Flora Cuevas - December 23, 1931 - May 20, 2024

Departed: 05/20/2024 (East Meadow)
Obituary Preview: Flora Cuevas' Obituary:
Flora Esther Cuevas, the life of every party, has bid her final adieu at the young age of 92. Born on December 23, 1931, in the lively streets of Puerto Rico, she brought her zest for life to New York, where she boogied her way through every day until May 20, 2024.
Flora was more than just a mother; she was the captain of the Cuevas ship, steering her brood of nine with love and laughter. As a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, she had more little ones to spoil than she had fingers and toes, and she relished every moment of it. But Flora's nurturing nature didn't stop at her own kin; she was the honorary auntie to all, with a knack for turning frowns upside down and dishing out sage advice, usually in Spanish, like "Es mejor estar sola que con mala compañía."
Flora had a talent for turning any gathering into a fiesta. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where the aroma of her legendary "arroz con gandules" and "carne guisada" welcomed all who crossed the threshold. No stomach left hungry, no heart left untouched.
Flora wasn't just a chef; she was a maestra of merriment. Her laugh was infectious, her gossip game strong, and her dance moves smoother than salsa on a hot summer night. Whenever Latin music filled the air, you could bet your bottom dollar Flora was stepping onto the dance floor, her joy contagious and her spirit unchallenged.
And let's not forget her love for scratch-offs and slot machines. Flora was Lady Luck incarnate, and her mere presence at the casino would elicit shouts of "Abuela!" from strangers as they win big at the roulette tables.
Flora Esther Cuevas was a shining example of how to take life by the horns and ride it with a smile. Her optimism was infectious, her laughter a symphony, and her love boundless.
Though Flora may have danced her way to the next life, her legacy of love and laughter lives on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. In honor of Flora's remarkable life, please join us for a celebration of her legacy:

Samuel Dean Huston - September 30, 1961 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (East Meadow)
Obituary Preview: Samuel Dean Huston was born in East Meadow, New York, to loving parents James E. Huston and Annie B. Huston on September 30, 1961. He was raised in Roosevelt, NY, with one older brother, James Huston Jr., and a younger brother, Gary Huston, who arrived in 1965. Samuel attended Roosevelt JR SR High School in the 1970s. At the age of 13, Samuel contemplated his future, whether to go to trade school or college. Not ready to make that decision, he decided to enjoy
being a kid for a few more years. He developed a love and passion for martial arts, which he carried into his adult years, winning trophy after trophy in karate competitions. Samuel wanted to do things on his own terms, to be his own man so to speak. So, he stopped attending high school and completed the necessary requirements on his own, to receive his diploma ahead of time. Still uncertain about his path in life, he sought to find himself and joined the Air National Guard in 1981. Seeking more of a challenge, he requested active duty and soon joined the United States Air Force that same year. He excelled in his role and rose to the rank of Sergeant as a Telecommunications Ops Specialist. Although excelling, he realized that the military career path was not for him. Before being honourably discharged, and always eager to learn and help others, he began working part-time in a hospital as a physical therapy aide while still serving in the USAF. Following his military service, Sam made California his home for the next three decades, settling in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. Recognizing the importance of ongoing education, he embarked on a journey to expand his knowledge and skill set. Starting as a physical therapist assistant, Sam diligently worked his way to licensure in the field. Driven by a desire for personal growth and a passion for holistic health, Sam pursued studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture at Samru University. This endeavour was deeply rooted in his lifelong dedication to martial arts, which served as a guiding force in his pursuit of well-being and balance.
In his relentless pursuit of knowledge, Sam earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton School of Natural Health in 2010, followed by another Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from California Coast University in 2014. He further enriched his expertise with certificates in Life Coaching from the South West Institute for the Healing Arts in Tempe, Arizona, in 2014, and in Nutrition and Healthy Living from Cornell University in New York in 2020. His insatiable thirst for learning led him to earn numerous additional certificates across various disciplines, a testament to his unwavering commitment to personal and professional development. Listing each certificate here would not only be exhaustive but also insufficient to capture the breadth of his accomplishments.
Sam's life journey traversed diverse paths, spanning from his young years in New York to his adventures across the globe. Influenced by a mosaic of life experiences and enriched by his varied educational pursuits and military training, Sam's career unfolded as a multifaceted tapestry woven with threads of knowledge and dedication. His professional trajectory was marked by a rich tapestry of experiences, with significant contributions made in the field of physical therapy across diverse settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home health therapy. A man of eclectic interests and fervent passions, Sam seized each opportunity to expand his horizons, leaving an enduring impact on those around him. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Samuel made the choice to temporarily step back from his career. His commitment to personal well-being extended beyond professional endeavours, as evidenced by his years-long embrace of a vegan lifestyle, reflecting a holistic approach to health and vitality. With all that being said and done, one of his proudest moments and achievements may have come not just from tracing and learning about his Cameroonian ancestral roots, but from facilitating and orchestrating a monumental collaboration between ARK Jammers (the organization he was a member of which reconnects Afro-descendants through DNA technology) and the Mother of Humanity (MoH) Foundation (which he also became a member of). The MoH project involves constructing an enormous majestic monument in Cameroon, Africa, symbolizing the original African mother who gave birth to all nations on earth.
Samuel was deeply involved in and had a profound passion for his African heritage. At some point and time, he adopted his African name "BAKA" aka (BROTHER BAKA), which represents the spirit and the soul. He even found time to study and learn Egyptian hieroglyphics. Samuel made multiple trips to the Motherland, forming deep and meaningful relationships with many. He was not just regarded as a friend, but as a brother, like family. This was true not only in Africa but wherever he went, whether home in NY or LA, or when traveling abroad to Panama, Mexico, etc... He had a way of connecting with people and connecting people with others. That was the type of person he was. He was multifaceted, running in many circles of life and people. His legacy will live on through the many lives that he touched and impacted. While in the VA Hospital in West Los Angeles, the Lord summoned our brother on February 17, 2024 at 00:33 hours.
Samuel leaves to cherish, his dear mother Annie B. Huston, his two brothers James Huston Jr and Gary Huston, his sister-in law Vanessa Moore-Huston, his aunt Lucile Meadows, many cousins including Wanda Umstead, Robin Umstead, Roger Meadows; a host of nieces, and nephews; stepbrother Calvin Graham, step-niece Erika Graham-Brown, step-nephews Jammal Graham and Kevin Graham, and great-nephew J'Quan Brown. Samuel has certainly reunited with his late father James E. Huston, his late stepmother Earlene Huston, and his late stepsister Earlene Graham-Slaughter in the eternal light. Samuel is loved and will be deeply missed by many.
