Jerry Snow - April 02, 1949 - May 16, 2024

Departed: 05/16/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Jerry Aaron Snow was born in Nicholas, SC on April 2, 1949 to Lorena McCray Snow & James Snow. God called him home to glory on May 16, 2024 in Fairfax, VA. He was loved and respected by many who knew him.
Jerry moved shortly after birth with his parents to Baltimore City where attended public school and graduated from Grant T. Woods Vocational Technical High School. Shortly after graduating, he worked at the Maryland Cup Company.
His patriotism led him to volunteer to protect and serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He had a Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) as a motor vehicle operator and he received the following citations - National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal with one star, Vietnam Campaign medal with device, and was designated as a Rifle Marksmen. He cherished being a Leather neck, devil dog and carried that Marine Corps sense of pride with him to the very end.
Jerry had a strong love for family and sports. His favorite sport was baseball, followed by football, basketball and ice hockey. He would play sports down at the local community center prior to going into the Marine Corps. Taking after his parents he developed a strong love for music.
Jerry was for the culture and was often quoted saying “Black Boy, Black Girl” - referring to his reverence and respect to Black people around the world. Other notable quotes include “Fight you to death,” “Step on mine,” “trip wires” - all referencing his time in Vietnam, due to his struggles with PTSD. He was known for squawking at his internal Navy family members namely his niece and nephew, affectionately calling them ‘Squabbies’. God had his hand over Jerry’s life, as he was a resilient man. Grandma got ran over by a reindeer, but Jerry almost got ran over by a bus - and still survived to tell the story. He was stabbed in the stomach within a quarter inch of a major organ, but still survived. People often counted him out but no one would’ve believed that he would have lived as long as he did. He was a blessed man to make it out of his 40s and into his mid 70s. He had a praying Mother and Grandmother who instilled the love of Christ in him!
Jerry was proceeded by his father James Snow, his mother Lorena McCray Snow, his brother Gregory Snow and his sister Gloria-Ann Snow. He is survived by his sisters Veronica Snow-Hill and Alice Snow, niece Jasmine Rush (Glenn Rush) and nephews Chauncey Hill (Sillas Martin) and Viaronic Snow-Hill as well as great niece and great nephew Aniyah Rush and Micah Rush.

Mary Ellen Craig - December 07, 1945 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Craig, age 78, passed away at her home on May 1, 2024. Born on December 7, 1945, in Cambridge, MA, she was daughter to the late Edward L. Craig, Jr. and the late Flore L. (Piston) Craig of Concord, MA. The oldest of five children, Mary Ellen graduated from the now closed Marian High School in Framingham, MA ('63). Her fellow Marian classmate, former Congressman James P. "Jim" Moran, fondly remembers that exactly 60 years prior to the day of her passing, Mary Ellen was crowned Queen of the May, a title bestowed in honor of the Blessed Mother. "Standing up there in front of the entire crowd, she had never looked happier or more beautiful", Jim recollected.
After Mary Ellen went on to graduate from Regis College (BA, '67), she and Jim married at St. Bernard's Church in Concord, MA. Following the births of their two children, James Edward "Jimmy" Moran and Mary Elise Moran, the family settled and became active in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA. It was there that Mary Ellen helped found the nearby Valley Drive Preschool. A few years later, she enrolled in the Catholic University School of Law, where she went on to earn her JD ('77).
She began her law career as a prosecutor with the Commonwealth's Attorney office in Alexandria, under then Commonwealth Attorney John Kloch. She moved into private practice in the early 1980's with her second husband, the late Robert A.W. Boraks. In addition to being an accomplished attorney, Mary Ellen had also become a child advocate; she combined these two passions when she accepted a position with the Arlington County Attorney’s office in 1991, where she represented the County in all cases related to the abuse and neglect of children and the elderly. Her service was almost always both challenging and heartbreaking, but she earned numerous accolades and awards for her courageous work and managed to hold this position for more than 15 years until her well-deserved retirement in 2009.
After retiring, it surprised no one when she continued to give back by becoming a volunteer Chaplain at Inova Alexandria Hospital, where she took great pleasure in being able to bring comfort and support to others in need.
Each year, she gathered her family at lavish Thanksgiving dinners, where she encouraged them to express gratitude for blessings great and small, no matter how challenging the times. Mary Ellen was an avid reader, an amazing cook, and a dedicated viewer of Law & Order. She loved ballet, having been a talented dancer in her youth, and took adult dance classes at BalletNova. A deeply spiritual individual, she expanded her religious studies to the teachings and meditations of Buddha. She was an ardent Democrat and frequent (very peaceful) protestor.
Her greatest passion in life though, was in her role as Grandmother to her four beloved grandchildren: Grayson Lee Moran, Keira Elise Moran, Leia Marie Moran, and Aidan Pierce Basloe. There was nothing in the world more important to her than these four, and her unconditional love and support for them knew no bounds. She never missed an opportunity to loudly cheer for them at every play, concert, sporting event, awards ceremony, and graduation. She kept every card they ever sent her, every event program, every drawing and gift they'd given her over the years. She treasured her time spent with them, whether it was trips to London or Paris, celebrating a birthday or holiday, or simply getting together to chat over tea or a brownie sundae. Her home was filled with their photos and mementos of their shared memories.
Memories of Mary Ellen’s kindness, generosity, and love as a mother-in-law will be cherished by Jimmy's wife, Angie Coffman Moran, and Mary Elise's husband, Benjamin Basloe. In addition to Jimmy & Angie (of Alexandria, VA), Mary Elise & Ben (of Arlington, VA), Grayson, Keira, Leia, and Aidan, she is also survived by her four younger siblings: Edward Craig, Catherine (John) Hopkins, Patricia (Dick) Wolf, and Michele (Kevin) Craig, and several much-loved nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen had suffered through a very difficult last four years, but finally succumbed, perhaps mercifully, after a short battle with ALS. Her bedside was constantly surrounded by her kids and grandkids during her final weeks, and she passed bravely and peacefully while holding her daughter's hand. Her children would like to thank her youngest sister and accomplished nurse, Michele, who flew to her side to help manage her at-home hospice care. Michele's reassuring presence, medical expertise, and warm heart was a great gift to us, most especially to Mom. We'd also like to thank two of her longtime best friends, Martha Casey and Miki Yaras-Davis, who provided counsel to us and who managed to maintain their connections with Mom until the end.
Mary Ellen was a generous donor to many charities and we encourage donations in her memory to two of her very favorites: Save the Children (www.savethechildren.org) or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org). Alternatively, she would also encourage support of Alcoholics Anonymous, a non-profit organization she proudly credited for its role in her 30+ years of fierce sobriety.
No formal service is scheduled per her wishes.

