Departed: 05/22/2024 (Iowa City)
Obituary Preview: Marcia Courtney Culver, 72, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday May 22, 2024.
Marcia’s many passions ranged from cats, cooking, and gardening to literature, classical music, and cinema, from camping in the Rockies to composing photographic collages. An avid traveler who loved Paris best of all places, for day-to-day life, she generally preferred small towns and rural settings. Intelligence and empathy, warmth and wit, good humor and a ready smile were hallmarks of her personality.
Born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Marcia fulfilled her dream of experiencing life in New York City by going to college at Barnard. She then earned a Ph.D. in English at Princeton, where she met her partner, Dennis Moore. After they moved to the Midwest, she enjoyed a long career as a writer, researcher, and editor, primarily at the University of Iowa.
Shortly after retiring, Marcia was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, a challenge she met with typical clear-sightedness and strength of will. She was profoundly grateful for a dozen years of compassionate care by Dr. David Bender, M.D., and his colleagues at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice, which provided comfort and care during Marcia's final six weeks. At her request, there will be no memorial service.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents: Betsy and Myron Culver and her brother, David. Survivors include Dennis Moore (Iowa City); Marcia’s sister, Jane Culver (Plainfield, VT); Jane's daughters: Becky Sporbert (London, UK), Liz Thompson (Bromsgrove, UK), and Kari White (St. Johnsbury, VT) and their families; as well as a close circle of beloved friends.

Terry Lee Potter - January 27, 1943 - May 11, 2024

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Iowa City)
Obituary Preview: Terry Potter, 81, lifelong resident of Johnson County passed away May 11, 2024 at Ridgeview Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids.
Terry was born on January 27, 1943 in Iowa City, Iowa to Virgil and Geraldine “Boots” (Stinocher) Potter. He was raised in Iowa City, Solon and Tiffin, where he graduated high school before enlisting in the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, he earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After being honorably discharged in 1968, he worked in construction for several years. During this time, Terry went on a blind date with Carol Briskey, who soon became the love of his life. The couple were married on May 11, 1973 and settled in North Liberty before moving to Coralville while raising their children Kelly and Chris.
After their marriage, Terry began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. He worked his way up from being a janitor to eventually a lineman, finishing his career on the plow train. Terry loved his job and was good at what he did but more important to him were the wonderful lifelong friendships he formed who were more like brothers to him. His children can’t recall a time they weren’t at the family functions and family vacations and were considered family to their family. He later retired in 2000.
Terry was an avid outdoorsman and spent his free time fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, and driving near and far to simply enjoy nature. He loved listening to old rock and roll, watching westerns with Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, and took on the hobby of making shotgun shells. Terry was always up for an adventure and would pile his family into the car to go to an outdoor function of some sort. He always attended Solon Beef Days along with other local functions. More than anything, there was nothing more important to him than his family, immediate and extended family. He was happiest when he was surrounded by family making memories, majority of those memories surrounded by his fun and goofy sense of humor.
No portrait of Dad would be complete without attempting to describe the magnitude of his self-sufficiency and willingness to help anyone and everyone. He lived to help others and that he did without hesitation paired with his constant need for jokes and sense of humor. A stranger to Terry was just a friend he hadn’t met yet and if that person needed anything, he never questioned if he could help.
After being diagnosed with Lung Cancer, the most challenging part of the cancer was not being able to be independent as he has lived his whole life. After his health was declining, the only reason he agreed to “try out” an assisted living facility was because his granddaughter talked him into where she worked, Ridgeview Assisted Living. Terry had only spent a few weeks there before his death.
Terry was full of life his whole life and will be missed for his laughter the love he gave freely.
He is survived by his wife Carol Potter of Cedar Rapids, son Chris Potter of Mechanicsville, IA, daughter Kelly (Brent) Thomas of Marion, IA, brothers David (Linda) Potter of Oxford, IA, and Keith (Barbara) Potter of Arlington, TX, grandchildren Aleah, Alexis, Brie, Kyle, Tina, Maddie, and Iain, and several nieces and nephews that he adored.
Terry was preceded in death by his infant brother Robert, parents and daughter in law Kim Potter.

Camilla was born March 30, 1930 to Bernetta (Green) and Art Schnoebelen in Iowa City, Iowa. She left us on April 24, 2024 in Jefferson, Iowa, at the age of 94.
Growing up, Camilla enjoyed spending time with her relatives in Riverside, Iowa, especially her Grandma Schnoebelen, Aunt Irmina and many cousins. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and attended Iowa City Business College earning her degree/certificate in accounting. She met (her words) “a tall handsome man in his Marine Uniform strutting around” while working at the famous Barbara’s Bake Shop in Iowa City. She later married him (George J. Dohrer, Jr.) and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary before his passing.
Camilla and George had four children: Tom, Mike, Pat (Mitchell), Peg and later Julia Dohrer (Tom’s wife) who was like a daughter to Camilla.
Camilla was an amazing seamstress and was quilting into her 90’s.
Camilla was an accountant specialist at the University of Iowa and enjoyed working with students at the Iowa Memorial Union and the professors and scientists at the Hydraulics lab. She was a proud member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
Camilla and George were Hawkeye season ticketholders for decades. They seldom missed a home football or basketball game and, with their dear friends, Vonnie and Floyd Gould, visited every Big Ten stadium to watch the Hawks. Camilla remained a Hawkeye fan to the end, relishing in the Women’s Basketball Team’s success, and Caitlin Clark’s achievements.
Camilla and George spent over 30 years as Arizona snowbirds. They especially enjoyed spending time with their niece, Suzanne Dohrer and her spouse, Stan Watts. They also enjoyed spending time with the Ockenfels and many Hawkeye snowbirds – eating out and watching games.
Camilla moved to The Gardens in Jefferson at age 90 and lived independently until a few months ago. She stayed abreast of politics, enjoyed any kind of puzzle, and seldom missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy.
Camilla was tragically preceded in death by George (2012), Tom (2009), Pat (2009), Julia (2013), Mike (2015) and Peg’s step-son, Michael (2011).
She is survived by her daughter, Peg; her son-in-law, Tom Schmit; her grandchildren: Luke Mitchell and his friend Sarah (Cedar Rapids), A.J. Dohrer (Colorado Springs), Dylan Naylor and his fiancée Emily Evans (St. Louis), and Jackson Naylor (Colorado Springs); and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Any memorials may be made to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Iowa City; Susan G. Komen Foundation; or University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Camilla will be laid to rest at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.
