dad was jovial, had a sense of humor, and could lighten up a room with his laughter. He was known to family, friends, and townspeople as a kind, unassuming, and gentle man. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dad was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, having led the choir, and was a Men’s Forester. He had a deep, Catholic faith. Dad was a novice poet, having an excellent ability to craft words when writing. He was an amateur astronomer and meteorologist, rooted for the Yankees and Buffalo Bills, and had a passion for playing many different card games but especially Whist.
As was his fervent wish, Dad remained in his home until his death being cared for by his family, the Avera Hospice team, and was grateful for the spiritual guidance he received from Father Smith. Dad passed away peacefully on November 28, 2021 surrounded by family.
Preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, his parents, his brother James, and several in-laws. Survived by his children, Robert (Diane), Randall, Joseph, Jacqueline Reuter, Janet (Scott) Schaeffer, Mary (Rich) Sladek, Kristi Schulte, David (Teri), Brian, Rebecca (Matthew) Bunkers, Rachel (Chad) Switzer, and Charity, in addition to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren for whom Dad was very fond of. He is also survived by his siblings: Father Roger, Bernard, Raymond (Karen), Peter, Deloris (Bernard) Thares, Marie (Wayne) Enstice, Judy (Marvin) Seyer, Gerald (Mary), Patricia Schweitzer, Jerome (Patricia), Jeanne Bieber, and Susan Klang; in-laws: Viola Gillick, Teresa Morgan, and Jessie Lacher; and many nieces and nephews.
Because Dad taught us the importance of working hard and giving to others, the family is not requesting memorials. Rather, consider doing something kindhearted for your neighbor, such as offering a meal, a visit, or simply a smile. In the words of Dad, his message to each of us would be to “Play it Cool” and enjoy the simple things in life as there are many. Condolences and memories may be shared with his family, and flowers ordered at www.grammfuneralhome.com

Kevin Holt - December 20, 1954 - October 24, 2021

Departed: 10/24/2021 (Ipswich)
Obituary Preview: Mass of Christian Burial for Kevin Holt, 66, Mina, will be 10:30am Friday, October 29, 2021 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Ipswich, SD.  Father Timothy Smith will serve as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Cresbard Cemetery at 1:30pm. Visitation is from 5-7pm, Thursday, October 28, 2021 followed by a Liturgical Wake Service at 7:00pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Kevin Duane Holt died on Sunday, October 24, 2021, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.  Kevin was born December 20, 1954, to Duane and Shirley Holt in Limestone, Maine on Loring Airforce Base. Shortly after his birth, the family moved back to South Dakota. Initially they settled on a farm south of Cresbard where they remained for a few years before moving into town in 1960. Kevin graduated from Cresbard High School in 1973.
Immediately following high school, Kevin moved 9 miles northwest of Cresbard to the farm he would call home for most of his life. On November 7, 1975, he married Pamela Rausch. Kevin and Pam would make the family farm their home for 46 years, before moving to Mina Lake one year ago.
Kevin was passionate about agriculture and hunting. He would diligently study the grain markets and was quick to talk about the merits of no-till farming. Kevin was a pioneer in the elk industry that reached prosperity in the 90’s. He was especially proud of “Claude”, a bull who at the time was one of the largest elk in the world. Kevin was also a deadeye shooter and excelled at both trap shooting and hunting, often times waiting until everyone else had missed to finally pull the trigger and knock down pheasants with long shots. There are many pheasants, coyotes, and whitetail deer resting easy today knowing that they no longer have to worry about their boogeyman.
The impact Kevin had on those around him was immense. He was a member of the local township board, school board, church council, the South Dakota Elk Breeders Association and many other organizations throughout his life. The loss of Kevin will be felt most by his immediate family. While his children were growing up, he rarely missed a sporting event. Most summer evenings ended with him in the shop rebounding the basketball or playing HORSE with one of his kids. Kevin cherished his many trips to the Black Hills beginning when he was just a little boy, whether he was hunting deer or vacationing with his family.  Many nights at Grandma and Grandpa’s house would begin with Grandpa making popcorn and end with grandkids falling asleep snuggled in his arms. Everyone always looked forward to Kevin’s homemade ice cream, a skill he passed down to his grandsons last Christmas. While they loved being home on the farm, Kevin and Pam also enjoyed traveling the world, especially their trips to Australia, Belize and multiple trips to Hawaii.  Kevin’s final adventure to Africa filled the family home with trophy mounts ranging from a kudu to a springbok.  He will be greatly missed at his grandchildren’s events, family vacations, and holidays.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Pam Holt; mother, Shirley Holt; mother-in-law, Janice Rausch; brother, Kurt Holt (Lori); Children: Weston Holt (Jessica) of Renner, SD; Sheldon Holt (Brandi) of Cresbard, SD; Sheena Hill (Matt) of Warner, SD; Kyle Holt (Jessica) of Pierre, SD; and his beloved grandchildren: Gavin Holt, Carson Holt, Jaxon Holt, Sadey Holt, Brentley Holt, Brynn Hill, Braelynn Holt, Kason Hill, Brystol Holt, Hudson Holt, Samuel Hill, Nani Holt, and Eden Hill; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Duane Holt; father-in-law, Duane Rausch; sister-in-law, Carmen Rausch; brothers-in-law: Mike Schlosser and Gary Rausch; great-niece, Amaya Larson. Arrangements are with Gramm Funeral Home of Ipswich.  Condolences and memories may be shared with her family and flowers ordered at grammfuneralhome.com