Frederick Gramlich - January 02, 1948 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Frederick Wales Gramlich was born on January 2, 1948, and passed away on April 10, 2024 with family by his side. He was born in Rochester, NY, to Harriet and Jacob Gramlich (“I.E.” and “Red”). Fred was the youngest of four children. His childhood was full of activity – piano, boy scouts, and playing every sport he could. In high school, Fred met his future wife of 53 years. He fell for Martha Jane Pleune when she told him she knew of a cow in Greece named in honor of his mother. He knew a good pick-up line when he heard one.
Fred graduated from Williams College in 1969. He spent a year at Oxford, which one might assume was for academic pursuits, but he fondly recalled playing "every sport they had". In 1970, Fred married Martha and they moved to Boston to continue their studies. Fred earned his PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 1974. Fred and Martha moved to Washington, D.C. in 1975 and he began his career as an economist for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he worked for over 30 years until 2008.
Fred and Martha had four children: Cornelia “Nel” Wales, Jacob “Jake” Pleune, Katharine “Kit” Williams, and Elizabeth “Beth” Harriet. Fred opted to work part time in order to spend more time caring for his children. His parenting was defined by an ability to appreciate and respect his children’s differences and unique personalities. He spent years supporting, rearing, and encouraging his children. He coached soccer for youth teams before his own children were even old enough to play because he "wanted to get it right". He was just as dedicated to his grandchildren, spending consistent and regular time with them - no matter the distance traveled - for as long as he was able. He never stopped taking an interest in them and he remained unceasingly playful, patient, nurturing, and warm.
Fred was a lover of soccer, golf, tennis, swimming, baseball, bicycling, and playing bridge. He relished time spent in nature, be it birdwatching, hiking, or gardening. He shared his love of music by singing songs to his children at bedtime and playing piano accompaniment at music recitals. He had an adventurous spirit and traveled widely across the world, but he also cherished returning each summer to Wisconsin and Canada to spend time with his large extended family. Most of all, he valued personal connection with family and friends. He was an attentive and empathetic listener.
Fred bore serious health struggles over the years stoically and without complaint. He ultimately succumbed to pneumonia, a complication of his Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his wife Martha, his children Nel (Mark) Latronica, Jake (Hillary) Gramlich, Kit (Scott) Meddles, Beth (Barrett) Turner, 16 grandchildren, and his siblings Robin Gordon and Jacob “Jack” Gramlich. He is predeceased by his parents, I.E. and Red Gramlich, and his brother Edward “Ned” Gramlich. We will miss him tremendously, but are happy that he “got it right” for all of us.

Though he didn’t have pets of his own, he supported both the ASPCA and the Humane Society at every opportunity. As a retiree he embarked on the great pastime of authorship - penning some 26 novels, as well as numerous short stories and novellas. Though in his last years he was physically challenged, his mind remained bright and active until the very end. The world is indeed a little less brilliant and a little more lost without him. Peter is survived by his sister Fredi Grossman, his nephew Michael Grossman and his niece Stacy Wasson and her family.
