Anita L Marsella - May 23, 1942 - October 24, 2023

Departed: 10/24/2023 (Hanson)
Obituary Preview: Anita L. Marsella, 81, of North Dighton, MA passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on October 24, 2023, at the Life Care Center in Attleboro, MA.
Born in Somerset on May 23, 1942, she was the daughter of the late George and Helen (Machado) Pontes.
Anita leaves behind her loving husband of over 47 years, Joseph F. Marsella, her daughter Gina Smith, and her husband Gregory Smith, and most importantly the light of her life, her granddaughter, Evelynn Louise Smith. Anita took great pride in her “Vitamin E” and loved being her Gigi. Their bond was truly unique, and they brought great joy to one another.
Anita will be dearly missed by many loving brothers, sisters and nieces and nephews.
Spending time with her family was Anita’s greatest delight. She considered herself fortunate to be able to stay at home to raise her daughter, and she was perfect at it. She welcomed her daughter’s friends to her home as if they were her own, and was generous with her time and love.
Once her nest was empty, Anita, always busy, started working at Shaw’s Supermarket in Taunton part time. Anita quickly became very popular with her upbeat and fun attitude, and her infectious personality. She stayed there long enough to officially “retire”, and she enjoyed the work and the people immensely. She was also an amazing shopper! One of her favorite things to do before Parkinson’s Disease slowed her down, was to shop for clothes for Evelynn. She made sure her granddaughter was one of the best dressed girls around!
Anita leaves behind so many beautiful memories for those that knew and loved her. While she will be missed immensely, her love will always be felt, as it was great and all encompassing- much like her beautiful smile.
Per her wishes, there will be no formal funeral services.  In lieu of this, the family would like to invite anyone that would like to attend to a memorial luncheon on January 7, 2024, at 12 noon to take place at The Chateau Restaurant located at 48 Bay Road in Norton MA.  We would love you to pop in when you can, share some food and fun memories of Anita. Gerald (Jerry) John McCarthy - July 03, 1934 - May 12, 2023

Departed: 05/12/2023 (Hanson)
Obituary Preview: Gerald John “Jerry” McCarthy passed suddenly on March 15, 2022 of heart failure. His beloved wife of 63 years, Myra Marie (Vadney) McCarthy had passed peacefully in hospice of Alzheimer’s disease and kidney failure on November 21, 2020.
Jerry was born the younger of two children to Elizabeth (Meehan) and James McCarthy in Somerville, MA, on July 3, 1934 and grew up with his brother James in the Savin Hill section of Dorchester, MA. After attending Boston Tech High School, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard with his best friend Jack McKinnon, serving on the USCGC Duane and the Chambers and later being stationed at Boston Light. His passion for boats and the sea led Jerry to a long career with the Dept. of the Navy, first as a shipwright in the Boston Naval Yard, and later with SupShip Boston in restoring the U.S.S. Constitution.
Jerry enjoyed being a big part of the “Old Ironsides” annual turnaround sail in Boston Harbor every Independence Day. Myra was born the youngest of 13 brothers and sisters to Mary (LaFort) and Roy Vadney in Boston, MA on January 10, 1936. Myra grew up in the Fields Corner section of Boston, attending Dorchester High for Girls and later working for one of the insurance giants downtown.
Jerry and Myra met while in high school and started dating, Jerry walking the railroad tracks across town to Myra’s home. After Jerry’s service with the Coast Guard, they married in 1957, starting their family in Dorchester and eventually settling in Braintree, MA. When their children were young, they were both very active in Scouting, with Myra serving as a den mother for Cub Scouts, and Jerry helping out with the Boy Scouts at their different events, sharing his knowledge of knots, wood working, and even building the track for the annual Pinewood Derby miniature car races.
Devout Catholics, Jerry and Myra were long time members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Braintree. Myra also taught CCD for many years at the parish and volunteered as a Teacher’s Aide at the local elementary school. When the children had all grown and flown the nest, and Jerry had retired from his longtime service to the Dept. Of the Navy, they retired to a cozy home in West Yarmouth, MA. Jerry got himself a canoe and enjoyed fishing in the nearby lakes and hitting the stripers from the shores of the Cape Cod Canal. Myra loved taking walks in the pristine surroundings with their German Shepherd Maxine and enjoying the Cape Cod lifestyle.
In their later years, arthritis and the rough New England winters finally convinced Jerry and Myra to head south, where they settled for good in Ocala, Florida. They were lucky to have some wonderful neighbors and enjoyed the conveniences of their new senior community.
Jerry and Myra are survived by their three children – son James and Dixie (Gaynor) of Gerrardstown, WV, son Kevin and Yvonne (Mellott) of Laguna Niguel, CA, and daughter Karen of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Matthew of Quincy, MA and Gianna of Chicago, IL; Jerry’s brother James and his wife Regina of Hanson, MA; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Jerry and Myra McCarthy will be laid to rest, side by side, in the Bourne National Cemetery, complete with a military color guard and salute. The service will be held at 11:00am on May 18, which would have been their 66th wedding anniversary.

Departed: 04/09/2023 (Hanson)
Obituary Preview: Janinia Ferguson was born a century and a year ago in Cambridge Massachusetts to Polish immigrants, Albert and Mary Chrusciel.  Taught to love and respect all living things, she went on to demonstrate her honest and empathic nature in all her endeavors.  She loved to create and passed her skills in knitting, crocheting, quilting, and sewing onto her daughters and grandchildren.

Ferguson fought and became a prisoner of war in Germany.  After his return and their marriage in 1945, Janinia was a loyal employee of Ocean Spray Cranberry Company.  She began by sorting cranberries in the warehouse, but upon discovering that she could type, the company asked her to fill in an empty spot in the secretarial pool.  Thus began her 30-year career as a secretary.  Completing night courses to improve her skills led to her advancement to Executive Secretary.
Janinia and her husband enjoyed many happy years of retirement together, taking road trips throughout New England, dancing and going to flea markets.  They also enjoyed their expanding family’s penchant for celebrating any and all occasions with a party - another practice learned from her.  And her annual Girls’ Columbus Day Weekend in New Hampshire with her daughter and granddaughters was an event that was loved for many years and will continue to evolve as a family tradition.
Janinia is predeceased by her husband, Edward and her daughter, Sandy.  She leaves behind her daughter and son-in law, Patti and Michael, with whom she lived in Plymouth.   She also leaves five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and her long-time best friend, Inkie, who will all miss her love immensely.
