Shirley was born on February 16, 1937, in McFarlan, NC to Molly Jordan Long and Morman Long and was raised along with her two sisters and three brothers in the rural farming communities of southern Anson County. An honor graduate of Morven High School, Shirley excelled at women’s basketball and playing the piano. Following her marriage to Davis J. Meachum of Wadesboro Shirley traveled extensively over a twenty-plus year time-period in support of her husband’s career in the U.S. Army to many military bases on the east coast, including overseas postings to France, Germany twice, England, Turkey, and Iran.
As a wife and mother of her daughter, Ramona, and two sons, David and Stephen, Shirley masterfully juggled her time to take on a working career in the administrative offices of several army posts and the phone company in Columbus, GA. One of Shirley’s fondest work memories with “Ma Bell” was handling a series of long-distance calls for the “Duke”, the actor John Wayne, during filming of the movie, “The Green Beret” at Fort Benning, GA. She often spoke of Mr. Wayne’s gentlemanly phone etiquette. For her part, Shirley received multiple commendations for her work.
Having settled in Anson County after her husband’s retirement from the military, Shirley continued her working career as an administrative assistant for an insurance company before moving on to become the long-time assistant to Wadesboro’s premiere dentist, Dr. Robert Bridger, eventually retiring from public work life to provide full time home care for her mother.
In addition to her roles as a wife, mother, administrative assistant and ultimately caregiver, Shirley loved Jesus, her Lord and Savior, and served Him faithfully. She was deeply involved in her local church, taught Sunday School classes, led youth groups and played the piano and organ for church services. She also showed great love and compassion to others in the community by caring for the elderly, supporting widows, providing holiday outings for foster children, and leading in the Cub Scout program. Shirley was an exceptional cook and pastry chef, creating her own cookbook of amazing recipes and collecting over 200 other volumes. A fervent volunteer Hospice of Anson County, Shirley served as editor of the Hospice Cookbook fundraising project. Shirley was seldom idle and often used her “down” time to create needlework caps, scarves, and other gifts for Hospice patients. In her later years, Shirley immersed herself in studying and researching the Meachum and Long family history and heritage, culminating in tracing the roots of both family trees back to mother England.
Shirley possessed a bright and energetic personality and was known for her ability to making lasting friendships. She was also known for being fiercely protective of her family, friends, and all that she loved. Shirley touched many lives with her generosity and passion for life.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff member. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services and charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. Consider sharing it with your loved ones or storing it with your important documents.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to proofread carefully before submission to avoid errors.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. You can also look up examples online or consult with a funeral home or bereavement counselor for guidance.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of online availability varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 1-5 years).

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

This depends on the original publication or platform. You may need permission from the copyright holder or pay for republication fees. Check their policies before proceeding.

You can create a memorial website using online platforms like Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or ForeverMissed.com. These sites often offer more flexibility and space for sharing stories, photos, and memories than traditional newspaper obituaries.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?
